Here was Wedge's comment about not bunting with Peralta:
"Wedge said he didn't ask Peralta to bunt Gomez to third because he was the Tribe's best chance to deliver the run."
PD Link
thats why wedge is not a manager that will take us anywhere. the best chance for the run, is to bunt, if you bunt downt he 3rd base line, you are almost guaranteed gomez will get to third, and if its good enough and you hustle, you might make it to first. I love how he thinks a guy thats strikes out 2 times already in the game and is been in a 3 year slump, is our best chance at getting a run in? cabrera should have been up there

a .273 avg with 17 HR and 59 RBI's does not = a slump However his 112 K's makes it pretty sure letting him swing away is really a hit or miss shot. He should have been bunting.

i know...i was just exaggerating the slump thing, just to push home the fact that he really shouldn't have been trying to swing away

It would only be the next two; the guy who bunted made an out. In this case, even if Peralta sacrifice bunted successfully, Gutierrez and Barfield followed with whiffs. This team has bigger problems than inability to bunt.
Dave,
While I respect your opinion, I believe try to bunt did matter. Its fundamental baseball. If you bunt the guy over to 3rd, you have so many more ways to score. Pass ball, wild pitch, weak grounder, long fly ball, short fly ball and bad throw to home, heck even a balk!!
By not bunting / moving the runner over, there is less pressure on the pitcher the by not having to be perfect. Guy on second isn't going to score on any of the above I listed. Someone has to get a hit (which they couldn't do all night), AND the guy has to score from 2nd. Plus now Wedge has admitted his team sucks at fundamental's when needed and has no confidence.

Good post Rogue... I can think of two instances just off the top of my head this year where a team bunted in the bottom of the 9th and the pitcher or 3rd baseman picked it up and threw it into right field and the game was over right then...
The Indians have been getting 5-6 hits a game.. it's not like they are on a hot streak and you can count on getting one person out of three to get a hit...

good point DC....I forgot "error" (and "base hit"). I guess there are 9 ways to score with the guy on third and one out. Much more limited when he's on second.

Damnit, I'm so mad I want to throw sand in my eyes. How many games has Peralta lost by not being able to bunt. Wedge must have had somebody on his bench that can bunt.
The only way the Indians can score is on a homerun and they are not hitting them right now.
Paralta has struck out 22 out of 28 ABs against Santana and he still goes up with his hands on the bottom of the bat swinging for the fence. He trys to pull everything and if he doesn't K he grounds out to 3rd or short. He is lazy and has no range at short.

I feel your pain with Peralta. It can be a love hate thing with him. He doesn't know how to "just make contact" and move runners. Heck, I've even seen Garko choke up on the lumber a few times.

Grady is another one. He might hit .320 if he cut his swing down a little with 2 strikes. Maybe we should'nt screw with Grady's swing but we should with Peralta's for sure. Either that or go with this new kid Cabrea. He is supposed to take over eventually anyway.

while gutierrez and barfield both whiffed after peralta did, their entire approach to their respective at-bats changes if the runner is 90 feet from home, because while you are trying to argue not bunting with a guy on second, no outs, you cannot argue doing anything but getting a fly ball deep enough to win the game...
but i am in total agreement that they have problems beyond bunting...
the entire philosophy of this team right now is an absolute joke...
i wonder if paul byrd will go after borowski in the clubhouse...
Ten years ago, under Hargrove, I can't help but wonder that Lofton and Vizquel would have found a way to steal home,....remember THAT ??

3. Borowski instead of Perez. There is a lefty in Granderson up that has been owned by a lefty all day. You have Perez, who has been lights out against everybody lately. Borowski has notoriously been awful in non-save situations all year, and will have to face the top of the order with Ordonez(A-Rod quality this year... we know what happened there) hitting if anyone gets on. And you do WHAT???
Exactly. Clueless.
BTW, the game tonight is on ESPN. I hope we don't embarass ourselves on National TV, we've embarassed ourselves enough.

