Nice reply, but I was just talking about how I like to research players. I wasn't trying to debate the two qbs in that particular post.
I get why people like Darnold. I won't try and change their minds. I usually only speak up when people put up false information. I've been reading others and thinking about who I want for awhile. I wanted to express it, and this thread is the right place. I just did it in response to you because you're the leading "Rosen" voice.

IDK, the more I watch Darnold, the more I see another Blake Bortles. And I could very well be wrong about that, I just have a hard time looking past that long delivery. I know it’s not overly long but neither was Bortles. Just gives defenders that extra slit second.

Yikes. All Darnold and Bortles have in common is the wind up. Darnold is far more accurate down the field. He was also more accurate in his ball placement. He reads defenses at a more NFL ready level than Bortles did in college too.
Go back and watch Darnold against Ohio State. Watch his ball placement. Especially while having to move IN the pocket. His accuracy on the move was also on display. There’s a particular play. A throw to the sideline that he threw low and outside, basically out of bounds, but still catchable ONLY by his WR. The DB has no chance of making a play. That kind of placement goes beyond just accuracy. Bortles was not this good in college. If you watch the entire game you can see him on the sidelines. He’s very level headed. You can see frustration that things aren’t going the team’s way, but you can see that it doesn’t make him dwell when he makes a mistake. He goes back out and throws for over 300 yards in the face of an overwhelming pass rush. He’s a leader. I love Rosen’s skills. But if there’s any question in the FO about his attitude, or medical concerns, I’m all in on Darnold.

He is big, strong, accurate, makes plays when play breaks down, leader, throws a great ball. I just cannot decide who I like better between him and Rosen. I see Rosen as a less sturdy Eli Manning. He has good size, commands the offense, reads defenses, accurate, throws a great ball. I will be extremely happy with either of these 2 QB's. I do not think any other QB's in this class are on these two's level.

Looking at when I started this thread on 11/19 my views have not changed.
Since then I have gone back and watched additional tape that confirms my original take.
Darnold would have a 70% completion rate if half the drops were caught. He puts the ball right there most of the time.
Rosen has that classic form but the results don't vary much between them. I like both a lot.
But in the end I prefer Darnold. My concerns with Rosen center around concussion and injury. I think long term Darnold is the better fit for the Browns.

I'm LOCKED on Darnold also. Love his game. I'm not willing to risk the Concussion thing with Rosen. It's as simple as that. Aaron Rodgers likes BOTH these guys. He watches Cal football, so he's seen them play. He's talked to both. He's reached out to them and has offered help with any questions they may have. He was particularly impressed with what Darnold did in the Rose Bowl Game. That wind up is nothing to me. He's got an incredibly quick release even with it. Get Darnold in here with Chase Daniels and get Landry. Minkah-Fitzpatrick and a Johnson, Guice or Ronny Jones II and go to work with Haley.

I am going to be surprised if White stays on the Board very long .. In fact I have been saying for some time that there is going to be one crazy run on QB's in this Draft !

Darnold is growing on me more and more.. That's because you're talking yourself into him because you think he's going to be the pick. It happens to every year. Last year it was easy.

There are 3 solid first round QBs. Rosen who is not a perfect pick without risk but very polished. Darnold who if somebody told you last year we had a shot at taking him it would be a dream come true. I don't believe in that much changed. Mayfield who there are a few who just don't like him, I think it is because they have mentally labeled him as a Manziel clone or a punk...but fact is he is an over achieving QB that is better than a Cousins. Very accurate, his height has issues to justify him being picked in the top 5.
The guy I don't know is Allen...I see conflicting reports about him being the most talented and I also read he is inaccurate. I am one that believes in there is more natural ability in accuracy then people give credit to. Yes, it can be improved upon with technique tweaking. But for the most part if you cannot throw 60% in college now a days it is hard to be deemed as Accurate.
We cannot make the investment in a QB that is not accurate. If that is the case we got Kizer for that. We don't need another.
I'm so wishy washy on this QB thing because quite frankly I would be very satisfied with the 3 mentioned and I trust the personnel people we just put together to get this decision right.
Darnold is the QB I'm leaning to now as I think he has the brightest upside with a year under his belt. But we are talking what? 90 Days still before the draft, I'm sure I'll bounce around on who is the best for us more than once from now till then.
I think its just a win win situation that we are in. Finally right time and place for us to get our Franchise QB and the fortitude to build a team around him and not waste the pick like the Colts did on Luck.

