I knocked Chubb's pass blocking before the draft and he's got much better as the season progressed.

I think Barkley is being a bit disrespected here. He is excellent. A lot of people in the know are ranking him very high. Some even say that he is already the best RB in the NFL.

The Giants OL is horrid. It's probably the second worst in the NFL, only ahead of the Cardinals'. Also, the passing game w/Eli is dreadful and teams are doing everything they can to take Barkley away.

I agree. I thought he was better than Zeke coming out. Still do.

Barkley will be one of the top picks next year in FFL. I underestimated him, but I still think the Giants screwed up and should have taken Darnold or Rosen. It could be a long few years for the Giants unless they get lucky on quarterback.

Please don't take this as an insult but you must not have been paying much attention to UGA football.

I'm saying all of this to say that, Nich Chubb is the #2 all time rushing leader from Georgia. And Todd Gurley ain't number one. Chubb, who split carries with Sony Michel and who suffered a horrific knee injury that cost him a season is only second to Herschel Walker.

Barkley is a fine back. He is tremendously talented and you could make the argument that he is a more complete back than Nick since he was highly skilled as a runner and pass catcher when he showed up in the NFL. I haven't watched one full Giants game this year so I'll go out on a limb and say pass protection is a push.

I think they each get it done a little differently. Nick is a down-hill, no-nonsense power back with surprising elusiveness and cutting ability. Barkley looks like a 230 lbs version of Gayle Sayers.

Still, I have no buyer's remorse.

Yep, RB was very deep this year and it was the main reason I wanted to pass on Barkley for a QB. Turns out we played it right and got Chubb.

There are a ton of very good rookie RBs. It's a shame that some got hurt, but there are so many that have looked outstanding. Barkley, Penny Chubb, Michelle, K. Johnson, Lindsay, Guice [got hurt in preseason after a long run,] Freeman, Hines, Ballage, Freeman, J. Adams, I. Smith. Man, that's a lot of dudes.

Additionally, I think the entire rookie class is shaping up as a very good one. Lot's of good players.

Bark’s #’s ... someone asked about his recieving #’s ... heres the # of receptions and some other tidbits ...

while Barkley’s 87 grabs rank second at his position behind Christian McCaffrey’s 106. Barkley is 108 yards shy of Ezekiel Elliott for third-most total yards all time by a rookie running back and 253 behind Edgerrin James for second. Barkley needs 14 receptions to tie Anquan Boldin for most ever by a rookie, regardless of position. If both Todd Gurley and Ezekiel Elliott sit, Barkley could win the NFL rushing title with 237 yards. Popping as Week 17’s No. 4 buy-low running back in Josh Hermsmeyer’s Air Yards model, Barkley is this week’s premier RB1 play.

I love the way Chubb runs, the yards after contact, the break away speed. The vision. He is also an outstanding receiver but we don't throw to him like the Giants throw to Barklay.
Chubb reminds me of Mike Pruitt. Big tough back with speed and quickness.

I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

I don't care about position or record when I say that is damn impressive.

I think for Baker to have a chance to win OROY, he needs to break the rookie TD record and he needs to beat the Ravens. If he does those two things I think you would have to call OROY as 50/50 between him and Barkley.

I so so wanted Baker Mayfield and Barkley at #1 and 4. I thought those two would be an unstoppable force of play run we pass, play pass we run. With our OL...man o man I still drool a little bit.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the Forum. Chubb is pretty amazing in his own rite and you can see the improvement from week to week. So much better than my impressions of him.

Making Baker, Ward and Chubb into a great Trio for the TEAM. So so good. Chubb who was HORRID in his pass pro experience has really gotten much better as the season has worn on. Which tells me he is working on it more and more. We don't want a situation where Duke is in and 90% chance we will pass and Chubb is in a 90% chance we will run. So more and more we see Chubb remain as the lone back and Duke going into a WR position.

There are occasions that we have no RB and Duke out wide Chubb out and we motion Duke back in for a handoff or on some occasions I see Chubb in and Duke wide and he is the jet sweep.

