I don't think Barclay is eligible for the PS.
He was on it last year wasn't he?
If so....forget that idea.
Barclay is eligible. As long as someone ain't looking for a KR, he'll be on th practice squad, which is smart because Cribbs is a kamakaze on returns.

If one scans the Browns roster one might notice that we have a relatively young team and a few dinosaurs.
When I first learned that guys like K Wright, Baxter, McG, & Adams made the cut I was pretty shocked. Taking Mour's point, these guys really have zero upside...two are injured and old...two are bad and old. BUT, they ARE experienced and we do not have much of that. I won't be surprised if these guys are regularly inactive on gameday.
A team has to have some veteran leadership, and I imagine Todd G had some some input as to who they should keep for the final 53. I wouldn't be so quick to write off Willie or Baxter. Willie, playing or on the sidelines is a great plaer to have and Baxter could be very effective for us in certain situations. As far as Kenny Wright and Adams go, they had the production. They made the plays to make the team, I don't care what anyone says about stats, these guys are judged on their production, ie; tackles. It's a numbers game and they have to consider need. Adams was third in tackles behind Griffin & Smith, we're light at safety deep at LB.
Quote:
Taking Tab's point, the coaches see these guys better and more often than we do...so they must know something we don't...so it's all good...even when we get pissed at each other every now and then.
They have to take the players they feel gives them the best chance to win.
That's what makes the board great; there's usually at least some validity to everyone's point.
Quote:
The young guys who were released will not likley get picked up - except for Barclay - and some others who looked good are hurt - Hamilton, Parker. We will likely see these guys on PS and maybe on the team later on.
We should have a nice PS this year. You're right about injuries playing a part in the decision for guys like Hamilton & J'Vonne, and they definiitely could be back for the same reason down the road.
Quote:
Some matches I thought would come out different, a few that were what I expected - but others maybe did not - and a question:
I would have kept K Dorsey over Anderson - this looks like an excuse to NOT play Quinn...and I don't like that line of thinking;
They kept the three best QBs. Like Savage said, no one is clammoring to get Dorsey on the field. That says it all. I don't understand the confusion here, Frye is the starter, Anderson the backup and Quinn is the rookie. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but until that changes, that's the way it is. Savage said the door is open for Dorsey to return in some capacity, and I hate to read anything into that, but pure speculation says that could be as an asst.
Quote:
I can't believe Baxter did not go on IR...same with McG. I hope being short these two able-bodied roster spots doesn't bite us in the butt...there are still huge IFs as to whether these guys can play this year at all. If Baxter comes back only as a corner, this was a bad move. If as a safety, maybe...a big maybe...this was an ok move. This is veteran respect gone awry IMO;
I believe they feel these guys will be back and contributing sooner than later. At least that's the impression Savage gave in his interview. He also alluded to the fact that Baxter will be various ways, as CB, nickle, dime and as a safety, so they must feel he's progressing at a very high level.
Quote:
Harrison is better than Barclay and does more...Cribbs already has Barclay's job(s) and also does more. I like Barclay...but I like Andrew Hoffman too. Ironic that Barclay's biggest play was because of Harrison's block;
Exactly, I don't get the worry over Barclay, he was the fourth guy, he never cracked the third RB spot, wasn't even close. Cribbs has the return jobs sewn up and McDonald & Harrison are backing him up.
Quote:
Sowells was better than Matua without a doubt;
Sowells has more utility and can be moved around.
Quote:
An injured D Minter is a better bet than an injured Baxter;
Minter hasn't done anything to warrent a roster spot. He certainly has shown he can outplay Baxter. I have to defer to the coaches on this one.
Quote:
Did Griffin really outshine Clifton Smith? I'm not so sure about that one;
Sort of:
Player Tot Solo Assist Sck Fumb Kris Griffin 21 18 3 1 0 Clifton Smith 17 16 1 0 1 (also had the INT)
They were #1 & 2 respectively in tackles which makes the Willie McG argument at least somewhat valid. Smith was all over the place and he more than likely makes the PS.
Quote:
N Dorsey DID look good to me...I agree that Butler may be the one to go when Tucker returns...he's only viable for RT...and Lord knows, we've got THAT position covered;
I'm glad we're keeping Tucker, he's playing well. Good to have decent depth along the O-line finally, hard to nit pick here.
Quote:
The explanation that Perry was ill - or something to that effect - helped me understand why they kept him. I though he did ok last year when thrown in the fire. Can you say versatile?
I don't like the way he looks in coverage, but he does make some plays. The sack he got and the ability he showed to play safety probably earned him the roster spot.
Quote:
I get Purcell and Pittman twisted around in my head...but...the stockier of the two looked good to me;
Purcell far and away outplayed Pittman, but since they're only keeping six D-linemen, neither gets a spot.
Quote:
I like Kelley...but I'm not sure why;
I think T Wilson will be okay and I know why I think that...it's because I desperately want it to be true;
That's all I can think of...for now.
Kelly looks decent when he's in there... interesting how Shaun Smith has quietly moved outside and it looks like he'll be rotating with Orpheus instead of Ted.

