They will keep drugs illegal. Think of the effects on our economy if they legalize it:

What do we do with all these unemployed law enforcement people? (and that's just the first thing that pops into my head)

So can cigarettes, but watch all of us dummies flock to the store to buy them because we are to lazy to grow our own tobacky

Easier said than done...that's a complex solution to a complex problem. The drug problem isn't solved by arresting the petty corner dealers, or their suppliers. They're both small time. It has to be stopped at the borders. If we keep it from being flown and smuggled in, the supply line stops. But then, you'll definitely see an effect on the economy.

As far as blacks and drugs...they're just too readily available for sale and consumption in black neighborhoods. Thus, ending the supply line.

Agreed, it's a complex problem with no one answer.... a large part of the problem is "the cycle".. it's readily available, options for success are few, peer pressure is high so folks get into drugs, pretty much guaranteeing that they never get out of the neighborhood then they have kids in the same neighborhood, it's readily available, options are few... and on and on... it takes a strong individual to break that cycle.... I know a couple individuals who did, which is why I always include the fact that it's possible, but it is, by no means, easy.

I couldn't agree more...it's a "vicious cycle". Right now, I can't say there's an end in sight, as times become harder, and prices rise, it's harder to shake tha apathy that poverty instills. I try to convey and break down the cycle to the youth, but they see fast money as a way out...unfortunately that way out is usually in the back seat...either of a squad car, or a hearst!

Which is exactly what a elected official just wrote.

I will also add... I think it's great that the NBA gets involved and that famous music artists get involved and when they support the inner city, I think it's great... but in the end, it's not nearly enough. In fact I think it's part of the problem... as you say, "fast money"... well what are the two legit ways these kids see fast money? Sports and rap.... They need more "realistic role models"... accountants, engineers, computer techs, doctors/nurses, whatever... jobs they actually have a chance to get through their own hard work even if they're not 6'9" or run a 4.2.....

I don't know how to break the cycle.. but then I've never been in the cycle.... something has to change that says, "Odds are you aren't going from the hood to the penthouse, it's ok to start at $35K a year and wear respectable clothes to work.".... and not be called a sell-out. It just seems, from the outside looking in, that so many have an all-or-nothing attitude toward the whole thing that says, if I can't go all the way to multi-millionaire, then what's the point in trying..... maybe I'm wrong, but that's the way I see it, and that's what frustrates the crap out of me....

Like I said in that thread...I have no problem with how he feels...if he wanted to send that letter as a private citizen, go for what you know...but as an elected official, using the language he used...it crossed the line in my view.

I'm not talking just meth here Derden. Pot is inexpensive to grow and could be done cheaper at home than paying for it at a pharmacy. And it could be sold cheaper as there would be no middle man to pay.

And do you seriously think making drugs legal would drive prices way down? You underestimate the true greediness of our lovely government. Just look to alcohol and tobacco as an example.

I find the grounds you're basing this on VERY far fetched!

Firstly, you do NOT risk MAJOR prison time not to make "big bucks". You can produce pot cheaper than booze. "ageing, processing, distilling, etc". And you can STILL get a fifth of something decsent for $20. How much of that is tax? 20%,50%,75%?????

You can make a pack of joints for close to the same as a pack of cigarettes. Under $5. So even if they tax it 300%,you're still looking at $20 for 20 joints.

So a guy is going to risk a long prison term for LESS money than that? Not uless he's "ate up with the dumb ass"! It's innexpencive to grow NOW. And most people who grow it domesticly, sale it themselves now. In other words,no middle man.

If you can go to a state store, choose from LOTS of varieties, easily, cheaply and legaly, you'll soon find NO market illegaly for it.

Just like moonshine. Sure, there a "few" here and there who brew it. But I'd be willing to bet that it accounts for less than 1% of the alcohol market on a national scale.

Nobody in their right mind would risk growing it,buying it or saling it illegaly "on the cheap". The risk far outweighs the demand and penalties involved.

