Quinn not even close to playing for Browns Rookie quarterback has a long ways to go if he wants to play this season Tony Dejak / AP Updated: 8:35 p.m. PT Aug 17, 2007 The first thing I notice about Brady Quinn is his guns. They don't belong on a quarterback's body. If he pulled a Hulk Hogan and kissed his biceps, it would be understandable. Cleveland's quarterbacks are warming up before the first open practice since Quinn ended his 11-day holdout. Derek Anderson, Charlie Frye and Ken Dorsey are throwing darts, but not Quinn -- in between lobs, he's furiously wheeling his right arm in circles, trying to get loose. Too late. The horn blows. The $30 million gun hasn't been loaded. Quinn hesitates. "Hey, Brady. You want to play or what?" snaps offensive line coach Steve Marshall. Oh, Brady wants to play. Brady wants to start. But he's nowhere close to ready. Right now, he's the worst quarterback on the roster. In 11-on-11 drills, wideout Kendrick Mosley turns left as Quinn's second throw goes right. Quinn's third throw sails 10 feet over tight end Ryan Krause's head and lands 15 yards behind the coverage. Quinn displays the touch of an 800-pound gorilla on his next several passes, nearly ending the life of a receiver in the flat before an "Easy, big fella" gesture from quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer saves the day. After practice, Romeo Crennel calls Quinn "a young colt that's been tied up in the barn for a while." It will get better. Quinn, an Ohio boy who dreamed of playing for the Browns, isn't here to run the scout team, as he did for two days leading up to the preseason opener against the Chiefs. He is big, strong, fast and durable -- by far the best athlete among the Browns' quarterbacks. And though his accuracy is suspect, he plays with a spirit and joy that this depressed organization desperately needs. "People are excited," says Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown, "and we don't want to lose this excitement because this kid is the future." The question is -- and you don't need me to ask it for you -- when does the future begin? "If it were up to me," says Quinn, "I'd love to be in there as soon as possible." Easy, big fella. Quinn has about as good a chance to start the opener on September 9 as Notre Dame has to beat Southern California on October 20. It's possible, you know? But very unlikely. Frye probably would be Crennel's and offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski's pick if they had to make the call today. If not the conservative Frye, then the rocket-armed, cement-footed Anderson, who has a fan in general manager Phil Savage. Neither Frye nor Anderson will ever be Drew Brees to Quinn's Philip Rivers. At the longest, Quinn will sit on the bench for one season. But that will happen only if a) the Browns are in contention for the playoffs, or b) Quinn doesn't turn it on in practice. The former, at least, is as likely as Notre Dame losing to Duke on November 17. The latter? Hey, these things happen. The list of great QBs who waited their turn is a lot longer than the list of those who started from Day 1. And don't forget about Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler, each of whom embarked on his career holding a clipboard. What the heck, a prediction: Quinn will start his first game in St. Louis in Week 8, right after the Browns' offweek. There will be extra time to prepare, there will be no chance of him getting booed at home, and he'll miss the division rival Steelers, Bengals and Ravens the first time around on the schedule. He'll also miss the Patriots in Week 5. Back to that practice. As Quinn started to walk off the field to meet the media, Braylon Edwards, the team's top receiver, grabbed the hotshot holdout by the elbow. He made Quinn take off his jersey. Edwards put it on, rolled up the sleeves and held his arms far from his sides to emphasize the assumed bulk. They laughed. And then they played catch. It was a gesture of acceptance. And a glimpse at the future. Source

