AND imagine the death sentence for drug dealers for a moment, do you think there is an ethnic group or two that might become targets? Does it matter? If they are selling drugs, black white yellow brown they all should go down. (yes I intended that to rhyme). I like the phrasing too, "targets"....almost like your saying the minority drug dealers will be victims. As long as the ethnic group being targeted is not white, male & middle aged ... to hell with rights?? Let's profile and infringe on peoples rights. I nearly posted this when there Sheriff Joe Arpaio came up the other day. Someone said it was cool that Joe was profiling and rounding up groups based on their color . . . . Having lived in AZ - I wanted to highlight that there are 2 million LEGAL Hispanics in AZ. 1/3 of the population .... and there are posters advocating that it's GOOD that they are being profiled and their rights ignored. That's a slippery claim. If someone is being pulled over simply for looking to be Mexican/latino, then that's wrong. If you ask someone who IS Mexican/latino for papers or DL that you have already pulled over for a REASON, than I do not think that is wrong. If a anyone gets pulled over you have to provide ID, proof of insurance, and proof of ownership of the vehicle. Are they profiling EVERYONE thinking they stole the car by asking for these documents?

So we are clear - Sheriff Joe, not only of national fame because he created his own Posse to prove Obama was not an American. https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/loc...-fake/95444730/He's been saying he has "proof" for many many years and yet .... And he was notorious for racial profiling. The "Right" loved him because he was tough on the damn illegals. Trouble was he trampled all over the rights of the legal Hispanic residents.

To be even more clear, Sheriff Joe was instrumental in driving the criminal illegal alien population out of Arizona, who he worked for, and over to California who just loves them.

And? How does this case have anything to do with what we are talking about? You are arguing a man that was sentenced as a reason for the system NOT working? Im confused..... Is someone trying to introduce a political "gotcha" post? tsk tsk.

DD, thank you for the insightful reply. I was actually hoping you would chime in with your experiences and what you see from the inside of things. A possible solution I've batted around in my head is to have a group of private attorneys enter in to contract with the State. Any capital punishment or similar level cases would tap this group of people instead of the Public Defenders Office. I do want to say, that in the major cases with publicity, HIGH powered attorneys are willing to provide services pro-bono as well. I think though, that you maybe on to something w/ capital punishment cases. But then again, you are talking about subsidizing lawyer fees, and when you have a clear cut open and shut case - why spend a million dollars on a defense for that? I like the idea, I just don't know if it would be feasible or monetarily able to do. The value in spending potentially millions on a defense to an open and shut case is the strengthening of the legitimacy of the legal system. Don't forget, our Right to have a defense, and the State's obligation to provide the defense if you can't afford to pay for one has nothing to do with the quality of the case. It has everything to do with the fact that you now find yourself charged with a criminal offense.

Thanks!
My main hope in all that was simply to start laying out the scope of what a serious conversation would entail and I don't presume to even have scratched the surface.

Is someone trying to introduce a political "gotcha" post? tsk tsk. Ummm ... you said it wasn't profiling if Sheriff Joe/someone was asking for papers once an ethnic was stopped during routine stop etc. I provided a link that says that wasn't what was happening. A court said he was racial profiling. It goes straight to the comment you made that profiling is okay if it's trying to tackle the drug problem ... which is a lot like saying it's okay to profile the people who aren't white since after all - the non-whites are the problem.

You go ahead and post stuff from the end of his career but I can tell you Joe was loved and was elected term after term for 24 years. I lived in Maricopa county Arizona and Sheriff Joe was my Sheriff. He was known as America's toughest Sheriff. Funny how the Left cries Troll when they don't like hearing the truth.

You loved Joe. Yeah that totally fits.
I am pretty sure that the 1/3 of the population of AZ that was Hispanic did not love Joe.
Woot woot - I lived in Chandler for 5 years. I can assure you that even among my white republican friends many/most thought his racial profiling was illegal and should have been stopped. Sure - pink for the inmates and no TV - I can totally get behind that. Be tough on the convicted. People did like that.
Hey - but I am sure in your gated community in Maricopa County you can go ahead and speak for the whole state or county .... And psst - crazy thought here - I think judging how well someone is "loved" at the end of their career is probably the most accurate way to gauge how the man will be remembered by history.

Illegal aliens got the boot and nobody but you cried for them. That is why so many are still here, killing our citizens. Because of people like you.

Obama ran for president twice and won twice. 100% record. He must have been loved even more.
