Absolutely. The 2-4-5 scheme is well worth testing the waters with all the talent we have there.

We still have a whole month (and more) until the season starts. High ankle sprains are not minor injuries, but he should be near ready when the season starts.

(I also believe Brantley got dinged up in the scrimmage today.)

Maybe it's time to give Johnathan Hankins a call?

He injured his thigh. Not supposed to be serious. As for Hankins, I'm all for it.

#Browns coach Hue Jackson said DT Trevon Coley has high ankle sprain. Hue called it a "super duper" one. Will miss time. Return for Week 1 would probably be best-case scenario.

CJ played his college ball here in Chattanooga, that's why you haven't heard of him.

He's a really good player and I am pulling for him

Tyrod Taylor, Jarvis Landry connect for 2 TDs, including a spectacular one, in scrimmageby Scott Petrak August 3, 2018

BEREA — Jarvis Landry reached behind him with his left hand, snatched the football like it was a tennis ball, spun away from safety Elijah Campbell, dismissed linebacker James Burgess with a shove and ran into the end zone.

Then the receiver fired the ball into the bleachers.

The offense and defense provided plenty of big plays during an intrasquad scrimmage Friday — including a touchdown and interception from No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield — but the Tyrod Taylor-to-Landry connection stood above the rest.

Two of the most significant offseason additions — and biggest reasons for hope of a quick turnaround — gave the sweltering fans plenty to smile about.

Taylor found Landry running open down the right seam for a 26-yard touchdown against the second-team defense. Taylor was 4-for-4 on the drive, connecting for 16 yards with tight end Darren Fells, 11 with receiver Corey Coleman and 21 to tight end David Njoku.

“He moved the team,” coach Hue Jackson said. “He made some plays down the field with the ball. He threw the ball around. Tyrod did some good things out there.”

“Everything you ask for from a starting quarterback,” Landry said.

The second touchdown from the starters came in a two-minute drill. Taylor threw 22 yards to Duke Johnson on an in route, then threw to Landry down the right seam for the spectacular 36-yard score that qualified as the play of the day.

“He does it every day,” Jackson said. “If the ball is anywhere around him, there is a good chance that he is going to come up with it.”

Is there any catch he can’t make?

“I don’t believe there is,” Landry said. “I pride myself making any type of catch, any way. We call it catch radius and any ball thrown to me is a good ball.”

Taylor and Landry were acquired in trades on the first day of free agency, as general manager John Dorsey began reshaping the roster. In addition to their time together at the team facility, they practiced in Florida and California during their breaks.

The chemistry project has paid dividends through the first week-plus of camp, with Landry a reliable target for the starting quarterback.

“I pride myself on trying to learn the game as a quarterback’s learning,” Landry said. “I try to spend as much time as I can with Tyrod and just kind of learn from my mistakes. I think that has helped us be on the same page, and when you’re on the same page with the quarterback, you’re highly likely to get the ball. And from there it’s just making the plays and building the trust.”

Taylor led two touchdown drives and a field-goal drive. Mayfield started the scrimmage with a touchdown drive with the second-team offense vs. the second-team defense. He made a great throw down the right sideline to receiver C.J. Board for 30 yards and stepped up in the pocket to deliver a 29-yarder to tight end Devon Cajuste to the 1-yard line.

Rookie running back Nick Chubb finished the drive with a short touchdown.

The defense made its share of plays in the scrimmage that featured tackling of everyone but the quarterbacks. It forced a three-and-out in the only series between first-team units and won the goal line drill.

Individually, linebacker Jamie Collins had an interception and a breakup in the end zone. Linebacker Christian Kirksey exploded through the middle and caused a fumble on an unsuccessful handoff from Mayfield to running back Dontrell Hilliard. Defensive tackle Jeremy Faulk and linebackers Mychal Kendricks and Joe Schobert had tackles for loss. “Everybody was getting their hands up, hands on the football, whether it was PBUs or interceptions and rushing well and tapping off the passer,” said defensive end Myles Garrett, who got pressure on Collins’ interception. “I feel like those are signs of a great defense if you can get after the passer and take the ball away.”

No one has stopped Landry in his first months with the team. He’s clearly the best receiver in Josh Gordon’s absence, showing a useful combination of precise route-running and vise-grip hands.

He catches 200-300 balls a day on the JUGS machine, and the work is obvious when he routinely plucks the ball out of the air with one or two hands.

“If I have a comparison to Landry it would probably be Steve Smith, because he’s aggressive,” Garrett said. “He’ll attack you. He’s not afraid of anybody on the field. He’s going to make that catch no matter what it’s going to take. He’s not afraid of going up with anybody.