Commentary Rushing in Quinn risks replay of Couch story Saturday, August 18, 2007 3:30 AM By rob oller Tim Couch nearly became a corpse in Cleveland. With that in mind, it's easy to see why Brady Quinn holding a clipboard tonight against Detroit and throughout the season is the best thing that could happen for Quinn and the Browns. The less Quinn plays, the less chance he has of becoming Couch, who took such a beating -- from defensive ends and from fans -- that it's impossible to know for certain whether lack of talent or lack of protection turned the No. 1 draft pick into a relative bust at quarterback. The Browns' offensive line no longer resembles a dorm-room refrigerator full of NFL leftovers, so the pounding that Couch endured in his rookie season of 1999 wouldn't happen today. On the other hand, Cleveland isn't expected to shatter NFL scoring records, either, not with a "Just East of the West Coast offense" that resembles the San Andreas fault in its instability. Charlie Frye has 18 NFL starts, and that's a 30-page resume compared with fellow third-year pro Derek Anderson, whose 3-handicap golf game shows more consistency than his arm. Put it this way, when fifth-year quarterback Ken Dorsey is the guy you're counting on to show Quinn the ropes, it's probably best if Quinn watched from behind those ropes this season. And I say that before even getting to the Browns' receivers -- Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow Jr. and not much else -- and running game, which will feature a 27-year-old Jamal Lewis who resembles a battery found in the back of a junk drawer: more energy than you thought, but who knows how long it will last? Add a pedestrian defense that will force Cleveland's offense to put up some points, and Quinn's 11-day holdout could be a blessing in disguise, if the Browns can bridle their enthusiasm and keep the Dublin native on a strict snail's pace toward his eventual starting role. Quinn's holdout put him far enough behind Frye and Anderson that he can, and should, use the late start to watch and learn instead of trying to play catch-up. Studying the game from the sideline will allow the No. 22 draft pick time to adjust to all aspects of the NFL without making mistakes that Browns fans did not pay to see. The holdout also is a trusty alibi the franchise can use to diffuse controversy should Frye or Anderson struggle early. The Browns can quiet the crowds clamoring for Quinn by pointing out that he is not up to speed because of his late arrival. That won't sit well with Quinn, but he and the team are best served by letting Frye or Anderson play human shield for a while. Couch, who is competing for the No. 3 quarterback spot in Jacksonville, probably would agree. The plan entering the Browns' expansion season of 1999 was for veteran Ty Detmer to start the season and groom Couch to take over later. But coach Chris Palmer panicked after losing the opener to Pittsburgh 43-0 and benched Detmer in favor of Couch, who by season's end had become Tim Ouch. "If we're going to take our lumps like that, we might as well start (Couch) because he's going to have to do it sooner or later," Palmer said then. Wrong. Better later than sooner. There are different ways to break in rookie quarterbacks. Carson Palmer didn't take a snap his first season in Cincinnati (2003) as the Bengals sat him behind Jon Kitna, but Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger went 13-0 in regular-season games in 2004 before struggling in the playoffs. There's no guarantee that Quinn would bomb if he were to become a starter in the early weeks of the season. But also there is no assurance that throwing him out there in week three or four would right the ship if the Browns get off to a miserable beginning. And it could kill his confidence and potentially cut short his career, something no one wants. So now is the time to be patient, because, as Couch could attest, it sure beats becoming a patient. Rob Oller is a sports reporter for The Dispatch. roller@dispatch.com Source I don't agree with his assessment of the "pedestrian defense" but he does make some of the same points I've been expressing. Although, I do not agree with the "Couch analogy", it's a different team & regime.

It may be a updated article, but the material seems to be from his first day of practice.
Kind of a hatchet job IMO.

Talk about negativity. I think Joe Jurevicius is worth mentioning as a receiver considering he has such good hands. Still looking to see about Tim Carter as a slot receiver too...

And like St. Louis is any better with putting pressure on Brady to score every drive to keep up with the Rams offense?

That's exactly what it is.......it states it's from the first open practice after he ended his holdout.
Not news.

Stylish to crack on somebody in print. BQ is like my little brother growing up: I will kick him around (fans) if he needs it; but nobody else gets to (or needs to!) mess with him. He seems too loose; hope he figures it out Dem Browns of Old Were Dem Browns of Gold! May the Elf be with us! Get some more wins!

Well, after all that, in light of what happened tonight, he's convinced even me that he should at least be allowed to compete, seeing time with the ones. Happily eating a liitle crow here.

