Watched the episode....
- Does Chubb's helment look to big on him?
- Wasn't all that impressed with the sitdown with Callaway. It seemed like they weren't all that tough on him. However, the FO could have easily acquired everything they needed before us lay people. Still, it came across as being rather eager to give him a pass.
- I did like how Hue brought Callaway in front of the team and said he talked to him and has in back in the situation. I think that's important to do early in camp consdering the background he had in Florida that EVERYONE is aware of. Hopefully that encourages other people to be forthcoming and preemptive in situations moving forward. Or at a minimun, convey that the coach is on your side if you're honest about it.
- HBO tried to carry over the Nassib knowledge but it didn't work well.
- Pretty sure Coleman and Njoku lived in the same building. It's funny when you can recognize certain downtown skyrises when you live in the area.
- Didn't think it was cool that Haley was making fun of people's names. Childish.
- A "meh" episode overall for me, but I'm not that big a fan of Hard Knocks. There were some cool pieces and the tone of the episode felt like they were trying to portray the team coming together before the first game considering some adversity with a trade and an off-field issue. So that was cool.
Whoever that tight end is, it was a good story but not sure of his chances to make it as a ST player. But there is nothing wrong with a feel-good story.
I was hoping to see the back-n-forth between Williams and Haley. Maybe next episode.

At first glance I felt pretty much the same way about how they dealt with Calloway. But after thinking about it I drew a different conclusion. At a certain juncture, if you're keeping him, you have to make the choice to support him.
You can't keep a rookie who screws up and then make him feel like you're leaving him on an island. What I got from it was since it's the first time they're giving him the benefit of the doubt. But if they find out he lied to them or anything else happens, he's done. While I'm not sure that's the attitude I'd have with a kid that has his track record, I can see how if the decision was made to keep him, you have to let him know the score and I felt they did that in a way that was firm.
The Cajuste story is an annual thing with Hard Knocks and it probably won't be the only one. They find the feel good stories of some marginal players just so they can build up the drama when they get cut.
While I've seen some reference to it, I think the entire "good cop/bad cop" routine works pretty well from the coaching staff. We have Williams/Haley playing the role of bad cops and Hue being the fair but firm good cop. Maybe it's not actually a routine but more reflective of who they really are. To me it makes for a good balance and structure.
I think no matter how anyone feels about Hue, we all know it's going to hinge on production from the team as to his future. And, no matter how you feel about him that's the measure of everyone's job. He's being given the talent to produce some wins. I think that's all most of us who have supported him have asked for. Give him a roster with enough talent to win with and see what he can do.

The speculation about Hue Jackson and his ability as a head coach at this point is really tiresome.
The only people that matter in regards to Jackson is Jimmy Haslam, John Dorsey and the team.
This team this year is different than the two previous years.
This team will win games because the team has improved.
Hue Jackson and his future with the Browns starts this year.
I am confident that the team will perform and maybe all the Hue Jackson speculation will end.

Yet when Hue tells an O player to talk to the OC about playing with the second team, they try to find fault with it. You can't make this BS up! lol I agree with this, now that you put it like that. At first, I was like, "dang hue, pushing it onto Haley huh?" But when you put it that way, I can see the argument you are making. However, I still think as the HC, the buck stops with you - so if the player is asking you, you back your OC and say "well corey, WE as the coaching staff feel...." then you can throw in the "going forward I want you take complaints like this to Todd, as he is your OC" I can see why people feel the way do about it, but I see your point as well. And we only saw a clip of that exchange, who knows what else was said.

Well that's the thing about a show like Hard Knocks. We only see an edited version of the show that gives their view they wish for us to see.
I guess I see the incident as any other business, which is exactly what the NFL is, even though sometimes it's hard for fans to view that way.
But to me it's about the chain of command. IMO it would be much like an employee going to the plant manager of a factory to complain that his foreman has put him on third shift. He's going over the head of his immediate supervisor to jump the chain of command.
In this case it's a little different. Hue has acted as the OC for two years now. I'm sure he knows the issues with Coleman quite well. In my above scenario the plant manager probably has very little hands on experience with an hourly employee. With Hue already knowing the issues with Coleman, I don't believe he saw any real issue or need to intercede between Coleman and Haley and felt he didn't want to set the precedent of possibly undermining his OC by interfering in a situation he already understood.
Had he have done that, it would have opened the door for players to expect to use Hue as a middle man between themselves and Haley. I don't believe it would have been a good look.

