Duke and McKinnon were signed for two entirely different roles ....

I would argue that Duke Johnson could have gotten more now and would have gotten a similar contract in free agency even if he was coming off an injury. I don’t care, I am glad the team got a high quality player for very cheap.

Didn't think there was a chance that this happened, I was wrong. He's now the 8th highest paid RB in the league (based on avg/year), 10th on overall contract, and 11th based on guarantees (but the only one not on a 4 or 5 year deal).

For the record:
Hyde is 10th, 11th, and 16th, respectively
Chubb is 29th, 23rd, and 29th, respectively

We have 3 RBs all paid in the top 30 in the league. We're definitely committed to the run.

IMO, we couldn't have had a better deal for Duke

I thought Duke was going to get around $4.5 million per year w/a nice signing bonus. He got more than that. Good for him. I'm glad he is going to remain in Cleveland.

I thought it would take north of 6mil per to sign him. Win-win for both sides. Had a feeling Duke might have a chip on his shoulder and want to be "the man". Also thought the FO might undervalue him because of the two other horses in the stable and the knock that he can't shoulder the load 20+ times a game. This contract looks like the perfect meeting place. Excited to know he be in the locker room, in the community and on the field for 4 more years!

Was reading through the tweets, thought this was interesting...

that was always a complaint i never understood. Duke was the one of the players hue used correctly.

people forget that at least once a game, duke would be hobbled up over something. slow to get up, hit the wrong way, etc.

he's the kevin love of our offense.

Crow got 3 years for 12 million (6 million guaranteed)

So, Duke just slightly more

Why turn this in to a Hue thread?

I think Hue used Duke well. I would have liked to see him run more, but Duke was our Theo Reddick....running wasn't his role. Hue likes to throw the ball, and Duke was a perfect option as a primary or a check down.

Glad we have him the next 4 seasons.

That's rich coming from you.

But, I'm not making it a "Hue thread." I'm simply referencing how many times I read that Hue underutilized Duke.

Is there anyone on the roster who would be "next" to be extended? Maybe Josh Gordon near the end of the season?

He might be.

But this time next year, and based on how he plays this season, I think Ogbah could be a candidate. Shoebert too, perhaps. If Corey Coleman has a good year, the team will probably just pick up the fifth year option,

Also, Brien Boddy-Calhoun is going into his final year of his contract

The biggest thing he didn't get was the 100% or near 100% guaranteed money that guys like Ezekiel Elliot and Fournette got..

Salaries are always escalating, but I don't think Duke got a bad deal. He actually got a bit more than I thought he would. I was thinking around $4.5 per year.

So Something happens, Browns sign Duke Johnson to an extension.

So I can check back on DT'ers message board 300 times in a week if I wanted to but I wouldn't get the news that Duke Johnson had actually re signed.

Where did I find out? the 11:00 news, So I don't get it. There is just something missing, from there is no title change or update or flashing icon when the news finally happens.

Actually I love the deal because for him to earn that $$$ he is going to have to be a WR more than RB as there just isn't enough reps at RB for him to earn that $$$.

I have not held back on my opinion that he can become a top tier WR with RB skills after the catch, YAC with him in space will be EXCELLENT!

jmho - Another good job by Dorsey! not a No Brainer as many would think. Cause he definitely is looking at him to morph to WR. He would not give that much $$$ for the 3rd RB behind Hyde and Chubb...or regardless 1, 2, or 3 just not enough reps at RB to warrant an extension. WR here we come wink

This is exactly my line of thought and I was thinking about 4.5 mil a year as well.

I don't think we overpaid and I don't think we underpaid. I don't think Duke is a primary back, but I think that we can play him every down if we use him right. In the E/P system that Haley uses, it's easy to convert a RB into another WR on any play that you want. His production will run hot and cold depending on the opponent and the game plan, but when it's hot it will be really hot. The better the defense, the better that he will do because he is a mismatch against most LB's or SS's on passing plays and will beat most DE's to the edge on running plays. If Hyde and Chubb can bring enough power to the running game, he will have a few mile long draws as well.

I even love that it's a 3 year deal and not longer. Duke is one of those auxiliary weapons that is only going to work well when the rest of the offense is clicking. I think that he will look really good this year and Taylor will use him a lot as an outlet. I think Baker won't be making that 3rd or 4th read read as much next year focusing on the more basic stuff being a rookie. So we'll get a peak of Duke this year with a decent QB and a good peak at Baker next year and how we think he'll progress and be able to see if Duke is going to be the useful weapon that I think he'll be and if the system will be in place to support him.

If all works well, Duke will see a system and team that he wants to play for and won't ask for record money to stay here. If all doesn't work well, we didn't sign him to money that we'll regret later when we failed to build a team around him.

