NFL admits Myles Garrett shouldn't have been flagged for roughing in Steelers tie

By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com
BEREA, Ohio -- All the "I'm sorrys" in the world won't change the outcome of the game, but the NFL admitted Monday that the Browns' Myles Garrett shouldn't have been flagged for roughing on Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger that led to a touchdown on the next play.

The mistake could've been the difference in the game, which ended in a 21-21 tie in overtime.

NFL V.P. of Officiating Al Riveron told NFL Network Monday that Garrett didn't land with most or all of his body weight on Roethlisberger, and therefore it wasn't a foul.

"The rule specifically says 'most, if not all, of your body weight,'" Riveron said. "So we want that player to make an effort.

"And the last three or four weeks, we have pulled extensive video to show the clubs exactly what we're talking about, and we probably last week showed 5-to-1 or 6-to-1 of legal hits, or legal contact, as opposed to illegal contact. Because the question we get all the time is, well, what do you want our players to do? Well, they have to not put the weight on the quarterback.

"And this one [on Garrett] yesterday showed, even though there is some body weight on Ben, this is not what we would consider contact that rises to the level of a foul."

Roethlisberger, facing a third and 7 from the Browns' 8, threw the ball away in the back of the end zone with Garrett bearing down on him. Garrett hit him after the throw, and was flagged half the distance to the goal, but the hit appeared legal.

On the next play, James Conner ran in from the 4 to make it 7-0 with 11:16 left in the half.

Browns coach Hue Jackson, also believing the hit was legal, got in the face of referee Shawn Smith and gave him an earful. But it was too late.

"There were quite a few times I talked to the officials about things I saw and calls that they made,'' Jackson said. "The call on Myles Garrett, I do not get that.
"They said that it was roughing the passer. That led to a touchdown.''

Garrett commits costly penalty in tie with Steelers

Garrett, who had two sacks and two strips in the game, was equally perplexed.

"It wasn't a very sensical explanation,'' he said. "I don't know how from that angle I can hit him and put him into the ground, so you don't want to tackle him. You kind of just have to tackle him into the ground. So you don't you put your body weight or almost all your body weight into him, so I have to torque myself out of the way.

"So hopefully that gets adjusted or something's changed about that, but we'll see. I'm not going to change how I'm hitting because that's how I've always been taught.''

He acknowledged he doesn't know any more what's a good tackle and what's not.

"Honestly, I thought that was a perfectly legal hit,'' he said. "When I hit him, I just had momentum, so of course he went down pretty quick, but I don't know what is a proper way to take him down. I'm going to need some evidence or them to demonstrate for me themselves.''

Jackson didn't let Garrett off the hook for his other penalty, the illegal block above the waist on Maurkice Pouncey in overtime that forced Zane Gonzalez to attempt a 43-yard game-winning kick instead of a 30-yarder. The 43-yarder was blocked with nine seconds left to end the game in a tie.

"Yeah, to me that's inexcusable,'' said Jackson. "I know he is - from the effort standpoint - he thinks he is trying to do the right thing, but you just cannot take that chance. Again it was a very critical time, those extra few yards could have made a difference. Can't make that play, and he'll be the first to tell you, should not do it.

"But again, we got to make sure our guys do not do it. So we will work through it."

Yeah, it's disgusting. That led right to a TD.

Game changer easily it could've been had it been called properly. I don't like the refs that call our games it seems anymore. I guess when you're the laughing stock of the NFL, it's okay and acceptable to make continued bad calls on us.

Good teams and teams with "Name" QBs seem to catch more breaks than others - both with calls and non-calls.

I agree it sucks. The silver lining is that Garrett is going to be a star. It shouldn't be long before he starts getting that star treatment. More camera time will expose the incessant holding/jersey pulling going on.

I was attempting to make "this very point" in the Myles Garrett thread in the "Looking Back Forum".

IMO, because I dared to question Garrett's block and pointed out how costly and unnecessary it was...in turn I was questioned if I had "ever played football" and  if I knew the rules?...

I'm about to do something that is totally out of character for me because I've made a habit of saying very little about myself on the DT forum since I joined, many years ago. But I've grown tired of this line of attack if I happen to disagree with some about something concerning the Browns.

In this case, I feel a need to break my silence because I sense an attempt to belittle me and my opinions just because I don't agree with some about the wisdom of MG's block that was flagged on Schobert's return with 36 seconds left in OT.  As some can now see, Hue Jackson is also  questioning the wisdom of Garrett's block at that critical point in the game...just as I was a few days ago.

So, for those who question my football experience?... here it goes..as a Freshman...I was on the varsity but only got to play a few plays in two games as a nose guard. Our head coach was an idiot who was all for blood and guts but when it came to teaching the game and how to play smart football, that was not a priority and our W-L record reflected that coaches approach to the game...the team went 1-7.

As a sophomore, we had a new football coach who was short in stature (5'5"/140#) and he came from a school that was in our conference that had a history of producing winning football teams . What he may have lacked in stature, he more than made up for in brains..the guy knew football and he knew how to teach it.

As a sophomore I started at center on offense and at LOLB on defense, was on the punt team and the punt return team. I missed the last two games that season due to a broken bone in my wrist...refs would not allow me to play with a cast on, even if it was padded...my season was over after 7 games. Our team won 3 games losing 6 but we were competitive in all but 2 games!

After the season was over, I was sitting in study hall when the Coach stopped to tell me that I had been awarded "Honorable Mention" as an OLB by the league coaches. I had no idea that my play at LB was anything special. I was really surprised especially since I had missed two games with the broken wrist. I had no idea or expectations.

