Frye steps forward
His taking lead in quarterback derby was biggest story among Browns camp winners and losers
Friday, August 24, 2007 3:24 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA -- Charlie Frye ended training camp yesterday as the Browns' No. 1 quarterback.

With Derek Anderson's futility in camp and Brady Quinn's late arrival, Frye has a loose grip on the starting job with two preseason games remaining. He will start Saturday against the Denver Broncos and expects to play the entire first half.

"I've taken most of the reps with the ones (first team) this week, so I feel like I'm ready to play," Frye said. "I'm ready to go out and just fine-tune everything."

The starting quarterback position was the team's biggest preseason prize, but Frye's body language and subpar performance say he doesn't feel like he has won. Here are five winners and losers from training camp:

Winners
LT Joe Thomas
The rookie left tackle did exactly what was expected of the No. 3 overall pick. He came into camp on time, quickly worked his way into the starting lineup and solidified his spot by playing well. Thomas has looked superb in run and pass blocking.

RB Jamal Lewis
No player had a better training camp than Lewis, who signed a one-year deal in the offseason and looks motivated. The Browns haven't had a legitimate threat at running back since the days of Kevin Mack and Earnest Byner more than 20 years ago. Lewis has shown he's skilled, has a nice burst and is powerful enough to finish off runs.

CB Eric Wright
The coaching staff was ecstatic when Wright was available in the second round of the draft. The front office believed Wright had the ability to start immediately, and with two preseason games remaining, the cornerback job is his to lose.

RB Chris Barclay
Barclay was not on the radar at the start of camp, but that has changed. Barclay makes things happen nearly every time he touches the football, which hasn't been often. He had the winning kickoff return against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first preseason game and caught a 30-yard screen pass from Quinn in the fourth quarter last week against the Detroit Lions.

LB Leon Williams
Williams was a player to watch based on his solid play at the end of last season. He has made plays from the first day of training camp and initially pushed D'Qwell Jackson for the weak-side linebacker job. Currently, Williams is filling in for starting strong-side linebacker Andra Davis (ankle), and it will be tough to take him out of the lineup once Davis returns.

Losers
QB Derek Anderson
Based on minicamps and organized team activities, Anderson was the early favorite to be the starting quarterback. He has more physical ability than Frye but hasn't responded well to open competition. Anderson has been inconsistent in practice and in games. His two turnovers (one fumble, one interception) in three possessions against Detroit likely sealed his fate as a backup.

OT Ryan Tucker
Tucker's first goal was to gain the Browns' trust after leaving the team in 2006. Yet about a week into camp, he was hit with a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's steroid policy. Tucker was a projected starter, but it's questionable whether the Browns will keep him on the roster in October when his suspension is over.

WR Travis Wilson
The Browns were counting on Wilson to step up in his second season and strengthen a thin receiving corps. Instead, Wilson has been inconsistent and has dropped passes. He went from a possible spot in the starting lineup to being on the bubble of making the 53-man roster.

RB Jerome Harrison
Harrison had big aspirations for solidifying the backup tailback job behind Jamal Lewis but has looked average. He had a fumble that was returned for a touchdown in the first preseason game and hasn't done enough positive things to erase that negative.

QB Brady Quinn
Similar to Frye, it's debatable whether Quinn can be placed in either category at this juncture, because his role with the Browns is yet to be determined. He is in this group for now because of his 11-day holdout. Had Quinn arrived on time, he probably would have the inside track on the starting job.

Might be the biggest disappointment. A 3rd-round pick at WR in '06 should be able to make an impact in a receiving corps that's rather thin. He has not, apparently.

Interesting viewpoint....

My take...

Quinn....

I think Quinn is a winner. When he did get into a pre-season game, he made the most of it, as did Dorsey. As much as I like Anderson, and think that his arm makes him a weapon to be reckoned with, I have to admit that DA is probably the odd man out.

Wilson...

