Every other President to date has done something presidential, in the oval office, deep in thought, etc.. Obama has his official portrait done of him in a shrubbery.. And to make matters worse, the artist commissioned to do the painting, is also known for paintings of black women holding the heads of decapitated white people... Not one of your better decisions Mr. President.

Clearly you don't know all about the portrait history. There are generally two portraits done for each former President. The first is one that is much more formal, the second and sometimes third are more casual. The more formal one is on display in the White House. The more Artsy one (such as this one of Obama) will be on display in the Smithsonian Institute Portrait Gallery. I swear, this just isn't important.. He's out of office, he has no sway anymore. Yet, just like the president, people keep coming back to him about everything and anything to discredit him in any way possible. Take a look at some of these. Some are funny. Some are very casual (reagan). Most are Presidents in a more informal setting. http://npg.si.edu/portraits/search?edan_fq[0]=set_name:%22America%27s+Presidents+(Reinstallation+September+2017)%22&edan_fq[1]=online_visual_material:true I'm not sure where you found that portrait your complaining about, but I went to the artists website and didn't find it. http://kehindewiley.com/

Gives me mad Boy With a Pipe vibes. I really have no problem with the painter. He just contextualizes various European perspectives onto an African American subject. I really dig Michelle's portrait too.

I swear, this just isn't important.. If anybody else selected an artist with a reputation for paintings of their race holding the head of decapitated folks from a different race, I DAMN SURE GUARANTEE YOU IT WOULD BE IMPORTANT!!!!!

The paintings are TERRIBLE. Michelle's doesn't look like her at all. Barracks is a great rendition of him but the Ivy makes it look like crap.

It's titled Judith Beheading Holofernes Again, just recontextualizes old stuff with an AA flair. I dig it, mainly because he's a great painter himself.

Why would we get mad at that when Andrew Jackson literally beheaded native Americans and the British and his portrait is on the most used on the most used bill in America. I would also guess, if we looked back far enough we could find an overlap somewhere. Just was a small world back then.

We agree on this. And O's hands look two feet long! Trump will have to have his painted 3 feet long now.

That potrait is extremely horrible. It's not even a good example of "Art". It looks like something you'd find in a thrift shop that might even have some velvet on it.

Whoever dressed Michelle Obama for her portrait must have dressed the artist Kehinde Wiley for the unveiling...wow! ...and the media made fun of Melania!

You guys just can't stand it when the one African American president does something non traditional and are all in favor when a racist president goes non traditional.
Typical Hypocrisy as usual.

i don't know about that. It's a pretty jagged, non precise cut. She might have needed the strength of her dominant hand to hold the girl's head still.

What is being conveyed in this painting? That Judith overthrew the Assyrian general who was punishing the Israelites. Do y'all not read the Bible?

i thought both portraits of barack and michelle were very well done. We can all interpret the art however we want, I think his is horrible, hers is a little better... Let's address for a moment the fact that of all the artists he could have selected, he selected one with a history of painting black women holding the severed heads of white people... If folks don't see an issue with that (or how that would be interpreted under ANY other circumstances), then get the hell out of the thread where Jeff Sessions referred to the Sheriff's office as having an Anglo-American history because your opinions on what is "racism" are pointless...

So that's where the #metoo movement started. I'm not sure. The tale states that she went to his camp to seduce him. The #metoomovement may have started with Esther

What is being conveyed in this painting? There is the obvious answer and then there is a biblical reference that some are trying to play it off as. The painter himself went on record about this back in 2012, when he said it was a play on 'kill whitey'. http://nymag.com/arts/art/rules/kehinde-wiley-2012-4/In a soaring studio on the outskirts of Beijing, where Kehinde Wiley came in 2006 to set up the first of his several global production outposts, the 35-year-old painter is showing off his women. Most of them are still incomplete—their faces need touching up, their gowns (custom-designed for his models by Givenchy) lack texture. But one already stands out: a tall, elegant black woman in a long blue dress—the canvas is enormous, eight feet by ten feet—calmly staring down the viewer. In one hand, she holds a knife. In the other, a cleanly severed brunette female head. “It’s sort of a play on the ‘kill whitey’ thing,” Wiley says.
