My mom has been in a nursing home for about 2.5 years now.
Very nice place here in Aurora, Ohio. So new that at the time, my mom was only the 5th person admitted to the facility.
Her SS and Retirement accounts pay for her stay there. What I need to pay for is hair cuts, Manicures and Pedicures. Works out to about $150.00 per month. In the grand scheme of things, it's peanuts.
Yesterday, I went over to her facility to pay the 150.00 as usual. I asked the business manager over there what would happen if congress cuts Medicaid funding.
She said you should hope that never happens. I asked what happens to mom if they do. She repeated, you should hope that never happens. Wouldn't elaborate on it at all.
Does anyone know what would happen?
I do know that the cost of private pay for that facility is 96k per year. Since yesterday, I've come to find out that that amount is fairly typical.
So, does anyone know what happens to folks in nursing homes if Congress cuts funding to medicaid?

I could be wrong, but your mom must have had a great retirement fund because we were paying over $6,000 a month for my mom's nursing home.

Yeah you are wrong Mom's retirement from Higbees, along with my fathers retirement from GM plus the combination of what she received from SS for her and my dad don't amount to a hill of beans really.. Under 2K a month. The cost of the facility is 96k a year or $8k a month. Medicaid picks up some portion of that. The rest is, I assume, written off by the facility or there is a deal made with Medicare where the facility takes what Medicaid agrees to pay. What I'm asking is this, what happens if Medicaid gets cut as the republicans want to do?

HaHa. I get what you're doing. However, I've had to deal w/this situation and it's not pretty. Here is some information on the current system and nursing homes. How can I pay for nursing home care? Nursing home care can be expensive. There are many ways to pay for your nursing home care. Most people who enter nursing homes begin by paying for their care out-of-pocket. As you use your resources (like bank accounts and stocks) over a period of time, you may eventually become eligible for Medicaid. Medicare generally doesn't cover long-term care stays in a nursing home. Even if Medicare doesn’t cover your nursing home care, you’ll still need Medicare for hospital care, doctor services, and medical supplies while you’re in the nursing home. Find out what nursing home care Medicare does cover, and how Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) works if you live in a nursing home or other institution. There are several other ways you can pay for nursing home care: Medicaid Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that helps with medical costs for some people with limited income and resources. Most health care costs are covered if you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. Most, but not all, nursing homes accept Medicaid payment. Even if you pay out-of-pocket or with long-term care insurance, you may eventually "spend down" your assets while you’re at the nursing home, so it’s good to know if the nursing home you chose will accept Medicaid. Medicaid programs vary from state to state. Most often, eligibility is based on your income and personal resources. Many states have higher Medicaid income limits for nursing home residents. You may be eligible for Medicaid coverage in a nursing home even if you haven’t qualified for other Medicaid services in the past. To get more information on Medicaid eligibility in your state, call your state Medicaid office. Long-term care insurance This type of insurance policy can help pay for many types of long-term care, including both skilled and non-skilled care. Long-term care insurance can vary widely. Some policies may cover only nursing home care, while others may include coverage for a range of services, like adult day care, assisted living, medical equipment, and informal home care. If you have long-term care insurance, check your policy or call the insurance company to find out if the care you need is covered. If you're shopping for long-term care insurance, find out which types of long-term care services and facilities the different policies cover. Also, check to see if your coverage could be limited because of a pre-existing condition. Make sure you buy from a reliable company that's licensed in your state. Federal employees, members of the uniformed services, retirees, their spouses, and other qualified relatives may be able to buy long-term care insurance at discounted group rates. Get more information about long-term care insurance for federal employees. Personal resources You can use your personal money and savings to pay for nursing home care. Some insurance companies let you use your life insurance policy to pay for long-term care. Contact your insurance provider for more information on what your private insurance covers. https://www.medicare.gov/what-medicare-covers/part-a/paying-for-nursing-home-care.html

