We've talked a lot about next year's QB, but if you could only choose one qb to be our starting qb next year, who would it be?

We have read about Cousins, Kizer, Keenum, Bradford, McCown, Rosen, Darnold, Allen, Mayfield, Rudolph, L. Jackson, etc. But this is about who you want starting as the Brown's qb next year.

You can explain why you made that choice if you like. I'll start.

Josh Rosen. I hope the Browns draft him first overall and he wins the job during the camps. I think he is extremely accurate and I think he can read coverages post-snap. I think he goes through his progressions quickly. I think he moves well in the pocket and will also stand in the face of the rush. I think he is extremely intelligent. I think he is going to be a very good qb for a long time.

I am not asking anyone to agree w/me. Instead, I would prefer that you pick your qb and explain why you chose him.

I don't want a rookie to be the starter Week 1. Sure every rookie must take his lumps somehow but I'd rather have a rookie sit behind a bridge starter for a couple of years till he feels comfortable with the offense and the speed of the NFL in general.

We would need a OC who can take the rookie's talents and cater an offense to fit those talents.

Then and only then will he be ready to start.

So give me a Vet. We can pay one and I think it's worth it to get the "win" ball rolling.

I'm not totally sold on Cousins so I'm going to go with Keenum. He's battle tested and he can probably adapt to any offense the OC can design. He's got some semblence of durability (unlike Bradford) so he might be able to take some hits. And he can mentor a young QB for the future. He's always been a backup so if he gets ursurped by a young QB (like he did in LA) it won't be a blow to his confidence. He can win right away and that's what we need. He may not lead us to the promised land but we wouldn't expect him to, given our record the past two years. If he gets us more than 3 wins, he's the savior.

I'd like to add that perhaps we can just list the qualities of our own choice rather than slinging mud at the choices of other posters. Let's keep it positive and w/out all the bickering.

I want Rosen , too and I've read a lot about him the last few weeks. I'm not an X and O guy or an expert at all, but he seems smart, I like his size and I love the way he throws the ball: accurate, with good timing & YAC-friendly.

Smith was my 1st choice but that ship sailed. Now my choice is Cousins. I think he would give us the best chance to turn things around quickly if we can also get him some weapons. I don't want to rely on a rookie. We need to hit the ground running next year. Can't wait on a rookie to develop. If we start off 0-4 or 1-5 it will get ugly. Could be facing another coaching change if that happens.

I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

I want a Vet to start and for us to draft the QB of the future.

I think counting on Rosen to start out of the gate is a bad idea. (especially if he gets hit in the head.)

There are about 7 Veteran QB's that I would want and one of those guys just went to Washington.

McCarron sucks. I don't want anything to do with him.

Kizer until the draftee is ready or he wins some games. I'd love for it to be Cousins, but I don't see him signing here. I sincerely hope McCarron doesn't end up on our squad.

On the top of the Vet list right now is Cousins. If we swing and miss on the rookie, we won't be crushed for it. We also won't be making a coaching change in week 5 because we went 0-5.

I want Cousins. He is proven. We know he can do what is required, make both the pre/post snap reads, make the throws, know the speed of the game, and can win. No more QB room with no wins.

McCown, praised as Pros/Pro- he's won here AND willing and able to teach...want Donald over Rosen due to concussions...McCown wouldn't cost as much and he'll play hard for Hue....Go Browns!!!

On January 31st I am still torn between Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold. I will be happy as long as one of those 2 are the #1 pick.

I just feel that these 2 QB's 20 years from now will be seen as the next Elway/Marino. We must get 1.

well for me was not on my list but when this same question was asked to Joe Thomas he stated Drew Brees.

Been thinking of that ever since.
That would be the best for the Browns and an instant competitor.

So he is my choice for obvious reasons.

Yeah, I forgot about Brees. Your guy doesn't have to be on the list. I was just saying that I've seen a lot of names out there.

I just kinda want a thread where we pimp our guy and not trash other guys.

