I didn't say he was flat out the wrong choice. I simply asked why he was chosen over others. I think it is pretty safe to say if he was playing on an average team he wold not have won the trophy. Makes me think the Heisman is more about circumstance than skill.
I have made my opinions clear on the Heisman in the past... Troy Smith is as deserving as anybody.... It takes several things to win the Heisman... first you have to be on the preseason short list..... if you're not, it doesn't matter how good of a year you have, nobody will be talking about you until wee 6 and by then, it's too late. Second you have to play on a team that gets a lot of national coverage.... so you have to contend for big conference championships and be in the the top 10.... Third, you have to play a skill position, QB, WR, or RB preferably. An OG can't win because they don't really keep stats for them and to pimp one, wouldn't give the media anything to talk about each week......
So, if you are on a very good team, on television a lot, and were a candidate from the beginning..... then you have a chance.

I was commenting on how freaking sad it is that a Heisman Trophy winner can't beat out what was once the worst starting QB in the league. Well looking at who ended up where, do you know the media frenzy if Quinn would have won the Heisman?
Can you even imagine the pressure the Browns would be subjected to?

Interesting thought, but I doubt Quinn would have been the Best Player in College Football last year... though he might have won as he is what the media craves.
I'd like to see it drop the fact that it is now an award for The Most Popular Offensive Skill Position Player.
As TMQ calls it now, it is not the Heisman Trophy, but instead it is the "Heisman Trophy for the Division I-A Quarterback or Running Back Who Receives Most Publicity" as no linebacker or offensive lineman has ever won, and just two defensive lineman and one defensive back were Heisman honorees.
It is the most overhyped, garbage trophy.... ever.

I know it is..I was just wanting you to imagine the pressure that would be on him and the Browns..
We're talking about Smith not even beating out Boilerroom.. Quinn would be pressured to start IMMEDIATELY..

I still think Troy's gonna make it in the NFL. He's obviously not nearly as polished as Quinn though. He's a developmental player, and his college career reflects that.
He couldn't thoroughly play the QB position until senior year, before that he was just a QB with mobility who beat Michigan. I was telling my friends before the '06 season "I wish Ohio State had a blue-chip QB who could make plays in the pocket and not run around like a Vick wannabe." I was promptly called an idiot. Turns out Troy answered my prayers.
Well in '06 I only saw Smith take off a handful of times if that, the rest of the plays he made were from the pocket. How he dissected Michigan's D was beautiful to watch.
It took Troy until his senior year to look like a legit NFL prospect, it may take about as long to turn him into a polished NFL QB. He's got the arm and the leader demeanor, I think height is overrated. My only questions I have are how much help did he receive from having 2 1st round receivers (ok, one first round receiver and one glorified punt returner), and how much the D was shifting based on his threat of running on those option-to-play action plays.
And for the record, I changed my opinion long ago, as in January. People are allowed to change opinions, right?

Buck, not directed at you, rather, directed at all who posted.
It seems like some people forget that one year ago, there was a giant debate as to who should be the first quarterback taken in the draft: Troy Smith, or Brady Quinn. Troy Smith had a great season and played masterfully against Michigan. Naturally, after the Michigan game there was no doubt as to who was deserving of the the Heisman. After all, Troy Smith beat Michigan- something that our own Brady Quinn could not do. Following the Michigan game, there was a lot of speculation on this very board as to what the Browns should do with the third pick in the draft. Some of that speculation centered around taking Troy Smith. Does anybody remember Troy Smith showing up at an OSU basketball game wearing a Brownie Elf jacket? -At that point, many of us felt that he was going to be a Brown, and that he was a shoe in for the first round. But, then, the 51 day layoff happened. The press, and public, showered Troy Smith with attention, and food. He showed up at the National Championship game out of shape, and not nearly as hungry as he was during the Michigan game.- Couple that with Teddy Ginn burning Florida on the first play of the NC game, then getting hurt, and you get the poorest offensive performance for an Ohio State qb since I don't know when, perhaps tje worst performance ever. Florida ends up stomping an Ohio State team that was out of shape, out of chemistry, had no Teddy Ginn, and didn't have the Troy Smith that all of us were accustomed to viewing.
What happens to Troy Smith? Well, that poor, poor, performance against Florida overshadows all of the great things he did during the year, and his draft stock falls through the floor.-(I've never seen anything like it.) The Ravens wisely draft him in the 5th round, and we'll see how it ends. He's from Cleveland, and I wish him the best of luck.

Actually, his poor performance had nothing to do with where he ended up in the draft. His height (or lack thereof), poor throwing motion, lack of discipline (gaining 20 pounds before the biggest game of his life and then showing up out of shape for the combines), and surrounding himself with his "posse" did far more to drop him than one poor performance. He is similar to Danny Weurfel....great stats in college but won't be able to take it to the next level.

Eric Crouch was cut by the Rams and later was signed by the Packers, and eventually asked for his release. He never played a game for any NFL team.
Didn't Crouch get moved to CB, but he retired because he only wanted to be QB? I'm not sure if he ever played a game at CB though...
Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...

