I haven't even started studying the available players in the draft, so thanks for the heads-up.

I think at this point, it's hard to say where we will get players at positions of need. I have always been a firm believer in best player available w/no more than a 2 spot swing for need.

I do think we are getting to the point in the season where we can start evaluating players/units. And I think we all have seen that Dorsey will make trades, use FA, and draft well. Thus, we have a lot of options.

Thus far, I think I'm the only one to bring up a kicker. I know it's not the first thing that jumps to one's mind, but I think it's really important that we at least get a "reliable" guy.

Ya ... sounds like we pretty much agree ... sounds like i’m Just a wee bit harsher on him ...

I’ve said the same thing a few times about him as a “swing” guy but not just between the tackles as he can play inside also ... i think thats his true value to a team ... he played a lot of games for Pitt the last two years at different positions ...

He’s like the “utility” infielder .. there doesnt seem to many of them anymore ... wonder why ... then again i dont follow Major League Baseball so i have no clue how I would know that ... *L* ...

Another thing, I believe I forgot to mention LBer in my first post. You, and a couple of others brought that position up and mentioned Collins.

I think you guys might be right in that we move on from Collins.

I don't know yet. I want to see how he progresses this season.

I think he might be roughly an average "ish" type RT in this league. There seem to be a lot of bad T in the NFL. As Vers said, he also might be more of a Guard type. Our interior line could be, in a couple of years, Bitonio/Corbett/Hubbard, and that might be pretty good.

I was looking at draft prospects myself a few days ago.

We are probably still going to be a top 10 draft position. There are several good looking OT's. It doesn't look as good for for the receiver position.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

We have played seven games so far. Four went to overtime. One a tie. The only game we did not compete in was against the Chargers.

Last year maybe were in two games the whole year.

John Dorsey was hired and turned over 60% of the roster.

Look at the free agents signed. Landry, Hubbard, TJ Carrie, Terrance Mitchell, Hyde, Fells, Gaines, Chris Smith, Stanton.

Trades. Shelton for a fifth, Tyrod for a third, Randall for Kizer.

Draft. Mayfield, Ward, Chubb, Corbett, Ratley, Callaway, Avery. Signed free agent Harrison.

That is what we see but there were a ton of other moves.
https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/team/transactions/

No matter how you look at it.

We have a real General Manager. We have a quarterback who can play. We have a shut down corner.

We are competing right now.

And that is with a new Offensive Coordinator. A passing offense with one veteran (new to the team). The rest a patchwork of rookie receivers and a rookie quarterback.

Now a rookie RB. A free agent rookie LT and a free agent RT (new to the team).

Hard to expect a smooth oiled machine wouldn't you say?

No matter what people may think of Hue. In my humble opinion I think he can coach. And for right now so does Haslam.

I also believe he is working well with Dorsey and I believe they respect each other. In addition the team plays hard for Hue and they respect him from what I can see from Hard Knocks and post game film.

I have no crystal ball for the rest of this season.

But what matters is what is in place. The team has improved immensely in one year.

And I believe with the cap space for next year and what Dorsey has shown so far in drafting players:

The Future is bright.

To hopefully steer things back on track:
No matter what else folks have to say, What Really Matters is there are a LOT of positives for this season. Regardless of the outcomes of individual games, the players are continuing to play hard to the end of every game (except maybe that Chargers beatdown) and we're in EVERY game! With all of this newness and youth and inexperience, we in EVERY GAME.

I was once quoted on here as saying "we have a dangerous mix of youth, inexperience, and inability." Well, the inability has largely been erased from this roster and the youth is getting experience and learning.

This team -as is - is getting ready to turn the corner.

Bonefish is one of my favorite Posters on the board...maybe cause when I skim through posts due to the coloring I stop to read one of my posts and what I already said...lol laugh

But Bonefish has a combo of reality, facts, football and not extreme in a path of opinion.

I really was taken aback at all the none discussion on this thread. A few instigate it, I won't call you all out, you know who you are.

Anyways, Bonefish, what is your point in this thread.

I take it that all of a sudden we think we should be Super Bowl contenders when actually in reality we are taking a step forward to being "COMPETITIVE" we don't wish to see that we as fans of course want to go to the SB. I get it. But "WHAT REALLY MATTERS" is that we continue to move forward and especially kick butt in our Divisional Games.

