No one is arguing Vers. You don't like the hire because for whatever reason you think your boy Rosen may not be chosen. You stated as such a few days ago. With all the talent scouts and football resumes now in our FO if they deem Rosen is not the guy then...he isn't the guy. If he is, then he is.

But, until then....I like the Haley hire and think it can be very good for us and I especially like that he knows how to beat our divisional opponents. Show me an OC who is available who has a resume like Haley's.

I just said that I was not interested in arguing. I was relaying an interview from a former player who was on a team that Haley coached on. I don't see how that is such a grievous offense considering all of the crap that people are making up on this board that goes unchallenged.

So will Kizer have to learn a new O? If so that pretty much spells doom for his careeer. Poor guy never had a chance. Then people wonder why players would rather sit out than play for us lol

I believe you got a good OC. He can be hard to get along with, but knows what he is doing. I think the Steelers are going to regret this. I think that Keith Butler should have been let go, not Haley.

Todd Haley was responsible for Ben not free-lancing as much, as a result Ben got sacked far fewer times these few seasons.

Good points, mom.

But, I also think Ben's injuries had a lot to do w/him not free lancing as much, as well.

But, to be clear......I agree that TH wanted Ben to reign it in a bit.

If I remember right, when Haley got hired by Pittsburgh, it was emphasized that a big part of his job was to keep Big Ben upright.

Big Ben was the offense when Haley got hired. Bell and Brown came later.

I think Brown was there, but I might be wrong. I think Mike Wallace was the other guy when he took over.

I think you are right about Bell, for sure.

And I agree w/both you and mom that Haley wanted to keep Ben from being injured and he reigned him in.

You might be right, I was thinking that Randal El and Sanders were the main WR's but that may have been earlier.

I'm hearing locally that it was Tomlin that pushed for Ben to not sneak thee ball. Haley had orders to protect him.

Antonio Brown was part of the 2010 draft, On June 15, 2010, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Brown to a three-year, $1.28 million contract with a signing bonus of $73,075. Wow - he was a bargain then. Not too shabby for a 6th round pick!

I like the hire, a lot.

Prediction: Dorsey signs Alex Smith in FA. Then he signs one of the better WRs from FA. In the draft he picks one of the premier RBs in the 2nd Rd.

Then the Hue haters will point out just how much better the offense is doing now that Hue is not calling the plays, proving once and for all that Hue's play calling was the problem.

Hahaha.

You could be right, but this is what I heard. Ben said in a PC that Haley wouldn't allow him to audible to a qb sneak. He also said that he suggested to Tomlin that he run a QB draw on one of those 4th down situations and that Tomlin laughed in his face.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that is what I have heard.

Hue's play calling was a major concern. I was wondering this myself, actually. If, under Haley, the offensive output improves, does it prove the concerns were valid for Hue's playcalling? One can never really know, I suppose, since the roster will be different. The scientific method would demand the roster be the same for a realistic comparison.

I'm not so sure he learned hues system.... having an OC helps Kizer... gives him another coach thwt is more devoted to the offense... doesn't matter the system... he needs mentorship...

Great hire...

I disagree. I think a bunch of dummies question play calling when plays don't work. They try to pretend they understand play calling more so than guys who are highly proclaimed and paid to do so.

I get questioning a play call or three, but overall, nah! It's just Joe Q Public pretending to be smart and whining about something they don't really understand.

Do you know what the call was? How do you know it was execution? You don't know anymore than the people claiming it was poor play calling. Come down off the high horse acting like you know so much more than others. I'm sure it was a combination of poor execution and poor play calling. You don't go 1-31 any other way.

With the hiring of Haley, I want Barkley at 4. I've wanted Fitzpatrick the whole time, but Barkley can be Bell, and Haley knows how to scheme with that type of back.

Folks,
You do know some of the same complaints people here have about Hue were the SAME COMPLAINTS Steeler fans have about Haley?? Haley throws the ball first and runs second. And BTW - the coordinator before Haley was the coach I like, Bruce Arians, who was canned for not running the ball much!!