What I'm asking is this, what happens if Medicaid gets cut Medicaid coverage helps hold down health care costs for everyone else. Medicaid absorbs the costs for expensive coverage—including care of the disabled and those with dementia—that would otherwise be shifted to the private insurance market and Medicare. That's kept private insurance prices about 7% lower, according to a recent study by researchers at the Department of Health and Human Services. The program is also highly cost-effective at delivering those services: Between 2007 and 2013, Medicaid spending per enrollee rose just 3.1% vs. 4.6% for private insurance. Medicaid changes may be followed by cuts to Medicare and Social Security. There's no way to know if Trump’s Medicaid plans will gain traction in Congress. But if funding limits are enacted, it may smooth the way for overhauls of Medicare and Social Security, which both face serious financial shortfalls. Granted, Trump has previously said he would leave Social Security and Medicare untouched. But some of his cabinet nominees, as well as many GOP lawmakers, would like these programs to be privatized (essentially shifting costs to seniors) or cut back. If that happens, the nation’s retirement safety net is likely to unravel. Best wishes bro.

it's pretty scary..
On top of that, Mom has dementia. Most days, we don't see much of a difference, but today for some reason, she's on the war path. She's called me 7 or 8 times, my wife over 15 times, my Brother and my sister in law a bunch of times and my sister a bunch of times. Each time saying, come and get me out of here., I hate it here.
I even put in a nanny cam to make sure she wasn't being injured or treated poorly. Nothing wrong going on.
It's just getting crazy.. I think today I've hit a limit of my tolerance.. I'll be fine tomorrow. I hope.

I work daily in these places. I have for the past 20 years. I could say so much but I don't have time to write a book. Let me just say it's a shame how our elderly are treated in this country. These facilities are money (inheritance) extraction centers. Not care facilities. I've met a couple of the owners of a couple of the bigger national companies that own buildings. Used car salesmen give off better, less skeezy, energy.

A) It is none of your business (nor anybody's on this public forum) B) Who cares if she does have a great retirement fund? Ultimately, it goes back to letter "A"...it's none of our business. Damanshot was asking a question about what happens if Medicaid funding disappears...this is what should be commented on. Not, speculating how much $ his mom's retirement fund is nor comparing to what you were paying for your mom's nursing home. And before you attack me or become defensive I am simply pointing this out because there is a certain level of respect for one's privacy that seems to go by the wayside on an anonymous forum.

I can't argue that point because I suspect you know way more than me, I'll accept what you say. But this is about how to pay for mom's stay if the Republicans do indeed cut Medicaid funding to nursing homes? That's what I'm concerned about. I'm not sure there is a thing I can do about it, but I am trying to stay ahead of the curve on it. I guess the Repeal and Replace thing is dead now and McConnell is going for a total repeal with a 2 year window to replace. So if he accomplishes that, we have another 2 years or so with this hanging over out heads. That's just miserable.

Daman, My dad is in his second nursing home. His total time in a facility is now about 3.5 years after my stepmom fought my sisters for about a year to even put him in a home. He is in his second home because in his first, they only had one aid to a wing (he required 2 because he was unsteady) and he fell into the tub and broke his hip. He has already expired his 150k in savings that he had and me and my stepmom went to Medicaid and got him enrolled. He also has dementia, but where he is at now, he is already passed the aggressive part, all the rest of the fun stuff. he mostly says nothing. once in a while he smiles if I put his 50's music on my phone. I also don't have a clue what to do if this happens to him, there is no way we can take care of him. All I know is I told my wife a couple weeks ago (she is younger than me) is if I get what my dad does, dump me in the back yard and enjoy our retirement or lets get a condo at the beach and die the way we want to. I am not paying somebody 8k a month to wipe my butt and feed me mechanized crap food.

There is no article link in the post I responded to. If you added one in a later comment then....no, I didn't see it. I responded to a totally different comment, which I quoted.
Point it....Would you ask somebody how much they earn or paid for their house? No, it's a matter of respect. There is no difference here.
And no, I am not "attacking" (again, you are on the defense Vers). I simply pointed out that it is a crass comment to make and none of your/our business. I am pretty sure if you felt the same way about something somebody posted you too would call them out. In fact, on the majority of your posts you do just that.
Moving on and moving forward, yet again.

Look, this is a very personal subject for me and I find it upsetting. I was actually trying to be polite, but here is something from the article that people should understand: Nursing home care can be expensive.
Now, I am not going to come back to this thread, because again, it's very personal seeing as how my mother passed away in one.

