The Ohio State men are off to a 2-0 start after facing a couple small schools (Robert Morris & Radford).

Things heat-up the next two weeks for the Buckeyes when they face Gonzaga and Clemson.

I can’t wait to see the team OSU coach Chris Holtmann fields on these ESPN games.

Remember, Holtmann was very successful at Butler with a much smaller student body.

Perhaps this is a new era Buckeye Men’s basketball.

Well the Buckeye men are pounding Butler right now 54-40 with < 4 minutes left.

But more importantly, they have 3 big games in the next 8 days:

The Ohio State men’s basketball program’s last national championship was 1960.

And they’ve only finished 2nd three times: 1961, 1962 & 2007

Those early 1960s teams were lead by olympic gold medalist and NBA HOF Jerry Lucas. Who also got his bachelor’s degree unlike virtually every NBA & NFL player today.

Is there anyone in the NBA with a college degree? Or the NFL?

(OK Ben Roethlisberger went back during the off-season and finished his degree. Kudos)

Anyway, why so little success for Ohio State B-Ball (vs. football)?

My theory is there’s a combo of reasons:

There’s a lot more top-tier college basketball programs. Smaller colleges can more readily afford a basketball program. There’s over 350 Division I men’s basketball teams. Barely over 100 Division I football (FBS).

For instance, with basketball, there’s less equipment, no outdoor stadium, smaller teams (fewer players on team), they can comfortably practice every day year round, individuals can easily hone their game skills by themselves or in pairs (one-on-one).

Also, I’m not sure how relevant it is, but pro football originated in the mid-west (arguably Pittsburgh). Basketball was founded several years later in Springfield, Mass.

Butler won in OT 67-66.

I think I see why no one's too interested.

How do you blow a 14 point lead in under 4 minutes?

I'm excited for hoops.. not necessarily Buckeye hoops... Terps lost to Syracuse last night by 2 on the road. I think the Terps will be decent this season, right now they need to stop turning the ball over.. over 20 turnovers in 3 of their games, twice they got away with it because the opponent was just inferior.. last night in cost them. In the final minute of a 2 point game they had 2 possessions in a row where they didn't get a shot off... hard to win that way.

Ohio State has been playing very well, but has anyone been keeping an eye on Marvin Bagley III and Trae Young? What a year for the Cavs to potentially have the 1st pick in the NBA draft. The Real Madrid dude looks very good too.

PastorMarc, was this an act of God? Just saying watching this was bordering on a religious experience (although we didn't start watching until the second half).

What struck me was the #1 ranking for the Sparties, same undefeated record for league play.
They are first in the nation and me Buckeyes are unranked. Pretty consequential to me. We have already earned some love with a few ranked teams losing twice in a weekend!

Buckeyes get shown some love and a respectable ranking after this, I hope.

What a surprise.

I think you have to attribute the Buckeyes' unexpected success to Coach Holtmann.

Here's a headline from Sports Illustrated online (June 2017):

Quote:
With Chris Holtmann hire, Ohio State nabs a rising-star coach who knows how to connect

This looks really good for Buckeye fans. This could add a lot of pizzazz to February & March.

Or . . . .
This season's success is also the Lack of Matta, perhaps? They have more fire and play some mannish D. And they shooy like the Cavs should, but won't. Some big wins so far. I am waiting for March Madness.

I am delighted, surprised, and interested in Buckeye roundball again!

Coach has them playing harder, playing better D, and it looks good to me. Hats off to any and all responsible, coaches and players! Roll on!

From BUCKNUTS online April 5, 2017 (right after last year's NCAA tourney):

Quote:
On Wednesday, sports book Bovada released its first odds for the 2017-18 men's basketball championship. At the top are the bluebloods in Kentucky (9/1), defending national champion North Carolina (12/1) and Duke, this year's runner-up Gonzaga, Kansas, Louisville and Villanova (all 14/1).

Ohio State fans will have to scroll a long way down to find the Buckeyes, who's odds are 150/1, behind nine other Big Ten programs and in-state schools Xavier (66/1) and Cincinnati (250/1).

Michigan and Michigan State are the Big Ten teams with the best odds (20/1) with Indiana (22/1) right behind the two programs.

Ohio State was listed above at 150-to-1. Would have been a great $20 bet then.

You won't get 150-to-1 anymore.

Currently VegasInsider.com has the Buckeye men at 66-to-1. (to win the National Championship)

I think still a really good bet today. (I suspect the odds will fall a little more. Maybe 40-to-1)

If the Buckeyes pull-off a miracle Big 10 Championship, I bet the odds drop to ~ 20-1. Maybe 15-1.

Umm....

Did you see the polls this morning?

13. Ohio State... Baby.. Both Coaches and AP Poll!!!

So I'm looking for Ohio State this morning ranked around 20-25. Don't see 'em. I'm thinkin':

"Damn, how could they fall out the top-25?"

Last predictions I saw had Ohio State as a #5 seed in the NCAA tourney.

That'll move up a tad.

Nice front court.

I was surprised to see us working to a top 10 with more success and league title potential.

Pardon me, PastorMarc, but I see it as almost an act of God's blessing, smiling on Buckeye B-ball once again.