Sorry to hear this about Wilson. It is probably true. I really wanted to see him add some depth to the WRs....

Tuck...

I think Tucker will stay with the team, and will add depth to the line. We've spent too much on the line to start throwing away starting quality OLinemen due to issues other than team chemistry or party drugs/weapons.

I went 2 of the first few days and I said Travis Wilson looked horrible and dropped the ball every time he burned someone, hes terrible and I have 0 confidence in him.

As for Quinn being a loser?... Right.... Good thing he kept that last because I would have stopped reading after that.

Agreed Lamp. Wilson will be a black mark on the Phil Savage era. The pick could have been used for several other positions.

If this kid can't step it up he will be the biggest disappointment by far.

This sucks. This guy came in last year saying he would be one of the best receivers in the NFL. I was counting on him to make a contribution this year maybe even our #2. Looks like he was a wasted pick

Sort of a stretch to say he had a fumble... he gave up on the play, but he never really even touched the ball... shouldn't the fumble be credited to Frye?

The only reason Quinn was a "loser" was because of his holdout. I think the writer is correct. If Quinn had been in camp from Day One, I do believe he'd be in the thick of things for the starting job, or at least much closer than he is right now.

As for everyone else, I agree with what he said. I'm disappointed in Wilson, too. He has size and speed, but the kid is just too darn inconsistent. I have a feeling he'll make the team and he'll be in during games due to injuries or needing to rest someone. We'll see real quickly if he can hack it. From what he's shown in the preseason so far, he's far from impressing.

I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Ditto. The self-proclaimed "best receiver in the draft" last year isn't even the best back up on the Cleveland Browns. And our WR corps is thin. Someone needs to step up in these next to games to give a little help to Braylon, J.J. and Kellen.

I sure wish this Walker guy would get his facts straight..

Anderson did indeed have two turnovers, but anyone with an once of brains understands that they were NOT entirely his fault. If he's going to talk about it, he should at least tell the WHOLE story.

And Harrison didn't fumble the ball that lead to a Touchdown in the KC game,, He didn't even touch the ball on that play. I still hold him somewhat responsible for not playing heads up,,,but he didn't fumble the damn ball either.

Otherwise, I understand and agree with most everything else.

Barclay returned the KO for a TD in large part due to Harrison's block...last year, you could not use those two words together (Harrison's block).

So...the writer blames Harrison for a fumble and gives no credit for the block on Barclay's return...then mentions Barclay's 30 yard catch & run w/o mentioning Harrison's TD play.

I like Barclay...but I like Harrison better as a RB.

If Barclay is a viable RB and we carry (4) of them...and if Cribbs is NOT a viable WR and cannot be counted on as a PR and say...Mosley plays well...then

I wouldn't be surprised if Cribbs got cut before Barclay...especially if Barclay can return punts.

I'm not predicting this...or even suggesting this...but if Cribbs proves inept at WR and PR...he just might be gone.

Travis...you're becoming a travesty of justice..you're supposed to show you're one of the best..not have the best mouth

And this is why I think James Walker is a loser..he puts BQ in the loser section because of the holdout.
Fact is they weren't going to start him anyway so it wouldn't have made a huge difference had he been to camp on time.
So since reporters IGNORE what the GM has said..they're LOSERS...

I agree. This was the only thing I disagree with. I think Harrison has looked okay, and imo has been better than Wright (although that's not saying much). Imo his goal of being the #2 RB is probably very realistic...........hard to call a guy a loser who is very likely to acheive his goal.

11 more days of practice, some snaps in the first preseason game, maybe more quality snaps in the second... it all helps. Would I put him on the big loser list? No way, not in the long term... ... but if the goal is to get him on the field "as soon as he is ready"... he might have cost himself a few weeks.

In the end he might have actually helped himself by allowing everybody to focus on the total mediocrity of Frye and Anderson for a couple weeks, which really only makes him look better...

