Another STUPID decision to "emphasize" a rule that was already working.

The spirit of the rule is to eliminate intentional, egregious action... not to have officials out there trying to calculate the exact percentage of body weight on a QB in a split second.

This league is run by monkeys.

A 33 yard kick could be blocked like a 43 yard kick was. I'm not sure that the block in the back cost the game.

If anything, the roughing call on that 3rd and goal was bigger. We had them stopped and Garret lands on Ben. Pit scored a TD on the next play instead of a FG. 4 pt swing.

That was a bush league call against Myles on the roughing the passer. The very next series, Watt did the same thing to TT, and not call.

Not a bush league call at all. It's a bush league rule but the rule, as much as I hate it, was flagged correctly. It should have been called on Watt too.

Looks like it was a bush league call

The flag on Garrett during Schobert's fumble return for blocking in the back, was costly. If was a stupid penalty that looked like Garrett simply pushed a Steeler in the back. He was called for an Illegal Block Above the Waist, 10 yards.

Instead of the ball being on the 12yd line, it's on the 22 and ends up being a 43 yd FG attempt. With 36 seconds left on the clock, the Browns could have tried for a TD with time for couple passes in the end zone and if incomplete, then trying a FG from around the 20 yd line.

These kind of mistakes can be costly but the good news is, they can be avoided if Garrett and all the rest of the players play "smart football".

Myles, if you are looking at a defenders back..DON'T TRY TO BLOCK HIM.

The coaching staff needs to teach the players the rules of the game so the can stop beating themselves...jmho

Ya’all are placing an awful lot of blame on a DEFENSIVE LINEMAN making an ILLEGAL BLOCK in the back ...

Think about that for a second before u start typing about what Myles did wrong on that play ...

IT REALLY HURT ... but i think ya’all may be a wee bit hard on a DEFENSIVE LINEMAN committing a BLOCKING PENALTY ...

I for one am hoping MG don’t spend a lot of time in blocking drills ... thumbsup

I thought it was a really weak call by the officials. I've seen that as a no call a million times because it didn't prevent the play for being made not have any real impact on the game. Schobert was taken out of bounds by the guy who was blocked in a near-simultaneous action.

I was actually disappointed with Avery on the play. He did a beautiful job getting the strip sack, but then he ran down the sideline with Schobert, arms out like a TD return was assured, paying no attention to any Steelers players in pursuit.

If anyone wants to check that, the play is at 11:20.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7_ffLeAcjc

I HATE criticizing the kid after such a brilliant play, but watch. Avery was so convinced it was a touchdown that he didn't look to see who he needed to block. If anyone needed to be blocked. If he'd focused on blocking, he could have easily taken #53 (Who Garrett blocked in the back) and Schobert probably gets taken out INSIDE THE FIVE, assuming Decastro and Gilbert even have a chance at him - which it looked like they did, but even then Schobert had an inside lane that he could have taken.

Such a shame. It's a big moment for the rookie and his brain probably didn't work, but he needed to act like he'd been there before.

With that said, both of these only takes the issue away from Garrett, who should have known better in the first place. Such a disappointing end to a wonderful play.

Diam...NO, I'm not being too hard on a defensive lineman.

Is it too much to expect a defensive lineman to know the rules of football?

Is it asking too much to expect A PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER to know that you don't block any player from BEHIND?

We are talking about football facts that are taught to players first in JR HIGH or earlier. Think about that..coaches teaching football rules to kids in the 7th and 8th grade that you do not block in the back because it is a penalty...

....yet here we have a fan of a Professional Team, asking that we give our star defensive player A PASS FOR GETTING CALLED FOR A VERY COSTLY PENALTY.

Garrett should have been taught the rules of football in high school and most certainly at Texas A&M..yet, in his 2nd year of PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL, Myles still has not learned that you do not block a defender from behind.

It is damn shame but it is up to the Professional coaching staff to deal with those players who were not paying attention to all those coaches who tried to teach them before they became NFL players.

Where was Garrett's brain on that play? What if Schobert had scored a TD?...

...Myles Garrett's block would have whipped the score off the board.

I will admit, I can't stand stupid mistakes because I know they can lead to GAMES LOST...I've watched enough of Browns football to know that stupid, unnecessary mistakes are responsible for some of the Browns losses.

I guess Hue needs go back to coaching JR High football basics.

BDU...Avery is but another example of a PROFESSIONAL football player who doesn't have a clue what he was supposed to do when blocking for a teammate. Avery could have been called for spreading his arms to shield the defenders.

Watching the entire play and Garrett clearly putting both of his hands on the defenders back and shoving him into Schobert, knocking Schobert to the ground...it makes me sick to watch stupid football.

