Really disappointed over Savage's late draft picks which was something B-more excelled at.
Perkins - Cut Wilson - made team, almost cut Purcell - Cut Steptoe - Cut Pittman - Cut Minter - Cut Oshinowo - Cut Hamilton - Cut Sowells - made team, almost cut Speegle - Cut Hoffman - Cut Dunn - Cut
still hit on Leon Williams, Frye, McMillian, Vickers, Harrison
To me, that is not good production late in the draft...that's what is separating us from being 6-10 and possibly 9-7
Actually that's a sure-fire sign your depth has significantly improved...
U guys gotta listen to this after cuts presser from Savage...

Shoulda kept Dorsey...Damn it...He's familiar with Chud...

So much for the lare round picks of this past draft.
These will be practice squad players IMO. The cut that made me go Hmmmm, was Dinkins over Krause. Dinkins is a blocker, so I guess he filled a bigger need; but Krause was a pass-catcher and we need all the players that can hold onto the ball that we can get. JMHO Go Brownies!!!

I know it's already been said... but I cannot BELIEVE that Perry is still on this team! Can you think of a worse corner we've had siince we came back? He does nothing right whatsoever!
At least Hamilton could have served as a backup.
No surprise here that Baba and Pittman were cut. They were ridiculous choices for our team and I'm glad Romeo didn't just keep them for Phil's sake.

Hamilton would push for the starting job? The guy still needs to learn a LOT before that could happen. Remember he only played a year of safety a VT. Pool has been said to have the most athletic ability on the D, as said by Savage. I'm surprised by the move, but never thought he'd have a shot at starting, unless someone got hurt. But that never happens in Cleveland.

With Pool being a second round pick his chances of pushing for a starting job this year really was unrealistic. But if Pool had an "off year" I thought he might have a realistic shot next year. I guess your right that that may have been an overstatement on my part. But to keep my membership on this board I am prohibited from admitting a mistake - either in opinion or phrasing Someone said he had a bad training camp. I didn't see enough of that to comment but given that he was cut I must presume that to be an accurate statement. However last season when he was on the field he looked as good as Pool did. Though in limited time.

LMAO
I hope you weren't aiming that at me- wasn't trying to be harsh. I know there are some posters who well do everything in their power to try to make you look dumb, though.
I am disappointed that he did get cut, though. Let's hope our team stays healthy. For once.

I was suprised about Barclay also,,
But I guess we have to remember, at some point it was bound to happen.
Guys that look like shoe ins to make the team don't make it because we are better than before. we are used to hanging on to our late rounders and maybe now we are better so it's harder for them to make the team..
Just a guess however

Me too, but it's logical to keep Ali.. He's the only healthy FB we have.. Vickers is dinged at the moment.. We have three healthy RB's at the moment.. so keeping Barclay probably wasn't a good option in replacment for Ali at all

Baxter and Mcginnest are expensive useless players. I dont see the advantage of holding onto them while dumping kids with talent that arent 36 years old.
Honestly we cut one of our best special teams players in Barclay. We cut our best run blocker with Tucker out (matua for short yardage and goalines would have been smart) and we cut the best DL performer in preseason and honestly Baba outplayed everyone on that DL in preseason.
ALso what the hell is Brady Quinn gonna learn from Frye and Anderson? Dorsey was the vet presence and the guy who had been helping Brady get ready and obviously it was working well.
These were dumbass moves made by Romeo and Phil which hurts this team in the long term.

I see your point Mour,, but there may be some logic to it,,
Some of these guys are gonna end up on the PS.. I think that Barclay and Baba are eligible to be there... I bet that's where they end up..
Secondly, both players you mention, McGinnest and Baxter could still contribute and if they do, ,Cool.. and if they don't then they can either be put on the IR at any moment and guys from the PS can be brought up.
I think (although I don't know for sure) that some of this was because the couldn't do anything with Willie or Gary other than Cut them, IR them or put them on the team...
So, it may not end up being quite as bad as you think. W'e'll see that in a few days when teams set the PS roster.

I might agree with you about McGinnest, but who would you keep instead? Clifton Smith? Same with Baxter, do you keep Minter just because he's young but hasn't done anything? I think RAC & Savage kept GB partially out of loyalty but mainly because he offers versatility at safety, nickle, dime & STs.

No room at the inn. We have plenty of good special teams players and Cribbs is the return man so that left Barclay the odd man out.

Can't really comment on this, but Tucker more than likely will be back and someone else will have to go but a lot can change over the course of a few weeks and it wouldn't surprise me to see either one of these guys back on the roster at some point during the season.

While that may be true, Dorsey would be the absolute last guy to get onto the field in case of injury and it's not so much about learning with the 53 man roster as it is about winning. Having said that, Savage has left it open for Ken to come back at some point in some capacity... (asst. coach perhaps?)

That may be a little strong... these guys had to make tough decisions to put together a final 53 that they felt gave them the best combination of players to win. While I may not necessarily agree with every move they made, I have to say I do believe they have the best interests of the team at heart when making their decisions. There are obviously factors involved that we may not be aware of.

What he brings is a high price tag and we don't have a clue if he still can play. McGinnest will probably miss half the season and he shouldn't be coming back next year. I think both are bad moves.

I am just glad we're complaining about guys we cut rather than bitching about guys we're stuck with. I am most shocked about Dorsey and Hamilton, but seeing he was hurt explained that. We are going to see these guys again. Including Matua, the DLinemen and others once the year begins to drag on and our Brownies start getting injured

Nope it has nothing to do with the fact i think Romeo is an idiot. I thought Butch was a moron but i always praised the good things he did. I praise romeo when he makes good moves but he just hasnt made any in some time other than allowing Phil to hire his O staff for him lol.

