Like my last post in this thread?
Knocking your idea isn't the same thing as insulting you. Adding a comment like you normally do like "I expect those comments from someone like you." would be insulting you.

most posters here think we will or should get a vet FA QB n draft early a QB. This guy in Denver is saying nothing new. Only if we get Cousins do posters say skip QB early in the draft n most will say take another prospect in 2nd like Rudolph ir one later.
So I dont see this as a revelation of sorts n of course its just speculation.

i said it before, and ill say it again. yall sleeping on AJ.
dude has the tools to be good. he stepped into a crappy situation with Dalton going down and performed very well in a playoff game.
imagine what he can pull off going into training camp and the season as a starter. Not I. I have said many places I think he can be a pretty good qb. Whether he does or not remains to be seen.

Rich Cimini of ESPN wrote the following tweet. The quarterback landscape was altered this week with the news that AJ McCarron won his grievance against the Cincinnati Bengals and will be an unrestricted free agent.probably reported here and I missed it??? but glad to here this now we can make the offer without losing any draft picks
They can still Tag him with a Franchise or Transition Tag...but there are very good odds AJ will be a Brown unless something weird happens and we actually get a shot at a Drew Brees or something.
I'd rather have AJ as a Bridge QB then for us to over pay Cousins as a long term franchise QB.
jmho What do we figure 3 years 25 million 15 mil guaranteed?
hehe...just saw it was in the original thread article - AJ winning his case and is a UFA. lol
This is a big thing - can't wait for FA to start and we get him much cheaper then Cousins but still will draft our QB also!
Does anyone here think if we sign AJ we should not look to draft a QB in the first round as we have thought possible if we signed Cousins.
I have not seen much of AJ...I really liked him from college (but then again I like Alabama period) His skill set is very similar to Cousins. Just doesn't have the experience and history.

In no way do I think we're the only team going to be interested. Maybe the guy wants out of Ohio. Maybe a better situation opens up to him. Maybe his women wants nothing to do with Cleveland. Because he knows Hue may not be the major factor. Too many teams look to better the position.

The way salaries of QBs have shot up the past several years, getting Cousins locked in now at whatever price he may have, should be less expensive than trying to maintain QBs in the future. I remember people howling about how much Osweiller was getting paid when he first signed with Houston, but now almost any 3rd tier FA backup is specullated to get 16 mil a year.

Are we assuming that AJ will be a done deal?
I don't think he's a lock. Sure, Hue wanted him last year during the season. Hue is no longer the Offensive coordinator and there is a new front office. And they have a chance to take a QB at 1 or 4.
AJ is very much an unknown quantity and the QB drafted at 1 or 4 will likely have the talent to push AJ from day 1. Heck, Kizer will be able to push AJ.
It would make a strange dynamic in the QB room with 3 QBs vying for snaps, development and opportunity.

Personally, I'm not assuming anything. I don't think he's a lock. I do think he's a strong possibility because he makes a lot of sense given our particular situation, but who knows what the thinking in the building is? For example, as you say, given that Haley is now the OC, they may decide that they don't need a bridge QB if they take Darnold or Rosen.
It would be a strange dynamic only in the sense we've never had one, let alone three QBs talented enough to legitimately push to start. I think this would be an excellent position to be in. Let the best man win, if he gets hurt next man up.

I think we KNOW who we're taking at #1 and we won't park him on the bench for long. It'll be interesting to see who we talk to come FA. I would not be surprised to see us with a QB signed to a 1 or 2 year deal.

My main concern with McCarron is if he is really a bridge QB?
To me a bridge is a vet who has played but will clearly take the side role when your drafted guy is ready, be it mid season or the following season.
AJ doesn't have much experience to go on and he is young enough and unproven enough that he may not want to give up the job anytime soon.
Last year he was eager to come here. In his mind he thought he could play well enough to prevent us from taking a QB. That isn't the case today. We are going to take a QB and McCarron knows that at some point there is going to be great pressure to play the drafted guy, no matter how well McCarron is playing.

If we can get the McCarron that started and won games at the end of the 2015 season I would be interested. But would he want to come to a team that is taking a QB at #1 or #4? The Browns would offer a good chance to start but the pressure to win immediately would be great with the draft pick waiting in the wings.

To me it is pointing back to Josh. A experienced vet who can hold down the fort, provide leadership for the rook.
Josh clearly knows his days as a NFL player are numbered. McCarron is thinking his career is just starting.