Just a general reply ....
There is one player whose continued presence on the roster really does floor me ..... and that is Sowells.
Last year Savage said something about "redshirting" him, with the idea that he'd be challenging for a starting spot this year. Never happened. From some reports, he isn't even close based on his training camp performance. Further, this offense (now) seems to value quick feet and good mobility out of the OL over pure power. Sowells hasn't shown much mobility that I can recall.
I would suppose that a guy like Jerome Perry made the team as insurance for Baxter. I would guess that the team sees Baxter as a couple of weeks away from full speed, and wanted that extra body at the position.
i was really stunned that Mike Adams made the team. I wasn't at all impressed with him .... but then I read that Justin Hamilton was injured (and waived/injured) and we did need a healthy backup Safety. (Since we only carried 3 on the final roster)
6 DL scares me .... especially given Washington's and Roye's ages.I would look for the practice squad to be loaded up with DL types.

Willie just doesn't have it anymore and still has a long way to go just to get on the field. We have AD and Peek as vets. How do you know Baxter can help? He tore up both of his knees and hasn't practiced in any game situations that I know of. He is way overpaid for his ability. Sometimes you have to just cut ties.

Wright hardly played because of injury and stinks. Adams might have production but thats not a good way to look at him. I like Hamilton a lot so I watched just the safeties on every play when those two were in.(I have a DVR and rewatch games a lot) Adams takes bad angles many times and gets dragged a lot because he hits too high and is too small. Most of the time he made a tackle was because they ran or passed to his side. I don't think he or Hamilton ever got beat in pass coverage. He is experienced and I'm sure that helped him.

Barclay wasn't given much of a chance to in the games. Maybe because Harrison out performed him in practice, that would be my guess.

Sowells should only be used at guard, same as Matua. I do think from what I heard Sowells has more upside and is better right now.

Sure he has, Baxter can't even get on the field. I think the spot came down between Perry and Minter and as bad as a thought Perry was he at least played and practiced. Minter has not been healthy but a little over a week. He should make it to the PS if they think he is worth it.

These don't mean squat. How much time did each play? How often were they out of position? etc...
I noticed Griffin around the ball much more than Smith. That really doesn't mean too much either because I wasn't focusing on either and don't know what their assignments were.
Quote:
Purcell far and away outplayed Pittman, but since they're only keeping six D-linemen, neither gets a spot.
I agree, and don't think either should have been kept unless we carried 8 lineman
Quote:

We disagree... I don't think he looked good at all. I would have kept Baba.
I can nit pick certain moves all day long but I think most of the roster is probably how it should be. Yes the coaches and Savage no more about the players (for EO) but that doesn't mean they always make the right moves. If that was the case, nobody who was ever cut wouldn't go on to be good players elsewhere.

Great discussion going here! I'm surprised by a couple of the cuts, but as others have said, as we cut late draft picks, it *should* indicate that the roster is stronger and has more depth than previous years. If you look at a few years previously, it was obvious that just about any draft pick would be playing that year for the Browns. Now, the later picks at least, do have to fight for a spot on the team and that is good to know. If nothing else, it sure gives us something to discuss!

