Not to mention that Duke adds injury protection right away, with his guarantees and signing bonus. Also, the RB market hit a bit of an upswing this season, so maybe it drops again next year. Who knows?
I think that the Browns got a solid deal, as I had a potential deal between $5 million to $6 million/year, and he for an average of $5.2 million. That puts him in the top 10 in the NFL at RB.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Does Banner realize that Duke didn’t have to sign the contract? Duke must not feel like he was ripped off
Not feeling like you are ripped off and not being ripped off are not the same thing.
Also, ripped off is probably not the best phrase to use when someone is getting a pretty big raise. But I think it’s safe to say Duke Johnson left money on the table. In the end, that’s a good thing for the team.
1. When the Browns signed free agent Carlos Hyde and then drafted Nick Chubb in the second round, I wondered if adding two notable running backs meant doubts about re-signing Duke Johnson.
2. Johnson led the Browns with 74 receptions and is a premier pass-catching back. He also rushed for 348 yards and a 4.2 average. He is a very valuable player, in no small part to never missing a game in his 3-year pro career.
3. Johnson would have been an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2018 season. Instead, they signed Johnson to a 3-year, $15.6 million deal. He received a $5 million signing bonus and $7.7 million is guaranteed.
4. The Browns are investing big money in the running back position. Hyde signed a 3-year, $15.2 million deal with $5 million guaranteed. That's according to overthecap.com, my favorite spot for NFL contract information.
5. Hyde received a $3.5 million signing bonus. So the Browns have paid $8 million in bonus money to Johnson and Hyde this season.
6. A running back from Georgia, Chubb was the No. 35 pick in the draft. In 2017, the No. 35 pick was Malik McDonald. He signed a 4-year, $6.9 million deal with Seattle - including a $3.1 million bonus.
7. So let's give Chubb at least $3 million as a signing bonus, and that runs the total to $11 million in bonus money for Hyde, Johnson and Chubb.
8. That said, the Browns had better run the ball well. Before the Johnson signing, overthecap.com reported the Browns still had $68 million in salary cap room - the most in the NFL.
Banner is very sharp when it comes to the financial side of football, so I respect his opinions. However, I have to disagree w/him on Duke's deal.
I agree. I don't think the money is out of line on the low side, and Joe doesn't know that Duke is going to be the 3rd string back. He doesn't know what Hue and Haley have planned.
I see it as Chubb and Hyde splitting snaps. I doubt we see both of them on the field at the same time very often. Duke will probably get more snaps then either of of them..
I don't even see Duke as the #2 back. To me it is more like 1A and 1B.
I have heard that the guys have been viewing a lot of Steeler tape. Haley is telling guys to watch various players because he sees them as playing the same role some player on the Steelers played. Maybe Duke liked what he was told and saw and wanted to be a part of that.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
I’ve never been even close to this optomistic ... we could be seeing the foundation of something special being built here ... we still have some holes ... but we may see a merging foundation this year of something that could turn into something special ...
Dorsey takes shots on bad character guys that fall in the draft and he did it again this year with Calloway (a shot i’m Fine with) and then he loaded up with some real bueats with the UDFA’s ...
With that said ... we’ve heard nothing but good things about 3 of the first 4 picks .. they seem to be working there asses off and keeping there mouths shut and just learning and working ... and it sounds like with Duke, Landry, Tyrod and dare I say Josh they have some GREAT EXAMPLES to follow ....
We still have a ways to go .... but we have SOME TALENT that seems to work hard and they all have chips on their shoulders for whatever reason ... and hopefully we will see just a snippet of whats about to come in the next few years ...
I hear you my friend. I tend to give the benefit of the doubt but we do check off the boxes this year. I am really excited about the O with TT and Landy as additions. Hyde is at least as good as Crow and I think Chubb can be a really good back.
Haley is a big addition. This isn't to bash Hue, Vers. I think Haley is going to complement Hue where Hue can now function as the head coach and not split time being a coordinator. I think we will run the ball a lot more.
When we are in those 3rd and 4 situations, we now have 2 really good short yard options in Landry and Duke. Having Gordon back and adding Calloway is going to stretch the field deep.
