Then at 17, best run stuffing DT or Devon White. Run stuffing players should never go in the first round if that is their only skill. Danny Shelton played 31% of the snaps for the Patriots this year. That type of player does nothing for you when a team passes most of the time and also lines up in shotgun most of the time. If we want a run stuffer we should bring back Jamie Meder. He is currently available because no one signed him after we cut him. One sure would have helped yesterday

I agree, but the assumption is if you're drafting a run stuffer in the first, he has additional talents, or he wouldn't be a first round talent. I didn't think I needed to state the obvious.

Devon White, or if he is off the table, BPA.
Largely, it is going to get shuffled dramatically by what we're able to do in Free Agency.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

We're going to sign Shaq Barrett and maybe draft another guy in the middle rounds. I'm hoping we can get one of the Wisconsin guys myself.

Wonder what it would take to go from 17 to the top 5? I really like Quinnen Williams in the first. I think he could be a game changer on defense.

This is a very strong DT draft, I don't see Dorsey being careless with draft capital for Williams. I stay at 17, where we have a reasonable shot at Dexter Lawrence, Raekwon Davis, Jeffery Simmons or Derrick Brown, Christian Wilkins or Jerry Tillery.

So you are saying the Defensive coaches did not know what they were doing yesterday? Let's see they gave up 20 points in the first half. Could have easily gave up 27 but didn't. Then made adjustments in the 2nd half and only gave up 2 field goals. I think those adjustments mean they know what to do.

Our coaches have made great halftime adjustments all season. It was one of the best things we improved on. It helped put our team in positions to win every game.
It was one of the things that frustrated me all previous seasons was that we never seemed to make halftime adjustments.
Random comment, sorry. Maybe we need a "What I Saw" thread for the whole season.

I really think with us having Baker Mayfield, we can really just go best guy available, aside from the obvious positions that we are strong at.
Would love OL depth. Would love to somehow add a really good player to the front seven. I don't think there's ever anything wrong with drafting a good defensive back. Lack of depth at CB will murder your team.
Depending on what happens with Tyrod Taylor, we may be drafting a quarterback in the late rounds. There's always picking up a veteran on the free agent market, but next year's likely available group is not a very good one.
17 isn't the top 5 where we've seemed to be every year, but I think this is going to be a pretty good class, so we'll still get someone at 17. Walter has us getting Davis from Alabama.
Also cool, this is the first day I have looked at a mock which is unusual. Normally I am looking at them in October.

I think this is the list .... sure we would always welcome upgrades and or competition at every position but DT LB and CB in that order are the areas that would push this team forward significantly. When your offense with a rookier QB can put up 20+ points and 300+ yards on one of the NFL's elite defenses you know the offense is in pretty decent shape. Another WR would be nice. An improvement at OT would be nice .... but really when you give up so few sacks as we have in the last few games, it is not a priority. Go D first 3 or 4 picks.... I agree that our focus should be on D but I wouldn't get carried away. We played without Ward, Gaines, Kirksey on IR.. we have a few decent players who will be back. Need to look at the complete roster when healthy, see who we get in FA, then see who is available. Supposed to be a very deep draft at DT, hopefully that helps and teams fill other needs first and a top 2 or 3 DT falls to us at 17. Unfortunately its going to be a pretty weak draft at QB so not a lot of teams rushing up to get one to push other positions down.

Unfortunately its going to be a pretty weak draft at QB so not a lot of teams rushing up to get one to push other positions down. Really, we should just take the best player that falls to us. We're finally in a position where we're not desperate to fill a gaping hole somewhere. DT, LB and CB are probably our biggest needs, but #17 is a position where one of the big "Top 10" guys usually drops. If someone falls, we should snatch them up ... provided it's not a position like QB or OG, where we're already completely set. The last 4 drafts: 2018 - Pick 17, Derwin James, S Pick 18, Jaire Alexander, CB Pick 19, Leighton Vander Esch, LB 2017 - Pick 15, Malik Hooker, S Pick 17, Jonathan Allen, DT Pick 19, O. J. Howard, TE 2016 - Pick 13, Laremy Tunsil, OT Pick 17, Keanu Neal, S 2015 - Pick 18, Marcus Peters CB Looks like there are plenty of good players that will fall to us in the late teens. We shouldn't just focus on one position. If a guy like Derwin James falls to us at 17, like what happened to the Chargers last year, we should grab him, and not worry about the position.

