I have some thoughts:

We fired Sashi Brown after [almost] two years because we were really bad. Sashi Brown was specifically hired to be really bad.

Firing Sashi Brown this quickly is Jimmy Haslam admitting a mistake in hiring Sashi Brown. Haslam clearly doesn't think Brown is the person to run the team anymore. What changed between then and now?

Jimmy Haslam is clearly the problem. He either doesn't know how to hire the right person (Banner, Farmer, and/or Brown) or doesn't give people enough time to work (Banner, Farmer, and/or Brown).

Dorsey would be great. I expect some other candidates to be Fitterer, Paton, and Wolf, and maybe Caserio.

They may as well reboot now rather then waste a year with a new GM saddled with a HC and QB from the previous regime.

I wonder if Hue could still land a HC job? Giants?

I think Hue Jackson could land a "head coach in waiting" job with the Bengals. Other than that, no. Guys don't recover quickly after losing this much.

People are doing a ton of speculation, which is fine.

but i wonder why it's so one sided? i keep reading from posters talking about the GM shouldn't be strapped with Hue and etc.

why no mention of the flip side by any of you guys?

Hue is well respected around the league. what if there's actually no problems with retaining Hue, because the GM's around the league as well as future FO guys that comes here, wants Hue to be the guy from the jump because again, people around the league view hue as a good coach?

people are assuming a GM would be saddled, but yet not taking into account the counter argument that the GM would VIEW it as being saddled with an HC because he views him a good coach to begin with.

He might get a 'pass' if resigns. The dude coaching the Jags now was the HC on the Bills and resigned.

Bengals would never do it. OC is the best Hue can hope, and even that I have serious doubts...

again though, that's an assumption that the GM would want his own guy over happily taking Hue.

for all we know, the Dorsey guy that is rumored to be a top candidate only wants the job if Hue stays.

or anybody we already considered already were fine with keeping Hue as their HC.

Sashi Brown had to go. You don't roll up that kind of record without someone being accountable.

Haslam announced Hue stays. You don't make that kind of announcement and then he gets fired.

Hue is staying.

Just because a new guy is coming in does not mean he has to hire his own guy. That is the norm but each case is different.

I am sure behind the scenes Haslam got the true picture of what was happening between Brown and Hue.

Haslam knows how Hue is perceived by the players in the league and within NFL circles.

The question now of course is who replaces Brown and how will the chain of command work?

I think it is highly unlikely that a potential GM candidate would have discussed that with the team at this point in the process.

He was hired to be bad is only part of the equation. He was also tasked with acquiring organizational changing talent. He failed. What may have changed in Haslam's mind? Probably watching Wentz and Watson (when healthy) light it up.

I think Kevin Kleps of Crain's makes a valid point:

Kevin Kleps
@KevinKleps
I'm already dreading the Sashi/Hinkie comparisons we're going to be reading about.
Hinkie acquired all of the best young 76ers, with exception of Ben Simmons, but you and me could've picked him No. 1. The Browns have an absolute mess at the most important position in sports.

continued....

Kevin Kleps
@KevinKleps
And it's a position at which Sashi and his crew (including Hue) performed the worst. So if the Browns nail the QB next year, assuming Sashi and Co. would've is quite the leap.

As far Haslam goes, I agree with you 100%. He is a serious threat to the success of the Browns. Haslam keeps bumbling around because he remains hands on and will not admit what he does not know.

Marrone had an opt out in his contract. If the Bills were sold while he was the head coach, he could opt out. He was also 15-17 as the Bills head coach.

Swish,

As ed said, GM is above the HC, and decides his fate.

Also, I'd like to add that I think the luster on Hue has probably worn off after so many losses, the FO intrigue (speaking through the media). I don't think he's as popular around the league as when he showed up here (just my guess).

Well respected by who? What has ever Hue show to be well respected?

Romeo was very respected, he had SB rings, he was a elite DC... But Hue Jackson... Former Hc of the Okland Raiders and OC of the Bengals....

He was more respected than Pettine, which is not that hard, but that is it

I think Hue Jackson is a strong candidate for the worst HC in the history of the NFL.... He already holds several records...

The club is alive and well fellow Dawg. The new mantra will be that the existing HC will get along swimmingly with the new GM. Riiiight. I'm going to the bank to get a lollipop.

