I am totally hopping on the Atlanta United bandwagon.
They have the best jerseies.
And all my friends are lit about this team.
It is weird how we never had a MLS team, and suddenly we get one and it fills Mercedes Benz Stadium to capacity. I get that Atl is a melting pot city, but where did all these fans come from.
So next mission is to get jersey, and then attend game.
Now Cle needs a team so we can discuss.

Back in the day, Cleveland used to have The Force soccer team. They should totally revive that. Since now MLS soccer is becoming a thing.
And now there is random rumblings that Cleveland might want a new stadium, if it had a (retractable) dome, it could work.
Because that's how ATL's stadium works, splits time between NFL and MLS. And other random events like concerts, college football and such.

So I have ordered this: https://www.fanatics.com/mls/atlanta-uni...76+z-8-44935221A lovely shirt in team colors. I determined I can't order a jersey yet because I'm not too familiar with the team yet. And picking a jersey with player name is personal. That could be a whole topic on it's own.

MLS is slowly becoming pretty respectable. Still not good enough for the big dogs, but as far as soccer in this country, this is the best the sport has had to offer. A lot of the past leagues would just fall apart.
I give them credit. I can't really get into it that much, but every once in a while I will flip on a game if nothing else is going.

Welcome Eve! I'm a Timbers season ticket holder (Thorns too, NWSL). Enjoy the ride and get to a few games - it looks like a great atmosphere.
Darlington Nagbe (#6) was as Timber and both played at St. Eds in Cleveland and at Akron as a collegiate. We traded him to you guys this offseason.

So I'm going to the game with my guy friend on Sunday!
I'm excited!
Will be my first MLS game, and my first time in this stadium! So I get to see what the hoopla is about.
Happy happy.

Enjoy the game!
I know several Crew fans that are very engaged in fighting for their team - several other teams fans are as well. Few seem to want this to happen outside of Austin.

Now Cle needs a team so we can discuss. It is crazy....soccer is booming. He we don't have a MLS team, but a local maybe semi pro team. They draw 10,000 every game. The diehard fans are the "Chattahooligians"...they have their own chants and banners...it is pretty exciting. Their team plays in a league with teams from Atlanta, Nashville, Ashville, Greenville, New Orleans....you get the idea. The Atlanta team is the Silverbacks. Now we are getting some level of pro team. It will be interesting to see how that goes. We have the North American VW plant in town. They have done much to promote and support the club team.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Being in Atlanta, I'm not certain where all these soccer fans came from, lol.
The team has done a great job marketing themselves in the Atlanta area.

Braves might have some home games. Their new stadium is pretty cool too. (Google "The Battery")
I will try to take some pics of the game/stadium while I'm there.
And report back.

The team has done a great job marketing themselves in the Atlanta area. Only soccer stadium where you can hear Petey Pablo and Pastor Troy. Going to Hawks and United Games just feels like the tailgate never stopped. They're a party for sure. The Crew's stadium sucks and it's a pain to get there. And I live 15 minutes away and have gone to a fair amount of games. The location just really sucks. I hope Wahlberg buys the Crew and keeps them away from ATX. People in Austin don't even care about an MLS team.

So, I am back from the game! We won! I had such an awesome time! It is a completely different experience watching soccer on TV and being there in person. The crowd was insanity. They were SO loud, and So passionate. Just constant cheering and booing (when they disagree with something) the whole entire time. Everyone coming out of their seat constantly the whole game. And when we scored....OMG I never heard anything so loud. And everybody was high fiving strangers. It was just nuts. Like a giant party. It was nothing like going to a football game or basketball game. There are no breaks or timeouts. There is only halftime. And everything happens quick. And there was no announcer. That was very weird. The only time you heard the announcer was if there was a substitution or a goal. There was no music or other thing prompting the crowd. The only time there was music is when we scored. The crowd was amped up all on their own. It was so much fun. I have to go back. The stadium was really cool too. Not a bad seat, watching football there would be really fun. So, some (bad) pictures. Our seats. This picture makes us look farther away than we were. Our view of the field and players was excellent. The Jumbotron is a circular screen in the ceiling. I couldn't get a good picture of this, but in the "endzone", there are these crazy flag people waving giant ass flags and dancing the whole game. Oh and if you get bored, there are casinos in the stadium. lol The stadium was pretty impressive too. Better than the Georgia Dome, they did a good job. One more note: Everybody was wearing these AU scarves. I never heard of this before. I don't know if it's a soccer thing, or an AU thing. But I want one. They look like Harry Potter scarves. lol It was like being around 50,000 Harry Potter wizards. https://www.fanatics.com/mls/atlanta-uni...+z-9-3349024174So, anyways, that was my fun time today. Definitely going back.

You're welcome out to PDX any time for a game, just let me know and I'll either give you my second ticket or arrange for others. We have 15k on the waiting list, but it is still easy to get tickets for single games. I hope your fans and atmosphere doesn't change after the team isn't "new" anymore. As much as I don't like the Sounders or Seattle fans (and this as a former Seahawks season ticket holder, way too many Seattle fans are words I'm not allowed to type here), I appreciate what they do week in and week out regardless of how the team performs (which is generally good). I suspect they'd say the same thing about Timbers fans.