Here are the guys that I think could go top 10-15 in the draft
QB With Herbert returning to Oregon the only guy possible is Haskins OSU if he declares
Rb None
Wr Personally I don't see any but in the mock drafts the following have gone in that range N'Keal Herry ASU DK Metcalf Ole Miss Kelvin Harmon NCST AJ Brown Ole Miss Depending what he runs at the 40, Hakeem Butler could get taken in this range
TE None
Oline Greg Little Ole Miss Jonah WIlliams Alabama David Edwards Wisc - very small possibility
S Deionte Thompson Alabama
CB Greedy Williams LSU Deandre Baker Georgia Byron Murphy Wash
ILb Devin White LSU - Rumor is that he will return to LSU for next year
OLB/Edge/DE Nick Bosa Josh Allen Kentucky Jachai Polite Florida Montez Sweat Miss St Clelin Ferrell Clemson
DT Ed Oliver Houston Quinnen Williams Alabama Rashan Gary Michigan Raekwon Davis Alabama Dexter Lawrence Clemson - How much will he fall related to the drug testing Jeffrey Simmons Miss ST - Had some off-field issue in the past Derrick Brown Auburn Christian Wilkins Clemson
Anybody I miss? Any issues with those I listed? I count 21 that I think should go top 15 - I did not include any of the Wr's or Edwards

can you imagine if Haskins doesn't declare?
I'm not sure one QB in this draft is worth a first round pick.
when was the last time that happened?
side note... we got really lucky with Mayfield.
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

The NFL has heavily become about two things when it comes to sustainable success:
1. Increase the pass efficiency of your offense 2. Decrease the pass efficiency of your opponent's offense.
So, in a vacuum, I hope there is much consideration to one of these points with our first pick. A cornerback, pass rusher, OT, WR, are a few positions I hope we look at and prioritize moreso than, say, a run-stopping DT. I think you can find valuable players at this position, and others (LB being another) later in the draft, much like the RB position.
Whoever is speculated to fall into our pick range and falls into those positions, is someone I hope we focus on.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Of the two, I think we need to close the gap on the defensive side of the ball more than we do on the offensive side.
That said, it is still going to boil down to the best player in the eyes of Dorsey and whoever else has some say in the matter.
Lucky for us that player is probably a defensive player.

IMO in order of priority:
DT OLB ILB CB OT FS WR TE K G RB
I would spend a 1st round pick on any of these, depending on who's there:
DT DE OLB ILB CB OT WR
I would look for BPA in the 2nd, 3rd & 4th rounds, concentrating on these positions:
DT DE OLB ILB CB WR
I would spend a late round pick on any of these, depending on who's there:
K G RB QB C FB

So nice to not be in the top 5/10 this year.
Pretty much the players are spelled out and your choice is not much but spelled out for you.
At #17 probably 17-40 is so closely related that you can be specific to a need rather than Well at # 5 you got these two players to choose from.
LB and Safety we should be able to get maybe the best in the draft class as those positions don't go early, same with Interior OL although OG has been going early lately, last year the kid Nelson was so freaking good.
CB is a position that might have to go early and then next shot would be Mid to late rounds
WR is said every freaking year as a need. I don't see it as a need this year. If a stud falls to us, go get him, if not no big deal.
Speed? or Power?
Pending who is there but I would love a Stud Safety I think its a position that will be growing in need across the NFL.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

