How much does it cost to house, feed, and contain the average prisoner per year? I heard about $80k per inmate. In lieu of the recent recent kardashian plea to release a non violent offender.

How many imprisoned are for non violent, drug related offenses? I would release a good portion of those people early, and bring back the chain gang. I hear tUSA is in need of transportation, infrastructure repair.

The Vera Institute of Justice released a study in 2012 that found the aggregate cost of prisons in 2010 in the 40 states that participated was $39 billion.

The annual average taxpayer cost in these states was $31,286 per inmate.

New York State was the most expensive, with an average cost of $60,000 per prison inmate.

https://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/24/nyreg...study-says.html

According to the Bureau of Prisons, there are 207,847 people incarcerated in federal prisons. Roughly half (48.6 percent) are in for drug offenses. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are 1,358,875 people in state prisons. Of them, 16 percent have a drug crime as their most serious offense. There were also 744,600 inmates in county and city jails. (The BOP data is current as of July 16. From BJS, the latest jail statistics are from midyear 2014, and the latest prison statistics from year-end 2013.) That’s an incarceration rate of about 725 people per 100,000 population.

There’s a lot to unpack in this thread.

For instance, despite being called the land of the free, we own about 25%of the words prison population. Yes, despite China being multiple times larger than our population, we own way more of the prison population than even they do.

Do we have THAT many bad people in this country? Or do we often jail people for the dumbest things? We have some of the most archaic and draconian laws on our books, especially dealing with drug offenses. We have some of the most heavy handed judges in the world, and then combine with the FACT that our ex cons Are STILL punished after serving their time.

You do realize if you lived in China, you would either:

1) Have to give up some of your ""hobbies", or
2) Spend a lot of time in prison.

In China, you would quickly be discovered to be a "pot head" and sent away.

We have a lot of people in prison because we have a lot of freedoms.

We have a lot more "bad people" because they have the freedom to be bad - up to a point.

the point of bringing up china was about the overall prison population, not drug related prisoners compared to chinese drug related prisoners.

please tell Diam 0+0=0 only if you didn't miss the overall point of mentioning china.

my post was overall, not just specifically drug related.

I love how dumb their thoughts can be. "In China, it is illegal to smoke weed and they will throw you in prison. In America the same thing happens to a greater extent and that is why we have freedom."

What's really wack is...

3.5 billion dollars per year enforcing marijuana laws

Millions incarcerated for MJ

Black men 3.73 times more likely to be incarcerated for MJ

88% of arrests are for simply "having" MJ

Almost any other country in the free world would have (and already has) decriminalized marijuana possession if the numbers painted this kind of picture. We can't because the elite buy elections... and build prisons. We just continue to prop up the age-old narrative of bad-black-man-drug-pusher-criminal-menace-to-society.

That’s kind of my point, instead of having tax payers pay, to babysit nonviolent, smaller amount of drug possessors. Why not have them give back to society?

The transportation infrastructure in America is in need of maintenance and repair. The way I see it, we can alleviate a burden on taxpayers, let inmates work for their freedom, while giving back to the community.

Not sure about chain gangs...Educate or rehabilitate seems more helpful for the non violent offenders.

There are already chain gangs. Maybe not chained, but in my town I often drive past prisoner buses where they are picking up trash on the side of the road.

Not sure about chain gangs...Educate or rehabilitate seems more helpful for the non violent offenders.

There are already chain gangs. Maybe not chained, but in my town I often drive past prisoner buses where they are picking up trash on the side of the road.

While that is true, I’m taliking about serious infrastructure. Add a lane to a highway, rebuild a bridge.

Better yet .... how about we have them go pick the fruit and do the farm work other americans won’t do so we don’t “need” illegals to do it ...

$80k to house a prisoner when the median household income to raise a family of 4 is $55k??? Someone is spreading propaganda to push an agenda.

Fresh off my week long vacation (Thanks2V), I thought I'd address your ridiculous and horrific idea of enslaving those who shouldn't be serving time anyway just to save you a few pennies in taxes. I'd say your white privilege has once again got in the way of any common sense you could have.

I'd bet you have no idea what chain gangs symbolize and what those who served on them went through. Imagine being chained like a dog and worked like a borrowed mule on trumped up charges, turned into slave labor by a corrupt government selling your services off to local elites to profit from.