This is the perfect game to end our winless streak of AWAY games. To do it in Ketchup field with the Referees pulling for the Steelers as they do against all team let alone how they choose to screw us week after week. But what they are finding out is people are Actually WATCHING OUR GAMES AGAIN...they have to be somewhat fair.

But if we can win against these Massive Odds. We will put out a message to the entire NFL...FEAR US!

I remember growing up all teams FEARED coming to Municiple Stadium. No matter what our record was they were in for a rock em sock em Battle!

Time to bring us back to being relevant again!

Diam's first statement would be my response as well. Personally, I wouldn't have elaborated further. :-p

The only point that even approaches reality out of his 3 (imo) is the second one. I'm not a fan of how Hue seems to shirk accountability, because that reverberates down the chain to the players. Lack of accountability is the last thing we need to build a winning team/culture. Accountability is most critical right now, when we have the young talent that will turn the corner for us.

The other 2 points are only good for a chuckle.

Pitch and fork mentality, I have no problems with that, tells much more about you guys than of me.

Yes I have been on the other side of the fence in many, many occasions, but guess what most of the times I was right, and they were wrong....

Want to prove me wrong? Answer the following, which is obvious to you but not to me:

1) What players did Hue found and Develop? All great coaches have great players they have build teams around, Name one in Hue?

I started my post saying that Hue,for many of his defenders, didn't even have any input on the players he was coaching. So what's it going to be? Or is it that he is a good in talent evaluation and development, but because of [insert weird excuse] he wasn't allowed to do it here?

Indulge me, and then you can chuckle all you ant. Please give me an example of great player that was ever coached and developed bu Hue...

You can't can you?

2) I won't even other giving examples where Hue blamed others in public spaces... its just ridiculous we are even questioning this

3)I reaffirm the question- What's is Hue's identity has a coach? If we go through a list of good/great coaches we can see their identity on the teams. Now how are Hue's teams that what makes them good teams?

You guys have nothing that justifies your position and you question my position. If its a question of beliefs, that its ok with me, anyone can believe what they want, now being condescending to the critics of a coach with Hue's record is just absurd, and the prove that deep down you agree with us.

1) What players did Hue found and Develop? All great coaches have great players they have build teams around, Name one in Hue?

There is only one POSITION that can be under that classification of FOUND/Developed/Build a team around and that would be the QB. There is no other position, especially WR which you think is the most important position in the NFL...lol laugh

But QB so the answer to your question and remember he's been here for 2 freaking years its not like you are talking about a DECADE history. But the answer to your Question. Baker Mayfield, and he's obviously in the midst of the Development part of your question and since we just got him there is no Build around yet, although we did go out and get the BEST DARN FA WR we have ever gotten. We did get a RT and a UDFA LT that have been both decent so far.

HE DID move Bitonio back to LG and demand that LT be manned by Harrison and that was a great move to date.

So the answer to your question with a history of 2 years and now in his 3rd, Baker Mayfield.

What's your point. Yeah yeah being negative over the years makes you more Right than Wrong...but what you forget is the football regarding those opinions. Your football has been wrong in almost all occasions. And because we are turning the corner the football still is bad but now you are being proven wrong more than right. Most all other NEGATIVE POSTERS have actually turned the corner and think we got some positives, you and a couple of trolls are the only hold outs.

You have been so so wrong on Mayfield that alone sort of puts you out of the running. But I only try to post once in a while as its hard to do so as you are so way off base but I'm afraid there might be some KIDS who don't know better and actually believe what you say is true. Please tell me just what you are trying to state? Hue happens to be a good coach that took on and held together a team when we were doing the first TOTAL REBUILD in our history except for 1999 when we became a new franchise. We've always rebuild but had to do it Half assed cause we tried to have some competition to win. This time we did not. We just amassed draft picks, and by getting rid of veterans amassed a large Cap Space.

This was the first year that we got into the Positive part of the rebuild. Could Hue of won a couple more games to get us out of the #1 pick spot...probably but he played the hand he was dealt.

and WHAT REALLY MATTERS is not the record but the fact he kept the team believing in themselves and they did not give up on our staff or organization! That is what really matters and in that regard I think the world of Hue Jackson that was a feat that I don't think BB could have pulled off, the best HC of our generation!

Out of order, but here goes.

