Pathetic.
They do it to continue the divide and stifle discussion.

They also find NAZI's under every rock. notallthere

Did you read these articles? NOPE. You know how I know? You would be gloating that you were right. AND I'm the one stifling discussions. And I don't have to look under a rock to find Russians or Nazis; in Trump world they are EVERYWHERE. You couldn't throw a rock and not hit one.

Correction, it is Socialist horsecrap psychobabble.

He quotes a comedian at least three times. Uses an extremely low frequency event, suicide, to attempt to prove a point about the entire population of the country. Attempts to imply that ALL, as compared to a small percentage, of poor southern whites during slavery were overseers and plantation managers.

Virtually zero useful information, few hard facts, lots of made of fantasies.

Nice try when he says that anybody who doesn't agree is a victim of his theory, unsupportable contention.

Largely a waste of time other than to see what the left is buying into these days, but nothing new here.

Thanks for posting this. I haven't gotten all the way through it, but it's interesting.

I'm appalled [as usual] w/some of the replies from both sides on this matter. In this particular thread, it's the conservatives who are the most disgusting.

Moving on............for a long time, I have truly believed that there are certain groups that want to keep racism alive, not because they are so racist, but instead because they know that we are much easier to control if we keep hating on each other.

Do you really think that they want poor and middle class America to unite? I am a firm believer in education and I wish that more people would embrace education enough to understand when they are being sacrificed like pawns in a game of chess.

One anecdote before I leave...........did you know that during the era of Reconstruction, that a white man would be jailed and a black man would be whipped in public if the white man tried to educate the black man? What does that tell you? Keep them ignorant and keep them from working together. Why? They are much easier to control.

Wise up, people!

Fascinating read OCD, thanks for sharing... I will share this with my kids and many others who I think will read it in the context in which it was intended. It contains too many truisms for me to copy/paste them here and address them all.

It is ironic that this thread immediately devolved into a "Democrat vs Republican" thing as to who is really to blame when that is not the intent of the article at all... in fact, it goes against the very nature of the article is trying to say...

I will briefly pat myself on the back because it was just a couple days ago that I made a very lengthy post which touched on many of the issues in this article, specifically about all of the intellectual capital that we squandered over the last 400-500 years by treating a significant portion of the population as unworthy of education or opportunity.. So, yes, had we never sought to subjugate races, genders, and classes of people, I probably would have my damn flying jet car by now...

So we can continue to bicker about who started it (or more specifically, which political party started it) or advanced it 30 years ago or 100 years ago or 250 years ago... I will not reduce myself to participating in such an argument because it really doesn't matter. The simple fact is, we are where we are because of it.. and I don't care if you have a D, an R, or an I behind your name, if you are a decent person, you will stop bickering and blaming... and you will stand up to fight it and fix it...

This is interesting due to how incorrect it all is. The author isn't female, she doesn't quote the same comedian, but different ones. It's not socialist. Quite frankly, I don't even believe in all of it, especially when she tries to talk about racism in a worldy sense. Racism does exist outside of America and even in countries where White People do not make up the majority. But this is a lot of reconstruction nonsense.

First of all, slave patrols weren't operated by just poor southerners. This is a reconstruction myth that tries to frame slavery around economics and not race. Slave patrollers are about as poor modern day cops. It also ignores that many State Militias ran slave patrols before the Civil War. It also ignores how most men during the Civil War either worked as a slave patroller or a Confederate soldier.

Also, suicide in the white male community is a cultural phenomenon and they do blame their lack of social standing for this reason. It's also one of the reasons why people like Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin can build such strong followings. They both talk about the white male's social position quite a bit.

While I hate circular reasoning, her case that people who don't agree with her are victims of the culture, it does sort of ring true in your case, does it not?

that was one part that I disagree with as well.. the author does seem to imply that racism started in the 1600s... maybe I'm reading that wrong.. but racism has been around in many forms and on many continents since the dawn of time. Now if the argument is that is when euro-centric white racism started, which was then spread all over the world, that I might get behind

I believe the 1600 date was intended to be the time that racism was used to create the 'white' label.

