Knee sidelines Roye again
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
08.01.2007
Orpheus Roye's knees are giving him problems again, and the Browns hope arthroscopic surgery will allow Roye to be ready for the September 9 season opener against his former team.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Roye will have some cartilage cleaned out of his left knee Thursday morning. It's the same knee Roye had surgery on last winter, though Crennel said the loose cartilage is "in a different spot" than the previous problem.

Crennel said it's too early to tell how long Roye will be sidelined, but the Browns hope to have him back in time for the regular season. Crennel said the players who will get a chance to fill Roye's role as the starting left defensive end are Shaun Smith, J'Vonne Parker, Simon Fraser and Orien Harris.

"They're all going to get some work," he said.

Smith has been projected as the backup nose tackle behind Ted Washington but has taken some reps at end. Parker has been a nose tackle the last two seasons but saw time at end during the spring. Fraser started five games last year in place of Roye, and Harris in his first training camp with the Browns after being signed off Pittsburgh's practice squad last winter.

Roye's absence should also mean more reps for second-day draft picks Melila Purcell and Chase Pittman. Alvin Smith, another young defensive end, is out with a broken leg he suffered while playing this spring in NFL Europa.

Of course this happens in the one position where we can't afford to have any injuries..

I hope he's having the scope done somewhere other than the Cleveland clinic.

Get well fast, Orpheus!

I am afraid Roye is near the end of the line. If either or of Pittman/Purcell show something, i sure as heck wouldn't cut one of the to keep Roye around.

I like the guy but he is just wearing out.

Same here.

And before anyone asks, I forgot to mention that Simon Fraser was with the 3rd team yesterday. Pittman and Parker went 2nd, I believe.

If you ever get another look at Pittman, fill us in.

He was a pretty good player on a pretty good defensive LSU squad. I myself have high hopes for the kid. He has the temperament for the job and seems like a real down in the dirt scrapper.

I think he can be pretty good as a 3-4 run stuffing end.

They hope he's back in time for the opener. And if he doesn't come back in time, we have plenty of time to work with his replacement (or find someone else). It's better to happen now than 3 days before the opener.

Just looked it up......he isn't a DE though....too short and fat...errr...slow.

He is going to have to fight for a NT job.

Wonderful. The first injury in camp belongs to a starter at our weakest position on the team.

Yeah, they'd better hope that Roye gets back for week 1 or else Parker's gonna have another 200 yarder. (he might anyways with Roye). Can't really complain though, Savage has been fixing a unit at a time, and all he has left are D-Line, RBs, and WRs.

I don't even know if it was an injury. Sounds like it was something there and we were hoping to slide by.

He is faster than Roye, and he is only 1 inch shorter than Smith. Last year he got pushed around as a NT.

Well yeah, maybe I could have worded it differently. First guy to go down. Can't afford to lose him at all.

Well I guess you can say that for anyone. Can't lose anybody. But arguably the DL is our achilles.

to those claiming this is our weakest position, and the spot we're most vulnerable to injury...

have you looked at our RB group?...if Lewis goes down, any hope you might have for the offense goes directly into the toilet...DE isn't nearly that bad...we're thin there, no question, but that spot is nowhere near the improtance to a 3-4 D as RB is to the O...what experience does Wright have?...3 starts?...at a position that will dictate everything we do on offense?...

yeah, DE is the 1 position we can't afford injury at ...

Im interested in putting Pittman in there... or...

I know this isnt madden.. I KNOW!!!

but when i play w/ the Browns.. I ALWAYS move McGinnest to the RDE... ALWAYS..

maybe he can gain a few more pounds and try it out... he doesnt have that speed as a LB anymore... so maybe try something else... just a suggestion

Peen, I don't know if this is relevant given that it was the first day of Camp last Friday when I noticed this,, But Chase Pittman is aggressive... VERY aggressive. I saw him taking on an Olineman and I thought it was going to come to blows to be honest.. It didn't do that, but still, you would have to be blind not to notice Pittman and think,, wow,, I like this kids attitude..

Again, the relevance is questionable at best given the first day of camp, nobodys really hitting anyone and the pads weren't on,, so take it for what it's worth..

Why is everyone so worried... Fraser did a decent job last season.. he improved over the year before so what's to say he won't take another step forward this year?

I don't like Roye getting injured at all, but I'm not ready to slit my wrists over it either..

Not good news at all but not shocking.
It does help to know this early so several things can happen.

They need to get a starter to replace him..
If none perform well there's FA to look to.
There are a lot of bodies but I wouldn't use all of them for Roye's spot.

I'd leave Smith backing up Ted.
Why? We don't have a true NT to go behind him.

J'Vonne Parker -he's my first choice..he's actually a big NT at 6'4 320
Simon Fraser ..doesn't have the power/leverage to be a force..but has a high motor.
Orien Harris -supposedly a run stuff but his work ethic may be lacking...

Any word on Melila Purcell? I know he played in a 3-4 at Hawaii and was very productive. Plus, he has good size. I haven't heard anything about him though - anyone have any info?

This stinks. I hope he recovers fast. I had read somewhere that he looked to be in great shape too - hopefully that will help him bounce back quicker.

Would losing Roye be good? No, but sooner or later guys like Parker, Fraser, Harris etc. will need to take the place of our aging vets anyway. If they get extra reps at least the coaches can see what they are made of. Who knows? Maybe one of theses guys can step up and be the future.

Seriously, you're telling me. I'd rather Roye be perfectly ready to go no injuries than something bothering him. Besides he is near retirement anyway, people are right, time for Pittman and others to show us what they can do.