To be honest, I think McCown is the only vet QB we are going to be able to entice to Cleveland, I think he likes Hue and will provide guidance to the draftee and Kizer.

I'm with you... I want to draft a qb within first five picks and also get a vet... let the vet start this year.... don't really care who the vet is,,,

I want to see a vet bridging to a rookie. First I want either Rosen or Darnold. My head says Rosen, my heart says Darnold. I won't be disappointed with either choice, I think they both will be excellent NFL QBs.

As for the vet, my first choice was Smith. I like the idea of Brees, but think he'd retire before signing here. I also don't think we are getting Cousins.

I think that realistically we are looking McGown, Taylor, or Keenum/Bradford/Bridgewater. Of those choices; Keenum, Taylor, or McGown (in that order.) I don't trust Bradford's health, and if Bridgewater is available, it's because he's permanently damaged.

A vet like Chase Daniel to start the season, and the QB of our choice with the # 1 Pick. My choice for that pick would be Rosen, but Dorsey might like someone else.

Tyrod's deep ball is suspect. Bradford wouldn't be a bad short term option.

There will be a lot of QB talk here until late April. wink

Jimmy G, why wouldn’t we offer him 5yr/150 mil? If you are gonna go big, why not go big. He is 26, he would be the FUTURE. Might surprise the Niners, they might think that nobody will offer him since he seemed content, happy, won them some games.

Why wouldn't they be able? If you don't think they won't franchise him if they don't get a deal done before the year begins, you're crazy.

It buys them time to exclusively negotiate

I thought there were rules to not allow a player that was acquired via a trade to not be franchised like in the NBA where the player that is acquired can’t be given a max deal. Heck I don’t know that’s why I was asking.

....ahem.... May I?

How about Baker Mayfield. With Chase Daniel backing him up. And I hope this is plan B if plan A was Alex Smith.

I usually don't get carried away with saying we gotta get this guy, but we gotta get this guy. Not really a fair comparison but this is Little Mac from Punch Out. The kid who is going to win against all odds.

Our situation is dire. We have 1 win in 2 years. We are the place everyone makes fun of and the place no one wants to come. We are the triple A to the major leagues, the d-league to the NBA, the IHL to the NHL. We are the Cleveland Browns. Just a stop players go before they go to a "real NFL team." Once proud but now look at us...

Here's a kid who was told in grade school he was never going to be a professional sports players. He's about to become a first round pick in the draft for the national football league. He's a two-time walk-on Heisman winner. He's been proving people wrong his entire life. He's not scared and he's not going to back down.

I draft him #1 and I tell him to go prove me right, and prove the thousands of doubters across the NFL wrong. Prove wrong the fans and coaches alike who said you were the next Johnny Manziel, who said you were too short, who said you didn't have the arm to play in the NFL, who said you shouldn't be a first round pick, and who said you couldn't lead a team to a Super Bowl. Prove them all wrong.

This is a kid who can do all the things you need him to do with the football and he's going to get his teammates to run through walls and go that extra step with you.

I've watched Mayfield plenty this year. He plays with passion, he plays with a chip on his shoulder. He's ultra competitive. He can hit his receivers in stride, he can pass the ball thru a tight window, and he can throw to a spot on the field. He knows how to play the game and how to play the position.

Is he too short?

Quote:
"I've never been able to see over the guys," Mayfield says, "I just trust where they're at and what I see in the defense. Nobody sees over the 6'8" left tackle. Even Josh Allen, Rosen, and Darnold can't see over that guy. You're seeing concepts, and understanding timing. If you see the guy open you're late. You have to anticipate it."

He can throw well from the pocket or on the run. He's great at extending plays. Heck, he can even catch.

"He looks like a fool out there." No one ever cared when Favre ran around like a kid. No one cares when Rivers trash talked opponents. In fact, no one really cares what you do as long as you win.

The days of being a second rate NFL squad are over. He's going to lead the heck out of us and he's not going to let anyone slack off. He does a lot of things well, but it's his leadership that's his most important quality. Players will gravitate towards him.

