WOOF WOOF ...

Duke is still recovering. He'll be in overnight. He gets to come home in the AM though. He's going to be keaky for a few days though, so I had to go buy puppy pads to protect the house.

Good luck with your pup. I love dogs and tear up just thinking about my mom & dad's last German Shepherd (Gunner # 1). What a fantastic dog he was. I walked him every day.

I hope he's my official greeter in heaven.

Put the pads down and keep him in the kitchen.....dogs love kitchens. If you can't close it off, a bathroom will work.

He will be happy to be home with you.

He'd be miserable in the kitchen.

I'll be covering the house in plastic and puppy pads.

I still think he is glad to be home.

He will be in the morning. He's still in the hospital overnight.

Talk to your vet about some kind of collar to prevent Duke from bothering his stitches.



One of our guys had ACL surgery and we returned home after a dinner out to find that he had ripped out all his stitches. It wasn't a pretty sight. The bill from the emergency clinic to re-suture his wound wasn't a pretty sight either. Thank goodness he survived, but it was pretty traumatic at the time.

Oh yeah, he gets the "E-Collar", which sounds like a torture devise, but it actually stands for "Elizabethan Collar"

Man the house is so, so, so very quiet tonight. I keep waiting for the dog to come tell me he wants to go out, or eat, or be petted ...... and then I remember that he's still in the hospital. I have wondered where he is at least a dozen times ..... even though I know where he is. I need my little buddy back home where he belongs!

Something I read today really hit home for me.

While you, or me, may have a lot of friends, our pets have exactly 1 best friend: You. Or me.

They rely on us more so than we rely on any individual. They trust us.

Duke is home, but he's sore and worn down. He's also still leaky ... which is a pain ... But he's adjusting. He hates, hates, hates that cone. He's been good though, so he has only worn it when I take a nap, or sleep.

Wishing you both a speedy recovery and a solid bit of buddy time over the holidays. Tough on us when pets are struggling. I am sure he would rather be home even if uncomfortable.

Anyone who prays, please pray for Duke. He's not eating, and hasn't since Saturday might. He's throwing up every time I try to give him his medication, or even just Pepto.

He goes in tomorrow for another X-Ray, to make sure there's no blockage anywhere. I am really worried.

Just got Duke back from the vet, and checked Duke over, and his body is in good condition ... heart, lungs, and so forth, and he has regained most of his pre-surgery strength. (despite not eating) I am supposed to give him broth, or other liquids beside water to try to get him going again. The doctor gave him fluids and a shot to get his appetite going again. Hopefully this works.

As a funny aside, Duke farted while we were at the doctor's office, and the Vet was really happy about that, because it minimizes the chances that he has an intestinal blockage.

And here I thought only GM celebrated farting...

He took some milk when we got home, so I am hoping to also get him to take some broth, and then some solid food, and get his system going again.

You might want to put some broth on the solid food when you first try switching over from all liquids to solids. We had to do that w/Simba when he had his issues.

About 15 years ago our Golden Retriever, Molly, had pancreatitis. She stopped eating and drinking water, and was vomiting yellowish bile. She was very sick, but with treatment from the vet - I can't remember the meds - and a very bland diet, we got her back to normal. Our go-to food was boiled boneless, skinless chicken breasts with white rice (real rice, not minute rice). We made a big mess of it, forked the chicken breasts into "pulled chicken" and remixed it with the cooked rice. We kept it in the fridge and nuked a smallish portion for her twice a day. She went from being totally disinterested in food to be very interested very quickly because, as I'm sure you know, dogs LOVE chicken.

I bought 6# of boneless chicken breast, and bagged it up and put it in the freezer. He stopped eating that too.

However .... he used to eat a lot of ham, and he loved it. I gave him a small dish of milk, which he took ..... then I decided to give him some thin sliced ham. He ate 6 slices. He seems to be OK. I am going to wait till 8 or 9, or so, and then try to give him a real meal .... mixed with some broth. I am just thrilled that he ate something. He's a big, fat dog ...... but living off of his fat for 4 or 5 days is really pushing it.

Man, you guys have no idea how happy I was when he actually ate some solid food!

The other thing about chicken is that humans LOVE chicken too. Glad to hear Duke ate some solid food. Surgery is a shock to the system, and I would guess he's in some pain, so it might take a few days for him to feel like himself again.

I got so worried when he went 4 days largely without food.

I was just talking to my mom about it, and it was Saturday night that he had last eaten. He ate a very little on Tuesday night .... 2 small pieces of hamburger bun. The vet gave him fluids and a shot to stimulate his appetite, and it appears to have worked. My mom has stayed over because Duke can't climb steps yet, so she can stay downstairs with him. (from his surgery through tonight) He begged for her macaroni and cheese plate, which he hadn't done since he came home, as well as for almost half my hamburger. lol . Tomorrow will be a full week after he came home, so I am hopeful that he will be a happy Christmas dog.

He ate again today, so that's great ... and he's drinking like GM. (only it's water with Duke) He's still a bit leaky from the surgery, and I have "pee pads" all over the house, but that's a small price to pay for him to get better. Doc said he'd leak a bit for a week or 2, because the stones rubbed the inside of his bladder so raw. A lot of the swelling has already gone down, and the incision area is healing up really well.