https://www.cleveland.com/expo/sports/g6...ncart_big-photoNFL Draft 2019: Marquise Brown, Ed Oliver and 7 other players the Browns could trade up for By Tim Bielik, cleveland.com | Posted January 28, 2019 at 03:13 PM | Updated January 29, 2019 at 06:08 AM 11 shares 769 Comments Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver could be a trade-up target for the Browns, who pick 17th in the 2019 NFL Draft. (Michael Wyke, Associated Press) CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns are one of the most intriguing teams entering the offseason following a 7-8-1 record. Armed with 11 picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, a massive amount of cap space and a big draw for free agents in quarterback Baker Mayfield, they have plenty of room to make noise. But considering that the team should contend for a playoff spot in 2019, having 11 rookies on the roster probably won’t happen. That means trading up, something the Browns haven’t often done in the early rounds in recent years. Who could they move for? Here are some players that could be trade-up options from the Browns picks at No. 17 and 49. Trading up from No. 17 Rashan Gary, DL, Michigan Gary enters the draft as one of the more unique players at the top. He has defensive tackle size, and the athletic ability to move outside. He provides a pass rush from the edge and the interior. One concern is he doesn’t have the stat line that other top prospects have with only 9.5 career sacks and 23 tackles for loss. With the depth at defensive line, one is bound to slide. If Gary is that guy, the Browns could make a move up and put him opposite Myles Garrett and Larry Ogunjobi, putting him in a situation where teams will target his less in pass protection. His versatility makes him valuable, and he could give the Browns more athleticism up front. Ed Oliver, DT, Houston Oliver is arguably as talented as any player in the draft. The question that comes up with him is his size, or lack of for a defensive tackle in the NFL. The question will be if the teams at the top of the draft ignore what he isn’t and realize what he is: a disruptive force in a game where interior pass rush is more and more important. Oliver is less likely to slide than Gary because of his pure talent and production at Houston. The Browns need a defensive tackle. And if Oliver slides outside the top 10, they could make a call to move up and add him to their young defensive talent. Devin White, LB, LSU Linebacker is a need on the team that isn’t as pronounced as defensive line or offensive tackle. What happens with Jamie Collins and his contract will be something to watch in the next few weeks. And if he is released, there’s room for a third linebacker in a base 4-3 next to Christian Kirksey and Joe Schobert, or to rotate in nickel or dime situations. The team to watch with White will be the Bengals at No. 11, who might need a linebacker more than anyone in the draft right now. If White falls past Cincinnati, then he might not last long if a team like the Browns wants to move for him. Greedy Williams, CB, LSU It might seem odd to suggest the Browns could trade up for a cornerback after just drafting a Pro Bowler in Denzel Ward last season. But just as you can never have enough 3-point shooters in the NBA, you can never have enough good corners in football. But Williams could be a great complement to Ward. At 6-foot-3, Williams has the size and length that Ward doesn’t have, which could give the Browns a corner for tall receivers and one for shorter, faster ones. The top two tiers in the draft right now are very fluid. There’s a good fit between Williams and the Browns that a trade up for him could help add strength to the secondary. Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama Now that the Browns have their quarterback in Mayfield, there’s two things the Browns need to do: 1. Protect him 2. Give him weapons When it comes to step No. 1, Williams is considered the best offensive tackle in the class. If the Browns deem him much better than West Virginia’s Yodny Cajuste, Washington State’s Andre Dillard and Ole Miss’ Greg Little among others, he should be a trade-up target. The question is if he will drop down into trade range. It depends on whether teams thing he can play tackle, or if he is better as a guard like Greg Gabriel of Pro Football Weekly suggested. Williams was good as a tackle at Alabama, and could be good in Cleveland if John Dorsey decides he is a tackle. Trading up from No. 49 Marquise Brown, WR, Oklahoma Moving on to step two in the plan to enhance Mayfield is looking at a player he knows very well. Brown could go in the first round because of his remarkable speed. But he could slide depending on how concerned teams are about his lack of size at 5-foot-10, 168 pounds. Dorsey’s recent history, which includes Antonio Callaway and Tyreek Hill, suggests he likes speed at receiver. Brown, who is the cousin of Steelers receiver Antonio Brown, has speed and lots of it. The Browns need a gamebreaker at receiver. And given Marquise’s history with Mayfield, the two could reunite if he indeed falls. Jaylon Ferguson, DE, Louisiana Tech Ferguson was one of the big names to come out of the Senior Bowl last week. It’s a little surprising that it took until last week for the NCAA career sacks leader (45) to get some attention. But again, the depth of defensive linemen in the class mean that someone is going to slide. Depending on what the Browns do in free agency and at No. 17, they might still need more pass-rush depth behind Garrett and Emmanuel Ogbah. If Ferguson continues to rise, he won’t make it to No. 49. So if the Browns want to get him, they might have to make a move to do it. Kelvin Harmon, WR, N.C. State This receiver class is not strong at the top, but there are a lot of guys that could go in the second and third rounds of the draft. Harmon is a much bigger receiver than Marquise Brown at 6-foot-3. And although he isn’t the fastest receiver, Joe Marino of TheDraftNetwork.com likes Harmon’s route-running ability and how he finds the football. The second round could see a run on receiver. And Harmon is more of a total package receiver than Brown. Of the main receivers on the Browns, no one is taller than 6-foot-2. Size is a reason Harmon could be a fit for the Browns, and a reason to move up for him in the second round. Trayvon Mullen, CB, Clemson At 6-foot-1, Mullen doesn’t have the big frame that Greedy Williams does. But he could be a good complement to Ward and give the Browns a top corner with size. Mullen started 26 games in the last two seasons with four interceptions and 12 passes defensed. Those may not be spectacular numbers. But he played his best in the biggest game, getting an interception and earning Defensive MVP honors in Clemson’s 44-16 blowout of Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Mullen has first-round potential depending on how he does at the NFL Scouting Combine. But if he slides, his frame and physicality are worth taking a chance on in a trade-up.

