The Chargers are cursed. Stuff like this happens to them every season. https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/892876970442338304When I went to the Chargers/Browns game in San Diego a few years ago the Chargers were starting four backup linemen and DJ Fluker (who could barely walk).

I read that they counted it as a sack. My guess is that he got to the QB but held up. And Joe would have been flagged for holding.

Bruce Smith to Hue Jackson: Play Myles Garrett against Joe Thomas right now 1. He’s No. 1: Hue Jackson swears it was just coincidence that Myles Garrett’s first appearance with the No. 1 unit came on the day Hall of Fame pass rusher Bruce Smith visited to check on Garrett. “He’s earned it,” Jackson said. “I can only keep him down so long. He’s doing a good job. You watch the tape, you keep watching him getting better and better. He’s in shape. He understands our system better. He knows exactly what to do, so he’s starting to play a lot better. I think some of his teammates were wondering, ‘Coach, when are you guys going to put him up there? What are you doing?’” And so, with Joe Thomas working also, we witnessed our first confrontation between the future Hall of Fame left tackle and the No. 1 overall pick of the 2017 draft. They matched up on a couple occasions and Garrett nearly scored a touch-sack of Cody Kessler on a screen pass to Isaiah Crowell when Garrett beat Thomas off the snap and swooped into the quarterback. Smith said he recommended to Jackson to pair up Thomas and Garrett as much as possible. “He needs this experience right now of going against the best,” Smith said. “Joe could be an invaluable asset to Myles. To be communicate with him after a play is over, after a pass rush. He can teach him how to be a dominant player much quicker if he talks to him, what he did wrong or right, as opposed to remaining silent. Him engaging and playing and getting as much action against Joe as he possibly can while he’s a rookie is critical.” ADVERTISEMENT 2. Garrett on Joe: Garrett’s promotion resulted in a rare post-practice interview, conducted by the Browns’ public relation staff. “It was fun,” Garrett said of the big day. “It’s exciting to go against No. 73 and all of the first-teamers. That’s something I’m looking forward to doing this season. Just going against that level of talent, it gets me juiced and ready for our opponents.” Garrett conceded he didn’t win all his confrontations with Thomas. “I think I beat him on the last rush. But there was a rush where I tried to ‘bull’ and he started to slow me down,” he said. “Then, [Joel] Bitonio came and basically stopped me in my tracks. I heard Joe whisper to me, ‘Nice try.’ That’s going against one of the world’s best. You’re going to get better each day by doing that.” 3. Quarterback order unchanged: Two-minute drills operated by Kessler and Brock Osweiler each ended with interceptions in the end zone. Joe Haden picked off Kessler and Briean Boddy-Calhoun intercepted Osweiler after his pass glanced off the hands of receiver Jordan Leslie. “That’s disappointing,” Jackson said. “We’ve got to get better at that. We had a chance to make some plays and we didn’t make them – a drop here, drop there, a missed [throw]. It’s not another day at the office. We’ve got to get that fixed. Because that’s how you win or lose games. Whether it’s end of the half or end of the game, we’ve got to make those plays.” DeShone Kizer’s two-minute opportunity ended in an incompletion, a fumbled long snap resulting in a short Kizer run, a wobbly, across-the-body incompletion and a short completion to the sideline to set up a simulated field goal. Thus, Jackson said his QB order for the team scrimmage Friday will remain the same. “Right now, I don’t see any reason to change it. I’m going to stand back and evaluate it all Friday,” Jackson said. 4. Game simulation: Jackson will try to simulate a game at the Orange and Brown Scrimmage Friday in FirstEnergy Stadium. “We’ll divide the teams. We’ll do everything a game calls for. We’ll have halftime, coin toss, play it like a game, and see what we can accomplish,” he said. The whole scrimmage will have live tackling and the duration will depend on a yet-to-be determined number of plays. “I want to see our team compete. Certain guys I want to see perform. We’ll try to make that happen,” he said. 5. Quarterback update: Here are the passing numbers compiled by ESPN’s Jason Gibbs: Kessler, 6 of 13, one interception; Osweiler, 3 of 7, one INT; Kizer, 6 of 11; Kevin Hogan, 1 of 2. Six-day totals: Kessler, 36 of 56; Osweiler, 34 of 61; Kizer, 29 of 54; Hogan, 10 of 15. http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland/post/...homas-right-now

I don't like to see players hurt no matter who they play for. That being said, we've had more than our share of tough luck injuries over the years also.