So, your only comments about Myles Garrett in a Myles Garrett thread are negative? You didn't see or like anything else he did during the game?

U EVER PLAYED FOOTBALL MAC? ... not trying to be a jerk, its a legite question ...

Actually u EVER WATCH A PUNT RETURN mac ... do the dudes assigned to BLOCKING the GUNNERS not know the rules mac? ... cause those guys seemed to get flagged for it EVERY DAM GAME ...

This is why I STAY THE HELL AWAY FORM YOU AND YOUR POSTS RIGHT HERE ...

This penalty Myles committed had ZERO TO DO WITH HIS KNOWLEDGE of the rules ... and everything to do with simply being a HUMAN BEING who acted on IMPULSE as opposed to thinking about it ... he didn’t have time to think ...

IT WAS A BAD REACTION TO THE SITUATION that arose unexpectedly and quickly ... add to that it has ZERO TO DO WITH HIS JOB DESCREPTION and he should spend about 15 minutes all year even attempting to block (in TC when they run drills specifically for this .. i can’t imagine they spend a lot of time on this .. but i have NO CLUE .. if Myles spends anytime on the blocking sleds ) ... and it all adds up to a dumb ass penalty on a guy in a situation he has VERY VERY RARELY if EVER been in ...

And he made a MISTAKE .. BUM!!!!

Appearantly theres ALOT OF RULES MYLES DON’T KNOW ... crap ... he jumps offsides EVERY GAME at least once it seems ...

Do us all a favor mac ...SHOOT HIM AND E-MAIL AND INFORM HIM OF THAT RULE while your explaining that blocking in the back is illegal ... rofl

U can have the last word ... i wont read it .. those are your best posts IMO ... thumbsup

I wouldn't go that far. I'm learning more towards a kid making the biggest play of his life and getting caught up in the moment. This is the joys of a young roster.

For what it's worth, anyone is welcome to watch that same highlight reel and document the sheer volume of missed calls on the Steelers. My absolute favourite is when Garrett forced the fumble on Connor because it's a close up angle from the sideline. On that play, Coley's "9" on the "93" ON HIS BACK is literally almost under his facemask because he's being so heavily pulled by his jersey.

The sheer volume of missed calls on the Steelers is unfathomable.

The difference between our guys and theirs is they get away with it. Ours don't.

My God, the amount of nitpicking going on over the minutia of a fantastic defensive play is insane.

Yes, there are things that could have gone better, but good grief, they created an INCREDIBLE play for us. The rest of it are coaching points and teaching opportunities.

vers...what Garrett did positive was obvious and he's received plenty of praise. But you will have to forgive me, vers...I'M NOT A RA RA GUYS who jumps on a bandwagon and forgets about those little mistakes because Browns fans are just happy to have a good player

Browns fans have become so easy to please.

To me, all good can be forgotten because we didn't win a game that was HANDED TO US.

Should Gregg Williams have to set his entire defense down for a special meeting to go over the BASIC RULES OF THE GAME?

GW damn well better be having a special meeting for his entire defensive unit because they are playing some STUPID FOOTBALL that will cost the team more wins as the season progresses.

If you believe I'm picking on Garrett too much...sorry.

I hope the coaching staff made an example of Garrett's penalty and used it as teaching moment for the entire team.

This team needs to get better and do their best to play error free football...jmho

Garrett played a pretty darn good game Sunday. That tackle is going to have sore calves doing so much back-pedalling. The kid has power, fluidity and he made several big plays. We’ve not had difference makers in a while. 20 sacks this season wink

It's not surprising because you are the same guy that constantly trashed Myles before the draft.

I'll put it to you this way, that penalty did not lose us the game and w/out Myles, we would have lost the game. No way we tie it w/out the turnovers he created.

Watt may have had a better game .. thats a toughie ..

I think Ward was way more consistent than Myles was. Myles had some issues against the run. He wasn't getting pressure in the first half. Ward was sound the entire game.

Watt as the most dominant guy on the field. Did we pass on him for Peppers?

Can’t argue with Ward ... i’ll Take MG’s IMPACT PLAYS ... not that Ward’s weren’t huge ...

Thing i LOVED about Ward ... the 1st pick was 100% FOOTBALL INSTINCTS ... what a great read of Ben’s eyes to leave his man ... to me that falls under the category of INSTINCTS ...

When we drafted Peppers i knew DIDDLY about him .. the only thing I could hang my hat on was Harbough saying he had the best football instincts he’d ever been around ... its one of the reasons I loved FITZ this year ... well .. so far .. Peppers has not shown an instinct much less instinctS ... *L* ..

Ward ... oh man ... i’m SOOO EXCITED ...

U mentioned it another thread ... even the TD pass he could not have had better coverage ... he tried swatting it when it was close .. he was reading AB’s eyes to know when to swat ... its common sense but SO MANY DON’T DO IT ...