First, I'm sorry for your loss. I think I'm heading in that direction sooner rather than later. Secondly, I think if you check, most folks are smart enough today to protect their assets so that if they go into a nursing home, their accumulated wealth will be protected to a degree. At that point, your SS and retirement money are taken away from you and given to the nursing home (less $50 per month) That's when Medicaid takes over and picks up the assignment. That's mostly what happens today. If the elderly person wasn't aware they could protect their assets to a degree, then yes, they will be used up before Medicaid jumps in. They also allow for a spend down. But I'm not sure how that works exactly. What I'm worried about is what happens if Medicaid gets chopped.

My dad wasn't protected. When me and my wife went to see a friend of her family-a probate lawyer-he stated that it is much harder to protect than it used to be. Me and my wife still have not finished our paperwork.
Does anyone on here have any info on where it is better to see a probate atty or a financial adviser to protect our assets.
I also don't believe my inlaws have either.
When my mom passed, she didn't even have a will. I guess she didn't think she was going to be killed in an accident coming back from her grandsons preschool

I am not paying somebody 8k a month to wipe my butt and feed me mechanized crap food. Sad stories on here. Definitely. And yet, all of these stories happened under Obama care, right? Here's the end: Obama care never dealt with the rising COSTS of health care. And, along with that, the new "proposed" plan by the republicans hasn't dealt with it either. What we have seen for a long time is rising premiums, big increases in deductibles, etc. Protect your assets? Put your assets in a trust. I believe the time frame for assets to be "protected" is now 7 years, meaning even if you started a trust fund today, it's open to medical and nursing home care for the next 7 years. If anyone can offer more insight to that, please do. Couple of small examples of why, perhaps, nursing homes and rehab facilities cost so much: My grandma. Medicare. Going blind. Doctor suggested a treatment - $10,000 per shot, and she should see improvement after 1 shot. After 3, still no improvement, so she wanted to quit getting them. They were painful. Doctor told her "no, we can't quit now. Medicare will pay for 3 more." Somebody padding their bank there? Wife's grandpa. Broken hip. They wouldn't "let" him out of rehab until medicare coverage for rehab expired. Why? $$$$$. (it was a nursing home/rehab center - and damn, the home fought like crazy to keep him in right up until the coverage expired. Weird, huh?) Follow the money - as I always say - you'll find the answer. Health care is a money game, and no one has addressed it, and I doubt it ever will be addressed. Health care is becoming, slowly but surely, and end game. Get insurance through work? Good for you - but, you're on the hook for the first $5000 to $8000, and after that, it's generally 80/20 up until a certain amount. Don't get health insurance through work? You're looking at $600 a month or so in premiums, PLUS an $8000 or so deductible before your insurance will kick in. 26 year old nephew - employed, makes good money, and absolutely NO health issues. $1000 a month, with a $7000 deductible. Not even a rant, but I'm done now. Every dominant society has had a downfall, and we're looking ours in the eye I think. JMO

You had to go there.....And yet Daman's family story sounds to be turning out ok unless a total repeal of Obamacare takes place and Medicaid is cut. Then his family finances will disappear or they will need bring mother home and take care of her on their own.

I can speak from my real experience here. The last nursing home/post op rehab facility I worked in, about 12 years ago, purposefully withheld the start of post op therapy for as long as they legally could. (There is a short window after admission where doing so is legal. I think it's three days.) In doing so they knew it would extend the length of recovery/therapy. (For every day in bed, for the geriatric set, after a surgical procedure such as this it takes about 3 days to recoup what you've lost strength wise.) Making the average length of stay close to a week longer. Do this times a couple hundred patients a year and the money is significant. The only reason for idoing it though is profit. Period. It disgusted me once I learned from a disgruntled physical therapist what was going on. I left the company a short time later. To my knowledge they still practice this.

j/c:
I lied. I said I wouldn't come back to this thread, but I've been depressed all day due to the bad memories of my mom and nursing homes.
I need to get this off my chest because it's been tearing me up all day.
Mom had Stage 7 Alzheimer's. We kept her out of a home for the longest time because she said she never wanted to leave her home. She loved her house.
However, she became a danger onto herself. My brother, his wife, my wife, and myself were all working during the day. We couldn't watch her 24/7. She did some things like lock herself out of he house while dressed in only her nightgown when it was close to 0 degrees, leaving the gas stove on, approaching strangers on the street and asking for rides, etc.
It was so hard to put her in a home, but we had to. She got thrown out of the first one because her Alzheimer's was so bad that they couldn't do much for her. It was a nice place, but they weren't capable of caring for her. The second place was supposed to be great for Alzheimer's, but it was cold [emotionally] and depressing.
Mom fell and broke her hip one night. We decided to let her have the surgery even though there was a chance that she wouldn't make it through due to her heart problems and high blood pressure. The surgery was said to be successful. However, a day and a half later, she was dead.
Y'all...........this is a very personal thing. I don't know if we should talk about the agendas of our political views w/such a sensitive subject.
Sorry for all of this...........but, I had to say it.

