Argentina looked like dead men walking in that second half.

3-0!
Iceland v Nigeria is now a crucial game for Argentina. They need Nigeria to win. But, with 4 goals conceded it isn't looking good for them.
Portland...2nd half of this game was great. Argentina were shut out, but it was full of tension and desperation, which allowed the game to really open up for Croatia. Great defense by the Croatians too!
Just busting chops. Glad you enjoyed the game.

If Iceland wins, that won't eliminate Argentina, but it would put Argentina in an almost impossible spot. They'd not only have to beat Nigeria, which they haven't shown they can do, but by 4-5 goals to advance past Iceland.
If Nigeria wins, that would be the easiest road for Argentina, assuming they can even beat Nigeria next week, which they might not be able to do.
If Iceland/Nigeria draw, which I think will happen, Iceland can still advance with a draw against Croatia even if Argentina beats Nigeria by a goal. And I'd think Croatia would help with a draw. Croatia has already won the group and knocking out Argentina only helps them down the line.
Big game.

Big game. Agreed. If Iceland win today and Argentina win next week it will all come down to goal differential between the two. Argentina fans will definitely be rooting for Nigeria today. Edit: That's also me assuming Iceland will lose to Croatia next week...

Hats off to Nigeria. They deserve their 3 points and now sitting in 2nd place in Group D. Next weeks games for Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland now have a lot of importance! Not only winning, but also goals scored/conceded can determine who moves on with Croatia.
Exciting!

..and it's great they're playing at the same time so each team will be trying their hardest AND scoreboard watching. Fun.

Unfortunately I missed the Serbia v Switzerland game. It looks like it was a thriller! Now, my man PortlandDawg...even you would have loved this one. Serbia scored in the 5th minute, Switzerland tied in the 52nd and then won the game in the 90th minute.

Switzerland's first goal was the best of the tournament so far, IMO at least...

What a goal by Kroos to keep Germany alive in the group.
15 seconds left in the match.

15 seconds left in the match. I think that game crashed Swedens internet. Was gaming online and 3 people in the group were in Sweden, as soon as that game ended their connection died.
It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

15 seconds left in the match. That makes their group VERY interesting. Mexico has 6points/Germany and Sweden now have 3 and SK have 0. Other than South Korea, game 3 just became massively important for all three teams!

South Korea is still technically alive too (barely).
They need Mexico to beat Sweden and have to beat Germany while having a better goal differential than both Sweden and Germany.
Germany could also lose and still make it through.
I think Mexico and Germany end up making it through.

It's halftime and England are up 5-0! If England keep scoring even a tie against Belgium will put them at the top of the table. That match is shaping up to be a giant!
Edit: England scored again!

Panama are in the WC because the USA couldn't beat them (nor Mexico, Costa Rica or Honduras). Watching this game must be just as humiliating for the US team as it is for Panama.
6-1. England and Belgium now tied at the top. England need to score again to get back to the top.

Panama scores its first goal in world cup history ... congrats to them
Pathetic for USA
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Belgium v England are now tied up and their game becomes even more interesting. If they finish with a draw it all comes down to "fair play differential" to separate who goes to the top vs 2nd place. Not sure how those stats & rules all work out. However, I don't think it will come to that.
EDIT: just did some research on how it is determined who tops the group IF England and Belgium tie on 6/28: "England top Group G as they have fewer yellow cards than Belgium. If they draw the final game it will go down to disciplinary records to decide who finishes first - and if that is level lots will be drawn."

I'm kind of hoping for a couple yellow cards for England in the next match. I'd love to see the TV coverage, analysis and breakdown of the lot-drawing.

Right now England lead +1 in terms of discipline. They have 2 YC while Belgium have 3. England are still a young team...if they end up walking out of their game against Belgium tied that in itself will be a massive accomplishment. If they win it would be huge. Probably their greatest win in years. Several pundits have Belgium going to the final.

In theory, Uruguay v Russia should be the most exciting game to watch today. They are both playing for more than the other teams on today's schedule. And, one would think Portugal will easily beat Iran.

Russia looked terrible. Granted, they were playing only 10 men, but still they were very uninspiring. Afternoon games were much better. Iran must be heartbroken. They had a chance to win it in the last minute, but whiffed.

Iran ALMOST had that. Wow! I was only half watching after the final whistle, I wasn't sure which Iranian guy was crying so much, wasn't sure if that was the guy that missed that last opportunity. Man, they should have scored there, but the guy can't beat himself up too much. It wasn't a tap-in, it was still a tough shot.
I would say though, I wouldn't have awarded the tying PK just prior. That was so slight and didn't affect anything. But hey, keep your arms down.
Tomorrow is the big day for me. I work with a lot of people in Argentina and they are on edge. Going to be crazy.

Tomorrow is the big day for me. I work with a lot of people in Argentina and they are on edge. Going to be crazy. I was doing work around the house and was popping in and out. I did see Portugal's goal, Ronaldo's PK miss and Iran convert on their PK. Right after that they had a massive chance...I agree it's never as easy as it looks, but on the world's biggest stage when it is win or go home...you HAVE to make that shot. Still, the Iranians should leave the WC with their heads held high. I heard on NPR that the Govt. has put forward actions to allow women into the stadiums (one of the many issues that the younger Iranians are currently protesting about). If so, that in itself is a huge result for the whole country. Argentina? As with Germany, I reckon they will find a way to win. If not, wow...what a shock that would be.

Well, there we go...we just saw our first scoreless tie. France v Denmark 0-0. Both teams knew they were through to the next round so rested, didn't go all out nor try to win. No different than an NFL team resting on their final game before the playoffs or not wanting to get hurt before the offseason. A shame for the fans who pay the big bucks to see the games, however.

Good goal for Argentina. Maradona was a great player, but what an idiot. The camera caught his hands once again being a cheat and poor sport. Bet he will blame it on god again.

Bye bye Germany! Wow. Who would have thought they wouldn't advance to the round of 16?
I am happy for Mexico to advance. Although they got destroyed today they played really well in their first two games. Hopefully they can re-group in the next round.

I got to watch both games at our company cafe with about 20 or so Mexican fans. What a tense day for them! Germany probably missed two dozen shots at goal, and then came apart at the end.
Everyone in Mexico is probably running out to buy a Kia today.

Heard about this today on a podcast. Thought all you hooligans might find it interesting.
https://www.google.com/amp/www.newsweek.com/mexico-winning-goal-germany-caused-artificial-earthquake-world-cup-celebration-980478%3famp=1
From the article... “Soccer fans took their reputation as a passionate community to a new level Sunday when an earthquake tracking agency in Mexico detected an “artificial earthquake” that it said could be linked to World Cup fan celebrations in Mexico.
“The #sismo detected in Mexico City originated artificially,” the agency tweeted, adding that the possible cause of the detection could be “massive jumps during the goal from the Mexico national soccer team.”“