There are more people in the FO than just the tie-breaker guy who just got canned. The lollipop club will now watch Hue's interaction with the talent-evaluators in the FO. Here's to hoping they can all get along. fingerscrossed

I don't like this for a few reasons. Sashi should never have been put in the position to make draft picks BUT building the analytics dept, negotiating contracts, and building both cap space and draft resources have NEVER been managed better IMHO. We should have added a GM and moved him to a position to handle the other stuff.

Well, i'm glad Hue stays and i hope whatever GM comes in wants Hue to stay as well.

Hue is a good HC and a good play caller who got robbed of having his own franchise picks in the name of tradebacks and removing veteran leadership from the team for bums like calvin pryor and kenny britt.

Hue and Sachi are hands down the worst in the Browns History, and probably on the NFL history also...

Both deserve to be fired...

And IMHO Hue is good at nothing.... Play Calling is atrocious... game management... atrocious.. team discipline... worst ever...

I doubt that Sachi had any say on the guys that suited up....

I think Vers wanted Sachi to take the fall and to retain Hue..

Maybe Haslam has hired Vers has a consultant.... He will be our football guy.

That's the only explanation for this...

I see no evidence of this at all. Time will tell. But I do think Hue can grow into the job. I also don't want to lose our DC.

I can't say I am shocked. Someone was bound to take the fall for such a poor record. It does appear that the apparent toxic relationship between the FO and the coaching staff proved to be too much to overcome.

I do have some thoughts on Sashi:

--He did leave us w/a lot of draft picks.

--He passed on many good players.

--Many of his picks are questionable.

--His handling of some of our free agents was not good for the team or a good look w/other players and agents.

--The apparent perception of how other teams viewed him during trades was also not a good look.

--Some of his roster decisions were terrible, such as cutting players and keeping his draft picks.

--I doubt that he will get another high-ranking NFL position again.

His overall record and his lack of qualifications for such a position are simply too poor.

results are all that matters. Frustration at the very top probably got the better of Haslam. Really hard to blame him. But I think at this point, what's the difference.

I'd have rathered see them stick to the plan for another year.. Might have been a bit hard to swallow.

I have a lot I could say on this.... and I'm sure the anti-front office people are rejoicing. And I'm sure certain people are going to give me a lot of grief about this post...

I think it's crazy how many people still think Sashi was the talent evaluator. Berry is the man in that department and he's still here.

I don't have an issue with Sashi or Depodesta being let go if a lot of the other talent guys stay. I think it's crazy to think we've had our two best drafts in years and perhaps two best drafts of any other team in the NFL, but Haslam comes out and says he wants to upgrade his personnel department. Why not just come out and say they didn't get us a quarterback?

I am in shock and I'll be even more shocked if Hue actually does stay, but I guess I shouldn't be. People have been clamoring for years that Haslam is a terrible owner and this is just more proof of it. I always gave the benefit of the doubt.

I think I'm most upset because all signs are pointing towards Hue staying and we probably already know who our GM will be...and being hired on the condition that Hue stays. I mean there are people here who are loving this. I've read many many books and articles on NFL dynasties, how to build a team, etc and this isn't it. I don't know how so many people can be happy about this. You take a rather unsuccessful 3 year HC and make the next GM commit to him? Oh boy.

Of course we could go 8-8 the next two years with Hue and all the Hue fans will be saying I told you so. Kudos to you!

I liked this front office because they brought in a lot of good young talent and made a lot of necessary unpopular moves. They had a plan and it was working, evidence by the early draft picks in the upcoming draft, the improved team defense, but there's no doubt in my mind that Jimmy wanted to make the popular move. He was ridiculed the minute Sashi was hired. He needs people in the seats. I think the front office was on their way and all he had to do was leave it alone. If that meant staying with Hue so be it. And apparently my sources were wrong about Hue being out the door... Simply just a crazy and sad day for the Browns.

I think it's clear Hue won the power battle between he and Sashi. I think it is also clear, based on the reports that are out about Sashi and Hue not talking and working together, that in that situation, someone needed to go. You can't have a functional team without the HC and head FO guy joined at the hip.

However, when needing to make a choice, I think Haslem made the wrong one. We'll see.

The next GM or whatever title he'll have is coming into a pretty good spot.