Yeah that is really disappointing news. Wasn't he the guy that said he was the best WR in the draft that year? Our WR corps is thin, we could really use him if he could catch the damn ball.

Dude sometimes I wonder if they even watch the games...hehehe.

I didn't even mention BQ, because I just thought that was too stupid to respond to, but obvious I'm wrong. Oh and by the way how is Fry not on the same loser list that DA/BQ is then??? He still hasn't seperated himself from the 2 on the list.

I agree with him about Leon, and think that we might finally start seeing the end of the AD era...............which is good news for guys like me and you, but you know somewhere mensa and soup will be crying, becuase he had all those tackles...

Finally, let me say I have to also agree with him on Wilson. This one hurts bro, becuase I really thought this kid would be a solid # 3 for us this year, and would replace JJ the next. Well guess what we are going to need (again) next offseason??? Dude this is one position that is truly an endless circle.

This sucks. I was furious with the pick when it happened cuz I thought for sure we'd be going O-line since we had addressed the front 7 in the first two picks.

We SHOULD have gone O-line cuz we wouldn't have been in such a clusterfudge at the position last year had we had someone young with potential ready to step in for Andruzzi or Coleman. That's not saying our line would have been good, but think of where we'd be at right now in terms of O-line depth by doing what we did this offseason with the line by having a 3rd rounder on the roster.

Hm, last time I saw him he had six catches and a TD in one drive. That pretty much erases the fumble for me.

Maybe I need to be the new beatwriter down here..
First thing I'd do is beat up all these other ridiculous reporters
Oh I can you RIGHT NOW what we'll need next season already..
1-WR
2-TE
3-RB
4-DE
5-CB
In no given priority..
For those that doubt or say why would we need someone in those positions..just watch the season and you'll see why..

I think that in spite of Charlie being the local boy, Browns fan, most NFL experienced QB we have, w/ quite a fan base among Browns fans, STILL kind of gave up the second we drafted Quinn. Like he couldn't help losing a little bit the spirit that might have carried him beyond certain obstacles. Oh well, life goes one. I'm not crying a river over a specific player, if he's wearing brown & orange, I'm rooting for him. I'm hoping for the best for Charlie, no matter what happens.

This is a frustrating situation for lots of fans. The only positvie spin I can throw at it now is that maybe people should consider him still in his rookie year, due to lack of time on the field last year. I know, it sounds like a desperate cop out excuse. Let's just hope this guy gets it together.

Can't argue with DE, RB & WR (in that order) but what is it about the TE & DB positions that you feel are off season needs for next year?

I was the opposite....

When the draft occurred, we didn't know if Edwards or Winslow would be able to play. The only ones we knew about were JJ, Dropcutt, and Cribbs. We needed some insurance in case Edwards and Winslow were unable to play..... I was glad we picked up a WR....

Why, oh why couldn't we have picked Marques Colston instead...???

TE..I worry about how long Winslow can go..
He's like a WR in a TE body..
I think we'll need to invest in a athletic guy soon..in case that knee makes him a part time player.
CB-Booden worries me wtih his ankle and it may give him more problems..if it does this year we'll need another big corner to either make him a backup or replace him.

I would say BQ is the biggest loser SHORT TERM in this camp ...

he WASNT THERE ... that would qualify as a LOSER in those terms .. no??? hell he missed almpst half the practices .. didnt he???

BQ missed the entire installation of the O .... that makes him a LOSER in terms of camp as far as I'm concerned ...

but thats OK ... IT IS WHAT IT IS ..... and we'll all forget about it by November ...

This is one thing that worries me about this team, Our Offensive playmaker--the closest thing to an offensive identity that we have----is damaged goods.

Our #1 CB, the veteran leader of the secondary---is suffering from chronic injury.

Our oldest veteran offensive lineman has been plagued by off the field stuff the past two seasons.

It seems like the foundation of players we are building around is already sort of crumbling. We are getting guys in place around these "pillars," but the pillars are worn down to begin with.

