Clem (and Arch),

I think this is a fair response to a very complicated situation. Unfortunately this is a very common response from people who propose that new laws are necessary in finding a solution. Expand back ground checks--- to include what? "I don't know" People with mental health problems shouldn't be allowed to own a gun--- how do we define mental health problems? "I don't know". How is X law supposed to prevent this from happening again? "I don't know".

It's these vague and nebulous proposals that I believe lends credence to Arch's concern about the law abiding person being blamed for the law breaker because it's the law abiding person who is going to significantly disproportionately be rounded up in those types of proposals.

Conversely, if I propose allowing armed teachers and you ask me "what does that look like, how will it stop a shooting" I can immediately tell you it should be voluntary, that teachers received annual training akin to law enforcement including things like qualifications and certain firearms/ammo allowed, that a teacher in the event of a shooting is to take a defensive posture as they do now, not go roaming the halls, and have the ability to stop the threat in a meaningful way if/when presented.

Yes, it's a simplification, and their are all sorts of nuances, but in this instance I can at least make a proposal, give a basis for how it could work, and point to a specific intended result.

You bring up some excellent points about the evolution of traffic safety. But I'll also point out that the solutions started out as ideas that addressed a specific problem, had a specific solution to address that problem, AND were able to measure the effectiveness.

Clem, there IS a conversation to be had and I think it can include new laws but anyone proposing a solution has to be able to describe what it looks like and what it is intended to do. I don't think any proposal has to be perfect from the get go, but it's simply not enough to throw out buzz words and overly vague language.

Good stuff guys

Those same protesters who assaulted another protester and put him in the hospital. It's not a peaceful protest anymore but mob stupidity and cruelty. I hope the 8 plus people who assaulted him get arrested and serve time for their crime.

Instead we can strip the rights of all american citizens because of a few nutjobs. Meanwhile the nutjobs will just make bombs instead or do even worse. Meanwhile gun related deaths will still be the least likely way to die at school but by all means let's focus on guns instead of the real dangers facing these kids.

My daughters high school was on lockdown yesterday. Call came in early that a person was going to deliver a bomb to the middle school. So they locked down the middle school and the elementary and high schools which are all in the same general area. Large police presence at all schools, changed the discharge rules, etc..

Didn't know much as of last night (other than there had been no incident)

Found out this morning that the call was supposed to go to Heritage Middle School in Florida.. the guy threatened the wrong school.

Now they believe (and I haven't confirmed this yet) that the call originated overseas....

The rest of the world has us figured out.. nobody needs to attack us, they can't beat our military.. but they have figured out the level of fear, distrust, and hatred we have for each other and they are using it against us.. little by little, bit by bit, tap tap tap drive that wedge in a little more... eventually we will be uncontrollably at each others throats... if I wanted to bring down the USA, that's what I would do...

Pennsylvania school wants to arm students with rocks to protect them against active shooters

Schools nationwide are debating President Trump’s call to arm teachers and security guards with guns – while one Pennsylvania school is getting attention for its last line of defense.

Blue Mountain School District Superintendent David Helsel made headlines recently after testifying to lawmakers at the state capitol that his students could be armed with rocks in case of an active shooter lockdown.

“Every classroom has been equipped with a five-gallon bucket of river stone,” Helsel told lawmakers. “If an armed intruder attempts to gain entrance into any of our classrooms, they will face a classroom full students armed with rocks and they will be stoned.”

High school students plan pro-life walkout after gun debate

“If schools, not only just our school and our administration, but across the country are going to allow one group of students to get up during class and walk out to protest one issue, would they still give the same courtesy to another group of students who wanted to protest…abortion?” Benzel told “Fox & Friends.”

Students at Rocklin will find out a little over two weeks from now.

Gillespie announced the pro-life walkout is set for Wednesday, April 11, at 10 am EDT. Just like the National School Walkout Day, they are planning to walk out for 17 minutes.

This is great! Conservatives teaching kids to protest like liberals! i love it. If they believe in it they have the right to make their voices heard.

Sadly, this being prompted by the murder of 17 kids by GUN Violence is not a great or happy thing but if they are going to co-opt the walkout for a worthy cause that they believe in, so be it.

Great lets make it national protest week and let the kids all have an extra week off from school. I mean it's not like they want them in school to learn something useful anyways so might as well right? Lets have it as an unpaid holiday for the teachers too while we are at it since they want to encourage students not to attend classes.

Show me these kids protesting on a Saturday and I might start to care.

All across the nation....today. There will be millions of students, teachers & parents marching. And, if you don't already care then you are heartless.