He's going to be a star.

But don't take my word for it...

Bruce Arians

flag planting trash talking td making genius

heisman winner

he wants to be a brown

he's not manziel - ndt scouting

This kid gets it. He understands. He's going to be great.

I don't know how we can pass on him. We shouldn't pass on him. I hope he's here come september.

MY Starter?

Sam da' Man Darnold.

ACCURACY. And he'll break a Defenses Back with that incredible Roethlisberger like Scrambling Ability while always keeping his eyes down field.

SIZE matters.

The Veteran does NOT need to Start. He needs to be that Mentor in the QB Room, on the Practice Field and On the Sidelines. I'm hip to Daniels.

Now. We're seeing the Browns are going HARD after Jarvis Landry. A Receiver who actually CATCHES everything he can TOUCH.

There's Haley's Antonio Brown.

With Gordon, Coleman, Njoku, Duke and Darnold, we've got the makings of a very good attack.

I'd add Simmie Cobb's and Darnolds USC RB with Explosive Break Away Speed and solid hands. Ronnie Jones II.

Let's see if Joe T can persuade Drew Brees haha

I would like us to draft Darnold too

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I want Cousins.

I like to know what I am getting. No matter what we think about a rook QB, there is near a 50% bust factor in all of them.

I also like the idea of using those first two first rounders on non QB's. I see this as the quickest way to being a good team.

Time for the winning to begin.

Someone not named Kizer, not named Kessler. Trust ME for a change. Veteran starter and we should not be mysterious and cute. Get him; name him; no regrets.

I am really tempted to say Rosen. His concussions do have me concerned. If he checks out medically, he's my guy at #1. I also think that if you take a guy at #1 he should be able to start right away.

However, I gotta go with AJ McCarron. He's listed as a restricted free agent, but his status may change. He's conducting an appeal based on the treatment of a shoulder injury where the Bengals placed him on the Non-football related injury list when he contends he should have been cleared to play. https://dawgpounddaily.com/2018/01/31/cleveland-browns-mccarron-possibility/ I don't know how he would fit Haley's schemes; I'll leave that for others to argue. I do know Hue likes him and think that he would be the veteran presence to marry those two different ideals.

So penciled in as week one starter when training camp begins, give me McCarron. Hopefully Rosen is on the team and shows why he was #1.

I'd like to see MCcown come back. He has a good attitude, knows the game and he's like having another coach. He would be a good mentor for any QB we draft. Also, I would like us to draft Rosen or Darnold. If Rosen checks out physically then I favor him but would not be upset with Darnold.

Hm... I want to draft Rosen first overall. This assumes through due diligence that the concussion issue is a non-issue and that he passes the interview process with flying colors. If not, I have to go with Darnold. (I think... lol)

I would like the starter to be a vet (maybe McCarron) under most circumstances. However, if we draft Rosen, I have no problem starting him day one, knowing he will have to take his lumps. My thinking is he would learn quickly, adapt to the game and get into rhythm by mid-season. I think with Rosen under center, Haley calling the plays, and adding another receiving threat and a workhorse running back that we would have a very potent offense with Rosen, Gordon, Njoku, Coleman, Duke, WR3 & RB1.

I insist we take a QB at #1 (Rosen or Darnold) because we've done it wrong for so long, it's time to do it right. This, in my view, would be doing it right.

To answer the question, Rosen is my starter in 2018.

I pretty much agree. After-all, we haven't taken a QB in the top half of the first round since Tim Couch.

Picking a QB at 1 is something we've only had an opportunity to do three times (this being the third).

Last year wasn't a good year for it. I feel better about this year's quarterbacks than I did about last year's.

If we signed Kirk Cousins, I could understand it, accept it, and I'd definitely be excited. But, like I've said, I really don't think Kirk is coming here.

With Smith going to the Redskins, I think we'll pretty much definitely be picking QB at 1. Don't see how we couldn't
