• Indians No. 20 prospect Eric Haase extended his hitting streak to five games with his first homer of the season, a three-run blast, in the first inning of Triple-A Columbus' loss to Rochester. Haase, who is batting .341 through 11 games, added a pair of singles later in the game, finishing 3-for-4.

Today's pitching line-up is a good example of the Tribe's "seasonal" strength.

Clevelandger vs. Tillman

Every 4 games the Tribe is sending-up a decent starter. Other teams just can't do that.

For 2018, Tillman is 0-3, 11.91 ERA,
for 2017, Tillman was 1-7, 7.84 ERA.

Try a sharper razor Tillman.

BTW, The Tribe's 5th starter - Josh Tomlin - may have a sucky career ERA (4.69), but he has an excellent career WHIP (1.215).

Fewer baserunners, fewer inherited runners per out for relievers, less wear and tear on the catchers.

I think that Clevinger might just be the ace of the staff by next season. Some might say that I'm absolutely nuts, what with Kluber and Carrasco on board, but Clev is unbeaten in 11 starts since July 31 of last season. I think that he's special.

Heard a stat during the game...

Since August 1st 2017 Kluber has the best ERA in baseball at 1.44

Klev is second at 1.49

BTW... Happy Birthday!

Yep!

Happy birthday Tito!

59 years-old today.

Will hopefully coach the Indians for another 5-10 years.

One of the very few bright spots in recent Cleveland sports.

Next Tribe day off - May 10th. 18 days/19 games - (11.7% of the entire season)

Also Indians longest home stand of the year begins this Tuesday - 11 games in 10 days.

I hate to see it so early.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

We definitely have the weakest division in the AL this year.

I think the division winners will be BOS, CLE and HOU. That seems pretty clear even at this point.

For the wildcard, the only teams that really seem like they can compete are LAA, NYY, and MAYYYBE TOR and MIN.

The line on today's game in Baltimore is Cleveland -210.

Which I'm pretty sure means the Tribe has roughly a 2 out of 3 chance of winning the game.

That may not sound great, but it is for an away game.

Any MLB team that wins 2/3rds of their away games is certain to make the playoffs.

Another outstanding performance by Cookie.

The starting pitching has been insanely good (save for Tomlin's first start).

Twins about to lose again.

Go Tribe.

The only thing standing between Kluber and his 3rd CYA might be Carrasco. They could easily end up splitting the local media votes.

Keep an eye on what Shane Bieber is doing in AA....

At 22 years old, Shane Bieber is roughly a year and a half younger than the average age of his peers in Class AA but in totality as a pitcher, Bieber is the most mature at his level. Through his first four starts in 2018, Bieber has thrown 26 innings, with 28 strikeouts, zero walks and three runs allowed. Bieber highlights consistency as a key to his early-season success.

Side note, what is going on with Salazar? Might be time to move on from him when the time is right. He seems mentally weak. I get the Tribe feels the same way.

I think the Indians think Salazar is a head case. I remember reading last year that a source from the Indians' organization said "he keeps having MRI's that show no structural damage, but he says he has pain.". Its never good when unnamed sources inside an organization speak up about someone who's still in the organization. Its almost like they are trying to send Danny a message that they are running out of patience.

Cleveland Indians reach minor league deal with veteran outfielder Melky Cabrera

Updated 7:40 AM; Posted 3:11 AM

By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com phoynes@cleveland.com

BALTIMORE -- The fans aren't overly excited about the Indians outfield and apparently the front office feels the same way.

It's been confirmed that they've reached a minor league deal with veteran switch-hitting outfielder Melky Cabrera, who like many free agents this past winter went unsigned. Cabrera, 33, must pass his physical for the deal to go through.

If Cabrera passes his physical, he'll report to extended spring training in Goodyear, Ariz. He's expected to stay there for about a week and then report to Class AAA Columbus. From there it will be up to him on if and when he's promoted to the big leagues.

Cabrera has been working out in Tampa.

The Indians have a good read on Cabrera because he's spent the last three years playing against them with AL Central foes Chicago and Kansas City. Last year he hit .285 (177-for-620) with 17 homers and 85 RBI with the White Sox and Royals.

Cabrera will also help balance manager Terry Francona's lineup, which leans heavily to the left. Francona has said more than once that he's one switch-hitter short since Carlos Santana signed with the Phillies.

The Indians haven't received much production from their outfielders with the exception of Michael Brantley. While Brantley is hitting .320 (16-for-50) with one homer and eight RBI, Bradley Zimmer is hitting .236 (13-for-55) with one homer and three RBI, Tyler Naquin is hitting .268 (11-for-41) with one homer and four RBI, Brandon Guyer is hitting .129 (4-for-31) with two RBI and Rajai Davis is hitting .194 (6-for-31). Lonnie Chisenhall was hitting .235 (4-for-17) when he went on the disabled list with a strained right calf.

No promises have been made to Cabrera that he'll make the big leagues, but if he does, he's a corner outfielder. As long as Brantley is healthy, he's going to stay in left field, which means right fielders Naquin or Guyer could be in for some changes. Naquin has options left, while Guyer is in the second year of a two-year deal.

Cabrera has played 13 years in the big leagues.

Tribe left fielders rank fourth in the AL in batting average and OPS at .282 and .745, respectively. But they rank last in runs.

The center fielders rank 10th in batting average at .209, 12th in OPS at .562 and tied for 10th in runs with seven.

The right fielders rank 10th in batting average at .232, 12th in OPS at .535 and 14th in runs with five.

It sure looks to me like the Tribe has some pretty decent pitching prospects on the farm.

However their best prospect - Triston McKenzie - has been on the DL since the season began.

Forearm soreness. I don’t like the sounds of that. But it could be nothing.

Here’s what the site https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/players/news/2431359/triston-mckenzie/
says about McKenzie:

He'll almost certainly begin 2018 at Double-A Akron, with a strong possibility of making his MLB debut at some point next season.

Tomlin's HIP* was a little high last night - 1.093.

Kluber got absolutely hosed on what should have been a 3rd strike on Seager to end the game and give him a complete game. What a shame.

Yikes, Carrasco is getting his ass handed to him today. Seattle leads 5-1 in the middle of the 3rd. He's given up 2 bombs, and even the outs are going to the warning track. Could be a short outing.

Tomlin brings his 9.49 ERA to the mound today against a heavy hitting Seattle lineup. Will it be "bombs away, dream babies", or will he find his command and keep them at bay? I'm not optimistic, but you gotta play the games.