Dudes a tackling machine ... ain’t afraid to stick his nose in ...

If i would have had any clue just how good he is .. i’d have been pimping him over Chubb a lot harder ...

U were 100% correct about how much i like this dude .. I NEVER felt this way about Joe .. EVER ...

There was another play where a receiver caught a crossing route and was just starting to turn up the Browns sideline and Ward got to the edge and blew up the blocker forcing the receiver back inside where Ward had help.. I think it was middle of the second quarter... It was beautiful and so smart. I am giddy about Ward.

Myles Garrett might be RPO proof. This sack was on an RPO, the pulling right guard was supposed to be the one to block him, but he didn't get there in time.

The kid was running full speed and even in slo mo he merely touched the player as he was already falling down. All he did was caught up to the player at full speed and DID NOT PUSH the player just put out his hand to cushion the collision. He did nothing wrong but give the Refs an opportunity to help their team...we see them 2 times a year every season by now we know we got to beat the Steelers and the refs.

Jmho

I'm sorry, but the refs made a lot of questionable calls that went against the Steelers. Their fan base was whining just as much as ours was.

I think there were good and bad calls on both teams.

Not all questionable calls have the same value...

I am not one to blame or make excuses on the backs of the refs but the roughing the passer call on Garrett was atrocious and very very costly..

That rule is almost impossible to interpret and call correctly in real time and gives too much discretion to the refs...I would not want to be expected to get that call right as I'm sure the nfl refs don't want either.

ONE BILLION % CORRECT ... thank god at least someone gets it ...

That call is IMPOSSIBLE to make in real time ... and i know for a FACT that is one of the 3 or 4 rules they’ve added over the last 5 years or so that have made NFL officials jobs NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE ..

All these arm chair refs are CLUELESS ... ya, that includes u tabber ... your WHINING about officials is well beneath U ... u just moaned about this:

A blocker running behind a defender EXTENDS HIS ARM onto the back of the defender and the defender GOES FLYING ... that is the NOBRAINER OF ALL NONRAINERS TO CALL ..

The ref dont get a chance to watch 13 replays from 6 angles while sipping his latte and eating popcorn from the comfort of his couch to make the call ...

If the official don’t call that there getting there SCORE DOWNGRADED when they do there review with their supervisor .. they do that every Tuesday ... they have to watch over 8 hours of tape before the call (they get film with every play from 2 - 4 angles depending on the play to review ... ) ...

As an official ... only one thing matters ... BEAT THE TAPE ... anyone thats ever officiated at a high level will know what i mean by that ...

The NFL coaches (they make the rules) have made NFL officials jobs virtually IMPOSSIBLE over the last 5 years with the rule changes ... way to much “gray” area in the rules and that means an official has to “THINK” for lack of a better term and thats never good ...

I think it did ...... but there was no angle that showed, absolutely, that it did. You need definitive prove to overturn the call on the field, and I heard that the replay officials are giving more credence to the on field officials, unless there is overwhelming proof to the contrary.

I agree, that punt most def hit Chubb.

I think it did ...... but there was no angle that showed, absolutely, that it did. You need definitive prove to overturn the call on the field, and I heard that the replay officials are giving more credence to the on field officials, unless there is overwhelming proof to the contrary.

That's the key phrase, definitive proof. It looked to me that the ball touched, but perhaps if the trajectory/angle changed of the ball, that would've been overturned.

Definitive, unquestionable proof for replay.

That's the key for me; the trajectory and rotation of the ball never changed.

Some Steelers fans said that because he flinched, it proves that the ball hit him, but just seeing a ball come close to your face, in that situation, would probably make most people flinch. Watching it again, I think the right call was made.

I would also add that if the opposite call had been made on the field, it would have been hard to reverse.

I also think the punt hit Chubb. But looking at the replays there was no view that showed with certainty that it did hit his helmet so they could not overturn the call. Had the initial call been that it did hit the helmet they would not have been able to overturn that call either.

Let's put this into context. tab said that Garrett did not commit a penalty on the interception return. He then said that we have to face the Steelers and the refs when we play them. He is basically saying the NFL is cheating for the Steelers.

Hogwash!

There were close calls for and against both teams. There were controversial calls for and against both teams. I despise this crap that the NFL is conspiring against the Browns.

yeah that was a first...calls against the Steelers...they were amiss as they couldn't understand why the refs weren't giving them anything...lol laugh

It the timing of that penalty that is all. I'm half joking regarding the refs and steelers. Just it seems they for the most part get things over looked. Like holding, which Sunday it was not for the first time in a long time.

Still, that was ticky tack and if you look done a lot more often and not called.

Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off!
