Republicans warn Trump against axing Mueller
By BURGESS EVERETT, ELANA SCHOR and KYLE CHENEY 04/10/2018 01:17 PM EDT

Republicans are mounting an urgent defense of special counsel Robert Mueller in the face of President Donald Trump’s latest attacks, with one key senator leading a renewed push to protect him and other GOP lawmakers arguing the special counsel's report should become public when Mueller finishes his work.

The GOP alarm was palpable on Tuesday in the wake of Trump leaving the door open to canning Mueller. Republican lawmakers are desperately trying to keep Mueller’s probe into Trump on track after the FBI raided the offices of Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen, warning Trump he will end his presidency with such a move.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) is pressing for the Senate Judiciary Committee to take up his legislation aimed at insulating Mueller from any attempted firing. Tillis is in discussions with Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) about merging two separate Mueller protection bills and then persuading Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to pass them.

“It’s a good bill that’s going to have enduring value beyond this presidency. I think the president’s frustrated; I may be if I were in the same position,” Tillis said. “But I do think it’s a bill that’s worthy of a mark-up in Judiciary and sending it to the floor.”

The reaction on Capitol Hill came after Trump, responding to Monday’s FBI raid of Cohen’s office, raised the specter of trying to end the special counsel investigation. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders deepened the intrigue on Tuesday when she said flatly that Trump "certainly believes he has the power to fire Mueller."

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is so far unmoved. On Tuesday afternoon, he reiterated his belief that Mueller will not be fired and that Congress has no obligation to do anything.

"I haven’t seen a clear indication yet that we need to pass something to keep him from being removed," McConnell said.

Still, there were several more signs of the GOP circling Mueller to protect him. Four Republican senators said in interviews Tuesday that Mueller’s report should see daylight when it’s complete, even if the Trump administration has the option of keeping it secret.

“The facts will come out one way or the other,” said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas). ”I don’t have any trouble with it being made public.”

Maneuvering to make Mueller’s findings public is one thing for Republicans. Passing legislation to protect him is another hurdle entirely, and one that would be sure to enrage Trump.

If Trump fires either Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) would not rule out calls for impeaching the president. But he urged Republicans to head off such a crisis by protecting Mueller now.

Grassley pointedly nudged Trump to stop entertaining a Mueller termination on Tuesday, telling Fox Business Network that "it would be suicide for the president to want to talk about firing" the special counsel. But Grassley has not taken a firm position on the Mueller protection bills pending before his committee, saying there may be constitutional concerns with the legislation.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) echoed Grassley's skepticism on Tuesday that the plans were constitutional — even though he's a frequent Trump critic who has described a baseless Mueller firing as a possible impeachable offense. Other Republicans took a more measured approach to urging Trump to back down on a firing.

“I would hope it’s not needed,” said Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), a former Senate Intelligence Committee chairman. “Any move in either direction is probably the wrong move. Stay the course until we finish it.”

Whether the Senate GOP's pointed defense of Mueller translates into legislation to protect his job remains to be seen. Two such bills have languished in the Senate for months. But Republicans' unequivocal support for the public release of Mueller's report, which isn't required by DOJ regulations, suggests they're ready to go to bat for him.

“As much transparency that we can bring to this investigation, the better it would be,” said Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.). “There’s going to have to be some guardrails in place on that, where appropriate, but I think transparency generally is the right principle.”

Justice Department regulations that govern Mueller’s appointment require that the bipartisan leaders of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees be notified when his work is complete. Those regulations don’t mandate the submission of any report to Congress on Mueller’s findings, but Rosenstein would come under significant political pressure to release any report from the special counsel.

“I can’t imagine that there wouldn’t be a public interest in having at least the non-classified portions of that report available for public consumption,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said in an interview. “It will be the foundation for a conversation that members of Congress will have to have with their constituents.”

Trump took a more direct swipe at Mueller on Monday than he has in the past. And now, more than ever, Democrats say, Congress should intervene to pass legislation to prevent Trump from short-circuiting the Mueller probe.

A Tillis and Coons bill would allow special counsels to challenge their firing after the fact, while a competing proposal from Graham and Booker would provide judicial review before any special counsel could be axed. The trick is merging the measures in a way that Grassley would be inclined to take them up. He dismissed questions from reporters on Tuesday.

“We’ve been trying to marry the bills for some time, and we’ve made some progress in our communications among senators,” Booker said in an interview. But Booker made clear that even if the Judiciary Committee can reach a bipartisan agreement, the same obstacle remains: “[W]ill we get McConnell to put it on the floor? That’s the real question.”

In the House, there's been virtually no appetite for legislation to protect Mueller from the president. A bill sponsored by Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) has the backing of nearly every Democrat in the House but only one Republican, Rep. Walter Jones of North Carolina.

Rather, Trump defenders who hold disproportionate sway on the House Judiciary Committee have agitated for deeper investigations of what they contend is misconduct by senior FBI and Justice Department officials who scrutinized the Trump campaign's Russia contacts.

One of those committee members, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), is calling for the panel to bring in Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Rosenstein and Mueller himself to explain the thinking behind their investigative maneuvers.

"I think the president is very frustrated," Gaetz said.

McConnell insisted several times he is confident that Trump will not fire Mueller, a sentiment echoed repeatedly by Republicans on Tuesday. But when Trump has lashed out in the past, the White House issued soothing statements designed to ease such concerns.

There's been no statement this time.

Sen. Pat Leahy (D-Vt.), a former Judiciary Committee chairman, said he hoped Trump's comments would stir Republicans to act.

"That kind of assault on how the criminal justice system works," he said, "I have never seen anything like that since Watergate."