I don't know when this was - your mom's story - but many places now have Alzheimer wings.

I spent the entire calendar year 2010 in a nursing home.
It was a low middle income type of facility.
It sucked.
It was infested with spiders and mice. The showers were dank and often had feces on the floor. The nurses assistants were minimum wage thieves who hated the residents.
Every day they had to change maybe 50 poopy adult diapers.
About 100 residents lived there of which ~ 80% were there for their final days. About 40% of them were non-functioning.
They had a locked-hallway for Alzheimer sufferers and patients with behavioral problems. If you didn't "toe-the-line" that's the hallway you ended up in. And you do not want to sleep in an open bedroom in a hallway full of people with behavioral problems. They are not responsible for their actions.
The mind-numbing boredom was probably the worst for me. At least there was a World Cup and Winter Olympics that year. I watched almost very minute.
I also watched the "LeBron's Big Decision/Big Announcement" Show while there. What a jerk.
Two to a room. Two of my roommates died during the year. (in their bed ~ 6 feet from mine)
I had already run out of all assets and had a net worth of zero (except for the $20 my sister would send me ~ every month). That's because before the nursing home I spent 3 1/2 months in a hospital and being a genius, I of course didn't have health insurance. And the hospital fee was way over $1,000/night. (but it did include breakfast, lunch and dinner - but not the extensive tests I had all the time MRIs Scans, Xrays, etc...)
The nursing home billed Medicaid $355/day for me. Or ~ $130,000 for the year I was there.
I transferred in on December 24, 2009 and released on January 5, 2011.
If I had a choice, today I'd take prison. In a heartbeat.

I guess she didn't think she was going to be killed in an accident coming back from her grandsons preschool Put all your assets in Trusts. Have your attorney do this. It avoids probate.

Damn man!
Stories like yours make me feel guilty for even feeling sorry for my family and myself.
I won't pry at all, but will just say that I am so sorry that you had to endure such a traumatic ordeal.
Best wishes for a better future.

Ya know I hated having my dad in a nursing home. I had room where he could live. Bed tv, recliner, bathroom. And a seat for me.
We watched some Browns games and Indians. I did have to plan his Dr appointments for potty breaks.Well anyways my youngest son and I was supposed to go on a weekend outing, but hospice said this in of life.
I know in the last hours of his life I told him dad you have to hold on to tomorrow there is party now and your invited.he my mom's birthday is October 15th my dad passed on October 16th. My

Yeah amazing at the amount of abuse that's allowed in a for profit system where you have an inelastic demand. If only someone offered a solution.

Mom moves in with you unless you come up with more than $150 a month to have her nails clipped and painted. I agree with Vers.....a good nursing home costs $5000-$6000 a month. We are at that point with my MIL. Some need to get a grip on reality is my opinion.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Have your attorney do this. It avoids probate. Our atty told us that trusts are not fool proof. And if we put assets also in our kids name, if our kiss have financial trouble or in a divorce, the other lawyer could come after our assets. Also, if one of our kids would have money/other issues someday, they have full access to everything. I know of a couple different couples where adult kids are robbing mom and dad blind.

I don't want to elaborate too much because it is too painful, but you're right. You have several alternatives, but not any of them are good once your parent/loved one needs to go to a an assisted care facility.
The government is no help unless you are dead broke and have no assets and like Portland said, the facilities themselves are the leeches of the universe.
My mom didn't spend a ton of time in those places, but again, it was over $6,000 a month out of our families assets.
And bro........don't dare be late w/a payment. We were moving some money around and needed two more days. The facility wanted threatened to throw her out right there and then.
It's freaking ugly!

Sad stories on here. Definitely.
And yet, all of these stories happened under Obama care, right? What? You wanna blame Obamacare for the potential cuts to Medicaid? If not for expanded Medicaid under Obamacare, my mom and millions of others might not be covered. How in the hell you can equate any of this to Obamacare is beyond me... That's just silly