Also we now see under the imagination of Kitchens, Duke,Chubb and Hilliard all in the backfield in many different formations. I just love what Kitchens has done with our Offense...just love it and Chubb is a big part of it!
wink

I have to wonder how much the "difficulty factor" plays into offensive rookie of the year? Let's face it, most of us know that RB is more of a plug and play position. A RB, as with most positions in the NFL, only has to worry about his own assignment. His block, his route or the hole he has to hit.

The QB has to learn what the routes of all of his WR's are, learn the entire offense, read the defense, adjust to the speed of the game and lead the entire offense. The difficulty factor of being an NFL QB far outweighs that of the RB position.

Now I have no idea how much they factor that into the decision but I think it should go a very long way in the outcome.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Current betting odds have both Baker and Barkley running even for OROY. Both at -120.

I took Baker.

Bakes, for the award. What's not to love. He has done so much, and all those ROW awards, and has helped so many players be better around him IN SPITE OF two of his most direct coaches being canned AND then starting. The overachievement is astounding.

Bakes by a handful of votes.

Joel Bitinio said he was "crushed" for Nick Chubb that he reached 1,000 yards during the finale but lost it with negative runs in the fourth quarter. Chubb finished with 996 yards. "We just told him we'd get him 2,000 next season," Bitinio said.... http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-41051430-4

I really thought with 1st and 10 at the Baltimore 38 that we would put Chubb in and run at least once and maybe twice, gaining enough yards to kick the game winner while running the clock down on the rats ...

I felt real bad for him...if I had to blame anyone it would be our game plan against their runs as it took a lot of time off the clock and we didn't stop them. But it sort of forced us to pass more. We were getting 3-4 yards a pop it wasn't like stopped stone cold.

Baker has to be the Rookie of the year. He just broke the rookie TD mark and he didn't have like Record INTs in there nor a full season. And he broke it against the best Defense in the league, before the game we were told he had little chance of doing that...there he was doing it!

jmho - he doesn't need chip material. Us not getting in the playoffs is Chip on the shoulder enough for him...trust me on that! He more for the team chip then himself although that works too...lol laugh

I can't wait for Moneyball 2, the movie, when they have the scene where Paul Depodesta (played again by Jonah Hill) and John Dorsey (played by Ed Harris) are begging Hue Jackson (played by Tyler Perry) to bench Carlos Hyde and play Nick Chubb at running back. And Jackson, in his best stubborn Art Howe impression, says "No, I'm the coach, and Hyde is my running back." And Dorsey responds back with, "Well you can do what you like, but you can't play Hyde, because he plays for Jacksonville now ..."

Baker Mayfield: Beware of ‘phenomenally talented’ Nick Chubb

https://www.cantonrep.com/sports/20190518/baker-mayfield-beware-of-phenomenally-talented-nick-chubb

Those who doubt the Browns’ No. 1 back can become a star on the order of a certain former Steeler might take note that Nick Chubb’s rookie year was better than Le’Veon Bell’s.

BEREA The running back who might make the Browns’ offense is a barreling truck kind of blunt.

Kind of like his name. Nick Chubb.

Chubb, who reached 1,000 yards in the season finale at Baltimore, then retreated from four figures when he lost yards on the last carry of his rookie year, might be Cleveland’s Le’Veon Bell.

That is, when Bell was a rookie No. 48 overall draft pick in 2013, he gave the Steelers a modest 860 rushing yards at 3.5 per carry. Bell then made a big jump in his second year, to 1,361 yards at 4.7 a pop, in addition to emerging as a sensational receiver.

Chubb was a rookie No. 35 overall pick in 2018, when he gave the Browns 996 rushing yards at 5.2 per carry and caught more passes than he had in his final three years at Georgia combined.

Partly because his personal delivery is (to use Baker Mayfield’s description) “very quiet,” there seems a hesitation about imagining Chubb as an overall entity of the Le’Veon Bell order.

Yet, to invoke another Mayfield opinion, expressed after a practice Wednesday, Chubb is “phenomenally talented.”

In terms of “team fit,” Bell’s contract disputes and eventual escape to New York arguably cracked the very foundations in Pittsburgh. Young Chubb, on the other hand, is emerging as a star student in Cleveland’s chemistry class.

