First car? Mom and dad bought. Dad drove it for many years, before I 'got' it. I don't remember the year though - late 70's Plymouth Horizon, 4 door hatchback, 4 cylinder, 5 speed.

My brother, who is 5 years older than me, learned to drive in that car. Dad taught him, and I rode along. Brother couldn't drive a manual. Got the 'hiccups' for a long time. (I bet many know what I'm talking about)

I decided that wasn't going to happen to me when dad taught me how to drive. I didn't want the hiccups. The bouncing from not using the clutch well, basically.

So, living in the country, and having a long lane, I taught myself how to drive it, starting at about age 15.

Got pretty good at it. (only practicing when mom and dad weren't home) Got my permit at 16 and dad said it's time to learn how to drive a manual.

It blew him away. I was shifting without even using the clutch. (like a semi driver would do). All dad said was "Well, that went pretty well. Good job."

First car I BOUGHT? 1987 GMC S-15 pickup. Why? Dad wouldn't let me take a car to college. I was married, had a kid, full time college student, and had a part time job. I spent a year riding bike, taking my son to a baby sitter - rain, snow, whatever. Dropped him off, then rode bike another mile or so to work. After work, backtrack.

Decided that S-15, 4 cyl. 5 speed with vinyl seats and no A/C was better than riding bike. Plus, I was then able to get another part time job, delivering pizzas.

Back home there was a independent used autodealer two towns over. His name was Ed Pinkley. He dealt primarily in Fords..His lot was full of sedans like the fiesta, focus, and fusion...but oddly enough he did not have very many tauruses...it was rare to ever find one on his lot...I remember those days when everyone had their fingers crossed hope the find a Pinkley Taurus....oddest thing though....no matter the year or condition ED always sold them for $6969.69.....I never understood that.