McCarron wanting to start and keep the starting role is certainly a legitimate consideration, one to be taken into account by he and his agent. It may be a tipping point when he decides where to go.
Whether he wants to give up the job or not will only be determined by his performance. If he continually outperforms the competition it's a non-issue. If he doesn't, he takes a step back or gets traded, that's the nature of the business. But yeah, he may now see the situation as less than desirable, particularly if he believes he has very little chance of locking the position down for several years or longer. But that would be on him and would indicate a lack of confidence. I don't know that QBs see themselves that way. He may, he may not, but all indications are that he has no confidence issues.
As far as being a good pro in the room if he does have to take a secondary role eventually, that would have to be explored and discovered during the interview phase, I think.

Well, Josh McCown is 1-10 as Browns starter, while Kizer (0-15), Kessler (0-8), and Hogan (0-1) are a combined 0-24, but I was hoping for 6-8 wins this season. My first choice would be Cousins, but I realize that is a long shot. Second choice is Case Keenum. Third, I guess, is McCarron. Only scenario where I don't draft a QB at #1 would be Cousins.

I have a comment or two...
I went back and reviewed AJ's games in college as well as his play in the NFL. He does throw a nice deep ball and in both college and as a Bengal, AJ is about a 65% pocket passer who does take care of the ball.
He does have the qualities you want to see in a QB.

Especially when you can use it to further the case for Cousins, which has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion.

I have to laugh at those thinking that if we sign McCarron, he will only be playing until the rookie is ready. That to me is a flawed concept.
We need a competent starter now. If a FA comes in and is winning games, the rookie, no matter where drafted, should continue to sit. Only way he sees the field is if he is clearly outplaying the FA in camp and preseason.
McCarron has been in the league for a few years now. He has sat and learned. If he is required, you start him and keep him the starter until he proves to be less of a player than the rookie.
People claiming one of these rookies are better than a guy with experience is just hopeful speculation.
If a FA QB won't sign here because of our draft position, and the obvious situation of us drafting a QB high, shouldn't be signed anyway. These guys must have the confidence to think they will be better than a raw rookie. If the drafting of a QB at #1 scares them, IMO, they must not feel they are good enough to beat the rookie out. If that is the case, I don't want them on the roster.
RIP, Jim

Its still what I'd most like to see happen, but I don't think it will. My post was relevant because the conversation had turned towards McCown who has somehow attained mythical status here after one pretty good year with the Jets. It is relevant to say that in a recent stint with the Browns, McCown went 1-10 and also missed a lot of time to injuries. I also mentioned that McCarron would (reluctantly) be my second choice to Keenum among the so-called bridge QBs. Imagine that, talking about McCarron in a thread titled "More AJ". Or maybe you're just cheesed off because I don't agree with the "Josh, the savior" narrative?

And is it a negative to speculate on football message board?
I am not really a fan of McCarron and I hope he signs somewhere else. I have a hard time getting past his lack of arm strength and athleticism.

I'm not cheesed off, I simply think it's ridiculous to take a statement and twist it to fit your narrative, like writing something completely stupid like "Josh, the savior narrative" when nothing of the sort was ever written. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

I'm not a fan of McCaron, but your argument against him considering your crush on Rosen seems somewhat curious. Arm talent and strength are below average. May need to make greater effort to drive field and seam throws. Poor career deep ball completion rate. Excess air under ball allows challenges. Lacks gun to challenge safeties with rip throws over the top. Needs better anticipation. Poor mobility. Struggles to elude early pressure. Completed just 42.4 percent of his throws when forced to move. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2018/profiles/josh-rosen?id=2560059 How do you compare the two in those areas?

AJ may be much closer to starting where he is. We seem to assume he will hightail it outta town. He is relatively unproven. We can do better in FA IMO.

#InHueWeTrust Bro, we could sign him to a five year contract, pay him $20M a year, and give him a Mary Kay makeover and he'd never be the face of the franchise. Maybe the placeholder of the franchise.

j/c: Worth noting given the A.J. McCarron decision: if the Browns *had* been able to pull off the McCarron trade at the deadline, they would have sent second- and third-round picks to the Bengals for a guy who would have became a free agent eight games later. https://twitter.com/billbarnwell/status/965642459538776064Smart asset management.

Thank you for the apology, but its really not necessary. I get mad sometimes, but never stay mad. I was in a foul mood myself (its a Sunday-in-February-thing), so I certainly understand. I also apologize for reacting in anger to what was really a pretty mild rebuke. People disagree sometimes. Its not a big deal, so no worries.

j/c: Worth noting given the A.J. I am much smarter than Bill Barnwell because I said this like four days ago.

DAMN you Sashi for not making that happen. The Browns were 1 and 31 under Sashi's dumb-ass plan. Thanks Sashi!