Terrorism in schools should never exist. But, it does here in the USA and I guess some of you people think that it is the norm.

I am not heartless. I am just not stupid enough to believe gun regulations are the problem. Anyone who looks at the facts understands that if theses kids quit bullying the more awkward kids to begin with that 90% of the problem would go away but these kids sure love to troll the awkward kid until they snap.

No gun regulation in the world will stop someone planning to do something illegal to begin with. Like OMG I shouldn't buy an illegal gun to go murder people with because that would just ruin the whole thing! I know let's make bombs instead! Yay!

I hate seeing the kids being manipulated like this. I mean it's just so amazingly obvious what the left is doing to these poor kids it just fills me with disgust.

That's interesting because these things do not happen in Canada, in Europe, In Australia, In Asia, In Australia, in NZ. Excluding cartel and warfare/political/social terror violence in Central America/South America and Africa, random school violence also does not happen in these more troubled regions. And, even when they do they don't happen with the regular occurrence that they do here in the US. Mental illness affects people all around the globe yet, these things do not happen with the frequency that the do here. But yea, you and the NRA can keep telling us how it isn't the gun law/regulation issue.

The GOP and the NRA should be afraid because the kids who are 16, 17, 18....they have been motivated and are engaged and will be voting. Some will be voting as early as Nov. Others will be voting in 2020. They will speak and they will unseat these spineless politicians who continue to take the NRA's blood money.

Yea, let's have safe zones like Europe let Muslim immigrants in so they can rape and pillage like they do In Germany. Then we can all live in tents and crap in the streets. Protest when some rich person gives us money to do so. Lastly, we can take that money buy marijuana and other drugs and pretend that we all can coexist. You are clueless!!!

What a laugh. The NRA gives less to politicians than labor unions. When do we start screaming about them owning politicians? Here's and interesting site so you can see who's buying whom. I put up a few examples.

To put it all in perspective.

However, the NRA does spend a lot of money buying opposition ads every year. I've seen the figure to be as low as ~10 million a year. That's where they spend their money.

Germans are living in tents now? I go to Europe twice a year and didn't see that in Germany or France. My expat friends who live in Germany never mentioned it either. Have you been over there recently?

Meh, everyone will march and get full press coverage as the Left pushes its agenda. In the end, some changes will be made, some I even agree with, but our 2nd Amendment Rights are safe.

If they go too far, the NRA will file suit and take it to the Supreme Court where we will win.

This I believe is why the Left has attacked the NRA so hard. They know it is our strength.

Even Merkel has admitted that there are no-go zones in Germany. https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/925...-refugee-crisis

Quote:
Angela Merkel admits German NO-GO zones are 'a REALITY'

ANGELA Merkel has admitted German no-go zones are a “reality” in shocking comments which add to fears there are places in the country where outsiders and even police offices are afraid to visit.

The German Chancellor, who is approaching her fourth term in office, confessed there are places in her nation “where people are afraid to go”.

Her shocking comments come after a shock report revealed gangs of men are preventing people from straying into once vibrant areas of the country for fear of violence and abuse that even law enforcement has been unable to control.

During an interview with n-tv on Monday, she said: “The state has to ensure that whenever people move or meet in public areas they feel safe.

“It means for example that there cannot be any no-go areas, that there cannot be areas where people are afraid to go - but such places are a reality.

“So we have to call them what they are and do something about them. “

At the start of this year, Police Union chief Rainer Wendt claimed authorities are unable to enforce the law thanks to the rise of dangerous no-go zones caused as a result of mass immigration.

He demanded German politicians get crime levels under control or risk “police-free zones in Germany”.

The police chief said the no-go areas could end up being ruled under criminal laws or even Sharia law, rather than those set out by the German government.

He added: “The year 2017 must be a year of law enforcement. And indeed the most consistent prosecution for those who believe not to abide by the laws in Germany."

When quizzed over the names of the areas, Mrs Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters on Wednesday that "the chancellor's words speak for themselves".

Interior Ministry spokesman Johannes Dimroth declined to comment on the no-go areas, saying it was a matter of security for local not federal authorities.

I think allowing students to walk out of class sets a pretty reckless precedent. If they can walk out of class without discipline for a righteous (righteous as determined by whom?) political cause, doesn't that basically make school optional?

I'd love to critic specific idiotic posts above.

I really want to. Really, really want to.

But I think we can all agree that won't do any good.

Instead.

The children march and plea with us to "Please make us safe at school."

