I'm surprised to see Kindred being talked up as a FS. I hope he can do it...but it alludes to more left-right than SS/FS.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Yes, safety by committee: Jackson:
“I think (DB) Derrick Kindred will definitely be out there. It could be a toss-up between (DB Jabrill) Peppers… It could be a lot of different people, let me put it to you like that. I say that for this reason: I think when you look at those guys and Gregg (Williams) has so many different packages that he plays in, it is not about a starter. It is not about who walks out there first. It kind of depends on who I put out there on offense first because they are going to match what we do. I think it is unfair to say, ‘Well, this guy is going to be a starter’ and then all of a sudden we are in a different package and you guys start writing and saying, ‘Well, that guy wasn’t out there first.’ I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.”
Brown:
“Hue (Jackson) and his staff really have done a nice job making sure that we understand our players well and deploy them to their strengths. All five or six of the guys we have in that safety room bring different strengths to the table, and we are going to put them in situations where they can be successful and impact the game most effectively. As Hue said, you may see (DB Ed) Reynolds II out there or you may see Derrick Kindred, but that may be more situational than it should be an indictment on anyone who’s not out there with a certain lineup.” We shall name it, The Safety Committee.

Cover 2 can be effective, but it is prone to giving up big plays. That might help explain why the Rams gave up 30+ points in six games last year and 40+ in 3 games. Heck, they gave up 28 to SF when Gabbert was their qb.
People don't want to believe that it's about talent. They think a coaching change will make a huge difference. Of course, reality has a tendency to set in. LOL

At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Heck, they gave up 28 to SF when Gabbert was their qb. I watched the Rams documentary on Amazon. Their defense was injured for a lot of the season (Quinn, Johnson, Hayes, and Brockers) all missed games or were banged up in games that they played in. I also think they basically quit on Fisher during the season.

I'm really hoping for Kai Nacua to step up and take the FS spot. I don't like Kindred at that spot at all.

general reply to some of the stuff in the thread. Kindred didn't play much at all until like week 9 or 10 I believe. I think he is being credited with the play of others especially early on in the year when it was mass confusion. Kid played pretty good down the stretch.
Vers very good point on the cover 2. It can give up a lot of points in a hurry, if you aren't getting consistent pressure, you get murdered.
Its not the big arm that worries me however. Its the Alex Smith, Tom Brady, Drew Brees. Its a slow painful death. 4-6 yards over and over and over and over and then you get tired of it, blitz and burned.
Also it does take talent to run this system effectively and I do believe we have some talent with the additions of Peppers and Pryor along with Kindred.
I feel we can make a huge jump on defense in year one of Greg Williams if the front 4 gets it done and our corners stay healthy. My big fear isn't the secondary giving up big plays over and over, its our front 4 being more of the same with no pressure and our secondary having to cover for 5-8 seconds, instead of 2.5 -5 seconds.

ON Paper we do not have any attractive stats or close to Pro Bowl players. It is heavily young.
Campbell, Kindred and Reynolds or very young who showed some growth/progress in the last season.
Out of the group I like Reynolds the best as he has been described as football intelligent and from what I saw his play got better as the season went on as well did the defensive play. Pryor and Peppers one or both should contribute but Peppers could be somebody special. He was not called onto cover much in college and played more LB than Safety. We have yet seen our defense but the word attack has been used more than once...he can be a very special player.
The possible unexpected support for this unit at FS could be Veteran McCourty recently acquired. I think that would change the entire unit if deemed to be the best option at FS.
Hard to say anything for sure as mentioned we don't have much history with these players. 3 of the most to help, Reynolds, Peppers and McCourty only Reynolds has some history. So who knows until we see some real football.

I feel this s going to be our Achilles heel. The original post brought up Caldwell as a possible safety. What makes anyone think k this is a possibility. Then Caldwell wasn't even listed in the possible player pool after being highlighted as an up and comer. Goes to show the lack of depth. Not to mention Tyvis Powell, who it seemed was being anointed as the second coming, even though he was cut from the Seahawks; reason being the depth chart was hard to crack.

It wouldn't hurt for the Browns defense to have a nickname; I like " The safety committee" , I also like, " Beware of D " .
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Since we have already had the "Dawg Pound", I would hope that the defense, should it improve to a top defense, would simply be called "Rabid".

Hey all, I like mushrooms too. Let's get crazy! What have we seen to deem this D worth a moniker?!? Alright I'll try, the "sieve by the shore". How about the "lost lineman". Maybe the "blitz is too slow". New year and all, but this franchise has done wore out my good nature; and I am a good natured dude.

Kindred is a thumper.

Who didn't show any ability to cover. As a rookie, in Horton's defense, with little threat of a pass rush. William's defense is not that defense. I look forward to seeing him on the field this preseason, to see if he can play FS in this defense.

if iF IF IF Joe can get in a time machine and be the player he was 3 years ago it would be huge for this defense.
Its not something I would count on, the NFL is a game of attrition and aging injured players don't usually reverse the trend of injury and decline in performance.

Mary Kay Cabot ✔ @MaryKayCabot #Browns Hue Jackson said Derrick Kindred will start out as the No. 1 free safety, Jabrill Peppers and other will compete at strong safety Did Hue actually say and mean that Kindred will start at Free Safety? I haven't heard or seen the presser where he supposedly said this. The reason I bring up the question is because reporters often time get something wrong in the translation from the coaches lips to their pens. It seems very odd for Hue to say that Kindred will start as FS when the incumbent FS is still on the roster. And IF he did say that Kindred will start at FS for training camp I would bet that Kindred will not be the starting FS come week 1.