I see good things.
On D, it is still up in the air as to what the defensive backfield can do, but it does look like we will do a much better job back there. If we can do that, our pass rush is going to be pretty solid if not really good.
I think it is going to be a fun year.
Dorsey came in to a pretty good situation and he has to this point has done a tremendous job with the draft picks and bringing in some veterans who still have tread on the tires.
It's going to be fun to watch this build over the next few years.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I don't know... if Duke and his agent thought he'd get more, surely they'd just wait until the season end. It obviously took a long time to get a deal done, so if both sides are happy... then who cares?
An argument not worth arguing, let's talk about how Duke is going to be used by Todd. I'd rather hear about that lol.
One can read that interview and see references to winning, and Haley and say read between the lines about dumping Hue, if one wants to.
Look, somebody can wishful think that Tyrod Taylor is going to overachieve and Mayfield is going to take the gaspipe but it's yet to be seen.
And even if Mayfield (who is going to be great,) (wishful thinking), doesn't pan out, it's not going to make Tyrod Taylor any better than what he is as a QB.
I don't recall reading bout Tyrod meeting with Kosar after his signing, but Mayfield did after the draft.
Man to Man, how many times if the Browns played vs Tyrod Taylor over his career in Buffalo or Balt.
How many times would Vers, going into that game, not think, "well, we've got a shot, because Tyrod isn't really that dangerous as a qb."
I don't know, I know that's at least what I always thought.
Tyrod might be a safe, Qb which refuses to throw(some), and keeps some drives alive, and get's td's on the ground ,
but He hasn't thrown more than 20 td passes in a season in his career yet, so if he is going to get longterm success in Cleveland, some things have to happen.
Tyrod's got to get more passing production. and or Mayfields got to bust. and or The Browns have to not replace Tyrod (FA, Trade, Draft) with somebody who actually can get more passing production.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.
Former Cleveland Browns executive Joe Banner is not a fan of the contract extension Duke Johnson signed with the team on Thursday. Cleveland’s CEO in 2012-13 thinks the team dramatically shortchanged the veteran running back with the 3-year, $15.6 million extension.
Here’s what Banner, now a law professor at Villanova University, offered on Johnson’s deal:
Joe Banner ✔ @JoeBanner13 If Johnson’s contract is what’s reported it’s absolutely terrible deal for the player. He accepts being a 3rd string RB, & he is very talented. It’s also just before some deals that are going to completely reset RB market, & it’s millions less than McKinnon got & Johnson is better
4:47 PM - Jun 7, 2018 51 45 people are talking about this Twitter Ads info and privacy The flip side, of course, is that it’s a great value for the Browns. Locking up one of the best receiving backs in the NFL for a below-market deal and keeping intact the stacked depth at running back is a strong move by Cleveland. It seems Banner can’t bring himself to saying anything nice about the team that unceremoniously dumped him after less than two years.
It’s also important to note Johnson did not have to sign the deal. He could easily have waited to become an unrestricted free agent but chose to remain in Cleveland for a deal he felt was fair.
I would agree. We got a steal with Duke. He's worth more than what he got paid. I guess he really wanted to stay... He's our best and smartest offensive player. That goes a long way.
Hes not even close to our best offensive player anymore .. he more than likely isn’t even our best RB right now ...
I LOVE Duke ... but some of u think he is worth way more than he is ... he got a GREAT CONTRACT for a guy in what may end up being a 3 headed monster in the backfield ...
Our best offensive player ... ... it ain’t 2017 no more ...

Hes our best , most proven player. At least based on what they have done for us. The others are nothing but speculation on what they COULD do
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG
Jarvis Landry has been to multiple Pro Bowls and has caught a ton of balls in the NFL. He has perhaps the best hands in the entire NFL. If not, he is right up there. I love Duke, but I think Landry is more proven.

SO you didnt read what I said , did you ? I said what they have done for us . Jarvis has done nothing , for us yet. Right now hos production for this season is purely speculation.