You should be ashamed of yourself for promoting these things. The right wants to remove all protections and move backward to a time they perceive whites were kings... Being less than rich and white was no better then than now and if you actually studied a little history you would know that.

This is already being done in some places... Failure just like everything else that Trump and alt-right promote as good ideas.

I don't think he meant chain gangs in the true sense of the word but having nonviolent offenders do manual labor in place of serving a term in prison.

You know, in one of the threads we were discussing how people today fail to take responsibility for their own actions.
How they lack personal accountability.

Now here you come, blaming others for what you did to get suspended.

Classic.
Exactly what we were talking about.

The use of very descriptive adverbs and adjectives does not equal name calling. I'm very careful to not do that... BUT reading comprehension is an issue that seems to affect many on this board, some refs included.

So I took a bad rap, but whatever.

Why would you call me that? Is that my name? That's insinuating I have a disorder... NAME CALLING! wink but it's ok, I'm a big boy.

For instance, despite being called the land of the free, we own about 25%of the words prison population. Yes, despite China being multiple times larger than our population, we own way more of the prison population than even they do.

I don't know why bro.. but we are a country of excess.. for good and for bad... We have 4 of the 5 richest people in the world.. we have by a wide margin the largest military... we also have about the highest violent crime rate of developed countries.. the most people in prison...

I don't believe we have inherently bad people, I just keep questioning our culture... the values we are passing on, etc..

Wish I had a better answer.. simple fact is, I don't know..

one of the topics i'm currently researching is the history of how nations became states(countries) just for fun.

one of the ideas i wanted to expand on is how we as Americans never really take a step back and realize that we have been doing this for a whooping 243 years. just think about how many other countries have centuries upon centuries as people to progress their culture and what is now their modern government systems.

i think for a country like us coming up in this certain era of history, especially with regards to tech throughout the last century, has created this unrealistic idea of how fas society is supposed to progress, when in reality, it was always suppose to be at a moderate pace. but its creating conflict, nonetheless.

but back to the main point. our prison system, imo, somewhat reminds me of the system of justice in the middle ages. very harsh punishments for even the pettiest of crimes, public shame, executions, very religious based, and always trying to get coin out of the peasants.

and if you read up on who the pilgrims actually were, then you would see why i brought up the middle ages.

so when you look at european countries laws today, it certainly appears that in general, they are far less heavy handed on punishment than we are. but it probably has something to do with that they have been at it a lot longer than we have.

just my thought on what could be a reason for why our culture is the way it is. we're still toddlers.

With Puritanical roots for our morality and jurisprudence. We may have been spawned from the Magna Carta, but we drop big hammaz on those who buck the protocol.

I hate to speak for Buck but I don’t believe he is white. I know he is not a conservative.

I agree with this assessment of Buck.

I've read him for years. He's no FOXervative, by any stretch. I've found him to be a respectable, thoughtful poster who doesn't 'play on teams.'

OCD: You make valid points about chain gangs, and you may see this issue differently, BUT...
...You should get to know Buck, as well.

I've enjoyed reading his take on things here in PP, though he doesn't post nearly as often as TheUsualSuspects®. Frankly, I'd like to see him more often. I think you'd enjoy his thoughts too, once you get more than this snapshot of him in this thread.

My bad then, just how he reads to me in this thread. If he's minority and liberal... that makes his thoughts on this even worse imho. I expect this type of talk from the white right in here, not the left.

Thanks for pointing my mistake out though.

Me I prefer we just execute all violent offenders and be done with it. I don't support any jail time above 5 years. It's wastes taxpayer money and all it does is turn them into hardened criminals.

A guys pend 20 years in jail and is going to do what when he gets out? No one will hire him. He won't have current job skills. Most decent places to live will not accept his application. What choices will he even have to survive? Most of the time he will just cause a new crime, try to go out in a bang, or do some small crime to go back to where he can get three square meals a day and is generally safer than living on the streets.

The current system doesn't work.

You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

There it is....you gotta toe the line and be a cookie cutter member to be on the left...no independent thought allowed outside of the party lines no matter how off kilter they may be.....kinda cult-ish.
