It's going to be maybe the most crucial Browns decision in a long time.
I'm glad I'm not responsible for it...

This may be the oddest response there will ever be to a coach hire. I let Bake decide.
For many reasons this makes perfect sense. Bake will be all in with the coach and the coach will be all in with Bake, thats actually the formula we are seeing play out.
That said the way this team has responded to Williams and Kitchen says it all.
IMO this isn't difficult but rather obvious.

I like what I see from Williams. Like I said in the other thread.. that guy can coach. He might actually be one of the rare guys who is better suited for a head coaching role than a coordinator, as he is a great leader and motivator.
Going into the second half of the season, I didn't really think of Williams as a serious option going forward, but how can you not like what you see?
It's a big decision. Maybe in time it will become more clear but I still don't really know which way the Browns should go. I trust Dorsey to make the right call.

J/C - I said when Williams was promoted, splitting the difference would be impressive. He and Kitchens and the other members of the staff have way surpassed my expectations. Not just the wins - the change in culture, how the staff and team believes, is together - has been beyond amazing. I haven’t seen a galvanised unit like this here since the return. Isn’t that what we have all clamoured for?
Like someone else said - glad I’m not making the decision. GW et al have made the decision a really difficult and pivotal one. What if they aren’t retained and we start slow next year? What if they are retained and the same? We need patience whichever way we go but make no mistake - I expect us to compete for the division next year. Anything else would be disappointing regardless of whoever is in charge.

Look the way I see it the team is hustling all over the field, playing well and they actually look like they are enjoying doing it to boot. The effort and results are palpable. Let's not make any changes with the coaching staff and keep it together. If it doesn't work out we will have make to a change later but right now it's fine. Why change it up? It's not broke so don't fix it.

It's not broke so don't fix it. That makes sense. We are 4-2 under Williams and Kitchen. We have a draft and free agency before next season. I see more fight and unselfishness in this team than any other in a very long time. There is a lot to be said for chemistry and strong leadership and this team has it.

IMO this isn't difficult but rather obvious. Actually, I think what you said is exactly what will happen. Thats why it's 95% Riley, 5% the field. I'm changing that though to 95% Riley, 5% Williams. At this point does anyone think that Baker is going to start all over with a new HC and coaching staff led by Toub or Harbaugh or any other name out there. You might as well keep Williams at that point. The only thing I'm in favor of is Dorsey getting it right and I have no idea what right is. But I do know I absolutely love the team as it is right now with this staff.

Clearly Dorsey will have to consider the current staff as is.
But in the end it is all about Dorsey being in sync with his head coach. And, If the head coach is the right guy for the further development of Baker Mayfield.
More than any other factors that has to be considered first.
Dorsey knows the NFL. He is the prime of his career. He is very well connected inside the NFL. And he is well aware that this decision will define him.
So I am all good with who Dorsey chooses.

The team may literally force King Johns hand ... This is exactly where I sit. How do you break it up? Our D is just now coming together. Add a couple pieces and we are there. Same with the O. Get another win or two and GW may have locked it in. Even if Dorsey wants to go another direction, how does your hero Jimmy not step in and say, "Aw hell no. This is what I've been looking for since I bought the team." I think I'd even keep Blake as the DC.

I've read several posters say that Dorsey will want to hire "his guy". Why is it that Williams can't be that guy? Just because he's already here doesn't mean he won't be the one that Dorsey chooses. I'm hoping Dorsey won't try to outsmart himself if Williams, in fact, ends up being the best candidate.
As to others mentioning a small sample size of Williams games. It may be small, but other than former head coaches, it's still larger than the sample size of some assistant who has never been a head coach. Williams is able to show/not show things that coaching interviews just don't show because he's able to do it on the field.

To take it a step further, perhaps, look at where we are the day after another guts-and-grit win, this one in Mile High. We won. Again. Another monkey off our backs.
What more do you want from your coaches? Are they meeting expectations? Surpassing your hopes? For my money, we have completely exceeded the realistically low bar I had with Baker on the bench. These coaches are getting more out of more players than I expected. We need a coach in charge tackling quality assurance. But really, this team is getting to be a nastier out and cleaning up some of their junky shortfalls. And winning. What are the coaching deficiencies we would address? I truly believe that this staff would get much out of Dorsey's draft and FA (which I am eager to see!), and put them together with this roster.
Another way, what has this group failed to do that they needed to achieve to stay put? Again, this season has surpassed what I thought we could manage to achieve in spades. This is Chemistry 101 in Berea. I think we get tougher as we are; blow it up for another crapshoot? I see more strength to anchor ourselves to here since 1999 and The Return. Time for replacing next year if needed.

