I saw that we had a thread on Kirk Cousins, so I thought we should have a thread on our free agent QB acquisition. His ruling for free agency is on February 15th, but he recently said this about the Browns. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2018/01/aj_mccarron_on_tua_tagovailoa.htmlAJ McCarron on Tua Tagovailoa, the botched Browns trade & when he almost transferred from Alabama McCarron's status nearly changed on Oct. 31, the day of the NFL trade deadline. It appeared he was headed to the Cleveland Browns -- where he would have been reunited with former Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson -- but the deal fell through, reportedly because Cleveland filed the paperwork after the 4 p.m. Eastern deadline.
"It was an odd deal," McCarron said. "I got a text from my agent at 3:34 saying 'hey, there's a possible trade going down. Stay by your phone. I'll let you know.' I got another call from him right at 4 saying 'from what I know, it's a done deal. I'll call you back in a minute and let you know.' The next call I got was at 4:03 and he's 'hey, the trade didn't go through. They didn't get the paperwork in on time.' Everybody has a story. I'm sure Cleveland has their own story, Cincy has their own story. But it's just one of those things, when you think you've seen everything, you're shown a little bit more.
"I think the only people who truly know what happened were the ones leading the whole situation on both sides."
Cleveland went on to go 0-16 in 2017, leading many to believe McCarron dodged a bullet by not being traded to the Browns. However, there are only 32 starting quarterback jobs in the NFL, and McCarron said he felt capable he could succeed as one, no matter the team.
"As a competitor, I wanted that opportunity, just to be able to showcase and help a team win ball games," McCarron said. "I think I would have had some success playing for Hue. I would have loved the opportunity to go up there and get them a win, more than one win. As a competitor, that's all you can ask for."

Funny. I felt the Browns dodged a bullet by not giving up a 2nd and a 3rd for him...

If he's unrestricted I would go after him. If it would cost anything to get him, no.

I would rather sign McCarron than trade a 2nd round pick for Alex Smith.

Funny. I felt the Browns dodged a bullet by not giving up a 2nd and a 3rd for him... Agreed. Hopefully he's unrestricted and we can pick him up. He's one of my vet options. I just don't see a lot of these guys going anywhere. Washington has no backup plan in place for Cousins. I bet he stays there another year. The Bills have no backup plan for Tyrod Taylor either. I bet he stays there too. So it's looking like McCaron, Bridgewater, Sam Bradford, and possibly Alex Smith. I don't think it'll take a two to get Smith though. Chiefs will want to unload that contract. I just don't know if it'll be us or who to get Smith. Smith isn't that old though. He'll be 34 this playing year. I think people forget that he left college (graduated) at 21 years old

Does Nick Foles enter the equation with a $7.6M cap hit? Or do they suck it up to keep him behind Wentz. Will he ask to be traded?

As a bridge gap QB, not being able to beat out Andy Dalton isn't that bad. I mean, in all fairness, what's Dalton's record verses us? The guy has been pretty successful since he entered the league in like 2011. He certainly is better than any QB we've had since coming back. Dalton surely isn't elite. I'm not sure if I'd even call him good. But he's been the starting QB of a team that's competed in the AFC North and been much better than we've been in a long long long long time

Very big insight that. Dalton had some stink this season. We need a vet. I like Rosen over Darnold, with a vet like this to start.
This is an idiot's game that leads to lunacy, but I have been trying to work through the "perfect season" lately. How many games might we have been in and won if Kizer had not taken sacks, been strip sacked, fumbled, missed open receivers, or held it too long to throw it short? Iam thinking if we get a vet to dodge , say half of those, we have multiple wins. Just horrible, though not just him alone. A vet might help quite a bit, on and off the field.

I saw an interview with him before the Eagles/Falcons game where he said he was about to retire until the Eagles asked him to return as Wentz' backup. Something tells me he's done when his current gig is over.

Interesting point. I wonder if he gets the itch to start somewhere now that he's had some success in Philly.

I was thinking about this last night. McCarron didn't look bad coming out of college and was on a lot of radars. He is already familiar with Hue's offense so he would be plug and play basically. He won't cost near as much as Cousins, Smith, or most other vets and he has enough time under his belt to not be overwhelmed.
I think picking him up as an unrestricted FA this offseason would be a good move. Between him, Kizer, and a draft pick we might find a QB. I think Kizer might develop given time. I think McCarron might be as ready as Garoppolo. And we could take one of the many QBs in this draft at an appropriate slot or not at all depending on Hue/Dorsey thoughts.
I think there are quite a few good 'prospect' QBs in this draft but they will all need time.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Funny. I felt the Browns dodged a bullet by not giving up a 2nd and a 3rd for him... I'm scared he's going to be a free agent and Jackson will snatch him up as the future. We're sitting here talking about Smith/Cousins, the #1 overall pick and a developed Kizer to dual it out. In reality, I fear it'll be more like: McCarron, Bradford, Hogan. The stuff of nightmares, really.

For the people wanting McCarron, why not just save the money and start Kessler? They are same QB. I have seen McCarron play and nothing he has done suggests to me that he could do a better job then Kessler.

McCarron could be a better version of Kessler. Hue thought it was worth the risk. And McCarron has more experienced and hasn't lost his confidence yet...

I believe AJ McCarron is a much better QB than people think and I am hopeful that he becomes an UFA and the Browns sign him. Would be the perfect bridge QB for Darnold.

I don't know how dead set Hue is to get McCarron in here. At the time of the attempted trade McCarron was Hue's best option to bring into the middle of the season to try to win some games. I think the reality of that made it seem as though Hue has high hopes for AJ.
Reasons McCarron was the best option at the time. Hue has a history him. They have a good relationship that does't require either one to learn the other's methods and personality. AJ already knows Hue's offense and verbage. McCarron is a bit more accurate than Kizer (who isn't) and is not as likely to panic in the red zone which has been Kizer's cause for great distress and annoyance.
In the middle of the season, desperate for some wins and needing a quick-fix which required a different QB McCarron fit the bill.
Starting a new season which will likely begin with a veteran QB and a 1st overall QB pick, I'm sure there are better options for a veteran QB than McCarron.
With a new veteran QB McCarron would have immediately become the back-up with the draft pick as the 3rd QB.

I think that the only QB from this year's team to be on next tear's team, will be Kizer. Kessler and Hogan will both be gone. (IMHO, of course)

I'll be a little bummed to see Hogan go, to be honest. But if he's gotta go to make room for a Smith or Cousins AND a Rosen/Darnold/Mayfield/Allen, then I'll pack his bags for him.
Kessler is gone.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