How many games do we win last year with TT at QB? Be honest, you know it is a minimum of 3, the way things played out...maybe as many as 6 or 7.
Kizer had 22 INTs, 3 F Taylor had 4 INTs, 1 F
Not to mention that what talent we had was inexperienced, with no veteran leadership/competition. This year, still young, but other than Ward, it doesn't seem like a single rookie has been given a starting job. And all position groups have that mid-level veteran talent to bring out competition.
Hue might get fired during or after the season. He might even deserve it. But it is not a culture issue, or because he's soft. IMO.
Browns fans are born with it...

I like hearing that! Also, I should of mentioned it in the "Post Game" thread, but I thought those taunting penalties in the first preseason game may of actually been "intentional". I think the team is tired of being the butt of jokes and such. They want to send the message to the rest of the league that, "We won't be your doorstep anymore". I could see the coaches saying, "Push that envelope, taunt them and get in their faces. Show them that we won't be pushed around anymore! Each side gets one free penalty". So, Ward lays down the wood and taunts the receiver. Landry makes a huge catch and hands out a "blessing". They both get penalties in a spot that ultimately means nothing, but the message has been sent. I was actually okay with both penalties that game.

If you cut Kizers turnovers in half, we probably win 3 games…..that is not given an uptick in production, just a decrease in bone head 3 games minimum. Dude threw 3 INT’s to the same guy, in the same game….I digress. You cut Kizers turnovers in half which is still WAY MORE turnovers than any year of Tyrods career we win 3 games……you add Landry and get a year of seasoning on these guys. I could see them winning up to 6 games, anything more than 6 and Hue probably keeps his job.

as a die hard browns fan, I wish they'd literally just show:
- Coaches meetings - Players mic'd up during games/practice - Coach/Player interactions - Coach/GM/Player meetings regarding personnel/strategy moves
I don't care at all about the "human interest stuff" .. Cajuste, Garrett and his poetry, Kirksey and his guitar, etc.
I understand why they include that stuff, but to me it's just garbage.

I have turned around failed (not just failing) businesses, and it is possible to do so in a rapid fashion. The person in charge has to set absolute rules and standards, and has to be willing to communicate and enforce them through his subordinates. There can be no exceptions, especially at first. There is one way to do things, and that's the way they are done. If someone comes up with a great idea, then listen, but nothing can violate the standards the boss sets. Sometimes it costs you people who "appear" to be productive, but everyone has to do things the right way, or not do them at all. When employees have zero doubt as to how to do things, and what is expected of them, they are actually freed to do their best. They aren't concentrating on reinventing the wheel, they are concentrating on performing their duties properly, and within standards. It's a different scale, obviously, between restaurants and the NFL. However, even in sales, (my other career) the guy who struggles, but asks for help on almost every deal, (at first, anyway) will be far more successful than the guy who just blows out customers hand over fist. Standards allow businesses to be successful. Standards can also turn a business around quickly. Nothing destroys a business faster than when every employee sets their own baseline standards. Nothing destroys a business faster than when there either are no standards, or standards are not enforced. On the other hand, nothing turns a business around more quickly when the baseline is expected and enforced. Can an employee go above and beyond the standard? Of course. Can they do "less than"? Not if they want to keep their jobs. Allowing this not only lowers the performance of that particular employee, but it gets other employees asking "If they don't have to, why do I?" As far as Corey going to Hue to complain, I am sure that Hue was saying to bring things up through the chain of command. Want to know why you aren't with the 1st team? As your immediate boss. If you don't get an answer, then come to me. Don't try to drive the bus over your boss, though, because that's not going to fly.

Nothing tells the story of loses better than turnovers.
Kizer's turnovers were not just bad but they seemed to come at times that were critical. Times when they had a chance to win.