I love Zierlein's mock. Lance Zierlein 2019 NFL mock draft 1.0: Kyler Murray to Raiders - NFL.com http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001...rray-to-raidersDevin White - LB School: LSU | Year: Junior Speed, speed, speed. White plays with good physicality and can really run. The Browns are looking for a linebacker with a nose for the football and that's White. Of course, I have read 3 mocks recently that had White going to the Browns, Bengals, and Ravens.

I'd have no problem with us picking up White but that would signal we've already cut Collins, IMHO. Can't have Schobert, Kirksey and Collins along with White.
I know a lot are snakebitten by trading down but the depth of talent in this draft is such that I wouldn't be averse to trading down to the 20s and picking up extra picks. We can maybe then upgrade the 3rds - there is some real talent on D and WR which will be there top 64 or so.
I also wouldn't mind trading up for Williams or Oliver.
Question - given the discussion on rookie QB and their contract windows. Would you entertain trading picks next year to grab a transformational talent like Williams? Effectively drafting our 1st (and possibly 2nd) rounder this year?

Guys I might like to see us trade up for:
Quinnen Williams- But the price will be too high to move up that far Devin White Greedy Williams-I am iffy on trading up for him because there are other good CB's that may be available in the 2nd.
If some people are questioning whether Jonah Williams can play Tackle in the NFL he would not be on my trade up list at this point.
I am intrigued by the Marquise Brown / Baker Mayfield reunion but probably wouldn't want to see us use a 1st or mid 2nd on a WR. There are some good big men in the draft (Butler, Johnson, Humphrey etc) that may be available in the 3rd ( or trade back into the later part of the 2nd).

Just a heads up - the site where a lot of us watched video of draft prospects over the past few years has either gone belly up or maybe became a members only pay site. Draftbreakdown.com is gone. What are we gonna do now, man?! (That was my imitation of Bill Paxton's character in Aliens 2)

Just clicking, Dave.
With us having a QB we can move forward with, our pick being at at 17 - unless we move up - this draft isn't as interesting to me as a Browns fan, as it is in most years. Which is a good thing.
Go D, at any level.