Just show me examples of "illegal beer producers"? How about "illegal cigarette manufacturers"? There aren't any. Sure a criminal may go to "another type of crime". But what does that have to do with "taking the criminal element out of the drug trade"? Nothing that I can see.

You see, most pot smokers aren't "big time criminals". If they had a "choice" they would much rather do it in a legal fashion.

I don't know of ONE PERSON who has EVER dealt weed, who would attempt to grow or distribute pot trying to compete with legalized pot prices. And I know LOTS of them first hand. The crime would no longer be worth the time. Take huge profits out,you take the criminals out.

Just like "your family" went into other "forms of business" when prohibition ended, the same holds true with drugs. History is a valuable lesson.

Damn DC...you should come speak at the Salvation Army on Hough!!!

Seriously though...I couldn't agree more. I never thought sports was my way out...then again, I didn't grow up in poverty, but I have plenty of relatives that did...and are now raising their own kids in that poverty. They had opportunities and didn't take advantage of them. I had a cousin that was gonna go to college on a basketball scholarship (this was before the straight to the league, before Kobe, KG, and Bron)...unfortunately, a week before he was to leave...a hater shot him in the face, at the Salvation Army on Hough, in front of the kids he was coaching.

You know GM? I could swear we have borders that need secured, ports that need tighter security, nuclear weapons facilities that aren't as secure as they should be.............

Hmmmm. And inner city crime, gangs, terror threats,etc....

Maybe if we weren't investing so much manpower and money on trying to wipe out drugs,we could redirect our money and manpower on more important things?????

Or,maybe not.

I guess it's splitting hairs but in the end, it wouldn't matter if he sent the letter on government letterhead or not.. in the end every article about it would refer to his position in the government... That would be like Phil Savage calling a Browns player out and saying that he was doing it as a fan and not as the GM... do you think anybody would buy that? The guy just had a couple parts that went too far...

That...and him using city stationary and cc'ing so many other people too...I thought that was too far also.

His language was a bit abusive, but like I said, I really didn't have a problem with what he said, just how he said it. It's the same thing I would say to someone, but then again, I'm not an elected official.

The correct answer would be "the ones in my district and I swear to do everything in my power to make sure they are all open and honest to members of every race creed, and color. I also pledge to give all employees and shoppers of those toy stores huge tax breaks, and to make sure they pay a livable wage, and include great health insurance."

I agree...it's a tough cycle to break. When you have drug pushers and pimps running the neighboorhoods and telling young kids, "you can make lots of money fast this way" and then they(pimps and pushers) show the kids the new cars or nice jewelry they have and compare that to the people that make money the legal way...Some kids, pimps and pushers are ALL they know. Sometimes there is no one to tell them there is a RIGHT way to be successful, but then again some want they faster way out. It's a cycle that's hard to break. I have decent things in my life...I've worked hard to get them and I am proud as a black man, that I have achieved them the legal way. I have black friends who have become successful with their own businesses. We run into kids all the time who are heading the wrong way in life. We just spoke to a 22 yr old black man who just had a baby with his girlfriend at my friends store and he is known for "the five finger discount" of items and has his girlfriend steal as well. We jumped in his stuff not only for that, but because he was complaining about not finding work and while complaining a woman in the store overheard us talking and she offered him a JOB working on fences right there and then!!! Mind you, she didn't even know this man from Adam and offered him a job on the spot. She gave him her number and said for him to call her later this afternoon for work. You know this man TURNED DOWN the offer!!! A chance for him to start on the right path and cut the risk of him and his girlfriend going to jail. The chance for their newborn to have a mom and dad and to not be sent to a foster home because its parents aren't both in jail??? HE TURNED THE JOB DOWN!!! because he wants quick money now and not work hard. We all were disgusted to say the least. He got cussed out by one of my friends employees because she worked with him at another job and she said he was always lazy and didn't want to work...It's a shame.