For CHS and others who do not understand how numbers work, and what words mean:

The gender of the author is meaningless in this context.

Quoting a comedian is not an accurate source of information. Louis CK is quoted at least twice, and Chris Rock at least once. That is quoting a comedian at least three times. I did not state or imply whether or not it was one comedian, or several, because it is not relevant. Do you think diversity of comic input is important?

Next, I did not say that ALL slave patrols, or any white jobs associated with slavery, were all poor white southerners. What I said, countering the article, was that not ALL poor white southerners were involved in jobs related to slavery. In an example you may be able to comprehend, all thumbs are fingers, but not all fingers are thumbs.

Now, to say that most men, IN THE SOUTH, were either slave patrollers or in the confederate military, would be essentially correct as every available able-bodied male 16-60 was conscripted for the army, leave off the slave patroller clause and you have a more accurate statement. Makes up a meaninglessly small percentage of the total.

As for the suicides, it simply does not happen in large enough numbers to draw any conclusions from regarding the entire white male population. Now, if you want to discuss how women attempt suicide roughly 3 times as often as men, but far more men die because they choose more effective methods and are more determined to carry them out, these differences involve the total population of suicides and attempts, not the total population of individuals. The more general gender-related differences can be extrapolated to the whole population thru numerous comparisons which support the overall contention. The article states no additional supporting evidence for its conclusion.

The mentioned "guns, germs, and steel" is an example of a concept supported with numerous factual data, hard evidence, and virtually zero pseudo-intellectual psychobabble. It does not play the tune leftists want to hear and therefore will receive zero attention and discussion here.

The article repeatedly harps on class distinctions and blames nearly all problems on upper-class manipulation of the lower classes, in an organized, coordinated and unified effort. A simpler explanation is that an 800 pound gorilla sits wherever he wants to. That is not class warfare, it is simply the way the world works.

The gender is meaningless, but for you to bring it up so many times just shows how badly you misread the piece.

Also, I'm sure a self-taught man, such as yourself, would understand that 'a comedian' is a singular noun and DOES imply one as all singular nouns do. Again, your misreading of the article has trickled down to even the most worthless of details. I'm not sure why you want to continue harping on these issues.

Do you think that slave patrolling was a 9-5 job with health benefits and a 401k? You do realize that during colonial and antebellum times people had multiple jobs, including protecting their community. Again, you're doing this Reconstruction Southern nonsense that frames the discussion around economics and not race. It's nonsense, not based in facts or evidence and is Dixie propaganda at its core. You are not too rich or poor to protect your community, which is why a few police departments can track their founding back to slave patrols. Also, the whole point was that the state military and militias were the slave patrollers. So, even if I were to leave off the clause, they would still be slave patrollers. Nor were all of them conscripted, conscription happened only during the Civil War in most Southern States. That ignores the 90+ years that they were part of the United States, and the other years when they were colonies.

Agreed, it's hard to tell what white men are feeling just based on their suicide rates. However, Ben Shaprio, Jordan Peterson, Chalres Murphy, and Dave Rubin have all become big hits among this crowd and frequently talk about how the white male is losing their metaphorical seat at the table. When the President was black you could see 40 and Vambo saying the same thing. I'm sure you even agree with that premise.

Also, "Guns, Germs and Steel" was literally brought up by a leftist. I can't say that I'm surprised that you misread another thing. You got that George Costanza vision, where everything you do is wrong. Also, what does it have to do with the discussion at hand?

Ummm, I did not bring up the author's gender, YOU DID, I referenced it ONCE, in response to your statement.

Self-taught? Well, to an extent, yes, but all of my college professors would disagree with your contention, and also, each reference, individually, was to "a comedian", there are three such references to "a comedian", at no point was there any statement such as "multiple comedians say THIS". A plural pronoun is made up of multiple individual pronouns. Your contention was incorrect, mine was accurate, further evidence is provided by your statement that I referenced gender multiple times, when I only referenced it ONCE, in response to YOU bringing it up. As I said, it is irrelevant, however, noting your inability to count is interesting.