Mary Kay Cabot ✔ @MaryKayCabot #Browns Hue Jackson said Derrick Kindred will start out as the No. 1 free safety, Jabrill Peppers and other will compete at strong safety Hmmm...I just listen to the presser and Hue said that Pryor would be the strating SS and he was non committal on the FS, but hinted that Peppers might be looked at (deep) FS. Where is this presser I listen to the one on the site and it was only 7 minutes long and he didn't mention Safeties or did i miss it? I can understand Hue saying Pryor will start at SS. They traded for him and even though he's barely an average SS he's still an upgrade over what we had last year at that spot. Also, I think Hue is taking the mode of Gregg Williams. Greg doesn't hand rookies jobs, especially safety. Even when Gregg had Sean Taylor he didn't start him at S week 1 and Gregg loved Sean. I think announcing Pryor as the starter at SS is a challenge to Peppers or anyone else who wants to play. I think the FS right now belongs to Ed Reynolds because he's really the only true FS on the roster (other then Nicua who is a rookie). he was non committal on the FS, but hinted that Peppers might be looked at (deep) FS.
I think Peppers will first steps on the defense at SS.But to me it only makes sense to me to try your most talented athlete at FS during camp. Peppers didn't play FS in college so the question remains whether or not he can in the NFL and they'll never know unless they try. Just because he wasn't asked to do it in college doesn't mean he can't.

Said he had a good offseason and looks good there. But also said there would be competition everywhere and the safety spots are fluid.

Hue discussed the safety spot in his presser with Sashi, not his opening day camp presser. http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/media-cen...0d-8469a67fc669Here's the transcript so you don't have to listen to it: On who will start at S at the beginning of training camp: Jackson: “I think (DB) Derrick Kindred will definitely be out there. Here's what the starting safety positions looks like right now:
Take all these guys...
Peppers, Jabrill Pryor, Calvin Campbell, Ibraheim Kindred, Derrick Reynolds, Ed Caldwell, Trey Nacua, Kai Currie, Justin
Put them out there and let them play for the next few weeks... Pick the two best players.
Viola!

Viola! We seem to have the same "type" of safety ... the thumper, big hitter, limited range ... Pryor, Kindred, Campbell, Peppers. Let's hope we can find a good balance of coverage too.

I didn't get the feeling that Hue is saying Kindred is the starting FS from that presser. It kinda sounds like Kindred and Peppers are battling for a safety position. And I would guess that would be SS. Although, like Hue said.......there are going to be many different packages and pairings out there.

Same here. Sounds like another case of reporter makes misremembering or misunderstanding or spinning a comment from a coach then it becoming accepted fact. It kinda sounds like Kindred and Peppers are battling for a safety position. And I would guess that would be SS....Although, like Hue said.......there are going to be many different packages and pairings out there. It seems like Hue was asked a question about Kindred. My thoughts as well. My guess is FS-Ed Reynolds SS-Peppers Dimelinebacker-Pryor/Kindred/IC

I agree about everyone except Peppers. Peppers certainly has the athletic ability to fluidly turn and run, change direction, close/burst on the ball and mirror/trial step for step. The question for me is can he learn everything else about the position?

I thought Ed Reynolds substituted for somebody last season, and took over for the remainder of the season because he was just better.
I see, Jabrill Peppers, as a disguised safety lining up in a linebacker's spot, with 2 or more other safeties.
I see McCourty, taking over the #1 Corner spot, for a time while Haden rotates back and becomes the deep coverage safety, or one or two deep coverage safeties.
I think Ogbah, is a linebacker in disguise, lining up on the D-line.
Kindred's natural home may be at the deepest safety position, When he started his time with the Browns he was there, I think, and maybe he's smarter on the responsibilities.
I like the Browns Db's in mass, I think the numbers game will help them mask their individual vulnerabilities, The problem is, when they get singled out, kind of culled from the herd, .. that one on one most/some of em can only (hold their water, so to speak) for a couple of plays here and there,
but if you put the whole game on them, without help, then they are scr, I mean it's going to go bad.
EDIT: When I say " I see" I mean it's what I think will happen, not trying to say I've witnessed anything, or don't ask me for a link, EDIT:

I like "lockdown on the lake" except it's got 5 syllables, hard for the crowd to chant it after a pass breakup like when Denver chants "in-com-plete" (had to look that up, always thought it was L.O.D.)
or as NFL.com referenced, the " legion of boom" in Seattle. I know they chant something in Green Bay after that guitar riff, but I forget it too.

I didn't get the feeling that Hue is saying Kindred is the starting FS from that presser. It kinda sounds like Kindred and Peppers are battling for a safety position. And I would guess that would be SS. Although, like Hue said.......there are going to be many different packages and pairings out there. Are you concerned, like me, of getting caught in a sub-package with 2 poor coverage safeties when the opposing offense sees it and decides to go no huddle? Just something I was pondering on a whim after looking at this thread.

The interesting thing for me is that Hue mentioned Kindred first, and said his name with confidence. and said he'll definitely be out there. everyone else, he kind of backed off a little bit.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

j/c...yeah don't know how Kindred starting at FS came out of that soundbite. Agree with others sounded like he will be "OUT THERE" and the (or Peppers) would tell us he's talking SS not FS.
Ed Reynolds was mentioned at FS and then it was said that Kindred could be out there but more determined by situations.
Really wish McCourty will win the FS job but rarely do we see positional changes. Running downs I wouldn't mind seeing Pyror and Peppers and then Nickel and Dime McCourty or Reynolds out there...just speculating and thinking out loud.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I think McCourty would only see time at FS if and only if Kindred completely botches the job.