But on the brightside, we have some guys in Kam Wim, Thomas, BE, and Steinbach that are going to be the veteran anchors in the future. Hopefully E Wright, BQ, and our Pool and Jones can join this bunch.

Yep your right, but I still wouldn't call him a loser, because imo the only thing that would have happened if he signed on time is that he would have won the job outright. Imo that isn't good for him nor the team neither short term nor long. Holdout or not bro, I would all but guarantee you he is looking the best of the QBs by the end of preseason. Care to wager how far ahead of those 2 he'd be if he was here day 1 of camp??

See I never wanted BQ starting week 1 against the Stoolers. I have been and still am a guy who wanted him coming in at around the bye week (preferably after). This way the OL gels, and he get's to see the Stoolers, Rats, and Pats D with a clipboard in his hand for the 1st time. Imo that's always been the way to go, because this way he gets to sit and learn for awhile, but he also gets much needed experience THIS year so we don't have to wait on him to be ready next year.

See by BQ holding out it helped both him and the team............both WINNERS..lol....thus fullfilling my master plan..lol

Definite possibilities. Although I'm hoping we get a few good years out of Winslow, especially if he doesn't have to be the primary receiver all the time. And still holding out hope Bodden is able to put to rest the talk about his injury prone nature. He's had a rough couple years, that for the most part (if I'm remembering correctly) are ankle related (so maybe he can come back) but prior to that he was pretty dependable. But you're right, either one of these guys goes down and we're shopping. The good news is it may not be crippling in that Kraus seems to be doing some things, and we are bringing along some nice depth at CB in McDonald, Holly & Fontenot, although none of those guys have Bodden's size (or skill at this point) and Kraus is no K2 or Vernon Davis. The other good news is we'll start to add depth at all positions by drafting BPA (after we draft a RB & a DE or two) and free agency won't be so desperate and we can finally enhance, adding those "final one or two pieces" to make those deep playoff pushes. But yeah, back to your point, we do need players especially at DE, RB & WR. I guess I'm just hoping we can stave off the injury bug for a change so we don't have to take a TE or DB because we lost K2 or Bodden.

In no given priority..
For those that doubt or say why would we need someone in those positions..just watch the season and you'll see why..

I would agree with all except perhaps TE and CB. Mainly because I don't think you can call something a need before it happens. If your scenerio holds true and Bodden and KW both are injury ridden again this year then I would have to agree with you. However, if that doesn't happen then we will be fine at those spots. Basically, until it happens it's speculation (although I agree it's a real concern).

As for the rest of the list I would agree with you (maybe disagree with the numbers of needed on a couple). Now let's prioritize a bit.....

1. DE
2 WR
3. RB
4. OL
5 TE
6 CB

I put TE and CB in there anyway, becuase I went with your scenerio. However, I would still put them last on the need chart, becuase those positions actually have depth that could perform adequatley behind the starters you mentioned..............the other 3 don't have starters...lol. I included OL, becuase I think it's very likely that we will need at least 1 of the right side replaced, and perhaps both depending on how KS fairs.

It all depends on your definition of losing is.....Mr. Clinton..lol.

1. If you think losing the opening spot on week 1 is losing for BQ then yeah he lost. Imo it means little and BQ and the team will be tons better for it 6 weeks down the road.

2. If you think him losing in camp would be him not performing well or being so lost that he couldn't play this year (my definition) then no I don't think he lost anything at all. From all accounts he's catching on rather quickly, and playing well when given the oppurtunity so far.

Like I said it depends on the definition of losing...........mine and yours are different.

It's just really wierd to see any kind of "need" speculation for next season on this MB which does not have OL at the top of the list...

As for KW's injury and Bodden's injury... you might add Bentley and Baxter to that list of "wait and sees". If Bentley comes back anywhere close to where he was before, that's great, otherwise, OL might still be in the top 3 of our needs next year... I know everybody is excited because it's vastly improved, but it might take one more solid addition to make it really really good.
