My bad. The link from the article was wrong.
It said he was the OC for Dorsey's KC teams from 2013 to 2015.
Wrong. I crossed checked.
Goes to show verify.
Anyway. He has a good resume. He is doing well now. And of course Haslam knows him.
Dorsey knows of him or somehow may know him.
Sorry for confusion.

bonefish, I am not wild about Flip. He was the guy who hardly ever ran it and even said something like I will abandon the run if we don't do well in the first few carries.
I understand that it is a passing league, but I don't like that mindset. I also saw a drop-off from Shanny to Flip. I also wonder about his ability to lead an entire group of men.
However, I do think he is near the top of possible hires.

I was thinking more about the family. No one wants to hear that stuff about their son or brother. FYI: Sashi Brown certainly has parents...he's also married...and has three children.

Happy birthday!
I think Williams would be happy to stick around as DC, or HC with his son as DC. He has players that can execute his scheme and a chance for Dorsey to get more of them. It's a pretty good situation to embrace.
Thank you =) Does Dorsey want him though? Williams is such an alpha male and so blunt spoken. The offense is not suddenly going to get better so it won't make a case for him to be HC after the season. I think it would be hard for him to get demoted back to DC without it hurting his pride.

Happy belated.
I have a feeling that Dorsey is going to want a strong, offensive minded coach for Baker.
Is it possible that Williams could remain as DC if the team and new head coach wanted that? I suppose it's possible. However, would be want to demote back t DC from head coach? I get the feeling that he probably would not.
Maybe we win our next 8, and he does become coach. Who knows? ;)I remember when Marty took over a 1-7 team, and finished with a 4-4 record under his leadership. I suppose it could happen. (though I don't think that 4 wins does it for Williams)

Knowing Williams' ego, I can't see him sticking around after going back to DC. That would lead to more discord, even if he were to stay IMO>

Lincoln Riley is the pipe dream best case scenario.
Matt Campbell is the really good, I hope it can happen scenario.
John DeFilippo is the real life scenario that I would probably talk myself into in a couple minutes pretty easily (you can also throw Jim Schwartz into this column).
Gregg Williams is the oh my gosh we actually won a few games and can't find anyone else scenario.
Jeff Fisher is the worst case scenario.
Riley and Campbell. Great. 2 dudes with ZERO NFL experience. Hopefully Dorsey goes for EXPERIENCE. Not these inexperienced wanna-be so called offensive geniuses.

I don't know Gregg Williams or his ego. I don't know if he would stay around and be the DC if the new HC wanted him to stay. But I thought I read something around the time he was hired here, that he didn't want to be a HC again.
I could be misremembering. I have no idea where to even start looking for something like that. Anyone else remember hearing that?

A "strong relationship" is something I felt would be something that takes time and level of closeness to develop. Not something that just happens overnight. True, its tough to know what was implied.
"Strong" as opposed to "GOOD" I don't think Williams has a complete knowledge of Baker that is true although possibly he has been asked as a Defensive Coach/Mind any + or - on Baker in his observations. Definitely will be relying on our QB coach as well as Kitchens a former QB himself regarding Baker's TOOLS
I see what you mean now, yeah I get it. Didn't read others to know what was insinuated by them

Any chance we look at Ken Whisenhunt? He took AZ to the Super Bowl and has the Chargers as one of the best offenses in the league. Experience as a HC and OC.
I wouldn't love or hate it really.

When you're a young guy, you have an entire career ahead of you. In the grand scheme of things one four year contract may give you some temporary clout and prestige but is it a real opportunity? If you're that good you know more opportunities will come your way. You are building a career and a resume'. You're building a legacy.
In the case of the Browns, I believe any HC candidate would have to look at the ownership in terms of stability. It seems every couple of years Haslam turns over either the coaching position, the FO or both. Each time he hires a new GM, that guy purges the roster and rebuilds. There's zero stability here. If I'm building a resume' and legacy, I would much prefer an opportunity where I believe ownership understands the actual structure of how the NFL works.
The GM answers to the owner. The HC answers to the GM. The OC and DC answer to the HC and so on. I think it's pretty easy to understand why someone who knows and likes a certain candidate would he hope he avoids the dysfunction that has continued under Haslam here. After all, it's easy to see that sometimes our fans lose focus as to where the real problem exists.
There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity. I guess one would have to determine which one
Pit, it's not like Haslams have hired and fired the Bill Belichicks of the world of the NFL....
He hired people he felt could win.. They didn't, he fired them..
His (Haslam) skills at picking people is suspect to be sure, but if you were a young HC candidate and you had belief in yourself to turn it around, you wouldn't have worry about it. You'd win and the rest would shake out fine.
I know there have been reports of Haslam sticking his nose into things where it doesn't belong.. I don't see, or haven't seen evidence of that happening until it was apparent something wasn't right.
If or when he hits on the right guy, he'll be a non factor.
I think he may have hit on a real good one in Dorsey...Dorsey will be part of the decision making team for the next HC.
Hope that helps!

I know there were issues when Kyle Shanahan was with Cleveland but who was he in conflict with? If not the Haslams, he would be an option.

To Whisenhunt's credit, he did reportedly smack down Joe Banner when interviewed by the Browns. The story goes that Banner criticized Whisenhunt's coaching staff in the interview, and Whisenhunt said "Who the hell are you to judge my staff?". Awkward!