Browns training camp snapshot (Day 6): Lineman Desmond Bryant returns to No. 1 defense Wednesday’s developments Browns veteran defensive lineman Desmond Bryant is back on track toward starting after missing the entire 2016 season with a torn pectoral muscle. Bryant appeared at tackle with the first-team defense during the sixth practice of training camp. It was the first time this summer he worked with the top unit. “He is Des Bryant, no doubt,” coach Hue Jackson said when asked if the player appears to have returned to form. “He is just another guy that needed to get in shape, get back to the grind of playing and understanding our defense because it is different.” Bryant, 31, is the elder statesman on the D-line and takes his leadership role seriously. “When I first came back, I would say I was a little bit hesitant to go out and start throwing around, ‘OK, I’m the boss around here,’” Bryant said. “I felt like I had to go on the field and prove it. We’ve had a couple of days of practice now. I went out there and made some plays and reminded everybody who forgot, new guys who are here, who I am, and now I’ve been more vocal. “Now that I’m back, I have so much greater appreciation for the game. You never know when your last snap is. I could have not made it back, but I was fortunate to be back, and I’m going to cherish every moment while I’m here and try to do the best I can.” • Jackson explained the format for the Orange & Brown Scrimmage, which is scheduled to run from 5-7 p.m. Friday at FirstEnergy Stadium. “We will divide the teams,” Jackson said. “We will have halftime. We will have a coin toss. We will play it like a game, situational football and see what we can accomplish.” Jackson added there will be live tackling. • Quarterbacks Cody Kessler and Brock Osweiler each ended the two-minute drill with an interception. Cornerback Joe Haden jumped to intercept Kessler’s heave into the end zone, and cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun picked off Osweiler’s pass after it deflected off the hands of wide receiver Jordan Leslie, who leaped and extended his arms in an attempt to grab the high throw. “That is disappointing,” Jackson said of the interceptions. “We have to get better at that. We had a chance to make some plays, too, and did not make them. We had a drop here, a drop there and missed balls. You cannot miss those.” • Rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer, who continued to split first-team repetitions with Kessler, stalled during his turn in the two-minute drill. Jackson, though, gave him an extra play, and he completed a 6-yard pass to receiver Mario Alford on an out route to set up a 42-yard field goal. • Cornerback Marcus Burley suffered a laceration and did not finish practice. An athletic trainer held a towel over Burley’s left eye as he walked off the field. Burley suffered the injury as he collided with wide receiver Rashard Higgins during a seven-on-seven drill. • Rookie tight end David Njoku jumped in the back of the end zone to make a circus catch with linebacker Joe Schobert and rookie safety Jabrill Peppers covering him. The highlight was a good sign for Njoku, the 29th overall draft pick, because he had been plagued by dropped passes in camp. “Everybody was excited for him because everybody knows the pressure that he has been under that way,” Jackson said. “He has to make those plays, and he can. He demonstrates that he can. He just has to do it all of the time.” • Rookie Zane Gonzalez made all five of his field goals. Cody Parkey missed one from 39 yards. http://www.ohio.com/sports/browns/browns...efense-1.784996

