LiAngelo Ball, brother of the Lakers' Lonzo Ball and son of the inimitable LaVar Ball, is the most widely known of the three UCLA basketball players arrested last week on charges of shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store in Hangzhou, China. Ball and his teammates have finally been released by authorities — and, whether ESPN likes it or not, they've got President Trump to thank for it.

The players — Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill —​ were arrested last Tuesday for allegedly attempting to steal sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store, authorities initially threatening the three young men with the possibility of ten years in prison.




Early Tuesday morning, the players were released from Chinese custody and safely boarded a 9 a.m. Delta flight to come home, according to the Wall Street Journal. Their release came less than 24 hours after Trump personally intervened on their behalf in a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump spoke with the Chinese president on Monday while on a two-day trip to Beijing. The Washington Post reports that President Trump revealed that he had brought up the players' release amid a discussion of other topics, including a bilateral trade deal and the nuclear threat posed by North Korea.

"They're working on it right now," Trump told the press Monday. "Hopefully everything is going to work out," he added.

A report by ESPN over the weekend indicated that the players would at least have to stay for another "week or two" and that authorities say they have surveillance footage showing the players shoplifting not just from Louis Vuitton, but two other stores.

"A source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation said the players could be in Hangzhou for a 'week or two,'" ESPN reported. "The source noted that there is surveillance footage of the players shoplifting from three stores inside of a high-end shopping center, which houses Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Salvatore Ferragamo stores."

Regardless on the feelings of Trump, ball better be on his knees thanking trump. The Chinese will lock people up for anything. Trump did a good job telling Xi to ease up on the kids.

Kids made a dumbass decision in a country that doesn’t tolerate dumbass decisions.

Remember basketball is freaking huge in China, and they love the American players over there. This is probably a case of them simply not thinking they would get in trouble.

I think this served as a valuable lesson to not only them, but to other kids who go there in the future not to screw up. There’s a good chance that the Chinese wouldn’t had slammed them anyway, but needed to send a strong message through the way of scaring the absolute crap out of these kids.

Possibly, I just cant see past the stupidity I guess. lol

I think we should have some type of agreement with other countries that for their release to us, they get held to trial with our laws and our punishments, but china is crazy with that kind of stuff.

There's a lot of crazy things going on there. The bougie high end fashion market in China is crazy expensive. It's far cheaper to buy that crap in the Beverly Hills center or in the Midwest. Trust me, my freshman year of college my roommate was from Tianjin and was involved in buying a bunch of designer clothes and reselling them over there. If they were smart they'd steal the sunglasses from sunglasses hut and re-sell them in China (Don't even get me started on Luxotica). Not saying they should, but if they were smart. You ever see a dude work at Sunglasses Hut? I've never seen one. I had a few friends who worked at SH and they would tell me they got shoplifted from like twice a month. They were smart and beautiful women, but they couldn't intimidate anyone.

The funniest thing about this, is why is UCLA playing a game in China during the middle of a semester? What if these players were going to spend 3 months in a Chinese jail. What would UCLA's culpability be there? They pimp out these athletes for an "education" and then make them do crazy stunts during the middle of their first academic semester of the year, which consequently could have cost them the entirety of their first semester. I assume since the NCAA is a bastion of good, they would allow the players to resume playing after their sentence, because the NCAA needs the money that they bring in. This whole thing is just a bunch of stupid, piled on more stupid, solved in a very stupid manner. It'd be sad if it wasn't so funny.

The president responded after LaVar Ball, the outspoken father of UCLA player LiAngelo Ball, downplayed Trump’s effort.

Trump said while on his recent trip to Asia, at the same time the players allegedly shoplifted in China during a basketball tournament, that he had spoken directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the matter.

I wonder why the way Ball's dad is acting would cause him to say he should have left "them in jail"? Why would you leave the other two in jail because of something one of their dad's said?