2. I said, this is the one I felt resonated with me the most. I explained why, and have kept consistent in the past.

1. There are players on the team now that are developing nicely. Garrett, Avery, Harrison, Mayfield, Higgins (off the top of my head). Higgins is a good example. Garrett is an ok example. Pryor is a really good example. He has worked closely with Hue, credited Hue, and did very well up until he left Hue. You'll probably argue that Garrett, Mayfield, etc. aren't because of Hue and are because of Dorsey/Williams/Haley/positional coaches/Chomps. My crediting Hue is no weaker an argument than yours that the head coach can't be credited with developing players... neither are particularly rooted in fact... and since you're making the assertion, the burden of proof is on you.

3. His identity, in the past, has been a strong passing attack with some creative playcalling, when he has the horses to do so. Continue to ignore this as much as you want. I only have so much patience when arguing with the brick wall.

Your own opinions/bias hangs over your head like a shroud. It covers your eyes and keeps you from seeing what's IN PROCESS on the field in front of you. The young guys are learning and getting better. The QB is doing franchise QB stuff, albeit very inconsistently. The position groups that we've focused on in the offseason are at least seeing sparks of light.
The turnaround we're attempting, from the starting point of a couple years ago, doesn't occur in one offseason. Many of the things we're looking for (things good teams do) don't start happening until the end of the rebuilding process. We're not there yet. Yet.

Thanks for the compliment Tab.

The point of "What Really Matters" is two fold.

One is the overall status of the team. First is the importance of a General Manager. People have beat down the topic of head coach. But to me the GM is the most important hire. In our history we have not had many to be proud of. Without the talent to evaluate players and develop a roster; you have no chance to succeed.

We have the right guy.

Two, our roster has vastly improved in one year. We are competing. Lead by a promising rookie quarterback. It has been a drought of epic proportions. The "shirt list" has ended. Baker has a chance to be really good. Because of who he is and the roster that Dorsey is building.

Think about that for awhile and let it sink in. We could very well have a franchise quarterback.

We are filling key positions with talent. Edge rusher. We have the best young rusher in the league. Shut down corner. Ward is more than we could have hoped for. LT, obviously we can't go overboard with Harrison here. But he has an exciting skill set that could develop into something very good.

Part of the thread was to promote good discussion about are roster. Who are keepers and who should go. That includes both lines, DB's, LB's, and all units.

I mentioned the elephant in the room later in the thread because I felt there was a bunch to chew on. However, we can not ignore ownership. Haslam has been far from ideal in many respects. But the Dorsey hire is encouraging. And my hope is that Haslam is learning the business.
=========================================

Lastly,

"No matter what people may think of Hue.

================================================

To me The Thread could have gone in many directions. And I was hoping it would generate good discussions. However, a number of people seized upon Hue.

So there was all that.

I have been watching this team for a long time. And outside of the Paul Brown and Marty era this is the most excited I have been.

So for me The Future is Bright.

Not sure we're really ready to go best player available.?
I know when I read that in yellow font ^ a couple posts up, I first thought, well, they cut a bunch of guys,

If they still had Corey Coleman, Josh Gordon, Carlos Hyde,
and I didn't think of the Lb's but did they cut Burgess?
and they had Mychal Kendricks

and wouldn't hurt to have Danny Shelton, oh well, Meder?

Maybe in May they were set up to go BPA, next year, but now they are back to square none.
Are they commited to Tyrod Taylor through the end of next year?

What is the plan? Can they stick with one?

I think we did the smart thing this year, and the thing we should do every year.... you go with the intersection of BPA and Need.
I see next year being no different.

The only thing I see changing is how "Need" gets quantified.
Early on, it is a hole in the roster at the Starter level. Later on, it will be proactively planning for a vacancy due to happen as we expect a veteran to move on - depth that becomes a reload.

I'm thinking they will rate the level of Need for each position (RT, WR, LB, CB) and then score that with the players available.... whichever they feels brings the best return if who we're likely to take, is my guess.

Given that a RT will, barring injury, take 100% of offensive snaps, I would not be shocked if that is the direction we go early unless we sniff out another Desmond Harrison.

What I feel people have to consider is that we're in a much better position now to look at fewer positions of need than we were before. IMO the two would be WR and RT. The secondary could always use talent no matter how much you have there. A stud LB'er can always be used by any team. But actual needs are far fewer than they have been in recent memory.

I haven't researched any college players, but speaking of LBers, I really like what I have seen of Devin White from LSU.

