The 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract, source says. The biggest deal in NFL history on a average-per-year basis. https://twitter.com/MikeGarafolo/status/961668166211522561

That's a huge bet, and a they have to make, on a player who has not played much football. It'll be interesting to see the guarantees.

Drafting JFF instead of him or Teddy Bridgewater was the watershed moment for my current Browns outlook. What a [censored] dumb decision. Good for Jimmy, he's worth all the money.

Honestly, I had the tiniest shred of hope that someone would get a bug up their butt about something, and he would end up becoming a FA.

Well! Looks like we dodged a bullet there, eh? Incredible bucks, that. Good for him. Hope we get ours soon.

And the real number: Jimmy Garoppolo’s deal with the #49ers averages a league-high $27.5 million over five years with total guarantees totaling $74 million, per source. So he got $74 million guaranteed. That's behind Matthew Stafford and Andrew Luck for QBs. Also this: When 49ers' QB Jimmy Garoppolo's 5-year deal gets finalized shortly, it will include the largest three-year cash total for a new contract in NFL history, just shy of $90 million, per source. https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/961678645176696833

I look at it like they got to do it and we didn't. LOl..I think you don't understand the how this worked. Bill didn't think Cleveland was stable. He didn't want to trade the guy to a team he wouldn't sign with. Your buddy Hue is a big part of that. It is what it is. New England knew we were interested. Nobody went home at 4:30 PM and missed the chance. We never had a chance. You all the time say I don't know what I am talking about, don't get it. I think your defense of a 1-31 coach is a little overboard. Hue got to his record in 2 years. If he can even it up in 3 years, I will be amazed....and he will have to, he won't survive 7-8 win seasons for long. You do understand that don't you?

I agree we didn't have a chance to sign JG ... which is tragic, because I thought and think he is very good.
I also think that the reason we didn't have a shot at JG was more to do with how Sashi handled previous negotiations than how good or bad our team is. And I was all in favor of Sashi staying - and I think the 'great' position we are in to make a dramatic improvement this off-season is mostly down to Sashi ... so I am not hating on the guy.
I think JG will prove to be worth every penny. And while I want Cousins, and I'd pay a similar contract to get him, I think JG is better.

No problem. I wasn't even looking at who was posting what - just responding in general. On the one hand it's water under the bridge - like the Julio Jones trade and Wentz and all the other misses we've had ... and there's nothing to be gained by lamenting not getting JG we simply need to move on and form our identity, get a QB and be successful with whatever the plan this off-season is going to be. . . . . on the other hand it's till fresh and it still smarts that I wanted him so much and the 49ers gave up so little to acquire him. They were neck and neck with the Browns for the first pick in the draft when they acquired him and look at their fortunes since! That could have been the Browns! .... but yeah, got to let it go and focus on our team and what's in our control.

Big desperate bet by SF on this QB. Must be nice to have $100 million to blow. Leads me to think the NFL salary cap is bogus.

Good for him. Monetized his skills. Congrats.
Makes his agent happy, I am sure.
It is still an obscene pile of money. I have trouble thinking to scale on this. Tag prices just went up, and probably are not done.
I hope he does some insane amounts of charity work for that paycheck.

Eveerything just went up. The next above average QB to cash in will do exactly that... cash in.
I don't like it. You have linebackers and etc being elite and not getting as much, granted I admit whole heartedly the position of QB is the most important and thus, the most highly paid... but.
Not every QB will take a pay cut to keep a player!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a shame.

This is interesting: Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t want to apply maximum leverage Mike Florio,ProFootball Talk on NBC Sports Fri, Feb 9 6:35 PM EST 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could have applied more pressure and leverage to the team, getting an even better deal than the one he got. So why didn’t he?“Because this is where I want to be, honestly,” Garoppolo told reporters on Friday. “I wanted to get this deal done as fast as possible, and it’s only going to help our team going forward, going into free agency, and it’s 75 degrees out here. It’s not a snowstorm like Chicago. We just came from that, so I can speak on that. It’s a lot better here. You know, I don’t know. There’s other factors that go into it, too. That’s a big part. And so it’s just, I don’t know, I wanted to be here I was excited to be here, and I’m happy we got it done as fast as we did.” It’s hard to imagine a guy with seven career starts getting more than the most that any player in NFL history ever has gotten, but that’s what his circumstances dictated. And it could have been more costly for the team, if Garoppolo had been determined to get every possible dollar. Indeed, if he’d declined to do a long-term deal and play on a year-to-year basis, he could have made $90 million (if subject to the non-exclusive tag) or $97 million (if given the exclusive tag) before hitting the open market in 2021 — and beating whatever the top of the market will be at that point. Instead, he’ll likely be underpaid in 2021 at $24.1 million, the same way that Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson currently are at $22 million and $21.9 million, respectively. But Garoppolo will have made about $86 million by then. For a guy who played college football at Eastern Illinois, who arrived in the NFL via round two, and who has spent most of his career sitting on the bench, that’s a damn good outcome. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/jimmy-garoppolo-didn-t-want-233538800.html

J/C - On the bright side, we're the new leaders in cap space. $30M more than any other team.
Should be a lot of fun. I think we'll aggressively target free agents this year. Jackson wished he had hair to rip out last year due to the lack of veterans on the roster, and Dorsey doesn't exactly have a reputation of being a man unwilling to spend money.

He can have his wealth manager/attorney setup an incomplete gift, non-grantor trust in a state like Nevada or Delaware and slash his exposure to California's state income tax significantly. It's a trendy practice among the wealthy to shield yourself from high state income taxes.

Not so sure about that. Dorsey comes from GB FO originally and they were notorious for limited activity in free agency. I cannot think of too many FAs he signed in KC besides Maclin and some backup QBs (Foles, Daniels, etc.).

Not so sure about that. Dorsey comes from GB FO originally and they were notorious for limited activity in free agency. I cannot think of too many FAs he signed in KC besides Maclin and some backup QBs (Foles, Daniels, etc.). KC was unique, though. Dorsey inherited a young team that was 2-14 but had six pro-bowlers. The following season, at 11-5, they had 10 pro-bowlers. They had to conserve for the future, but I disagree on limited activity. They made major splashes in free agency/trade. Dunta Robinson (3 years, $15M) and Sean Smith (3 years, $13M) were two of the top corners. Trading for/signing Alex Smith (Obviously, with a pending extension) and extending Bowe (5 years, $56M) and Colquitt (5 years, $18M), plus tagging Brandon Albert ($9M) was the start of Dorsey's time with KC. That's an expensive offseason. They later made some big signings (Like Mitchell Schwartz) but focused on re-signing the young talent they'd assembled, like Justin Houston, Tamba Hali and Eric Berry, etc. We've got an abundance of cap space, but no major re-signings for at least a few years, unlike KC. If Dorsey was willing to cough up that kind of bread with large contracts on the horizon, I wonder what he'll do with us. That's not to suggest we're going to blow the cap space, of course, but with such a sizable amount, I think we're going to add a few high-profile players just as Dorsey did when he joined KC. I think there is also some high-value players off contract from the Rams, Packers, Redskins, Bengals and Chiefs. With our amalgamation of figureheads coming over from those organizations, I wouldn't be surprised if we target several of them - for example, there is a lot of talk about Trumaine Johnson, Lamarcus Joyner, Dontari Poe, Bennie Logan, Phillip Gaines, Tyler Eifert, Jeremy Hill, Jeff Janis and, of course, Kirk Cousins and potentially A.J McCarron. Those are just obvious connections, of course, nothing substantial.