“He just works really hard,” Mayfield said. “He cares about winning more than anything. He had 1,000 yards and lost it. He didn’t care about that. He cared about the fact that we lost the last game of the year.

“That speaks volumes about who he is as a teammate.”

Former running backs coach Freddie Kitchens keeps pounding a message as to improving from 0-16 to 7-8-1.

“We didn’t accomplish ANYTHING.”

Thus, while the new head coach pronounces Chubb “ready to roll,” his face gets red and impatient if you start putting stock in what the Browns “accomplished” in going 5-5 after Chubb became the primary ball carrier.

In the wins during that 5-5 run, for what it’s worth, Chubb ran 100 times for 538 yards (three touchdowns) and caught 12 passes (two for TDs). In the losses, Chubb ran 76 times for 285 yards and caught eight passes.

As the Browns’ orbit circles through spring practice and toward the 2019 season, getting Chubb ready to stick the landing for the first half of the season is a major focus. The 2018 Browns accomplished “NOTHING” because they were 2-5-1 through eight games. And, Chubb’s projected sidekick, Kareem Hunt, isn’t eligible to play until Game 9.

Odell Beckham has been added to an emerging pass game, but as Mayfield puts it:

“We still need to be able to run it in our division. Mentality wise, it is a tough division. We have people talking about our receivers and tight ends, but we have to be able to run the ball in short yardage and in cold weather. I’m hoping everybody not talking about the running backs kind of (ticks) them off.”

If Chubb ever gets steamed about anything, he is good at not letting it show.

Asked this week to judge his rookie year, Chubb said, “I don’t really have a grade for it. I gave it my all in the games. I feel pretty good about myself.”

As a senior at Georgia, Chubb shared the running back workload with Sony Michel.

At times, he proved he could deliver in huge games against name teams, as in a 14-carry, 145-yard game against Mayfield’s Oklahoma Sooners. There were some easy marks, such as Samford (16 carries, 131 yards) and Vanderbilt (16 carries, 138 yards), but there also were days of pain, as in outings against Auburn (11-27) and Alabama (18-25).

“Everyone on the field in the NFL is very good,” Chubb said. “There are no plays off, no days off, no games off. Not everyone you played in college was AS tough.

“Every game last year was new. I was going to continue to try to get it as I went on. I never fully got it. i still don’t have it. I’m still learning.”

Chubb is unsure whether Duke Johnson, who has not attended voluntary spring workouts, will stay on the roster.

Chubb said he has talked with Johnson.

“We wish he was here with the team,” Chubb said, “but he’s on his own business right now.”

Meanwhile, Hunt is allowed to practice, and is doing so. Word is Chubb and Hunt are becoming very good friends.

“He’s cool,” Chubb said. “He’s a great guy. I’m enjoying having him as a teammate. Just as a person, he laughs and keeps you up. He’s always a high-spirited guy.

“It’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be fun to play, fun to watch ... not only me and Kareem, but other guys. If Duke makes it back, he can run the ball very well, as well as catching it.

“We’re all ready to run the ball here.”

Hunt was emerging as a star in his second year with the Chiefs before off-field violence got him kicked off the team. Even though Chubb has spent less time in the NFL than Hunt, he might serve as something of a mentor.

Chubb spent four years in the SEC. Hunt played four years in the MAC (Toledo).

“Kareem can learn from Nick,” Kitchens said. “It doesn’t have to be the other way around. Any time you put two guys that are competitors like they are, it benefits the whole team.”

Chubb has had plenty of voices in his ear since spring practice, 2018. Todd Haley and Hue Jackson were key coaching influences at this time last year. Kitchens was Chubb’s position coach at first, then his coordinator, and now is his head coach.

Mayfield has been a constant. Both Mayfield (behind Tyrod Taylor) and Chubb (behind Carlos Hyde) were backups last May. Then they emerged as rookie starters. Now they are among the most conspicuous surfers atop a wave of optimism.

“Baker knows whatever is happening, at whatever point,” Chubb said a few minutes after a practice. “He’s VERY helpful.”

Mayfield seems to think Chubb can be, too.