I've seen LSU three times and he flashes. He looks good in coverage and he is great against the run. He's tough. He's their leader. It's a damn shame he'll miss the 'Bama game because of a bogus targeting call.

The only thing I'll say is that this guy is going to be drafted very high, so it might be tough to get him.

Ideally you hope BPA meets need.

But when you are looking for a quarterback, or premier positions (ie. LT, CB, edge rusher) teams often reach.

I think we can now look at BPA honestly.

Need, you can reach a couple spaces but BPA should be the norm.

I just want a stud at any position but my preference for this team right now is a monster linebacker.

Ray Lewis, Butkus type. Captain of the defense. A guy who leads the defense. Calls plays and dominates.

So u want the old fashioned run stuffer? ... thats what i was getting at ... i think the Butkus, Singletary, types may not be in such high demand in that they were great against the run but not so good against the pass and at blitzing ...

Is there really a place for the run stuffing type LBer in todays nfl? ..

Has it evolved so much it’s rendered the run stuffers extinct? ...

Shobert has really opened my eyes to this ... is he the “new” breed of MLber in the nfl? ..

This is what one scout said about White, the LBer I mentioned a few posts up:

Quote:
Here is how one of the advance scouts summarized White:

"This kid could end up being similar to Ray Lewis. I'd take White over any of the linebackers this year. He's unbelievable. Unless he gets hurt or completely shuts it down to protect himself, he'll be the first linebacker drafted next year. He's the complete package. Great character. He's the signal-caller of the defense with a super football IQ. He's big, study, and stout enough for [middle linebacker]. Swift enough for [weakside linebacker], great athlete and coverage instincts. Stacks up the stat boxes, all of them. He's fast, an explosive tackler, and elite reactionary quickness.

"Right now, he's among the best and maybe the best I've scouted. Better athlete and versatility than [Dont'a] Hightower. More explosive, violent, and bigger than C.J. Mosley, same level of instincts. Better than Jerod Mayo at Tennessee. Bigger than Jonathan Vilma while being more violent and instinctive than D.J. Williams, same kind of freak athlete, explosiveness wise. Thumper like Sean Weatherspoon. Basically he's a bigger version of Roquan Smith in the 240-250-pound range. He's FUN to watch. Unbelievable stamina and motor. He could be the best linebacker ever to come out of LSU."

Ray Lewis was excellent against the pass. He had a ton of picks. Very smart.

When I think of a monster LBer or great LBer, I think of a guy who can play the run, rush the passer, and be good in coverage. They are three down guys and not specialists.

When Butkus came into the league. Before his knees became a target by inferior players.

He was big, fast, strong, instinctive and could cover.

LT was a monster obviously.

Butkus, LT, Lewis changed games.

That's what I want.

Looked up Butkis’ dimensions: 6’3”, 245. Kind of light in the ass for today’s NFL.

I do like all I’ve seen from the LSU kid, White, as Vers said. Where would that leave Schobert?

I floated the idea of trading a first and Jamie Collins for Patrick Peterson to some friends. It was an interesting conversation.

Interesting article about Kerryon Johnson.

I always follow guys who caught my eye during the draft.

Ward and Peterson would be dynamic together.

I'm not positive, but I think I saw something today about Peterson now saying he doesn't want traded.

I agree about Keuchly. Excellent player.

I will dig into White.

Ward adds so much to our defense. And with Garrett two cornerstones.

Now we need that backer.

Guys, I really hope you will check out Devin White. This dude is special.

He stands out in the games I have seen. He can aggressively get off blocks, and is really quick, while maintaining strength. One thing that really stands out is how guys go down immediately when he gets his hands on them.

I floated the idea of trading a first and Jamie Collins for Patrick Peterson to some friends. It was an interesting conversation.

In Butkis days OL were 260-270.

I don't who saw Butkus play? Long time ago.

But I saw him. He played on crappy Bear teams for most of his career. He was relentless. Played to the whistle every down.

He was unblockable. You would watch his games just to see him play.

Cut blocking and all kinds of dirty took his knees. At seventy percent he was still better than the rest.

He was great at every level. He was a true can't miss player from his first NFL play.

In the 60's the OL were closer to 250-255.

I know theres differences between the two, but when I see Devin White play I see alot ot Keith Bullock in him...great size to speed combo, flies around, and latches on to you.