good news about Bryant, Njoku, and Gonzalez
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Training Camp Log, Day 6 TWO-MINUTE WOES: Cody Kessler and Brock Osweiler threw interceptions, and DeShone Kizer needed help from a phantom penalty to get in position for a field goal try. The two-minute drill wasn’t kind to the offense, continuing a trend of the first week of camp. Kessler got two first downs before a spike, incompletion and interception by cornerback Joe Haden on a Hail Mary from the 30-yard line. Osweiler picked up one first down, was sacked and intercepted by Briean Boddy-Calhoun on a high pass that went off the hands of receiver Jordan Leslie. ADVERTISEMENT Receiver Ricardo Louis made a leaping 31-yard catch down the seam from Kizer, but tight end Seth DeValve dropped one down the seam. NEWS OF THE DAY: Rookie defensive end Myles Garrett and veteran defensive tackle Desmond Bryant were promoted to the first-team defense. Hall of Fame defensive end Bruce Smith visited and gave pointers to the linemen. CAMPER OF THE DAY: Receiver Rannell Hall. A dark horse to be the No. 3 wideout, Hall had a productive day. He caught a 17-yarder from Kessler on fourth-and-6 and an 11-yarder from Kessler. He grabbed two hitches from Osweiler and drew a pass interference penalty on a heave downfield by Osweiler. PLAY OF THE DAY: Rookie tight end David Njoku ran a post, then went up and over linebacker Joe Schobert and safety Jabrill Peppers in the end zone. And he caught the ball. Njoku, who has struggled with drops, got to his feet and let out his frustration with a demonstrative spike. QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Unlimited amount of potential. He is a very, very talented player. You see it from Day 1 out here. I mean, sky’s, honestly, the limit for him. I really see great things for him in the future.” — Bryant on Garrett. Desmond Bryant - DL - Browns
Browns DL Desmond Bryant "isn't assured of a roster spot." Bryant is healthy after missing all last year, but his age and salarly are working against him with the Browns in full rebuild. It's possible he'll be shopped during the preseason. Cleveland would save $3 million from releasing Bryant.
Source: Scott Petrak on Twitter Aug 2 - 4:35 PM I'll repeat my earlier position. If Brantley and Ogunjobi prove to be reliable and promising, I see no point keeping Bryant...even if assuming Bryant is the best of the three. And I'll gladly say Bryant is the best option at the 3T at the present time. But this team has a long way to go, and I don't expect that Bryant is a part of the future. Might as well see what we have. Considering Brantley's broken finger, that could delay a decision in this regard. We'll see.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Myles Garrett earns promotion to first team Posted by Charean Williams on August 2, 2017, 7:37 PM EDT Well, that didn’t take long. During the offseason program, the Browns worked Myles Garrett with the second and third teams as coach Hue Jackson said the No. 1 overall pick would have to earn the starting job. On Wednesday, Garrett earned the promotion to the first team . . . and then showed why. With his mentor, Bruce Smith, watching, Garrett blew by All-Pro left tackle Joe Thomas for a would-be sack of Cody Kessler. “I saw a blur go around me, I didn’t know who was over there,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I’m not surprised by anything he does, he just has to do it every day. Gotta do it every day and keep getting better.” Smith, who holds the NFL’s all-time sack record with 200, famously told Garrett before the draft that he needed to anticipate the snap better. “It was a great rush,” Smith said, complimenting Garrett. Of course, it’s also the only time Garrett beat Thomas in half a dozen or so one-on-ones. “I beat him on the last rush,” Garrett said. “But there was a rush where I tried to ‘bull,’ and he started to slow me down. Then, [Joel] Bitonio came and basically stopped me in my tracks. I heard Joe whisper to me, ‘Nice try.’ That’s going against one of the world’s best. You’re going to get better each day by doing that.” http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/08/02/myles-garrett-earns-promotion-to-first-team/

I was up at training camp today and I will say that Garrett is a monster in person. He blew up the line several times and would have had 3 sacks had he been allowed to hit the QB. Just watching him out there, he looks like a star.
Haden picked off Kessler in the end zone in 11 on 11 drills when Kessler rolled out to his right and tossed one in the end zone from about 25-30 yards out.
Osweiller was picked off by Boody-Calhoun after the ball went through the hands of Jordan Leslie.
The new RB, Brandon Wilds, had a nice catch in the flat and took it up the sideline for a TD.
Higgins fought for a TD and smashed his way in the end zone knocking out DB Burley on the play.
Seth DeValve dropped a wide open pas from Kizer, but came back to catch several others.
Njoku had a couple of nice TD catches.
Peppers, Haden and Corey Coleman all fielded punt returns.
Gregg Williams is very vocal.
Isaiah Crowell had a big run in 11 on 11 drills.

