Browns defensive lineman Emmanuel Ogbah to miss time with ankle injury

Updated 3:43 PM; Posted 3:18 PM

https://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2018/09/browns_defensive_lineman_emman.html

BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns were hoping to unleash the pass rush tandem of Myles Garrett and Emmanuel Ogbah this season. They'll have to wait a little bit longer to really see the impact the duo can have.

Ogbah suffered an ankle injury on the final play of the first quarter on Sunday.

"We'll see how he responds, he may miss some time," head coach Hue Jackson said.

Ogbah was able to return to the game but played just 27 snaps. Chris Smith handled most of Ogbah's workload, playing 57 snaps.

"I don't know if it's a true high ankle sprain," Jackson said. "It might be something like that, I don't think it's the ankle ankle sprain that lasts six weeks or whatever that is, but we'll see exactly where it is here later on today."

The Browns will count on Anthony Zettel, claimed off waivers from Detroit last week, and Smith to fill in for Ogbah.

"I think we have some guys that can do it, we just got to go get them prepared and ready to do it."

Ogbah played 16 games his rookie season, but his second year was cut short with a broken foot suffered against the Lions a season ago. He has 9.5 career sacks.

While obviously not ideal, it will be interesting to see what Genard Avery can do in Ogbah's spot some of time.

i think Avery takes Ogbahs spot and Ogbah gets traded at some point.

Of course, you don't want to have a starter out of the lineup. I do think we have some options with Smith, Zettel, Ogenigbo and maybe Avery.

I really really like Ogbah - I hope he comes back quick and can stay healthy.

Not exactly on topic. Of the two new interior DL, Lawrence got two snaps all game. Davis got zero. We need those guys to take some snaps to keep the opponent run game from gashing us.

Agreed...no defense plays well when exhausted....need to keep players fresh with "wave" reserves.

I don't like it, but IMO opinion Ogbah is a little over rated.

He is a little bit above "guy" status.

What has he really done?

Meder and Shelton were both missed on those runs up the middle. I get that we were looking for a different type of DT, but Meder was cheap enough to keep.

Don't look back man....Meder was a nice player.

I compare him to Hank Fraley. A fan fav, but just a decent player who took it to the max.

We all appreciate that, but in the end just a decent player ....not that there is anything wrong with that....just saying.

This news sucks. Ogbah was a good option for sealing the edge and against the run.

As said, with him and Jamie Meder gone - we're talking about two of the best run defense players on the D.

Although I love Avery, he's only going to be effective rushing imo until he develops.

The #Bills have signed DE Nate Orchard to a one-year deal. They also officially announced the release of Adolphus Washington. Orchard was likely brought in because of the Shaq Lawson injury. Could mix in pretty quickly to the rotation.

Pff graded Avery higher than Garrett for the game. I don’t think we will miss ogbah much

Rated Myles at 81 and Avery at 90

PFF is a source, but not an end all. They once had John Hughes as rated the top D-lineman in football.

Avery looked the part IMO

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

OBI played well too!

We got a good young middle of our d-line, I just miss Meder, Rubin, and a few other unhearalded d-lineman in our history. We've had a few working class guys that have come out of nowhere and overacheived and we've shown most of them the door as quickly as they have came.

What has he really done?

What he's done is far more noticeable when he's not there. In the second and third quarter, without Ogbah, Connor averaged 8 yards per carry. In each quarter. Double what he averaged in the first quarter with Ogbah in there.

Same thing that happened last year when people actually thought Carl Nassib and Nate Orchard could replace Ogbah. We got run all over.

I'll never understand the hate the kid gets. Since we've drafted him, people debated if Orchard and Nassib were better. Now it's Avery and Smith. If he's just a guy or, generously, slightly above it.

Weak.

Ogbah is a beast against the run, decent against the pass and incredibly versatile in where he can play. When Avery stepped in was when Ogbah would have been playing the interior just as Garrett did. That's one reason I don't understand these Avery-over-Ogbah takes: We'll be seeing them together, not at the expense of one another.

Ogbah isn't at a Myles Garrett level of brilliance, but the impact he makes for this football team is noticeable for anyone who isn't invested in not seeing it.

True, but they are pretty fair most of the time with their assessment. Plus watching the game and Avery was noticeably present.

Yeah, they are a good source of information. I like reading their grades, but their off at times.

They suck at grading DBs, but are pretty good w/most other units.

j/c ..... Ogbah is excellent at sealing the edge. I believe that the Steelers had only 25 yards while Ogbah was in there. (He was injured on tyhe final play of the 1st quarter)

Thank GOD Ward looks like a great pick. Cause with Ogbah injured already, yet AGAIN, there'd be plenty of talk about that other Chubb.

The true talk has been Corbett/Chubb over Harold Landry.

Agreed. Harold Landry was the guy I was hoping for at that pick.

But, hindsight is 20-20. If they end up being decent players, it is what it is. Can't hit on all of them

Avery may get bumped up o rotated in regularly. I would do it to develop him. Maybe a package specialist. Hope Ogbah recovers and returns ASAP.

I’m not sure how they grade .. i could care less ... i’ll evaluate for myself with help from some on here for what to watch for ...

BUT MG was by far our best player and i could give two craps how he graded out against the run ..

- the pressure he caused made him the best player on the field for us IMO ..
- he made the play that turned the game around ...
- he sped Ben’s clock up witch helped lead to the picks and was part of the reason for his innacuracy ...

I don’t really follow this stuff .. HOW MANY PRESSURES DID HE CAUSE?

W/O MG we do not tie

How does a guy that played .. how many snaps did Avery play ... grade out higher than a guy that played every snap ...

Wonder WHAT THERE FORMUALA IS ... appearantly it has nothing to do with the impact they had on the game ...

we didn't win..lol, but I think they take in account matchups. PFF felt like their left tackle pretty much shut MG down, it wasn't until we moved him around and let him come around on stunts and move inside against a guard did he start wreaking havoc..plus all of his costly penalties i think figured into the grade

The way they use Ogbah, he wont be replaced by Avery, Avery has his own role. Ogbah is a big, great edge setter and moves to 3T on pass rushes. We need him back soon.

you had a good run Hank.

I will say it again.........Chris Smith is a pretty good player who can play in the base package. Avery can come in on passing situations. Not a huge loss at this point in time.

Did Chad Thomas play at all? All I know is besides the starting four...all I saw was Chris Smith. And then someone lining up near the red zone for a couple plays...