I think we are much farther along this year. There are a few positions where I think we can get stronger by picking up cut players. RB WR DE DL S We won't upgrade safety much because of Baxter. We still are pretty good there as far as depth.I can't imagine some of these guys cut aren't better than our D line. We should to be able to find someone better than Kelley and we should have another DE who can play the run. I have zero faith in Carter and very little in Cribbs and Wilson. There has to be someone out there who we can get that actually catches the ball. I don't think we are as bad at RB as I thought earlier. I think it would be nice to pick up someone to beat out Harrison. My choice is Pittman but that's because it's a complete homer pick.

I'd love to see us bring in both Moses and Pittman. I know Moses might not make it as a 4-3 DE but I'm definitely intrigued about him as a 3-4 OLB

j/c One simple thing needs to be said here IMO Only a couple of short seasons ago,we were getting talent by stealing them from other practice squads. (ie...DA I believe from the Rats) Just a couple of short years later? We're worried people might steal talent off of ours! Don't that feel good!??? I'd say we could be having a lot worse things to be debating about huh?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Forget the timeline for a second and look at the schedule, we play a string of defenses capable of damaging any QB let alone a rookie QB with no game experience. Pitt, the Rats, New England, Oakland, Seattle, then Pitt again the Rats, again... By then the starting spot will be determined by injury or victory; we're either sitting at .500 or better heading into the "softer" part of our schedule with some momentum and looking to win the four or five out of six to make a playoff bid, or it's garbage time and Quinn probably gets the start for the remaining games. Dorsey has no part in that. It became clear during the preseason how it would go in the lineup and that everyone in the organization was happy with the fact they had three QBs that can effectively move the offense. Charlie could go down in the first play of the first drive and we'd still have a season to play. No way do they turn it over to Quinn with the teams we have to face unless it's absolutely necessary, and that's if both QB's in front of him go down or can't get the job done.
As far as the rest of it goes, I see your points, and though I may not agree, they're good disagreements to have... imagine a day a year or two ago where you're thinking you need to blow Willie & Baxter out for the better of the team and you're pissed because you're favorite 3rd O-lineman didn't make the team or the 4th safety made it because the 3rd was injured and the 4th RB never got the chance. We came through the preseason relatively healthy, and it looks like we have some decent depth. Gotta love that. Can't wait for next week.

"That's funny, I thought Sowells whole problem was he is not technically sound."
So what does that tell you about Matua? Go reread what I said...it was comparing Sowells to Matua.
When you are as slow footed as Matua - there are few technical skills cause by the time the base is there - the DLman is not.
Also to all you Sowells experts. He is totally different from what I saw in the beginning of Pre-Season to what I saw in last Thursday game against the Bears.
He made strides in his technique and his play.
You Think YOU Know it alls (not pointing out anyone in particular - if the shoe fits so be it and that includes me! ) who go to one or two Practice sessions and watch them in training camp and from there surmize your final decision from what you saw there is a JOKE.
All I know is this...I know my OL. What I saw from him in the beginning of Pre-season I cringed and thought oh oh maybe a waste.
What I saw him grow into over the last couple of games but specifically the Bears game as he played a lot. What significantly better and there was excellent improvement where he again is a viable prospect.
Btw- the only Offensive TD a 1 yd plunge by Harrison went right over Sowells. I know he Sucks.
I know what I'm talking about...I haven't read anything about his lack of technique? BTW - when was it written.
I see what I see and know what I know...what I don't know I don't comment about. At least not with authority but in speculation.
If you want to believe in what you want and that is Sowells sucks cause you are a greater evaluator of OL talent than Savage, RAC, Chud and Marshall - then you will look at that one practice where you stood on your tip toes and observed Sowells getting beat and then you know better than all that he sucks...go right ahead.
All I can say is the Sowells I saw at the end of this Preseason is markedly better than the one I saw a month ago. And some gentlemen with an eye for talent agree.
And before we all go the route - Oh he's a 4th round pick and thats why he is here over the likes of Matua...this regime has shown no allegiance to draft picks on the basis of draft picks alone. Everyone...EVERYONE has had to prove himself to be the talent. To insinuate that a better talent was let loose solely cause he was a UDFA and not a draft pick. Is naive...this is not Butch Davis' regime.