I'm pretty much positive that Haley was let go for one reason. He and Roethlisberger's relationship deteriorated to the point where they could no longer work together. In fact, early during this season, they had to bring the QB coach (their new OC) down to the sideline to be an intermediary between Ben and Haley during games because they refused to interact. They both handled it professionally in the media. Well another possible reason for Haley's release may have also been that he has a smoking hot wife and the two of them have a penchant for frequenting local bars and making a spectacle of themselves at times. In fact they got into a drunken bar fight a few weeks ago in which Haley got his hip broken.

I am pretty sure that with all Ben's retirement talk he went to the Rooney's and said, "Look, I promise I will play a few more years if you get rid of Todd". Because after saying all season long that he may retire after the season, he all of a sudden leaked a statement saying he wanted to play 3 more years. Then the very next day the team announced that Haley was let go and Ben's favorite coach was the new OC. Don't think it was a coincidence.

Haley took a lot of grief as a play caller but I doin't think he was bad at it. He does love, love, love bubble screens which result in lost yardage much of the time, but they do work now and then. I think all OC's make questionable calls every week. I think he will improve the Browns offense.

So, to address the OP, I'm hoping Haley will be adaptive to whomever we pick up in FA and the draft. Just going by the offense he ran in Pitt, it would be a great fit for S. Barkley, but, it needs to be filtered through the QB. I don't know if Smith has the big arm for running Hue's deeper patterns, but I'm sure he would excell in an RPO such as we saw Philly running Sunday.

LeVeon Bell led the NFL in carries by 30+ carries at 321. Crowell had 207.

So, I think that perhaps we should not focus on whether the coaches get along or not, but instead on Haley's relationship w/a very young and insecure roster.

From HOFer Kurt Warner...

Warner, now an analyst for the NFL Network, described working with Haley.

“Todd is a guy that will push you and get in your face and is not afraid to challenge even the best players in the league if he thinks he can make them better,” Warner added. “And I appreciated that. I understand why a lot of people look at that and kind of keep him at arm’s length, like, ‘Oh, man. I don’t know if I want those kind of outbursts or a guy with that kind of demeanor on my sideline.’

Warner continued to take up for his old coach,

“If you’re a competitor and you want to win, whether you’re an organization, a head coach or a player, you want a guy like that in your corner. You want a guy like that in your corner. You want a guy like that pushing you every day and taking you to the next level.”

I like the hire. It's cool if you don't. Not every coach is player's coach. Hue certainly saw something in Haley that he though would help the team.

Todd Haley talks offensive philosophy, game planning and play-calling

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steel...es/201708060163

The Steelers ran the ball better than any other team in the NFL in the second half of the 2016 season. Le’Veon Bell rushed for an average of 146 yards per game as the Steelers won nine consecutive games before falling to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship.

That sounds like something offensive coordinator Todd Haley would want to emphasize for a full 16-game season, assuming Bell reports and signs his franchise tag. Especially when you consider the Steelers had a 50-50 pass-run ratio in that nine-game winning streak and nearly passed twice as much as they ran when they opened the season with four wins and five losses.

But it’s not that simple for Haley. He has a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger, a three-time All-Pro receiver in Antonio Brown and game-breaker in Martavis Bryant, if the NFL ever clears him to play.

That’s offensive weaponry coaches dream about without the mention of rookie second-round pick JuJu Smith-Schuster, veteran slot receiver Eli Rogers and others who figure to be contributors.

It also would go against his offensive philosophy.

“We’re a game plan team,” Haley said. “Whoever the opponent is we’re going do what gives us the best chance to score points and score more points. When you look back at last season it’s easy to say we threw it too much here or there. At the same time, we’re going to go into games with an attack plan. Sometimes it might be running a lot and sometimes it might be throwing a lot.”

Haley learned his offensive philosophy from Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells, who plucked him from the New York Jets scouting department and hired him as his receivers coach in 1997. Haley later worked for Parcells again in Dallas, and his approach to offensive football continues to have influence on his coaching.