Duke Johnson on his 2 fave Browns rookie so far, his extension and expectations for '18

Updated 9:20 PM; Posted 7:07 PM

https://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2018/06/duke_johnson_extension.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Hope always springs eternal for Duke Johnson at this time of year. But fresh off signing his $15.6 million contract extension Friday, he's even more optimistic than usual about the Browns in 2018.

"I truly believe if we can stay healthy and commit and follow our quarterback Tyrod (Taylor), and going into game one, I really believe this is a different look and different team," he told Sirius XM NFL Radio's Mark Dominik and Bruce Murray on Friday. "I've been part of one win in the last two seasons. This is the time of year when everyone likes to say 'we look better, we're different' but I can honestly say that it should be different."

He cited the new talent GM John Dorsey has added to the team in the offseason.

"We see the talent that we have and things we can do come this season if we just stick to it (and) everyone stays healthy," he said. "We see the things that Tyrod was able to do in Buffalo and we see what Jarvis (Landry) has done since he's been in the league. So we're just excited for bringing guys on this offense that can help us make plays and score more points and win more games."

Here are other highlights from Johnson's interview:

On his extension, including $7.74 million guaranteed

"It's a big relief for me. ... At the end of the day I still have to go out and perform but just to get it behind us and just to get us as an organization more focused on football and not contracts, and disputes, or things like that, we're just focused on the main common goal and that's winning."

On his two favorite rookies

"I think Denzel (Ward) will be one of the best corners in this league when his time comes. ... Him and Nick Chubb, because they both are kind of not big talkers. They just come to work every day and grind and make sure they know what they're doing and come about work as a true professional and not like a rookie."

On the three running backs getting touches

"The decision I made was long before we had Carlos Hyde or long before we even had Nick Chubb. My decision to stay in Cleveland was kind of decided as soon as the season was over. I know Cleveland is the place that I want to be, especially with the guys on the team now and the guys that I had before.

"I believe in (offensive coordinator Todd) Haley's plan and his offense and he's going to give everybody their touches the best that he can. But at the end of the day, whether we get touches or not, it's about winning."

On what he did on draft night

"My priorities were more focused on The Avengers that night, so I definitely wasn't watching the draft. ... Not too many people had us drafting this combination of guys in the first round. It was definitely different ... but looking at the guys that John Dorsey and his staff have brought in already to help this team, we trust and that they know what's best for us and what's best for this organization."

On how he's persevered through four victories in three seasons

"Every day, every game is a job interview for me. I don't look at it as counting days until we go home. I look at it as another opportunity to prove to my organization and the other 31 teams that I can play football and play at a high level. I just don't believe in quitting."

great interview by Duke ... he's a great example and leader IMO

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I’ve never been even close to this optomistic ... we could be seeing the foundation of something special being built here ... we still have some holes ... but we may see a merging foundation this year of something that could turn into something special ...

Dorsey takes shots on bad character guys that fall in the draft and he did it again this year with Calloway (a shot i’m Fine with) and then he loaded up with some real bueats with the UDFA’s ...

With that said ... we’ve heard nothing but good things about 3 of the first 4 picks .. they seem to be working there asses off and keeping there mouths shut and just learning and working ... and it sounds like with Duke, Landry, Tyrod and dare I say Josh they have some GREAT EXAMPLES to follow ....

We still have a ways to go .... but we have SOME TALENT that seems to work hard and they all have chips on their shoulders for whatever reason ... and hopefully we will see just a snippet of whats about to come in the next few years ...

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

According to this, Duke's annual salary now makes him the 7th highest paid running back in the NFL.. Is he the 7th best RB in the NFL? Does he deserve to be paid like Fournette? McCoy? Le'Veon Bell?

The biggest thing he didn't get was the 100% or near 100% guaranteed money that guys like Ezekiel Elliot and Fournette got..

Joe Banner thinks Browns ripped off Duke Johnson in new contract

Former Cleveland Browns executive Joe Banner is not a fan of the contract extension Duke Johnson signed with the team on Thursday. Cleveland’s CEO in 2012-13 thinks the team dramatically shortchanged the veteran running back with the 3-year, $15.6 million extension.

Here’s what Banner, now a law professor at Villanova University, offered on Johnson’s deal:

If Johnson’s contract is what’s reported it’s absolutely terrible deal for the player. He accepts being a 3rd string RB, & he is very talented. It’s also just before some deals that are going to completely reset RB market, & it’s millions less than McKinnon got & Johnson is better

The flip side, of course, is that it’s a great value for the Browns. Locking up one of the best receiving backs in the NFL for a below-market deal and keeping intact the stacked depth at running back is a strong move by Cleveland. It seems Banner can’t bring himself to saying anything nice about the team that unceremoniously dumped him after less than two years.

It’s also important to note Johnson did not have to sign the deal. He could easily have waited to become an unrestricted free agent but chose to remain in Cleveland for a deal he felt was fair.
