selling a 1-31 record to one of the top QBs in the NFL with just a few years left It's not about selling 1-31. He was traded. While he was traded, he can say he would not talk about an extension and that ends the discussion right there. I fully understand that.

1. What is substantial? 2. If we did make a "substantial" offer for a one year starter, then I would be very worried about the people running the team. 3. I don't think a "substantial" offer was made. I'm also kinda worried what Smith off the list means for how we'll handle veteran QB situations in the near future. Are we going to overpay even more because that's how desperate we are? It seems like many want to win now as opposed to building for the long term.

It seems like many want to win now as opposed to building for the long term. I'm concerned that this will be a Jimmy Haslem focus after 1-31 in two seasons-- Overpay for players in FA or trade picks for players. This would get the fan base back at the expense of building via draft picks and home-grown contract extensions of worthwhile players (possibly). I'm guessing Jimmy wants to get the buyers (fans) back ASAP. Spending in FA and creating buzz will help do that. Surely, John Dorsey will have a major say in this too but I'm not aware of his approach to FA in Kansas City. Hopefully it isn't going crazy in FA and trading picks.

I think our only real option will be to win some now. Cousins made it plain he wanted to go somewhere he felt he could win now. Given the choices he'll have that won't be here.
I think we can sign someone that will give us some wins but not anything great and certainly not the long term answer. We'll do things like the vast majority of NFL teams do to find the long term answer at the QB position. The draft.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

j/c: Pat McManamon of ESPN reports that the Browns offered one of their second-round to the Chiefs for QB Alex Smith. However, the Browns weren’t willing to pay to Smith the four-year, $94 million contract he got from the Redskins.
McManamon says that the Browns are expected to use one of their two first-round picks on a quarterback.
Mary Kay Cabot first reported that the Browns tried to trade for Smith too before Kansas City agreed to send him to the Redskins for a 2018 third-round pick and CB Kendall Fuller. http://nfltraderumors.co/browns-offered-2nd-rd-pick-alex-smith-werent-willing-pay-much-redskins/

Benjamin Allbright on Cleveland Browns Daily right now and said the Browns offered (2) 2nd round picks to KC for Smith. However, Browns did not want to commit a big, long-term deal to Alex Smith (presumably because they are drafting a QB to eventually take over as starter).
He also stated KC allowed Smith to have some say in which team he went to.

I still don't know if I believe this, but if true, a second round pick for a QB that will only start for one year? Is anyone else worried about that?

This is what I've been trying to tell y'all. These vets do NOT want to come here.
We must build through the draft.

We don't know what kind of deal they were offering Smith.. may have only been a two year deal and Smith wanted more.

Also.... on @Browns_Daily just now @AllbrightNFL said he expects the Browns to take Sam Darnold with the #1 pick Bummer. A lot can happen between now and then. I hope he's just saying that because he really wants Mayfield in Denver to be a thing... And...Darnold isn't ready to start, which means we're still looking for a vet. Who?

Ben gets all of his Browns info from Wylie. Washington traded more than what I thought Smith would bring in a trade. They paid him less money per year than I thought though. The guaranteed money is huge in this contract though and I'll bet that is the part of the contract that the Browns didn't want to match. I think they still want to draft a QB #1 and might be afraid of all of that guaranteed money for Smith.

It was the Contract demand. Excellent PULL OUT Dorsey. Gawd, Snyder is the worst owner in Sports. It's Darnold or Rosen. Get used to it, folks!!!!! We're on our way.

I don't have a problem with the 2nd rounder. Maybe even add a 3rd for Smith. The money and years was the killer. Its not like we would actually use those couple of picks on studs anyway.. U guys kill me with the draft picks sometimes.. all we need is a decent QB and have WASTED so many 1st and 2nd round picks for scrubs that could have been, or could be used to get a fairly known talent. I'd have given our Number 1 overall and a 2nd and maybe a 3rd for Jimmy G. GET A QB ALLREADY !!

I don't think he's going to JUST the highest bidder. I don't understand your fascination with removing all context from posts.
I've said repeatedly that I like the Browns best in terms of ability. All-star front office, freshly added OC who is highly respected, high level of cap space, high level of draft selections and the roster is already bright on the defensive front seven, offensive line and Gordon/Njoku/Johnson.
I don't see that as a bare cupboard. There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the future of this team.
Any quarterback the Browns roll with (Including a #1 overall rookie) is coming to a great situation in which their talents can be built around.
Alex Smith is off to an average team in the NFL's young-gun division (Including one team about to play in the Superbowl). Didn't want him, but I think he's foolish for wanting Washington. Are they really that much more ready to compete for a Superbowl?
Denver was 5-11 and need to overturn half their elderly roster. Are they really that much more ready to compete for Superbowl?
The Jags can give a quarterback a run, but they're seen as a pretty low percentage chance of acquiring a top end FA QB.

No sane and established QB would ever choose to play for a mediocre Head Coach like Hue, specially one with well known lack of integrity.

I think Dorsey is getting in troubles...
He was brought to get the QB, presumably Alex Smith, and he failed...
Now Hue has his excuse to be 1-46..
Soon we will read a post from a close source that Alex Smith was the guy that Hue liked the most...

That's ridiculous, to say Dorsey is a failure when he didn't get Smith. You sir, are losing it.

I agree. Just because Smith was mentioned and we made an offer doesn't mean that Dorsey was brought here to bring in "presumably Smith".