“That’s who I learned from, and it really stuck with me — no square pegs in round holes,” he said. “I’ve said it a million times. It’s what our guys do and what gives us a best chance to win. Whatever that is, we’re going to try to do it and not waste a lot of time with things we’re not in love with. We have a scaled-down playbook. Some guys have a million plays. We try to hone in on what we really love our guys doing and what we think gives us a chance to succeed.”

One reason the Steelers had such a lopsided pass-run ratio early last season was the absence of Bell for the first three games when he served a drug suspension. And when the Steelers lost four consecutive games after starting 4-1 they were forced to abandon the run early because they were falling behind in games.

Assuming Bell is in the lineup Week 1 the Steelers shouldn’t have the offensive imbalance that plagued them in the first half of last season. They passed the ball an average of 40 times per game in the first nine games and ran it just 22 times per game. During the nine-game winning streak they threw it and ran it the same amount — 31 times per game.

“I just think early on we were a little heavier pass than we wanted to be,” Haley said. “Things were going on, not that we didn’t have confidence in DeAngelo [Williams]. We started to balance out a little bit. We all know as the year goes on, especially as it gets a little colder, that has to be something that’s a big edge for us. Le’Veon continued to get better. He got in a real groove and was able to stay healthy and be in there a bunch. And he doesn’t want to come out. It’s very easy to call when you’re making the kind of progress we were.”

Todd Haley brings instant credibility with offensive coordinator hire

http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland-brown...oordinator-hire

Todd Haley?

Sign me up.

There’s zero reason to complain about his hire as the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator. Haley brings credibility and accomplishment with him from Pittburgh.

This move strengthens the coaching staff and allows Hue Jackson to focus on the big picture, especially with Haley expected to take over play-calling. Haley has been successful in Arizona with Kurt Warner, in Kansas City (for one season at least) with Matt Cassel, and in Pittsburgh with Ben Roethlisberger.

He is a straight-shooting, in-your-face guy who is not afraid to challenge players (look out Corey Coleman), and he will hold everyone accountable on the offense -- including the receivers and backs.

To say that Haley had an easy job in Pittsburgh given the talent he had on offense does oversimplify things a tad. Haley had to juggle the desires of Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell and Martavis Bryant, all of whom wanted the ball, along with the desires of Ben Roethlisberger to run the offense.

That is not an insignificant amount of ego to juggle.

The results speak for themselves.

During Haley's tenure, the Steelers were third in the league in yards per play, and in the last four seasons were second in scoring behind New England. In his six seasons, Pittsburgh’s offense ranked third, seventh, third, second, 20th and 21st.

The Steelers did not retain Haley after the offense scored 42 points in a playoff loss to Jacksonville. Haley’s blunt and hard-charging manner can rub some the wrong way, and in this era in the NFL the quarterback is paramount. So Roethlisberger’s quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner was promoted to coordinator.

Haley also will run the ball. Even with Roethlisberger and Brown, the Steelers ran the ball 40 percent of the time in 2017 and 41 percent in 2016.

One other thought on the hire: It shows something about the way Jackson views his job.

One year ago he hired one of the more forceful defensive coaches in the league in Gregg Williams. This offseason the Browns barely hesitated when Haley became available.

Jackson and GM John Dorsey were clearly not going to hire a coordinator without some chops. The Browns pursued Mike Mularkey (briefly) and Ben McAdoo, both of whom had experience as a coordinator and coach. They also interviewed Sean Ryan, but did not offer the Texans quarterback coach the job.

Hiring Haley shows a level of security on Jackson’s part — even as he comes off 0-16 and 1-31. A coach who is insecure is not going to bring coordinators on his staff who have resumes to replace him.

The Browns and Jackson seem to realize that their coach needs to be the coach, and that they need a strong coordinator to handle the offense.

They have that now in Haley.

Now it’s time to start adding the players.

The no qb sneak audible order comes from Tomlin not Haley.

It's like I stated.

This coaching staff now is made up of coaches that have a record around the league as guys who make players better.

Not everyone has to like you. That is not the job.
Parcells intimidated players.

Coaching is about getting the most from players.

The Browns now have real pros in the Dorsey group and the coaching staff.

Now just get some players.