During the summer I again baled hay for a local farmer and began my own off season conditioning program.
As a junior, I was moved to OG on offense and I again played LOLB on defense. I did split time with a senior at OG and avoided injury playing the entire season at LB. Our team was 7-2 placing 3rd in the conference with the two teams that beat us placing 1st and 2nd in the conference.

The 1st place team from our conference went "undefeated" and "un-scored upon" and they were voted the #1 team in the state of Ohio in division A. At that time, Ohio had 3 divisions in sports, based on enrollment...divisions A..AA..AAA.
...as a junior I earned "First Team" honors at OLB in the conference.

As a senior, Coach moved me to ROT on offense and I remained at LOLB on defense. I was on the punt and punt return teams as well as on the kickoff and kick return teams...I didn't come off the field and loved it that way. Our team went 7-2 again and I was first team all conference at OT and second team OLB. I also earned special mention honors in the district and a Toledo Blade award.

I was accepted at a college known for academics that had a football program that had been down for a few years. The school had just hired a new HC from a very successful college football program. As a freshman I started on the JV team at NT and dressed as a backup DL on the varsity. At mid-season, I suffered an injury requiring surgery ending my freshman year in football.

But there was something I left  out that happened when I was a senior in HS...there was this event impacting nearly all young Americans called the "Vietnam War". I was eligible for the draft as a senior and when the draft lottery was held that year, my number was #2. Not much doubt about my future being in the military if I did not get a college deferment, which I did for my freshman year of college.

After my freshman year of college, I decided to join the USAF for 4yrs

So I hope that answers the question...U EVER PLAYED FOOTBALL MAC? ...

Thanks for your service mac ... thumbsup

I didn’t call u out cause u questioned the “smartness’ of the block ... OF COURSE IT WAS STUPID ... duh ... exaclty when is any penalty “smart” ...

I called u out cause u think a DLman made a block in the back and want to place the blame for not winning on him ... its not in his JOB DESCRIPTION and i think its DUMB AS HELL to be harsh on him for doing it ..... and I still thinks its assinine to whack a DLman for committing a block in the back ...

Whats next mac ... u gonna call out TT for whiffing on a tackle on a fumble return .. rofl ...

And i asked if u ever payed football cause IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT penalties like that are committed without THINKING ... its called NATURAL INSTINCTS to block a man in the back like MG did ... dudes that DO IT FOR A LIVING get called for blocks in the back all the time ...

Guys on coverage teams do it for a LIVING ... PRACTICE IT DAILY IN CAMP and there called all the time ... seems like theres at least one a game from both teams in every game ...

Thats why i questioned weather u played the game ...

Now, i won’t question it anymore .. i’ll Just point out that despite the fact u played the game u still have no clue if your going to chastise a DLman for making a block in the back ...

Garrett was a bonehead on the block in the back. To me, that was the biggest gaffe of the game ... you just can't take that chance. Worst case scenario? We have the ball at the TEN YARD LINE in a monsoon.

You can't risk it

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

As you noted mac, playing or coaching the game doesn't necessarily make you football smart.

btw, thank you for your service, that was more important to me as for you character. wink

Garrett made a mistake on the block, but to focus only on that one play and ignore everything else he did is unfair. We wouldn't have even been in the game w/out him.

Diam...a block in the back,  it's only been penalty in football for over 60 years..a block in the back will get you a flag and set your team back and Garrett might want to put it in "his job description", like yesterday.

You want to give Garrett a pass for his block...I don't and I won't.

It's obvious that you and I were taught the game by different sources. Where I'm from, officials don't give passes for illegal blocks and coaches taught the game, beginning with the basics.

I was glad to see that Hue didn't give Garrett a pass either...from the article above...

" Jackson didn't let Garrett off the hook for his other penalty, the illegal block above the waist on Maurkice Pouncey in overtime that forced Zane Gonzalez to attempt a 43-yard game-winning kick instead of a 30-yarder. The 43-yarder was blocked with nine seconds left to end the game in a tie.

If we were a "better" team and not known for finding ways to lose...that call may never get made. Shoot...in reality, it only HELPED Pouncey get to Shobert.

Example: We had a very short punt return and Charles (I think) got called for a block in the back. Looked at it a few times and it was essentially him bumping into a Cheater after the tackle had been made. Move on back 10 yards / half-the-distance.

We have that "rep" and officials are looking for it so we have to be extra-careful. Sunday - for all its worts - may have been a small step in the right direction.

Willie ...

That call was a NO BRAINER for the official ... he has to call it unless he wants a ding on his evaluation .. and not calling that one would have been a MAJOR DING ..

NFL officials go over the game film with there supervisors every Tuesday ... when the officials leave the stadium after the game .. they get a dvd that has every play on it .. the plays that were in there “area” and there “responsibility” are shown from multiple angles ... he or she writes up a report and sends it to his supervisor on Monday ... they then review the tape together on Tuesday ...

BEATING THE TAPE is all that matters to them ... beating the tape means GET THE CALLS RIGHT ... and when u have a player from the team with possession of the ball running behind a defender and the O player extends his arms and touches the D players back and the D player goes down .. IT HAS TO BE CALLED ..

The official has no choice ...

I agree with your premise that were not going to get calls that are BORDERLINE .. this call in particualr had nothing to do with anything other than the ref would have gotten REAMED if he didn’t call throw that flag ... this was a NO-BRAINER no gray area at all ..

That's been the problem around here for too long. People are always willing to give out atta boys and unwilling to call out the mistakes. Objectivity allows people to do both.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
