FAIRFIELD, Texas — A suspect in the Thanksgiving Day shooting death of a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was captured Thursday night, authorities said.

Earlier in the evening, shots were fired after the suspect in the Freestone County shooting was spotted in Waller County.

"Shots have been fired in the area of Liendo Parkway and Wyatt Chapel," read a post on the Waller County Sheriff's Office Facebook page early Thursday night. "Please stay out of the area."

Waller County is located northwest of Houston.

Texas state trooper Damon Allen, 41, was shot and killed at about 4 p.m. CT on Interstate 45 just south of Fairfield in Freestone County.

The suspect has been identified by authorities as 32-year-old Dabrett Black of Lindale.

According to the DPS Twitter account, the trooper stopped a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu for a traffic violation on southbound I-45 in Freestone County south of Fairfield.

Allen made contact with the driver and as he returned to the patrol unit the suspect fired multiple shots from a rifle at the officer, DPS tweeted.

The trooper died at the scene.

The suspect fled south on I-45 in a 2012 Chevy Malibu, which was later located in Waller County, the DPS said, identifying the suspect as Black.

Black has a previous criminal history that includes evading arrest and violence toward law enforcement, authorities said.

In July, WFAA's sister station CBS19 in Tyler reported Black was jailed in Smith County after a car chase with deputies. The chase ended when Black struck a patrol vehicle and both he and a deputy were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Black was charged with evading arrest, aggravated assault against a public servant and reckless driving.

"I am saddened to hear of the tragic death of a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper killed today in Freestone County," said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. "This trooper died selflessly serving Texas. Please join Angela and me as we pray for the trooper's family and for the entire Department of Public Safety."

Gov. Greg Abbott also reacted to the fatal shooting from his Twitter account.

"Sad on Thanksgiving to lose one of our state troopers in the line of duty," he wrote. "Prayers for his family. Swift justice for his killer."

Allen, a father of three, joined the department in 2002, DPS said on Twitter.

"Trooper Allen's dedication to duty, and his bravery and selfless sacrifice on this Thanksgiving Day, will never be forgotten," the department said in a tweet.

It seems like people don't care if police officers are killed.

Double standard from those who cry the most.

They only care if black guys get killed by cops ... other than that ... no biggie ..

Chicago is a shooting gallery every weekend ... half a dozen young black men killed on a “slow” weekend by other young black men ... NO BIGGIE ...

A cop kills a black man that has a gun and all holy hell breaks out ...

See HANDS UP DONT SHOOT witch was a COMPLETE and UTTER LIE ...

No biggie ... they support a group founded with that as one of their three main tenants ...

Sad sad sad ...

Why must you use blanket statements about minority groups?

Ever live, work, or interact with individuals from areas where they feel oppressed by law enforcement?

For the record, it's awful this officer was shot.

However, please fully educate yourself on this issue before walking in with GOP talking points. Experience and actual action means more than political feelings

Thanks,

Hands up don’t shoot, young black men being gunned down by other young black men in Chicago and now Baltimore ... those are GOP talking points ... those inner cities aren’t shooting galleries every single weekend ....

Stupid me ... once again thanks for the education teach .... rolleyes

Thats right ... i forgot .. it doesn’t affect U so NO BIGGIE ...

Where’s my BLANKET STATEMENT about all minorities or ANY minority group for that matter ... sounds an awful lot like your ASSuming something thats not there ... that’d be a pretty shallow thing for ANYONE to think ... it would also be pretty dumb seeing as how STUPID and UN TRUE it is ... maybe your the one that needs some educating there teach ... thumbsup

i’ll be waiting for u to quote me my BLANKET STATEMENT ...

I have said many times that A-holes are A-holes and they can come in all COLORS, NATIONALITIES, RELIGIONS, AGES and GENDERS ....same as good people come in all colors, nationalities etc, etc ... but that doesn’t fit your perception of me so it can’t possibly be true ...

For the record .... theres many many people that don’t look Iike me, don’t have the same religious beliefs as me, weren’t born in the same country as me and aren’t the same sex as me that i would much rather have as neighbors than folks that do look like me, etc etc ...

PS. U have no clue what my life experiences are ... NONE ... ASSuming can be a huge mistake sometimes ... think about that one teach ... thumbsup

Water off a duck's back bro.

I would like to point out that none of those guys tried to call me out for not commenting on the topic or asked for my thoughts on it.

Why ask? It's obvious?

People care, most people care.. and everybody seems to cry the most that others don't cry enough...

It shouldn't but it does still amaze me how quickly the loss of innocent life gets turned into a political football for people to prove a point.

The cop that died is tragic.
The innocent black kid in Cleveland that died is tragic.
The youth pastors family that died is tragic.

None more tragic than another... #allgodschildren

I get that you are trying to make a point and I am good w/that. But maybe you could do it w/out deliberately misinterpreting my intent.

I think you are smart enough to know I was talking about the "outrage" or lack thereof, on this board.