Not to change the subject, but, If the minimum sentence for Vick is 1 year, and let's suppose that he gets the minimum sentence, he won't begin his sentence until December '07, he serves one year then gets out in December of '08, Plus, he might have to deal with a suspension from the NFL. So, at a minimum, Vick will miss the '07, and '08 seasons. Then, there's the possibility of the judge sentencing him to more than 1 year. I don't know if we will ever see him in the NFL again. Also, it is a pr nightmare for any team that signs him (except for the Raiders of course)

Anyone... Name the last H-winner to lead their team to the SB? What do the NFL careers of the last 5 H-winning QB's look like...
Carson Palmer is doing pretty good and Matt Leinhart is starting to look promising... The other three don't look like too good

CP and ML have huge NFL talent and upside... Size, arm, solid to outstanding mechanics, intelligence and the proto-typical NFL skill set and expeience, (Their college offensive system) TS is not close too these two... SB's, we'll see... Their respective teams...? The others, well you hit in the bullseye... NICE!!!

Are you still mad that we didn't draft Troy with the 3rd pick Ammo? Because I'm pretty sure they would trade him for Quinn even though he was picked 22nd. Troy does have a stronger arm, you know.

Please...we all know Harrington was worse than Boller.
In all reality, I believe the Ravens severely screwed Boller. He had improved a lot in his last three games in 2005, and was on the rise. He's still not a superstar, but I think he can be a starter in the league.

Um, no?
Quinn was the QB I wanted from January - Draft Day.
I'll admit to having a Thomas in the first/Smith in the 2nd or 3rd scenario in my head though. But I never ever expected Quinn to fall as far as he did and for us to go up and get him.

The Ravens trimmed their roster down to the 53 that will enter the 2007 campaign, and judging from the players that made it off the bubble, defense and field position will be major focuses.
Kicker Rhys Lloyd, who cleanly booted a 55-yard field goal Friday's preseason finale, earned a spot, as did fifth-round draft pick Troy Smith and talented free agent linebacker Edgar Jones. The Ravens also decided to keep safety Jamaine Winborne to add depth in the secondary and on special teams.
In the race for Baltimore's fourth receiver, Devard Darling beat out Clarence Moore, presumably because of Darling's contributions to special teams.
The Ravens parted ways with some familiar faces in what head coach Brian Billick has called the worts part of his job. Running back Cory Ross, who took over the kick return duties late last season when B.J. Sams went down with a broken ankle, and Brian Rimpf, a seventh-round draft pick in 2004 that started seven games during his time in Baltimore, were let go.
A surprise name on the cut list is Evan Oglesby, who had worked with the second team as a cornerback during the offseason. The fact that David Pittman and Derrick Martin started against the Atlanta Falcons could explain Oglesby's release.
"This is one of the toughest cut-downs we’ve ever done as a franchise,” said general manager Ozzie Newsome. “Several players we released today are going to be playing in the NFL this season. Overall, this is the deepest, most-versatile rosters we’ve assembled in the last four or five years - and that includes the two kickers.” Here is a list of the Ravens' final cuts:
80 TE Kendrick Ballantyne 72 DT Anthony Bryant 14 WR Romby Bryant 98 DT Atiyyah Ellison 48 LB Jamar Enzor* 82 TE Marcus Freeman 44 CB Willie Gaston 74 OT Mike Kracalik 18 WR Damien Linson 91 DT Keyonta Marshall 59 LB Joe Martin 84 WR Clarence Moore 63 G/C Ikechuku Ndukwe 25 CB Evan Oglesby 76 G Chris Pino 43 LB Ryan Riddle 69 OG Brian Rimpf 34 RB Cory Ross 67 DE Bill Swancutt 17 WR Matt Willis *waived - injured

Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

Posted: 09/01/2007 Heisman winner Troy Smith survives Ravens' final cuts Associated Press OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith made the Baltimore Ravens' final roster Saturday as the team's third-string quarterback. The former Ohio State star was not among the 20 players released as the defending AFC North champions cut the roster down to the mandatory 53-man limit. Among the notable cuts were former starting wide receiver Clarence Moore; offensive guard Brian Rimpf; running back Cory Ross, who led the Ravens in rushing this preseason; and cornerback Evan Oglesby. Since arriving at training camp, Smith has impressed his teammates with his attitude, work ethic and arm strength while struggling with his accuracy and decision-making. Smith completed 11 of 18 passes for 86 yards in a 13-10 loss Friday night to the Atlanta Falcons to conclude the preseason, but was sacked four times and intercepted once. Smith signed a three-year contract in July that included a $105,000 signing bonus. "I've got to continue to be the first one there and the last one to leave, and I will continue to do that," Smith said. The Ravens also cut defensive tackles Anthony Bryant and Keyonta Marshall; wide receivers Romby Bryant, Damien Linson and Matt Willis; defensive tackle Atiyyah Ellison; linebackers Jamar Enzor, Joe Martin and Ryan Riddle; offensive tackles Mike Kracalik and Chris Pino; guard Ikechuku Ndukwe; defensive end Bill Swancutt; tight ends Kendrick Ballantyne and Marcus Freeman; and cornerback Willie Gaston, Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press http://www.nfl.com/news/story;jsessionid...mp;confirm=true