Are you aware that an inability to distinguish between small numbers, such as you have repeatedly displayed, is one of the primary clinical tests to classify someone's mental capabilities as that of a low-grade moron?

Membership in the Confederate military only happened during the war, the constraint was applied by YOU, not me.

The article's contention was that ALL, or nearly ALL, of poor white southerners worked in the slave industry in some capacity, this is not at all accurate. Also, to separate slavery from the economic factors surrounding it is just tremendously ignorant. Both racism and economics were factors, but if nobody was making a buck on the deal, there would have been a lot less of it.

Just because a bunch of people talk about a thing does not make it true. Accuracy of data is not a popularity contest.

Unlike you, I misread virtually nothing, nor do I believe that the politics of a person posting a link are the sole defining characteristic of the concept presented in the link. It was posted in this thread, it is a well-made, factual presentation, and it is relevant to both the overall subject, and as a comparison of fact-based rather than purely opinion-based articles.

I'm glad that college education payed off, but I wish they taught you more than just the word "evidence". Maybe they should've taught you that the plural of "comedian" is "comedians". Are you sure you really want to be harping on this and how many times you misgendered the author? And are you trying to call me a moron while arguing that "a comedian" is plural? This seems like really petty debates to show off your intellectual muscle.

You realize that states were part of the United States of America before they were Confederate States and when I say "many State Militias ran slave patrols before the Civil War." it does mean BEFORE the Civil War. I know that might be a hard concept from a Hooked on Phonics graduate, but you should really learn the concept of "before". I only stated the Confederate numbers to you to disprove your conspiracy theory that slave patrolling was an extremely small thing. Again, you have not been able to disprove this, instead trying to score insults based on your misunderstandings.

Yes, economics does account for slavery, but it does not account for all slavery. Race was the driving factor behind slavery, which is why you never hear of an Irish or Italian slave during the 1850's. To focus the conversation primarily on economics, is disingenuous, which may as well be your middle name.

You misread virtually everything. You said that no leftist would mention GGS, I then showed you how a leftist was talking about GGS. Also, nothing in GGS really counters what the Medium articles said. In fact, I think Jared Diamond would agree with the Medium article based on his past few books. I'm sure you're also familiar with Collapse and The World Until Yesteryear.

I'll start with English 100, that is remedial level, just for you. In the article, there is NO STATEMENT which refers to multiple comedians. There are MULTIPLE statements which refer to ONE comedian. The plural is "references", not comedians, the author at no time quoted multiple comedians in the same statement, she made several statements quoting an individual comedian. "quoted a comedian several times" is both factually and grammatically correct. As for gender, I used "he", not as a definitive statement, but as the standard, established pronoun to use when gender is uncertain, since I did not check because I do not consider it relevant, because it isn't.

Next, reading comprehension. The statement I made, was countering the authors contention that ALL, or nearly ALL, poor white southerners were involved in working with the slave trade in some way. I stated that this is not true, nothing you have said counters this contention. The fact that slave patrols existed does not mean every poor white worked on them, or as overseers or plantation managers, which the article referenced but you keep ignoring. At no point did I state or imply that there were few slave patrols, or that few poor whites were involved in this activity. I DID state that the percentage of the overall poor white population participating in this endeavor was nowhere the near-total inclusion that the article implied.

I made no insult, I related facts. You have repeatedly demonstrated an inability to differentiate between small numbers. That is a fact. The inability to differentiate between small numbers is an indicator to the mental capabilities of a low-grade moron. That is also a fact. Make of it what you will.

The statement "both racism and economics were factors" does not indicate either one as primary. Irish and Italians were in fact used as slaves, both in this country and their home areas. You might want to read up on some English and Roman history.

I did not state no leftist would mention GGS but I DID state they would not discuss it, and they have not. The reason they won't is because it does not scream "RACISM" every 5 seconds. It certainly does counter the article as it lays out in great detail that the primacy of certain ethnic groups is based on accidents of geography, weather, animal species distribution, and random chance, and has nothing to do with race or racism.