“So I like that — that kind of confidence and that demeanor he brings to the field. He definitely brings a kind of swagger to the offensive side.”

Browns linebacker Jamie Collins shows signs in scrimmage he’s ready to rebound from injury plagued season
Published: August 3, 2018 - 8:45 PM

By Nate Ulrich

Beacon Journal/Ohio.com

BEREA: If the Browns were to name a defensive most valuable player for Friday’s intrasquad scrimmage, strongside linebacker Jamie Collins would be the top candidate.

Collins intercepted rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield’s pass a split-second after nose tackle Jamie Meder tipped it near the line of scrimmage, ending a two-minute drill in which the No. 1 defense faced the second-team offense.

Later, in a goal-line period pitting the top units against each other, Collins broke up quarterback Tyrod Taylor’s pass to tight end David Njoku in the back of the end zone.

“[Collins] is an instinctual player,” coach Hue Jackson said after the eight practice of training camp. “I think he sees the game a lot differently than everyone else. That is his skill set.

“The more that he practices, the more that we put him into those situations, the more plays that he will make.”

Collins missed 10 of 16 games this past season, three with a concussion and the final seven with a torn medical collateral ligament that required surgery on his right knee. He took it slow in spring practices and didn’t appear in 11-on-11 drills until July 28, the first padded practice of camp.

Defensive end Myles Garrett sees a teammate who has returned to form.

“He’s the same. That’s the Jamie we saw last year before he got hurt and when I first got here,” Garrett said. “So I expected nothing but great things for him, and that’s what he’s shown. He’s got that slow — I wouldn’t say goofy — but relaxed demeanor like I do. He can go out there and turn it on and be a big-time player.”

The trio of Garrett, fellow end Emmanuel Ogbah and Collins excites the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s.

“I think it will be a scary combination,” Garrett said.

Every time I read something about Jarvis Landry, my heart skips a beat. [yes, I am the King of passive voice. Not many will get that. LOL]

We finally have a true super star in Cleveland playing football.

One of the reporters has said he has been the MVP of camp so far. I read a lot on here about Landry since we traded for him. I think those that say he can do everything are going to be right.

his knock in MIA was his lack of big play ability so he looks to be trying to make that thought wrong

I said it to someone yesterday in a PM ... think about this ...

- he’s in his 4th year of the league and hes been to 3 straight pro bowls
- he just signed a huge contract ...
- he led the nfl in catches last year
- he’s still learning as he’s a relative pup

And yet dude has a CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER and is hungry as hell and works his ass off ...

How rare is he? ...

Dudes for real ... we got ourselves one hell of a WR ...

Yeah, early returns are very positive w/Landry, especially his mindset. I kinda wish JG was here solely for that.

Blake said in his recent presser every one out of nine plays last year - they had four LB'ers on the field. Shame because I cannot recall one lol. But point is... with Collins, Kirko, Schobert and now Kendricks - may see more of it. There's a lot of talent at the LB'er position. If not, keeping people like Collins fresh will be easily achievable via rotation.

It just occurred to me, I haven't heard anything about our sixth round safety, Simeon Thomas.
I believe Chad Thomas, Calloway, and Ratley have all been banged up and the other 5 rookies have been popping up on reports regularly.

But I can't recall anything about the safety. Anyone even know what team he's on? I'm guessing 3rd team.

thoughts. Brantley seems every time I hear his name in 2 years it is to hear he was hurt on the play.

Someone point to the time Chubb didn't get tackled for a loss.

I feel really bad about Coley being out, I hope he's better by the Thursday night game vs the Jets.

The following is quoted from this article.

Coley, an undrafted free agent in 2016 who caught on last season and started 15 games, will miss time with an ankle injury.

"He's going to be down for a little while," head coach Hue Jackson said. "That's one of those ankle sprains that they talk about. It's unfortunate, those things happen, but we'll get him back too, here, pretty soon, but he's going to be out for a little bit.

When pressed on if it was a high ankle sprain, Jackson indicated it was.

"Yes, one of those, whatever you call those things," Jackson said, "those super duper sprains. It's going to take him a little time, it is, but that's part of it. You hate it, but we'll get him back, I know that."

I heard something about 5-6 weeks for high ankle sprains.

That's kinda cool.

Man, gotta love Landry.

On another thread, I talked about the problems of overcoming a losing culture. Dorsey was smart to bring in Landry because not only is he a great receiver, but he also will be a great influence on a lot of younger players.

Landry is now my favorite Brown. Joe T was, but he's gone and I think Landry is a worthy successor.