The Left has taken that away from the kids and turned it into,
"Please help us by banning assault weapons and crushing the NRA."

Once again the Left pretends to care about people when it is the Agenda that matters most.
Shame!

Some Large Donations

The announcement underscored that while students are the face of the movement, the March for Our Lives is no mere high school event. Early last week, march organizers took out a full-page ad in The New York Times to appeal for donations from businesses.

"We've had an extraordinary outpouring of generosity and have raised just over $3 million on our GoFundMe campaign," the March 11 ad said. "But it turns out marches are really expensive, and we want this march to be a seismic moment of change in this country."

The ad, signed by Hogg and 17 other Stoneman Douglas students, urged businesses to adopt schools in their communities and pay for students to be able to attend the march in Washington.

The march has attracted support and donations from the likes of Oprah Winfrey ($500,000); George and Amal Clooney (also, $500,000); Miami Heat basketball player Dwayne Wade, who visited Stoneman Douglas after the shootings, and his wife, Gabrielle Union ($200,000); Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff ($1 million); and Josh Kushner, the brother of President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who the online news site Axios reported has donated $50,000.

March for Our Lives organizers did not respond to a request for comment by deadline time regarding the march's overall budget and related matters.

The prominent place for the students in the lead-up to the march shows a balance between the desire to keep the focus on the age group that has been leading the debate after the Parkland shootings and the need for adults and adult organizations to be involved in something as complicated and expensive as a nationwide series of marches.

"It's pretty clear these young people are speaking for themselves," said Gretchen Brion-Meisels, a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and an expert on protest movements. "It is also pretty clear they have been supported by adults in all the ways we would hope adults would help young people. I think there is a delicate balance between adults and youth partners to try to create change."

They can raise money to march but none to pay security at schools?

Trump at Mar-a-Lago as thousands March for our Lives. White House applauds 'courageous young Americans'

David Jackson, USA TODAY Published 11:06 a.m. ET March 24, 2018

The White House released a statement Saturday as thousands of protesters descended upon Washington, D.C., for the much-anticipated March for our Lives event.

“We applaud the many courageous young Americans exercising their First Amendment rights today. Keeping our children safe is a top priority of the President’s," said deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters.

President Trump departed Washington D.C., Friday evening to visit his golf club in Palm Balm Beach, Fla. He'll be at Mar-a-Lago — nicknamed the 'Winter White House' — through the weekend.

Walters went on to explain Friday's decision by the Justice Department to rule to ban bump stocks "following through on the President’s commitment to ban devices that turn legal weapons into illegal machine guns.”

Bump stocks were not used in the Valentine's Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead, an attack that has since launched a reinvigorated campaign for tighter gun laws.

Trump, however, called for the Justice Department to act on the bump-stock devices, which were attached to rifles used in the Oct. 1 massacre in Las Vegas, in which 58 concert-goers were slaughtered by a lone gunman firing from a high-rise hotel.

Scores are expected at rallies in every U.S. state to call for stricter gun control in the wake of last month's mass shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school.

Firstly this issue has nothing to do with Germany. Clearly people on this board have trouble reading. I said the mass shooting events that occur on a regular basis very rarely happen anywhere else in the world. Some other poster then posted their racist rant about immigrants in Germany. Strange how we got from here to there. notallthere

Nevertheless, if you want to go there...schools, malls, concerts, night clubs, churches and movie theatres have become "no-go areas" in the US.

Adults are just as bad, if not worse with cell phones. Every Friday my wife and I meet for drinks after work. I can't tell you how many adults sitting in a bar with their friends, colleagues, partners etc. are sitting on their phones and not "present" with the company they sit with. I see it happening at restaurants and concerts too.

So you agree if they have their cell phones on they are not protesting they are chatting, twitter, selfies but really have no concern what is going on around them or care about any issue.

Actually they are using social media to promote their actions. I can see why YOU wouldn't want that. #fascism

So what you are trying to say is that everyone of them are using their cell phones for " Actually they are using social media to promote their actions. I can see why YOU wouldn't want that. #fascism " and not for chatting, twitter, selfies ?

I'd say maybe 2% are using social media to promote their actions.

It's Saturday. You make no sense at all. You just want to be right for once in your life.

I have absolutely no idea what point you are trying to make. I was at today's rally in Portland and I saw tens of thousands of students and adults & the overwhelming message was clear...change is coming and the politicians who are supported by the NRA should be afraid. 95% of the signs at the rally were anti-NRA. And, this is just one city across this country where demonstrations happened. These students will help vote the spineless politicians out.