Sonny, I have Destroyed both contract and divorce attorneys in court, based solely on my ability to both read and comprehend. You, on the other hand, have repeatedly failed to understand statements in clear English.

Yes, I can see how some would promote they support people who are closing voting places in poor black neighborhoods in the south making it harder for the poor to vote. However, if I lived there and saw this in action, it would probably make that very hard for me to do.

Hmmm , never knew that.

Serious question here , because I honestly dont know the answer. But has there ever been anything that gave us an idea of where on the earth Adam and Eve, the Garden of Eden etc were?

Just came here to say I love white people, and all ethnicities.

I just don’t like racist white people. Or other racist ethnicities.

But you white people do need to cool it with the kale smoothies and gluten free ice cream. Crap has gotten completely out of control.

Is gluten free ice cream even a thing? Ice cream is usually made from dairy; gluten comes from wheat or other grains. Ice cream should be gluten free by default. all well.

It’s certainly a thing. Check out Whole Foods or a major grocery chain. You’ll be so offended you’ll want to call the cops for harassment.

I actually wanted to try to discuss this with you a little further. I feel there's some people open to honest discussion and some who aren't. So let's get back to what you said about poor people voting Republican and how your dad told you that would be in their best interest.

Now for the sake of discussion, let's not quibble over whether that's correct or not. But rather let's look at the optics of why the Republican part makes that such a difficult thing to do for minorities and many of the poor. Now we can debate the merit of these things if you like, but the optics are terrible.

Not running sensible candidates against "the crazies". There are several candidates running under the Republican banner this year who are flat our racist, anti-Semitic and are not at all representative of Republicans in general. I understand that these people are running in places that the GOP has pretty much a zero percent chance of winning. That's the very reason some of them ran unopposed for the nomination. So from strictly a dollars and cents standpoint, the GOP investing money in these areas makes little sense.

But what cost does the GOP actually pay for that with the optics it provides to minorities and the poor? Why would you wish to support a party that let's themselves be represented that way? And then when "the crazies" kill a protestor by running them over with a car and a GOP president says there were some good people on their side? Again, the optics are terrible.

Closing poling places in minority and poor neighborhoods. Hundreds in the south alone have been closed in such neighborhoods. It's hard to switch people to your side when the optics certainly appear to them as though you don't want them to vote at all.

Minimum wage. Now I know the party line of "let the market dictate". Yet we saw what happened in the 1920's before unions and minimum wage were established. People can see what happens when you let industry go unchecked. In the past 30 years or so, minimum wage has stagnated when compared to the cost of living. When I was a kid I had a LOT more buying power with minimum wage than people do now. People know this. Sure you build upwards from minimum wage. But when your staring with far less buying power at minimum wage, you're starting much further behind to begin with. It would take someone a long time to even get to the same buying power they had at minimum wage 30 years ago.

Now I'm not talking about what some call a living wage. I'm talking about the fact that minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation. Going backwards is something people can feel and touch.

Now don't get me started on the left. lol You can't expect millions and millions of people coming into your country illegally working for dirt cheap wages to help cause wages to rise. People who believe that are just as guilty of shooting themselves in the butt.

Let's look at CEO's. In 1978 CEO's made about 30 times the typical workers salary. By 2016 that average went up to 286 times as much as the average workers salary. Since 1978, when adjusted for inflation, the average workers salary has increased by 11.8%.

Once again, rather than trying to place blame, on the surface, it's the Dems who oppose these things and advocate for unions and a better minimum wage while the GOP advocates that businesses and the market alone dictate everything.

Those are simply terrible optics for a party who feels the poor and minorities would be better off voting for them.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Has a professional told you that?

For the record, I love you all. From the whitest of milky white to the blackest of blue black, and everything in between.

I feel the exact same way Peen. I have known you for a very long time. We may not always agree but that doesn't change anything.

I have been set in my ways for a lot longer than we have known each other, and we have been friends both on the boards and in person for near 20 years now.