I keep hearing Ranell Hill having good days ... seems to me to be a good shot to be on the team

Seems like 8 is the total number of D linemen....maybe 9 as a stretch.
Four of those guys listed make the team. Maybe 2 go to the practice squad.
If Bryant comes back strong, he is a starter with Danny. If some of the young guys impress, maybe he does get traded. Curious...how many DL did we carry last year when we ran a 3-4 base D? Now we are utilizing a 4 man line I can ASSume we will have 2 more DL on our roster than last year!
Just trying to use logic.

But was the TE supposed to chip Garrett? Does it matter? It's training camp. Yes it matters. If the TE was supposed to chip the DE and didn't, that's one of those things you want to fix before it matters. As I was reading later, though, that was the only sack or pressure Garrett got on Thomas the entire practice.

I believe this is correct, the other pressures/sacks Garrett got were on Coleman and Erving when they subbed in for Thomas, if I recall correctly. The one he got on Thomas he blew by him around the outside.

I'm pretty sure the TE missed his chip block on him on that play .. either that or its a horribly designed blocking scheme out of that formation .... I wanted Mitch ... and i wasn't that impressed with MG's film .... but i can't wait to see what MG does ... he does have physical skills u just can't teach ... he may end up being real fun .... were overdue in that category, thats for sure ...

I believe we carried 7 D lineman for most of the year. I think that we'l keep 9 DL, 5 or 6 LB, and 10-11 DB, given William's preferred 4-3 alignment, and preference for playing Niclek a lot. He loves to rotate his DL .... and we'll see Collins and Kirksey on the field for 3 downs.

Saw positional coach interview and they are amazed with his physical but he is very raw at the basics. Dude has really bad hand technique. He has the raw potential but raw is the word.

I wouldn't be surprised if he comes up with an 'injury' that places him on the PUP before the final cuts. This will allow him to redshirt without exposing him on the practice squad. Giving him a year to work on his craft. Allowing us to keep someone like Bryant for some veteran leadership. Just a hunch.

No...is it on the board? if so where...so I can know exactly what you all are talking about
Oh the twitter one just above...just saw it. Yep exactly what I said...we had no chip blocker TE went immediately out for his route - Garrett went to 9 tech Joe pre snap points to him as in I got him. Joe Kicks steps immediately to pick him up and Garrett just plain ole beats him...who was the QB cause he made a great throw completing that pass to Crowell almost for a TD...let see if I can tell.
Kessler...go job there. Also I think that was set up for a quick screen so maybe why JT was a tad slow???

Thats a tough ass block for any LT including Joe ... sorry ... we have to disagree ... with that much space its not a very well designed play to not have a chip ...
Your giving the DE a 3 or 4 step head of steam before JT can touch him ... MG saw that and took advantage ...

Welcome to Cleveland Browns daily-yearly, since 1991, well, since the start of Free Agency many years ago. They have not let that stop them in the past, in fact: that would be a very Cleveland Browns thing to do! It's almost the signature calling card of the Browns organization of the last 25 years.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Its a designed screen pass you don't want the DE planted close to the LOS and even if a regular pass I cannot remember the last time JOE T had a chip blocker for him by design. But it was a Screen last thing you want is that DE to be hanging around the edge. If there was no screen Crowell was there to block Garrett also.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I did also notice that the QB (Kessler?) didn't step up at all. Was he supposed to, or just keep dropping back? I suppose he was supposed to keep dropping back to draw the rush since it was a screen.

I agree BUT the 9th lineman will come down to them being able to play on Special teams IMO.
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.
