Notes: Browns show interest in former Jaguars WR Allen Hurnsby Scott Petrak March 22, 2018

COLUMBUS — The Browns haven’t stopped shopping for receivers.

They’ve shown interest in Allen Hurns (6-foot-3, 195 pounds), a league source confirmed to The Chronicle on Thursday. He would add size opposite Josh Gordon and competition for Corey Coleman, who’s been a disappointment in two years since being the No. 15 pick in the draft — 56 catches, 718 yards, five touchdowns.

The Browns didn’t get nearly enough production from their wideouts last season and traded for Jarvis Landry last week. He caught 400 passes in four years with the Dolphins.

Hurns, 26, was cut Tuesday after spending four seasons with the Jaguars. Originally undrafted, he started 42 of 52 games with Jacksonville, totaling 189 catches for 2,669 yards, a 14.1 average and 21 touchdowns.

He had career highs with 64 catches for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2015 and was rewarded with a four-year, $40 million contract, including $16 million guaranteed. His production tailed off, with 39 catches, 484 yards and two touchdowns in eight starts and 10 games in 2017.

The Jaguars cut Hurns to save money after adding receiver Donte Moncrief and re-singing Marqise Lee.

The Cowboys, Jets and Ravens are also reportedly interested.

IN THAT CORNER

General manager John Dorsey apparently isn’t satisfied with the cornerback group, either.

He signed free agents TJ Carrie and Terrance Mitchell last week, and NFL Network reported the team had a visit with E.J. Gaines (5-10, 190) scheduled for Friday. He visited the Jets on Thursday and it concluded without a deal.

Gaines, 26, was a sixth-round pick of the Rams in 2014 and was coached by Browns coordinator Gregg Williams.

He spent last year with the Bills, starting 11 games with an interception, nine passes defensed and three forced fumbles. For his career, he’s started 36 of 37 games with three interceptions and 31 passes defensed.

He missed the 2015 season after a Lisfranc injury.

NO-TRADE CASE

The trade of defensive back C.J. Smith to the Seahawks was nullified when he didn’t pass a physical, a league source told The Chronicle.

The Browns agreed Monday to send Smith to Seattle in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2020. He played in three games for the Browns last year and returns to the roster.

CHANCE MEETING?

The Browns may be in the market for a veteran backup quarterback to go with starter Tyrod Taylor and the No. 1 pick in the draft. Drew Stanton, a second-round pick in 2007, would fit the bill.

ESPN reported the Browns hosted Stanton on a visit, but a league source told The Chronicle he briefly ran into members of the organization while they were on the West Coast scouting college quarterbacks. The team reported the meeting to the league.

Stanton, 33, spent the last four years in Arizona. He’s 11-6 as a starter in his career with a 52.4 completion percentage, 20 touchdowns, 24 interceptions and a 66.3 passer rating.

RIGHT QUICK

Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward could be in consideration for the Browns with the No. 4 pick. He’s widely viewed as the top pure corner in the draft and ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine to solidify his standing as a likely top-10 pick.

Ward didn’t run the 40 Thursday at the OSU pro day but did position drills, including showing good ball skills by going low to make a catch.

“He’s got what they call twitch,” strength coach Mickey Marotti said. “He’s so twitchy out there with his quick movements, his quickness, his overall downfield speed.”

KEEPING TABS

The Browns were well-represented in Columbus despite Dorsey, coach Hue Jackson and others from the personnel department and coaching staff in Norman, Okla., for a private workout with Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. They’ll continue their quarterback tour Friday with Josh Allen’s pro day at Wyoming.

Offensive line coach Bob Wylie, tight ends coach Greg Seamon, assistant defensive backs coach Jerod Kruse, assistant receivers coach Bob Saunders, linebackers coach Blake Williams, director of player personnel Chisom Opara, assistant director of scouting Glenn Cook and assistant director of pro scouting Jim Noel were all spotted inside the Buckeyes’ indoor facility.

Well, after doing very well in the trades..........Dorsey is fizzling out in FA. Combine that w/the Dorsey thing and I am not impressed.

We added several quality players at positions of need without blowing all our cap space. That's a success to me.

Free agency is where you fill in the gaps so that you can draft the best player available. Teams that reach for need often don't do well (hello Barkevious Mingo, Danny Shelton, Justin Gilbert, and many others!).

I think I would rather have Hurns over Pryor.

If we get Hurns, Gaines and Stanton I would be pretty happy.

For those of you upset about our inactivity in FA, we still have 9 draft picks and only so many roster spots.

Inactivity???? We traded for 3 players, who should all be starters, and play significant minutes. We signed 7 players on the 1st couple of days of free agency. We are still working on others. I don't see how anyone can call that being inactive. lol

The league year opened on the 14th, and it's only the 22nd. We have made 10 moves already. crazy Inactivity?

I really don't think we are looking at Stanton. Dorsey and company just ran into him in Cali. He has not been brought in for a visit.

I wasn't the one saying we have been inactive. Read the posts above mine. I was responding to them.

I guess I was responding to the idea, only through your post.

The Browns have been incredibly active. Will all of these guys make the team, and make an impact? Maybe. Maybe not.

However, we filled a lot of holes with legitimate NFL starters. There is still the 2nd round of free agency, which we are entering how. Then we have the draft. This team will be more experienced, and will have a deeper pool of talent. I expect a sizable improvement this year.

I've been really pleased with the moves thus far.

I feel like we've been really aggressive trying to fill holes.

Much better than being passive about it, when we surely need to improve our talent as a team.

Are our moves a be all end all of acquisitions? And even after this draft? Surely not.

It's just that I like this forwardness of the new FO in bringing talent in.

Maybe they've been hanging out with Dan Gilbert and crew.

It's interesting that you bring up the Cavs, because I think that a lot of the moves Dorsey made are "fit" moves. We'll see how well they fit, but I think that is what they went for. (much like the Cavs did when doing their last minute trades.

Good luck to Pryor. He'll join Crow

I like the fact that Dorsey is making the team older. This year we cannot say, we are too young or we are playing a rookie QB. Or we have no weapons at WR. The Browns are expecting to start winning now with no excuses. That is a refreshing change.
Now lets have a great draft.

I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

So, if the Eagles are now open to negotiations for Foles (according to recent reports), and are looking to recoup their 1st and 4th round picks they gave up for Bradford...who can realistically offer that? I Giants and Buffalo are the immediate two that spring to mind. I doubt the Giants trade that much for Foles, but I can see Buffalo getting on the phone. Which could mean Philly pick at 12, Buffalo 22 and 32?

The #Browns have shown some preliminary interest in former #Redskins pass-rusher Junior Galette, who has ties to the club, source confirms. @chickatNBCS first reported

PS - I also saw on MKC's Twitter that TP moved on from Drew and got a new agent, probably what he should have done before last year lol.

Seems like Galette had an off year last year and then tore his achilles two years in a row (not sure which one though) the years before.

Maybe he still hadnt fully healed last year?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

An E.J. signing would be great and spells the end of Jamar Taylor, most likely.

Good for Tramon. I don't know why, but I kinda felt bad for him. I felt like he was brought in here and wasn't really set up to succeed. Totally just a gut feel, with no hard evidence to back that up.