I like to feel/be the same way. The kid needs his shot.
Just don't be disappointed when the Browns are 2-6,...1-7 after the first eight, Romeo is gone (hoohray,..!! I don't believe he can lead a fly to excrement), the offensive line is still a shambles (it took Pace 2 years to get the Rams good), and the defense cannot stop the run, despite Wimbley having 48 sacks.
Just my two cents.
Milt Morin, Bill Nelsen, Dick Ambrose,....men who gave it everything and still got their asses kicked. Now we just just get our asses kicked.

I agree.
DA ran 4 pass plays vs Detroit's 1st string D. 2 completions and 2 turnovers. And 2 timeouts on one drive in the redzone that resulted in zero points. What were all the to's for then?
But he was 4 of 5 with the only incompletion being a drop vs their 2nd string D. Patting stats vs the 2nd stringers isn't a good way to win the starting job.

I can't fault DA for either of his turnovers. The 'fumble' was the RT getting beat and there wasn't a whole lot DA could do. On the INT, there were two problems: someone ran the wrong route and the two guys ran into each other causing one guy who would have been there for the catch to pull up and stop, and the other guy slipped and fell causing him to not be there either.
That said, still not impressed by CF or DA.

The INT and Fumble by DA and the INT by Frye aren't what's bothering me this morning.... (well, they do bother me, but it's preseason so you gotta expect that stuff I guess)
What's frosting my cookies is the leadership or lack thereof by both Frye and Anderson... And the Oline penalties...
I think,, the Oline penalties are as a result of just not being familiar enough with the O yet.... I hope so anyway. If I'm right, then with practice and some coaching, that could be corrected..
But leadership is something a player has or doesn't have.. I didn't see that with Frye or Anderson last night.. I did however see it with Dorsey and Quinn.
I don't know what that means except that if Frye didn't have more game experience, I'd be pulling for Dorsey to be the starter come Sept 9th with Quinn as his back up until such time as Quinn makes the move up.
I understand that that's a radical departure from my stance a mere day ago, but it is what it is... I hope I'm not jumping to conclusions here.

The problem is he still threw the ball towards the endzone after seeing this. Either that, or didn't look where he was throwing.

I'm with you guys... start dorsey. He actually seems like he has a grasp of what's going on... unlike the other two bozo's. Make Charlie #2 and Brady #3... he still has much to prove.. cut anderson... he's worthless at this point imo.
If dorsey falls on his face in game #3 we have charlie and at some point quinn...

Nothing wrong with a changed opinion. It is the sign of a mind that reasons.
I agree...Dorsey might be the next best QB on this team behind Quinn.
For whatever reason it got popular to say Dorsey sucked.

LOL,,, yes, lately I've changed my opinion about a lot of things,, Paid a bunch of money to repaint my Z and now I want it to be a different color....Very expensive change of opinion. Anyway, I'm not sure if I ever thought that Dorsey sucked. I probably had moments when I thought so.. But I've come to realize that experience can be more important than pure physical talent.. Frye and Anderson both have way better physical tools,,, But look at how poorly they ran the offense yesterday,,, and frankly to a point, last week also. (I gave frye a pass on last week due to it being a new O,,,, but no more passes are available) As much as I see Dorsey being more valuable than Frye and Anderson,, I suspect that Dorsey won't get a serious look as a starter.. Too bad.... But between Anderson and Frye,, I reluctantly lean towards Frye... There can be lots said that Frye didn't have good line play last night,, basically a true statement, But he also didn't lead them and make them play better for him.. that's a lack of leadership.. And that scares me more than the rumors of a weak arm, or small hands... I don't know who played in front of Dorsey or Quinn, but they played better for them... Again, I don't want to make too big a deal of it, but this issue can be real damning for Frye and Anderson... I question both of them..

"for whatever reason it got popular to say Dorsey sucks"
There is a good reason for that. Last year Dorsey was # 3 on the depth chart and when he did get a chance, quite frankly, he sucked. If Dorsey earns the starter job it will be a big surprise. But stranger things have happened and there are still two weeks to go.