In the end analysis we have to trust the assembled group of professionals to get this right.
This the first time in memory that we have a group of evaluators with the type of credentials these guys have.
There is a ton of work ahead for them. Free agency and seven rounds of the draft.
I agree with you Tab on the quarterbacks. I see how all the different opinions on these guys is there.
A case can be made for three or even four guys.
When it is all said and done I am for Darnold. But we shall see who these guys come up with??

I think there could posibly be 5 selected in the first round, Rosen, Darnold, Allen, Jackson, and Mayfield.
I can’t jump on the Darnold band wagon just yet, he does a lot that I like, I just can’t get over the release. I like my QBs to have a good quick release. I know there have been times when it’s improved for some once they get to the NFL but I’ve seen where muscle memory takes over and they revert back also.

Everything I read about Darnold makes me want him to be "the pick". The leadership, the accuracy, the desire to be better. He just sounds like the guy I want to be the face of a franchise. Then I turn on the video and watch him play, and he looks like a soccer goalie flinging outlet passes. He just doesn't "look" like an NFL QB with the way he throws the ball. Maybe I'll just stop watching video highlights of him and listen to Browns games on the radio. If he can keep up what he's doing in print, then I'll be happy with him!

I would be happy with Rosen or Darnold but I will support any QB our FO picks. Bottom line, they know more than I do about drafting QB's. Allen to me is another DK, big, strong armed, smart, but inaccurate. I don't think I would take him.

I really like Darnold. I think it'll take him a complete NFL season to learn enough to flip the switch. I think he'll probably have the best sophomore season in the NFL. I think Rosen is still the best prospect and will have the best career as a passer, but I wouldn't be surprised if Darnold was neck and neck with him.

I know there have been times when it’s improved for some once they get to the NFL but I’ve seen where muscle memory takes over and they revert back also. I'm not sure how much this matters, but wasn't Darnold converted to QB in HS, was formerly a LB? If he has only been QBing for 4 years or so, how ingrained is his muscle memory? He's working with Jordan Palmer, and I would bet his release is the one of, if not the primary, things he's working on. If allowed (forced) to sit for a year, and work on his mechanics there is a possibility he can reprogram his muscle memory. Even with the funky release, he is an accurate thrower who can make all the throws, and while not as refined as Rosen, reads the defense and makes good throws even from awkward platforms. Darnold, to me, has the highest ceiling in this group. I think Rosen and Mayfield are more ready, but Darnold has some special innate qualities which, if he can clean up his mechanics, could make him a stud QB.

I take exception to this entire "floor/ceiling" reference. I'm not actually speaking about you per say but it's a commonly used theme. In actuality nobody can predict how much or how little a player will progress once they're drafted. Some players actually develop and some simply don't. Often with no real rhyme or reason to it and it's almost impossible to predict.
The closest you can actually come to it is to look at a players weaknesses and which are the most difficult to overcome. With QB's it's usaully accuracy and post snap reads.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I get what you are saying, but the job of GMs and talent evaluators is to project how players will progress. Nobody coming into the league is a finished product. Some are more advanced than others. There are skills that can be taught, and abilities that can't. If a player is deficient in teachable skills but displays unteachable abilities, they are capable of being better than than someone who lacks those abilities. You are correct, there is no guarantee that he will improve those skills and reach that potential. But it is still the job of GMs and their staffs to factor in all the variables and determine (as best they can) what the potential of each player is, and the chance they will reach that potential.

I agree with you to an extent. To carry your point even further, it would seem logical to me to think that which ever athlete has used his skills to be the best at his position at the time of the draft has proven he has been the quickest to develop his talents to that point in his career. To me that indicates which one is most teachable and has the highest ceiling.
To me it makes no sense to feel someone who hasn't progressed the most to that point will suddenly change that. With the best talent and being the best student of the game will make you the best at your position on draft day.
I'm pretty much a Rosen guy but if not, Darnold looks to be the next best candidate in this draft class.

Kind of interesting.
http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/media-cen...9e-8c4068a0978c
The key here is growth.
Many many times I have stated these prospects are not finished products.
They are in the learning process.
You have to project where they will be in year two, three and over their careers.
When I watch Darnold I see plenty of things I like right now. But what is exciting to me is this young man wants it. He wants to learn. He takes to coaching. He will get the best coaching he has ever been exposed too.
To me he is what you look for under the term of franchise quarterback.