At this point win out or lose some games, keep the coaching staff in place. The coaching search has been discontinued.

If we get rid of Williams, what does that say to the team? This is supposed to be a performance based league. Williams comes in and performs well beyond expectations. Then you fire him? What does that do to a locker room?

This has got to the point where the decision is as easy as it was when Garrett was the first overall pick. Only the idiots getting over complicated could possible talk themselves out of keeping GW as HC and Kitchens as OC.
Keep it simple.

Keep it simple. I agree completely. I won’t rehash what I’ve previously said - the solution is looking us in the face. A good free agency and decent draft - man, we’re cooking with a team that’s young and has its QB. It’s sometimes difficult to accept when you get good things. You look for the negative, the bad outcome. I’d like to think that karma is in effect.

Is Gregg Williams the best possible coach? No one knows. Is what we are seeing the most cohesive, unified, best looking team in like a decade or more? We’ve had lower ceilings than a snails apartment but man, we look like we can beat most teams. Few more pieces? Who knows? That’s my 2p.

Is Gregg Williams the best possible coach? It would depend on who is the competition and their experience. Having seen what we are seeing this season with how Williams handled the interim gig and the clear results working with the staff currently available (mind you these are guys he did not choose), how can you convince the Haslams to look elsewhere. If GW ralleys the team to win out, Dorsey has a harder time to convince anyone his decision if he chooses anyone not Gregg Williams.

Under GW's leadership, this team has come together and if you follow any of the players on social media you can see it. He is letting the players be themselves and coaching to team strengths. Keeping kitchens and GW is a must.
Meh.

Is Gregg Williams the best possible coach? Williams has been the beneficiary of following a monumentally bad head coach - the opposite of "a tough act to follow". I think he's done a good job and I think the team likes him, and plays hard for him. But if reports are true about Lincoln Riley being this offensive genius - like the next Bill Walsh - I think we have to try to get him. Ideally, some continuity would be a good thing, so maybe Riley would be agreeable to Williams and Kitchens staying - but that has to be his call, not a prerequisite for getting the job.

If GW goes 5-3 or 6-2? Those are hard to ignore numbers. Especially when you consider our seasons in the abyss.
I don’t know who would be “best”. Honest opinion. I want post season football, on the regular. I love what I’ve seen since The change over. I’m not the GM. I wish him luck.

Going from the worst head coach ever to an averageish head coach is a huge upgrade.
I think Gregg Williams has forced himself into the conversation, but to close all the other doors would be silly.

If memory serves me, wasn't Chip Kelly thought of in the same as this offensive genious and next great innovator? What happened with him? I admit that like Kelly at the time, Riley is an amazing college coach; but I'd be nervous with going with an unknown at the professional level.

I agree it would be very difficult to not hire Williams after the turnaround he has lead, but if Dorsey believes Riley is this generational type coach, he has to try to get him. Mind you, I have no idea what Dorsey thinks of Riley, or any other candidate. I only hope that if they are tempted to hire Mike McCarthy that they just keep Williams instead.

I don’t think that would be an issue with Riley. I also think there is very little chance Riley leaves Oklahoma.

Its still mind boggling to me how anyone thinks someone with ZERO NFL EXPERIENCE at any level combined with the fact he’s going to be finishing up his 2nd year as a HC at any level is ready to be an NFL HC ..
This would be dumber than hiring Sashi was and thats the worst hire in the history of sports ...
How does that add up ...

I think GW has answered the bell, and I believe we should announce that we've taken the interim tag off and have decided to not upset the apple cart.
If things go south in 2019, Dorsey can consider cleaning out the coaching staff and few will bat an eye. If we bring in a whole new staff and they suck, Uncle John will have to Answer some questions.
This team has responded to GW. It's pretty obvious what we should do.

Hiring a new coach would be flat idiocy.
New coach means a new staff. A new staff means new offensive and defensive systems.
New systems means having to rebuild the roster for players who fit said systems.
So, another two years of wasted picks and free agents.
We gave the previous head coach two+ seasons with nothing to show for it.
We want to dump GW, who is winning, with a complete unknown and hope for the best?
Flat out idiocy.