Only thing that worries me is that next week is when the starters play the most time. I'd love for RAC to pick a first team offense and stick with it for 2 quarters. Then parse the rest up between the other guys. Then the fourth week start Dorsey or Quinn.

Peen, I take it you haven't watched many Ken Dorsey games. Last night Ken was playing backups and throwing a lot of 10 yard passes. If you really watch, you do notice that he doesn't have much of an arm. This leads to problems. It doesn't matter how good you are, the defense will scheme it apart.
I've seen a couple games of his in SF. He threw interceptions and he couldn't move the ball at all. The end zone was foreign. Trust me, the guy is a backup. For the reason of his arm and may be a few others, he doesn't have it and shouldn't be our starting QB.
I expect Frye to begin the season, Derrik Anderson will get cut or traded by the time that he must be off our roster to make the 54 man.
Frye has not shown up to play, especially last night where he simply wasn't moving the ball. But against KC I didn't think he was as bad. We know what we got with the guy, and these games don't even count. I really don't think we wanna see Ken Dorsey start QB for our team. You'd see none-to-one touchdown one or two maybe three interceptions and not many passing yards. Sorta like what we got last year.
Ken Dorsey is our number 3 guy, only making the roster over DA because of his clipboard skills.

I think this is Dorsey's last stop. I know he's not old, but he's already shown that he's just not gifted enough to get it done on the field against 1st-stringers (both in SF and here). I can't imagine why somebody else would bring him onto their roster.
Offer him a coaching position.

You must realize that Dorsey was going up against 3rd stringers. 3rd string defensive players are no where near the talent as starters.
Put Dorsey in against some starters and you'll see why RAC has him 3rd on the depth chart behind CF and DA.
Top 10 QB Rating's of the preseason so far 1. Matt Hasselbeck - 1st string 2. Kurt Warner - 2nd string 3. Drew Olson - 4th string 4. Steve McNair - 1st string 5. Charlie Batch - 2nd string 6. Brady Quinn - 4th string 7. Alex Smith - 1st string 8. Kellen Clemens - 2nd string 9. Jason Fife - 3rd string 10. Billy Volek - 2nd string
Notice that only 3 play against opposing teams starting defense. It's much easier to pick apart 2nd and 3rd stringers for a backup QB, than it is for any QB to pick apart a starting defense.
That's why you shouldn't read much into what QB's do against anybody besides the starting defenses.
Leftwich last night 2 of 6 for 12 yards vs TB's starting defense 4 of 6 for 69 yards vs TB's 2nd string defense
Kitna last night started really heating up when Perry (#33 for us) entered the game. He just kept throwing at Perry play after play. Kitna noticed a guy that isn't starter level in the game and ate his lunch.

The reason that Dorsey will probably never be a significant starter in the league is that he cannot make all the throws required of a NFL QB. This limits the available playbook and makes the defensive approach to the Browns a bit simplier. Because of this, he will tend to drop on the roster depth charts of a team.
He can play, he is just not the best option.
Chad Pennington has similar limitations, but does OK.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

You must realize that Dorsey was going up against 3rd stringers.
Menza, I was born at night,, but it wasn't last night..
Of course I know that he was going up against 3rd stringers... and you know what., his team was made up of 3rd stringers as well... why is it that we never say that?
Anyway, I don't think that thing with the top 10 back ups mean a thing really in this case Mensa. We are,,, at least I am, comparing apples to apples..
3rd stringers against 3rd stringers... In the end,, all that Dorsey has really earned is the chance to see what he can do with and against 1st teamers and in my eyes,, so has Quinn...
When it's all said and done, the winner will be our starter on the 9th... it's really that simple.. But for anyone to argue that Dorsey or Quinn don't deserve a shot based solely on thier performance last night simply has an unreasonable problem with these two guys that is unfounded.. JMO however
Now, having said all that, I fully expect Charlie Frye to start the season as the MAN.... I expect that Anderson will be cut. I expect that Quinn will be either 2 or 3 but, as they say in the music business,,, with a bullitt (meaning he's moving up fast).
Unless Charlie (boy, I'm really going out on a limb here ) doesn't perform at some point, you will see Quinn this year.. and I suspect he'll have his share of problems and rookie mistakes...