Went to Atlanta United game yesterday. Roof open. A couple notes. There were 71,000 people at the game. It set several attendance records. Going to an AU game is the trendy thing to do here. And a good time. At halftime we wanted food. Found a food cart serving fancy pork cheek tacos. They tasted amazing. Turns out the stadium had fans vote on local restaurants to have food carts at the stadium (in addition to normal stadium fare) So those yummy tacos came from a local foodie spanish tapas restaurant. https://www.theiberianpigatl.com/#contemporary-spanish-tapasAnyways I thought that was pretty cool. Not used to having upscale food at a stadium.

That article is from September last year. I would be interested to see where they rank Columbus after this almost-losing-the-team fiasco. I would have guessed Crew fans were top 2 of 3 the way people were so fired up.

That looks amazing. I hope the Haslams take notice. It sounds like the city will be building an arena for them downtown. It's a very good thing for the team.

Also, those pork cheek tacos look outstanding! You're correct, teams have to have an outstanding fan experience to get people to go to the games.

Yeah I'd guess most of AU's popularity is because the stadium is very fan focused.
When the stadium was first built, and they announced it would split time between Falcons and MLS... I was like pfffft who cares about soccer.
Boy was I wrong.
There was a strong built in fanbase because of large latino/hispanic population here. They are very passionate about soccer.
And then the new stadium was designed with fan experience in mind and I havent even explored it all yet. Its a one of a kind amazing stadium
Suddenly it all went viral and AU games got popular.
So now I just feel happy, and hope other cities(coughCLEcough) could get on the bandwagon.

I was talking about Columbus and the Crew specifically. Although I'm sure Cleveland will get one within the decade. I think the MLS really wants to expand to two or three leagues. Relegation and promotion seem like coolest thing in soccer some years.

Cle/Col gonna need to get a dome of some kind.
I am not much familiar with how MLS championships are run, but seems it happens in Dec, and snow/weather isnt really acceptable for a game.

Cle/Col gonna need to get a dome of some kind. Definitely. I believe it was last year that Dee Haslam went on record as having discussions with the city of CLE regarding a new stadium/future developments. Granted it will likely still be 10 years down the road. However, I certainly agree that CLE needs a domed stadium. It'd be cool to see Columbus get one as well. The Columbus Blue Jackets do a hell of a job creating a great fan experience.

I always hated domes.
I always felt football should be played in the elements.
To some degree I still feel that way.
Especially about Browns football.
But now that have experienced the new fancy stadium with retractible roof...
I'm on the wagon of new stadium like Atl's.
It makes so many more sports/activities possible, that werent before.
I really feel like ATL stadium should be a blueprint to follow. because what they did is amazing

Oh Dear God. I just got thrust into the middle of a lovers quarrel at the bar, unknowningly.
There were these weirdos at the end of the bar. I wasn't paying them any attention. I was just watching my game. And then the guy keeps coming up to me and offers to buy me a shot. I didn't realize they were together.
And normally when men want to buy me a shot, I am fine with it because Yay Shots and it makes men feel manly.
But then he introduced me to her and she was hugging on me. And I was like Ok, this is starting to get weird.
Then they got into a screaming match fight and someone had to hold him back and he ripped her wig off.
Me: UMMMMMMMM. Looks away. Check please.
And he comes back up to me. And I'm like, sorry that happened to you. I need to go.
And I ran out of there fast as could.

Now to find a date/friend to join me. Portland is heading to the MLS Cup too!! If I didn't already plans to be in California, I'd be heading to Atlanta next week to watch the match. I know that nobody is giving Portland much of a chance to win, but we weren't supposed to beat Dallas in Dallas, Seattle in Seattle, or KC in KC either. I just hope it will be a great game. Good luck to your boys (kind of).

Just got the tix for the game. Going with my gf.
I will try to take some pics and make a post about it.
It's been on the news, radio, and people at bar making random cheers for them today. (even though no AU game was on).
City is pumped.
Excited! Fingers crossed for a win!

I'm not happy with the AU decision makers. Traditionally 5% of tickets are earmarked for the opponent for MLS Cup. Atlanta offered 1300 tickets (which sold out in 4 minutes). Meanwhile, the cheapest ticket I saw the other day was $272.
Have fun at the game - I won't be online this weekend, but will look forward to the pictures when I get on.

I don't think there would ever be cheap seats for this game. Maybe if hosted in some other city where MLS isn't as popular. Atlanta loves their AU.
Earlier in the season they were only filling up the lower and middle bowls of the stadium (they weren't even selling tickets to the upper bowl), then the later regular season game I went to, the entire stadium was full, including the nosebleeds.
Compare that to other venues....I think I was watching an AU game against Denver(??) at Denver, and the venue was tiny and only half full.

Not a surprise...Colorado sucked and so did their attendance. Watching the first round of the playoffs, Dallas and NY were mostly empty too. For the playoffs. That's just sad. We've had 8 years of every game sold out regardless of how good we were...almost 13k on the waiting list too. I look forward to the new part of the stadium being done next season...and I live next to it so I get to see the progress every day Related but unrelated, I saw a post from the Timbers Army - they've set up a volunteer thing Saturday morning planting trees with Trees Atlanta ( https://treesatlanta.org/). I love to see that
