Maybe we suffered Gilbert and Manziel so we could savour Ward and Mayfield. Who knows how the cosmos works but Ward is turning out to be a helluva player.

If Gilbert was half as good as DW we would have quite a combo at CB.

Ditto.
I was on the wagon for Darnold & Chubb and my Day 1 reaction was that we screwed the pooch, again, and we needed to dump Dorsey..... I could not be more ecstatic to be so stinking wrong!

That's what I wanted too, but Mayfield was a very close second for me so I wasn't too upset about that pick. Ward at 4 seemed way too high and I wanted Chubb as well. Glad we took Ward.

Ya .... and 1.5 sacks playing on the opposite side of one Von Miller ...

He doesn’t have the burst to ever be a real good pass rusher much less a great one ....

How weird is it that we passed on the consensus pics TWICE in the SAME draft, and BOTH our picks are the ones shinning the brightest!

I don't think its too soon to start building John Dorsey way in front of the stadium smile

I enjoy watching Ward..his ability to recognize a situation and react, is what makes Ward so different than most young CBs.

Also, he appears to be listening to what Gregg Williams is attempting to teach, "for the most part". One of the most noticeable areas of improvement might be Wards tackling, a point that Williams criticized Ward for during preseason. From that time forward, Wards tackling technique has gotten better.

...with one exception during the Ravens game. In the first half after making a couple of textbook tackles, Ward had a chance to tackle a Ravens RB for a loss and what does Ward do..he gives the RB one of those high hits thinking he will just knock the guy off his feet...not only did Ward lose a chance for a tackle for a loss, the Ravens back turns the play into positive yardage.

I can guarantee that Williams ran that play back and forth during the film review in an attempt to drive the point home to Ward..this is the reason you don't tackle high in the NFL..especially if you are a 5-11, 185 pound CB.

Hopefully Ward will learn from that mistake.

Grading all 32 first rounders after Week 5

Week 5 of the NFL regular season schedule has been completed, giving us a larger sample size to delve into just how each of the 2018 NFL Draft first-round picks has fared in their respective action so far. Some of the 32 first-rounders have not qualified for a grade either based on small snap counts or not playing altogether. On the other hand, some players have jumped out of the screen and have helped strengthen their teams.

Through Week 5 of the 2018 season, here are how each of the 32 first-round rookies from the 2018 NFL Draft has graded in their first two weeks:

PICK NO. 1: BAKER MAYFIELD, CLEVELAND BROWNS
2018 SEASON GRADE: 89.9
The Browns’ first overall pick put forth yet another strong showing in Week 5 and he is now the only quarterback that has graded above 80.0 in three straight games this season. Week 5 against the Ravens, Mayfield had the best deep passing performance of his young career and completed 4-of-7 deep passes (passes of at least 20 yards downfield) for 90 yards, one touchdown, and a passer rating 141.4 – the fourth-best mark among Week 5’s signal-callers.

PICK NO. 2: SAQUON BARKLEY, NEW YORK GIANTS
2018 SEASON GRADE: 75.9
Barkley’s game-to-game production continues to be consistent even if his play-to-play production remains erratic. In Week 5, the second overall pick once again surpassed 100 yards from scrimmage, but 50 of those yards came on the ground via two breakaway runs (runs of 15+ yards), and another 57 yards came from a catch from a trick play pass that was thrown by wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. No matter how they’ve come, Barkley has still racked up 274 receiving yards this year, which is the most ever recorded by a rookie running back in the first five weeks of a season.

PICK NO. 3: SAM DARNOLD, NEW YORK JETS
2018 SEASON GRADE: 52.7
Darnold earned the highest single-game grade of his career in his Week 5 matchup against the Broncos after he completed 10 of his 22 attempts for 198 yards and three touchdowns. Like Mayfield, Sam Darnold had a career day when it came to stretching the field and completed two of his three deep passes for 111 yards, and two exquisitely thrown touchdown passes to wide receiver Robby Anderson. It was a promising performance, but it wasn’t without fault, as Darnold managed an accuracy percentage of just 60.0% when throwing from 1-19 yards downfield – the worst mark of the week.

PICK NO. 4: DENZEL WARD, CLEVELAND BROWNS
2018 SEASON GRADE: 78.9
The Browns faced their fair share of criticism for taking the former Ohio State cornerback ahead of Bradley Chubb in the 2018 NFL Draft, but five games into the season, it looks like they made the correct decision. It was business as usual for Ward in Week 5 against the Ravens, and from 14 targets, he allowed just five receptions for 60 yards, logged an interception and yielded a passer rating of only 19.9 on the throws into his primary coverage. Over the last five games, Ward has allowed an average of just 0.92 yards per coverage snap, which is the best mark among first-year players at the position.

PICK NO 5: BRADLEY CHUBB, DENVER BRONCOS
2018 SEASON GRADE: 64.1
After starting the season off in very strong fashion, the fifth-overall pick of the draft has simmered down a little bit over the last three weeks and has earned game grades of 47.7, 56.7 and 59.5 in Weeks 3, 4 and 5, respectively. Week 5 against the Jets, Chubb was limited to a single quarterback hurry on one of his 18 pass-rushing snaps and managed just a single stop on 23 run defense snaps.

Yeah, we'd be sporting Rosen & Chubb if I had anything to say about it. Five weeks in, I'm happy as hell Dorsey went a different direction. Not to mention Chubb, Avery & Calloway. With the possible exception of Chubb, the other two were nowhere on my radar. And I wanted Sony Michell over Chubb. So happy with our draft so far, even if it does take 3 years to see if it's a good draft or not. wink

I was all about the Darnold at #1, and screamed at the TV when they called Mayfield. But I was one of the few who wanted Ward at #4. Early in the process I was on the Fitz train, but after the FA pickups, I saw Ward as the best option. I thought Chubb was an unnecessary luxury when we already had Garrett and Ogbah.