P-Dawg...... I hope to god that Romeo Crennel understands this. It is obvious to everybody that the time to cut bait with either CF or DA is now.

I can't fault DA for either of his turnovers.... On the INT, there were two problems: someone ran the wrong route and the two guys ran into each other causing one guy who would have been there for the catch to pull up and stop, and the other guy slipped and fell causing him to not be there either.
Otis.....he threw the ball into 3 defenders. No matter what "circumstances" surrounded the play it was a horrible throw... he doesnt get a pass on that one. The fumble wasnt his fault.

What's frosting my cookies is the leadership or lack thereof by both Frye and Anderson
It is truly sad and pathetic that niether one of those guys has the stones to take control of the team and sieze the opportunity. Based on how they both have played, I would think that no matter who stays or who goes they both have demonstrated that they are back-ups at the very best.

Charger can you really say that CF or DA can make "all of the throws" either? I wouldnt lose face claiming either one can.

What Quinn did last night albeit against a prevent D and 3rd & 4th stringers is STILL more impressive than ANYTHING that Charlie Frye has ever done on the field. EVER.
We are in bad shape at the QB position folks.....Bad Shape. Best thing to do would be to Keep Chuck at the helm until he hands the Job to Quinn. It isnt an "IF" it is just a matterof when. I can take rookie mistakes from rookie. What i cant take is a lack of leadership or execution by our "starter"

Well, after all that, in light of what happened tonight, he's convinced even me that he should at least be allowed to compete, seeing time with the ones. Happily eating a liitle crow here.

Delays, penalties, lapses of concentration & substitution issues all contributed to the debacle that was the 1st half. But that's a whole other discussion. Nothing that happend last night is going to cause either Charlie or DA from losing their spot. But Brady has definitely shown he deserves more time with the second or even first team. They are going to have to see him play with tougher competition in game situations... I just don't know how they'll do that yet. Maybe game four... perhaps he starts the 3rd quarter next week and if we witness a similar debacle by Charlie & DA, he get's major time the following week when the tendency is to play the starters sparingly. Whatever the case, he has shown the kind of poise, command and ability they can't ignore. If he continues to run the field like he did last night against stiffer competition, and more importantly, continues to put it in the endzone, they will have to make the tough decision if Charlie doesn't start clicking on all cylinders and start right now. I'm all about sitting Brady and letting him learn, but if Charlie or DA don't start making some things happen soon, Brady will get the chance to prove himself, and if he gets that chance, he could very well beat out the incumbent. Having said that, I think RAC needs to stop messing around and name Charlie the starter. If for no other reason than to allow him to settle in at the spot and get a rythmn in the game.
Side note: Whatever is to be said about Brady, (and those were two beautiful drives,) Barclay, Efram Hill, Jerome Harrison (especially), Steptoe, Sanders, Mann & Wright all deserve nods as well. Brady also got nice protection, helped by quick decisions and getting the ball into the hands of the open man. Those drives were sweet and I can't get it out of my head that this is they type of play I've always wanted to see, (decisive, move the chains, score consecutive times and repeatedly,) and is the reason I've wanted to see us draft a franchise type QB. The fact that we got a franchise LT & QB this year makes it look really good for the future.

Start Dorsey? Great idea. WHAT THE HELL"S THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE? Besides Dorsey ( and Quinn ) playing against a bunch of guys that will be working the window at Mc Donalds in two weeks and fumbling the ball in his own endzone, what has he done to warrent replacing Frye? Frye threw a ball that sailed on him, big deal. I saw one sail on Brady but there wasn't anybody in position to catch it. Damn, you guys make me want gauge my eyes out with a sharp stick.