Actually its probably the only way that your guy Mason Rudolf will have a possibility of making it to our roster at #33 or #35.
If we do not sign Cousins and do so with another that might be a 3 year contract or trade (not too much) and get ourselves what is spoken of as a Bridge QB we can still teach the QB pick and hold off on his era. Probably most likely somebody who was on the Viking roster last year.

JMHO, like Darnold over Rosen because- physical traits/no concussion problems (HUGE), family background (played lots of sports and EXCELLED in all), both parents teachers/ instilled good traits/work habits AND known as flatliner or something close- he stays level headed- Rosen has to much Manziel in him for me- party animal/political/rich family etc.....Darnold is REAL young- like Kizer.....hope we pick up a good place holder and use most of first year as learning experience....GO Browns!!!

Just going to clear up some misconceptions. Josh Rosen was a nationally ranked Jr. tennis player who was sponsored. Rosen's father is a surgeon and Rosen is known to be very dedicated to his craft. Rosen's family is richer than Manziel's. Rosen is 4 months older than Darnold.

Thanks for the rundown. I didn't know Poppa Rosen's background. Could give some insight into Rosen Jrs habits as a QB (or it doesn't).
I kinda question the whole narrative on Rosen's attitude being a detriment to him as an NFL QB. I mean, he's a college student, and a successful athlete on top of that. Saying or doing stupid things (especially when it really doesn't hurt anyone) really shouldn't be newsworthy. I think the concussions are a far more worrisome thing.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

jmho Cousins is the only decent FA QB. He is the only legitimate/bonafide starter candidate out there. I think he is the only QB you would sign and say this is our guy and our search is over. There are no free agent qbs from the vikings that anyone really wants or that would be much of an upgrade over darnold, rosen, or mason. Some might argue for Case but why then wouldn't they resign him themselves. Foles could be a legitimate starter but he is technically not a FA this season. Brees will of course resign with the saints. I just don't see many veteran FA QBs that are all that great being available atm. With that in mind any QB we draft at #1 will most likely be our starter on day 1.

If we draft Darnold, we need a veteran to give competent play til Sam is ready. It would be a bonus to get more than that, but I don't expect us to sign an established starter. Chase Daniels (or similar) seems about what we should expect.

This is about where I'm at now. Darnold and someone who can hold down the fort 10 games to a full season. I still like Rosens play better at present but believe Sam could be a more fierce competitor/leader.

I'd love to have Keenum on a short deal, but I don't think he'd want to come here. I do love how he uses VR though. He needs to bring that approach to Cleveland. I wanted to make a thread about it, but I didn't want to challenge traditional views and freak out neo-luddites in one post. I try to keep those spheres separate!

When I tried to find it again, I came across this instead: http://sportsvts.com/sports-virtual-training-systems-press-announcement/ Sounds pretty wild.

I wanted to make a thread about it, but I didn't want to challenge traditional views and freak out neo-luddites in one post. I try to keep those spheres separate! Had a video of one of those VR QB simulation systems come across my twitter feed. Guy squealed when he saw the pass rush. When I tried to find it again, I came across this instead: http://sportsvts.com/sports-virtual-training-systems-press-announcement/ Sounds pretty wild. http://www.espn.com/blog/minnesota-vikin...se-keenums-gameESPN ran an article about it during the super bowl.

If we draft Darnold, we need a veteran to give competent play til Sam is ready. It would be a bonus to get more than that, but I don't expect us to sign an established starter. Chase Daniels (or similar) seems about what we should expect. I'd roll with Kizer again if this was our only option.

The only QB ready to play once drafted is Rosen, and he WILL struggle when he does. All the other QBs need time to work on some things. Darnold in my opinion needs to sit at least a year. To work on his mechanics, think Aaron Rogers. He needed the same. And got it. For Darnold to be his very best I think he needs the same.
I do have to mention this about Darnold, while I give the edge to Allen being able to throw on the run(best I’ve ever seen imo), the ability to throw off different platforms while still being accurate is what Darnold does extremely well, off balance throws seem very easy for him.

I was thinking about that after I posted; is a career backup really better than Kizer? If Kizer can make strides in reducing turnovers, he could be the bridge.