I followed the dude in college and he is a very solid tackler who displays great fundamentals. Williams was out of bounds on his comments.

vers...you don't know and neither do I know the point Williams was trying to make with his comments about Wards pre-season tackling.

It was my opinion that Williams was concerned about Ward injuring himself while tackling and emphasizing what he expected from Ward. Best I can tell, Ward and Williams are on the same page now because we haven't heard any more about Ward's tackling from that point forward.

While Ward's tackling technique has been good, what did you think of Ward's tackling technique in the on play I questioned against the Ravens..where Ward decided he would just blast the Raven off his feet for a loss..it was a one on one tackle in the Ravens right flat.

The result was Ward failed to knock the RB off his feet and instead of a loss on the play for the Browns, it ended up being a first down for the Ravens.

Do you think Ward used the technique Williams preferred he use in that situation?

Pastor mark...feel free to chime in...

Was very happy with both our picks. Ward was a pleasant surprise but was a Ward fan over Chubb for the first pick on defense. Speed kills and his skill set is amazing.

Here is the kicker...

The kid is going to get Better. He will have a full off season with our Strength and conditioning coach and he will get over 190 pounds and actually get faster just like Devalve did as well as Schobert...who actually lost weight for his speed.

But he will be more knowlegeable and I remember a presser from Dorsey on the teachings of Williams how even in man to have Ward get use to putting his eyes on the QB and that HE WILL BECOME...Become and INT machine.

I will predict this one thing. Next year, you will see HARDLY ANY PASSES come his way. He will be that good!

If you noticed he went to the other side to cover Brown. It will be so year by year and I can't wait for the rivalry of AB vs DW. Kid is so so good. Get us another Dorsey...keep the Dynasty growing and thank you so much for putting together a Personnel crew working with Analytics to come up with a kid of the caliber of Ward!

Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off!
Go Browns!

He used to wrap up. now he chips with his shoulder. I have no idea why GW is teaching the DBs to tackle that way instead of wrapping up. Is this something particular now to DBs in the NFL? Anyone know?

EO..I agreee, the Ward pick was simply outstanding on Dorsey's part. The Browns defensive backfield needed to be improved and the addition of a shut down corner was key.

To many fans, a missed tackle such as the one Ward made in the first half against the Ravens seems minor..but to a defensive coach who is attempting to instill sound tackling technique, it drives them nuts.

I've focused on the Browns defensive backfield and the improvement they have shown in their tackling this year over last year is like night and day.

It is the sign of a "well coached" football team when you see players pay attention to the basics.

Well coached football teams and winning just seem to go together.

the only weird thing to me is that it seems like there's 1-2 drives per game when our defense randomly goes into a funk ... misses some tackles, soft coverage, no pressure, etc.

I think it's just fatigue, but then the next series they're GOOD again. Lol it's a good defense no doubt. Just wish we had no lapses

I gotta admit, I wasn't sure about either of our 1st rounders... But man, was I ever wrong.. So happy to be this wrong.

Baker is showing all the right signs and Ward is already playing like a guy that's been out there for years.

Daman...on the Mayfield pick, I read some stories about what Dorsey did with his time after the Chiefs and Dorsey decided to part ways. Dorsey mentioned that he had watched Mayfield play several times last fall.

Before the 2018 draft I thought about the number of times Dorsey had personally watched Mayfield play and thought, you don't spend time watching the same QB unless there is something you like.

I wasn't sure which QB Dorsey favored but I was not shocked that he picked Mayfield.

The Ward pick over DE Chubb made sense because the Browns had already invested heavily in the DE position, so it seemed logical that Dorsey might favor Ward.

So far, it looks like Dorsey and his support staff did their homework and made the best picks for this team.

This team should only get better as time passes.

I think because they are usually giving up 25-50 pounds to the running back, they do not want their DB's wrapping b/c they are concerned with them injuring their shoulders.

I was on the Ward train. But That was at 4. I was hoping TT would have been better and at #1 we would draft Barkly or Chubb. I was not as high on Chubb for the Browns because I felt Ogbah was a solid DE, but would not have been too upset if we went all D with our first 2 picks. Ward was a no-brainer to me considering how bad the defensive backfield was last year.

Hindsight…. I am soooooo glad we got our QB in Mayfield.

I hope Ogbah picks it up a bit because in my opinion he is the only player that has not flashed on this D yet.

Why do we assume Williams is teaching Ward to tackle via the hard hit - especially when the league is cracking down on those kind of hits that often will have the HELMET come into the action. Concussion can ruin Ward's career - I see him using his speed and crashing down on the edge rush. True, but I don't see Williams poo pooing wrapping up via the waist and hands behind the knees. Especially from an undersized guy.

As for the 2018 draft... my dream was Mayfield (thought that the NFL and Browns would never go for a 6' QB as there has been a bias on great QBs under 6'3" as I saw Brees drop to the 2nd round (#32) and I saw Rodgers drop to later first round after I viewed him as a possible overall #1 QB.

But I wanted us to come out of the 2018 draft with Mayfield and Barklay if you can imagine those two together. But I was shocked the Giants took Barklay who btw is living up to everything he was said to be...but what good is that if that is all you got. Just like AP before him...a great RB cannot carry the team in this NFL and Barklay is a great receiver not only a RB. Combined with Mayfield we would have the best offense in the NFL. And build on it with drafting OL. Along with a Defense that is getting better. But that was me...once he got taken and we would go D with the #4 pick...I was so in favor of Ward cause of the position he played and because of his SPEED!