So let me get this straight... Rosenstein is a Republican. Mueller is a Republican. Sessions is a Republican. Trump is attacking them all and people blame the Democrats for all of this?

How stupid can people be?

Washington (CNN) — During his first sit-down interview since being fired last year, former FBI Director James Comey reportedly compared President Donald Trump to a "mob boss."

A source present at the ABC News taping told Axios that an upcoming "20/20" interview with George Stephanopoulos will "certainly add more meat to the charges swirling around Trump."

The source also told the publication that Comey "told George things that he's never said before" and that the special will "shock the President and his team."

A clip released of the interview shows Stephanopoulos asking Comey, "how strange is it for you to sit here and compare the President to a mob boss?" Comey himself doesn't speak in the video.

Comey was fired by Trump last year, with the administration saying it stemmed from his handling of the investigation into Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's private email server.

Following his departure, Comey told the Senate Intelligence committee that the President had demanded his loyalty, pressed him to drop a probe into ex-national security adviser Michael Flynn and repeatedly pressured him to publicly declare that he was not under investigation.

He wrote that Trump said: "'I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go."

Comey also claimed in Senate testimony that he was defamed by the administration over their justification of his termination. Trump later said the Russia investigation was on his mind when he decided to fire Comey.

The ABC interview, which will air Sunday night, is part of a press circuit for Comey's upcoming book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies & Leadership."

CNN's Jake Tapper will interview Comey on April 19 and on April 25 Anderson Cooper will host a town hall with the former FBI director.

I love that over a dozen rock-solid indictments later, they're still trying to pretend it's some fruitless, partisan witch hunt.

I've long been on record as saying that the Russia stuff and everything else would be, in the long run, a waste of time. The odds of catching a big scalp were slim, and if you didn't, you'd lose a lot of leverage.

But the sheer idiocy of the Trump family and the people in their orbit is staggering.

Manafort literally went down because Dementia Jr. was so dumb that he openly corresponded over e-mail about committing federal crimes.

I thought the Hillary camp couldn't be topped with their incompetence in those leaks, but my God.

And the whole reason the Cohen raid went down is because Trump was stupid enough to say (on camera!) that he knew nothing about the Stormy Daniels payment, thus ethering his lawyer/client rights.

Now the question is - did Cohen advise him, and Trump just ran his mouth anyway because he's too dumb, or is Cohen so dumb that he didn't even think to advise his client?

Here's what I know Diam. Trump will attack anyone who disagrees with him. He doesn't care which party they belong to or whether their core beliefs are Republican or not. I know all of these men were well respected by Republicans until Trump was elected. Now after Trump is elected, they're suddenly the enemy. Because...... Trump said so.

I know Mueller is doing the job that was assigned to him by actual Republicans. I know his job is in the field of law enforcement and prosecution. I know that indictments, convictions and subpoenas have resulted from his investigation.

I know many people who wish to deny this and act like all of this is just a witch hunt when the results prove otherwise.

I've been saying since day one that someone should pitch a TrumpCare bill in Congress that's basically single-payer, Medicare-for-All, and praise him while pitching it.

He'd be stumping for it in a week.

Trump has no true ideology, and that can be used to advantage.

4 senators just introduced bipartisan legislation to protect Mueller

From CNN's Daniella Diaz

A bipartisan group of senators just introduced legislation that would make it harder for special counsel Robert Mueller to be fired for investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

These are the senators behind the legislation:

— Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina

— Chris Coons, D-Delaware

— Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina

— Cory Booker, D-New Jersey

The bill is called the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, which protects Mueller and ensures that the Special Counsel can only be fired for "good cause" by a senior Justice Department official.

The news comes after White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said publicly that President Donald Trump believes he has the power to fire Mueller. She did not suggest the President would be moving to do so.

Once you decide to break out of your bubble of hate, you will see more clearly that there were many Republicans who voted against President Trump.

Which is why Congress hasn't 25'ed his ass yet.

He's too useful an idiot to simply toss away, so long as there is the chance he'd rubber stamp any junk they send to his desk. Only when he becomes a liability to their brand will they leave him in the lurch.

This is true.

But that doesn't make it logical that there is a deep state breaking laws and running the justice department and FBI. It doesn't make it true that Mueller or Graham and others are undermining the POTUS. In fact what those guys are trying to do is protect America and what it stands for. Like it or not Mueller was appointed for good reason. His investigation needs to run its course. The only person responsible for Trump's woes is himself. It's laughable that you make excuse after excuse for him.

The funniest part about all of this is that Michael Cohen absolutely ruined his life to take a bullet for Trump that had no point being taken.

The people who respect and admire Trump are the slowest and the dumbest of idiot slugs. They couldn't care less if Trump was so dumb that he let a porn star outsmart him.

If Trump had simply reached into his pocket and cut a check directly to her it would have been infinitely easier and none of this would be going anywhere.

lol, anybody want to try and make it through the opening monologue?

i died when he started listing the qualities of a mob boss.

for some reason, tax evasion popped out in big bold letters. so did prostitution. i dont think hannity really thought that one out too well.

he did does the typical trump supporter spin and plays whatabout with the clintons.

ok, typical trump supporter spin, nothing to see here...

but then, the part that wasn't so funny anymore: he had a image up there calling it the mueller crime family, and thats when the real propaganda started. its terrifying.

whats worse is that people actually listen and believe what this guy is saying. it's alex jones on national tv. and people actually consider him a journalist.

again, i only watched the opening monologue. thats all i could get through. for supposedly being all about law and order, conservatives sure go out of their way to discredit the law and order.