Are u for real ... Landry going to the pro bowl the last two years doesn't mean anything cause he didnt do it with us ... ...
Come on dawg ... if thats how u feel .... thats your perogative and not a discussion i care to engage in ...
Good question Vers ...
Of course it means something, it means we have great hopes that he will continue to do that for us. Right now that is speculation. Duke Johnson has been our best offensive player the past couple seasons for us. Hopefully adding other weapons around him will make them all even better .
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG
I think Duke will fit in nicely as a complementary piece now .. With Landry and Gordon (and hopefully Njoku), Duke can really be change of pace/depth threat
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
If Duke ends up being our best O player this year i will be VERY VERY DISSAPOINTED ... ...
And thats not a slam on Duke .. I LOVE DUKE and am thrilled we inked him ... we agree there ...
Well that could be bad or good if Duke is our best offensive player this year. If JG and Landry put up huge numbers and Duke is still our best offensive player then that would be great
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG
Oh man ... u have no idea how this pains me to say but man ...
Gordon is just a freak and as much as i love Landry cause he CATCHES THE F’N BALL ...
Josh appears to be committed ... and he can just do things other humans can’t ... so i gotta go with him ...
Whose yours ...
It's Landry. I think Josh has more physical talent, but he is not a good route runner. He has inconsistent hands and inconsistent effort. He has had the drug suspensions.
I like guys I can count on and I believe that Jarvis is a guy you can count on every day of the week.
I think Myles and Ward can challenge him for the top spot eventually, but right now, I would have to say that Landry is our best player.
Perhaps you didn't read the question correctly? That would be a huge surprise. The question was who is our best player.
My answer is Jarvis Landry. You wanna argue w/that or do you wanna play your dumb-ass games?
You want to play your dumb ass games? I replied and made a statement on what Diam said. You replied to me and said what I said was not true Then give some answer that had nothing to do with what I said that you claimed was not true.
Not my fault you cant read and comprehend
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG
I was saying Josh is going ot have the best year this year ... u think Landry is ... he could ...
Damm ... dude ... theres some IFS in here ... but think about this ...
- we know who Landry is ... - we know what Josh could be and he appears to hopefully not be self destructing and actually working ... - we got Duke and Hyde and then the rookie who is an unknown at this point ... - imagine if Njoku takes the leap many 2nd year guys do ...
Crap bro ... just with J & J we have a TON OF TALENT ...
This could be really exciting if we don’t have to keep all the others in to help with the tackles ... *L* ...
If Duke ends up being our best O player this year i will be VERY VERY DISSAPOINTED ... ...

I thought u were saying who would have the best year this year ...
I would say Landry is the best player for the reasons u stated ... he’s accountable ... i had a real tough time saying Josh ... could u tell ... *L* ...
Long term ... i think it could be Myles ... hes a physical freak like Josh with a much better head on his shoulders ... that Gumby thing is INCREDIBLE ... never seen anything like it ... Haley comes the closest in my memory but no where’s near as gumbish as Myles ... *L* ...
This is BY FAR the best time we’ve ever had talking about who could be our best player and having so many GOOD CHOICES ... actually its the first convo we’ve ever had like this ... *L* ...
Alright, despite Kong's persistence in trying to start a fight.............here is what I was using as the base question:
Quote:
He's our best and smartest offensive player. That goes a long way.
Obviously, we all have our opinions, but I think Landry is that guy. We can make projections. And that is all good. I'm enjoying my conversation w/you. Now, if only Kong would go away.
I guess I was a bit wrong because I added Myles and Ward and they are part of the defense and that is projecting.
So.....here is my bottom line. As of right now, I believe that Jarvis Landry is our best player.
Projecting, I think our best player could come from this group:
Landry Myles Ward Gordon
That's pretty much in order.........of course, it's only my opinion.
In all reality, Myles Garrett should be our best player starting pretty soon. Whether or not that will happen remains to be seen.
Landry is a really good player. Gordon has more upside, but obviously more bust potential.
Also, Mayfield should be a HIGH talent as well within the next 18 months; I mean, he was the #1 pick after all. Same goes with Ward.