Um...go Tribe?
Meh...somehow I have a feeling that our poor fundamentals will do us in until the end of the year. We don't know how to bunt.

nice bounce back win tonight after a complete meltdown last night...
carmona=awesome
he's an ace for sure, an ace gets you a win after a bad stretch like we just had...
i pound wedge for a lot of things, but it was a good move to get borowski back in there, we may not like him as the guy, but he is the guy, and you've gotta get him right back out there after a terrible outing last night
this team still needs to learn to grind though... they could be up a game in the central had they correctly handled the 9th last night...

they could be half a game up if mike hargrove was afraid of playing in the snow...that game is starting to ahve huge implications

There's still life in the Featherheads after all ... good win. Carmona was the bomb - especially in the 8th - and the new lineup is starting to pay off, IMO. I think I have a lot to learn about how to be a fan in an actual pennant race. In their 90's run, they just blew people away and cruised through September. This year may go to the wire and I'm gonna have to get used to the highs and lows of a close race. Tonight is a high.

you're right..
do you guys remember how bad the central was in the 90's? we'd have that thing wrapped up every year by the end of august...
in my opinion i think it's better to fight until the end, even with the chance that you could miss the playoffs... look at the white sox and how they crumbled in august and early september, only to fight back the last few weeks and go on to go 11-1 in the playoffs to win the world series...
and think about all those wild card teams that have won it all...
also, that was a great point about that seattle game back in april... how bad would it suck to miss the playoffs by a game and look back and see that we were an out away from that win...
that's why i always tell people that wins in april may and june may seem meaningless, but when you miss the playoffs by a game, a few games, even more than a few games, you can always look back to those first 3 months and see games you should have won...
i know i did that with the tribe when they missed out 2 years ago, and with the cavs when they missed the playoffs by a game 2 years in a row... the cavs learned from it, the tribe is still a question mark... they've gotta stop this slide and start putting together wins...
i also like the move of sizemore to the 3 hole... i think it fattens the middle of the lineup, and makes it tougher on opposing pitchers, even at 40, lofton is probably a better fit for the leadoff... although what do you do when we go up against a lefty?

The Tribe looked a little better last night but it was still only because hey got some clutch hits... they still stranded a lot of runners and did NOTHING to try to manufacture some runs...

Even the Tribe's AA farm team in Akron got more hits off that guy in his last start. At least they won. They (and we) needed that extremely bad.

The good news...Tigers and Yanks are playing each other in a 4-game series in the coming days (and a 3-game set next weekend). It will keep one or both close to us. And we get a night off the rest today.
The bad news...We're playing a decent D-Rays team next (7-9 in their last 16 - we're 6-10 in the same amount). They spilt a 4-game series with Detroit and then played the Red Sox really tough in their last three games. They won't roll over for us.
We need a new "mascot" for our series threads on this board. The Alba magic might be gone. Any ideas on the next mascot?

If we can get the Rays bullpen in the game early, we definitly have a shot of scoring some runs!

"George is getting upset!" Indians Report from ESPN August 15, 2007 - Associated PressIndians manager Eric Wedge vented more frustration. He's now changed his lineup from top to bottom. One day after sticking Kenny Lofton in the leadoff spot, Wedge benched Josh Barfield, the Indians' No. 9 hitter who was in a 3-for-29 slump. Wedge has lost patience with the second baseman's inconsistency. Rookie Asdrubal Cabrera, who started the season at Double-A, took Barfield's spot in the field and lineup. Wedge intimated the move could be more than a temporary one if Cabrera produces. Asked if Barfield might be out for a few days, Wedge said, ``We've got Cabrera in there tonight,'' he said. ``I'll leave it at that.'' Barfield, who came over in a trade from San Diego in November, has played as well defensively as the Indians could have hoped, but he has struggled at the plate in his first season facing AL pitching. ``It's frustrating,'' he said. ``Everybody wants to do well and you know you can do better than this.'' ... Following Tuesday's 6-2 loss in 10 innings, Wedge questioned the Indians' toughness and said there were a few players ``feeling sorry for themselves. Enough is enough.'' Wedge's outburst was a change from his recent approach. Publicly, he has been very protective of his players, and while he didn't name names, Wedge was as pointed as he's been all season. ``I've seen some things that I'm not particularly happy with,'' he said.

i don't understand why he has to be so guarded about it...
that's why i like ozzie guillen, he has no problem calling out his own players
it's almost like wedge is afraid to call out his own guys, who cares?
i mean we all know baseball players are a bunch of whiny crybabies... but over the course of a 162 game season you have to lash into these guys and motivate them... remember what jim leyland did last year after they dropped a few games to the tribe?

i hate Wedge, especially the way he handled things last year. the manager is supposed to take the heat off the players, but he continually puts it on them.

This is why I dreaded the day the Tigers announced they were getting Jim. He is one helluva manager, and if the Tribe don't make, I'm pulling for the Tigers.