You know I am drawing a blank on his time in Cleveland.
Since moving on from here he has had some good experience. I am sure he will be a candidate.
I was listening to Hue on First Take. Kind of interesting.
"The perfect storm was brought on by the Browns' record and Jackson's belief that Mayfield would have been better served in a different style of offense."
"I think you have to go back to Oklahoma and use all the concepts that made him be who he was, the first pick in the draft," Jackson said. "I think you do everything you can to play the way he plays, and you build your offensive football team and your system to his liking. Because that's going to help him be the best version of him."

So the guy they get is going to have to tailor the offense to fit Baker's strengths.
For sure it will not be Williams.
DeFilippo? I haven't watched the Vikings this year.
But he was with Pederson and Wentz at Philly. And they come from the Reid tree.
So West Coast offense is most likely the best fit for Baker.

???? He is San Fran's head coach, and he is also something like 2-17 in the past 2 seasons without Garoppolo. (and Garoppolo came to the Niners pretty much fully formed as a QB) I am not saying that he's not a good offensive mind, but when he has been given similar circumstances as Hue had ..... he's had similar type results.

I think Shanahan was here during the Farmer era. And the issue involved whether Manziel should play ( over Hoyer?). If his issue was with Farmer (which seemed a common occurrence). Then he might be up for a return to Cleveland.

Shanahan won an NFL game with a UDFA rookie named Nick Mullins at QB. I believe the Niners think Shanahan is a rising star at HC, and I'd agree. I see no way they'd let him go.

I just won't be inspired if we hire one of the re-tread type guys that are recycled around ... Mularkey, Whisenhunt, McDaniels, etc

Just watched some Devin White tape.
Damn. He is one those guys who makes everyone else look like they are in slow motion.
I only watched a little but he looks impressive.
I will be all over him as time moves on.

We are talking about Defilippo.
Read the article on the link. I think there is a misreading here. The run-on sentence in the original article is a bit muddled. "It’s worth noting that DeFilippo has history that tethers him to Cleveland — he was the offensive coordinator there under Mike Pettine in 2015 — and has received head coaching buzz since the San Francisco opening in 2016. He was also the quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia for the past two seasons under Doug Pederson, who was the offensive coordinator for John Dorsey’s Kansas City teams from 2013 – 2015." It's Doug Pederson who worked for Dorsey in KC, and Flip worked for Pederson subsequently.

That works which makes him from the Reid tree and the WCO.

j/c: I am at the point I don't think it matters who they hire. This organization is a complete mess. I was fooled because I thought perhaps Dee brought some sensibility to the organization in recent times. They kept Hue. They didn't blow everything up. The, of course......we find out that he HC can't overrule the OC on what to implement into the offense. Gee, that isn't bound to lead to huge discord. And anyone who has clue would know that Hue was absolutely right in wanting to put more plays in for Baker that played to his strengths, just like his college coach did. Instead, Haley said it was a "process" and he didn't tailor the offense to Baker's strengths. And the HC can't overrule that stupidity? The structure of this organization under Jimmy Haslam breeds dysfunctionality. I wouldn't come here and have my reputation ruined if I were a potential HC. I remember that Hue was the hottest coach in NFL the year we hired him and I kept wondering why in the hell did he accept this job? Moving forward, Haslam is once again involved in selecting the HC. Dorsey will be the next dude to be on the hot seat. Then the new OC and DC. Then the HC. The merry-go-round of misery never ends.

It is a mess. I feared all along Haslam would cave in.
I agree totally on your points about Haley and Hue. If the HC can't be a HC and make changes as he sees fit? He really is not the head coach.
The only hope is the influence that Dorsey may have.
Haslam knows he scored in the draft. That may bring some weight.
The hire may be the tip as to influence.
But if it ends up that GM, HC, OC, DC report to Haslam. And the buzz word is collaborative decision. We are toast.

From the sound of it, the problem with Hue is the same problem that Josh Gordon had: nothing is ever his fault; someone else was always always at fault for his failures. You can't have a head coach without accountability, and it showed with the way his team has played the last 3 years.

Hopefully Haslam sees this and fixes this quirk by making Dorsey the unquestioned head guy, and the head coach reports to Dorsey. Say Dorsey hires the next Sean McVay. We keep adding pieces with our extra draft picks and league-high cap space. Williams does his thing on defense. Mayfield progresses rapidly with an offensive genius of a coach. Playoffs in 2019, undefeated in 2020. Move over Rams, the Browns are the new class of the NFL. Hey, we can dream, right?

What I want, Haus, is for Haslam to let Dorsey decide who coaches and who doesn't, among all the other football decisions that have to be made.
I get Haslam wanting to be kept informed, to remain involved on some level, but I just basically want him to shut the hell up, and mind his own business with respect to football-related issues.

That would be ideal, but based on what Vers wrote, that doesn't sound likely. Here's to hoping they get it right. I have a few ideas for candidates in mind too, but head coaching hires are so hard to judge as a fan as we're not privy to all the details or involved in the interviews. That last part is key-- I look at it as going and finding the best coach (the interview process being crucial for this, but some owners/front offices obviously have a better eye for it than others) and not just going after the biggest name from the best team or marquee school.