Your pure speculation about how much time he'll miss or whether he'll be back or not aside, who would you have kept instead?

Few surprises as Browns cut to 53 Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 09.01.2007 Ken Dorsey is the odd man out -- for now -- in the quarterback battle. Gary Baxter is in the plans for the secondary -- though maybe not right now. There were few surprises in the 22 roster moves the Browns made Saturday morning. The team has reached the 53-man regular season roster size and will proceed with preparations for next Sunday's season opener against Pittsburgh with this 53. It's a roster that features just nine players who were on the team when Romeo Crennel and Phil Savage took over in early 2005 and, in a noticeable difference from recent years, just five rookies. The team's top four draft choices and undrafted fullback Charles Ali are on the team; the final three second-day choices were waived. Baxter is on the 53-man roster despite not playing in any preseason games. Savage said Baxter is close to completing a remarkable comeback from two torn patellar tendons, injuries suffered just 10 months ago. "Gary is within a few weeks of a return to play," Savage said. "With everything he's been through, he deserved a shot. That shot might be as a cornerback, might be as a safety, might be as a nickel guy. It's definitely as a football player." The decision to terminate Dorsey's contract wasn't easy. He was the oldest and most experienced quarterback on the roster, and his knowledge of Rob Chudzinski's offense had helped the Browns' younger quarterbacks progress through the spring and summer. "We felt like we kept the three quarterbacks that gave us best chance to win right now," Savage said. "We talked to Ken last night and this morning, and there's a potential opportunity he could come back to the Browns down the line if he doesn't go somewhere else." Among the notable names the Browns waived Saturday: Chris Barclay, Steve Sanders, 2005 draft pick Andrew Hoffman, 2006 draft picks DeMario Minter and Babatunde Oshinowo, and 2007 draft picks Melila Purcell, Chase Pittman and Syndric Steptoe. Mason Unck was placed on injured-reserve, and four players were waived-injured: Justin Hamilton, Jason Short, J'Vonne Parker and Jeremy LeSueur. Two players not on the initial 53 are offensive linemen LeCharles Bentley and Ryan Tucker. The Browns placed Bentley on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, meaning he'll be eligible to return to practice between Weeks Six and Nine of the regular season. If and when he does, he'll have a three-week practice window before the Browns must decide to activate him or keep him sidelined. "We felt PUP was the wisest course of action at this point," Savage said. "This gives him more time to get his leg up to speed. He's working hard. He's been here a lot. Most of his rehab the last 2-3 weeks has been here." Tucker began serving a four-game NFL suspension Saturday. The Browns won't have to decide what to do until his suspension -- followed by a one-week practice acclimation window -- ends. That makes the status of Kevin Shaffer, who took over for Tucker at right tackle but suffered a concussion Aug. 25 in Denver, especially important. The Browns kept both of last year's primary backup tackles, Nat Dorsey and Kelly Butler, on the initial 53. Dorsey started at right tackle in the preseason finale and can play both the left and right tackle spots. Butler has played only right tackle this summer. By the numbers, the Browns kept three quarterbacks, three running backs, two fullbacks, five wide receivers and three tight ends. On defense, they kept six defensive linemen, 10 linebackers and 10 defensive backs. Savage said the Browns are counting on having Orpheus Roye back for next week's opener; that they only kept six defensive linemen supports that thought. He said Willie McGinest is doing well with his rehab, "but we're probably looking at a few more weeks." Savage said he and his staff will examine the waiver wire when it's finalized and discuss adding any intriguing player or players, though they're not counting on making any moves. "This is our 53 for this moment," he said. "There are certainly a few players we'd consider switching out. But if nothing happened we'd be happy with the 53 we have." Link

Of this list the names that pop out to me are...
Nat Dorsey Jerome Perry W. McGinnest Baxter Kelley
I think Baba outplayed Kelley who looked out of shape.
Nat Dorsey is a complete waste of a roster space. We still have 3 other tackles on the roster with Tuck coming back after game 4.
Perry was able to fill in at safety but was constanly burned this preseason.
Baxter is overpaid and we don't even know how well he can even play.
McGinnest is done and he will be out at least 6 weeks according to the Browns. I seriously doubt he will be in very good playing condition when he gets back.
Even though Phil said he didn't plan on making changes it is possible he can upgrade some of these guys with players fom other teams.
I'm not sure how injured/waived works. I know the Browns felt Justin would miss 4 weeks and that is the reason he was released. I still have a pit in my stomach over this and think he is clearly better than Perry and K. Wright. I am clearly biased about him but most posters are suprised by him.
We should have kept C. Smith over McGinnest and if we could find someone better than cut him.
We could have kept an additional D lineman over Dorsey. We also have kept another reciever.
We will be able to put some on the PS but there is no guarantee they clear waivers.
Most of our cuts won't amount to much but keeping higher paid players who may never make it back isn't wise.

The Dorsey cut wasn't a big surprise here...I think the talk of him being a mentor to Quinn and having a grasp of the offense are things that aren't necessarily untrue,
I get the impression that Quinn surprised them a little. He's obviously been playing a pretty slim playbook against 2's & 3's, but has shown enough to me, the casual fan, to be impressed.
It's my guess that the coaching staff has seen him pick up enough in practices to make Dorsey obsolte- even as a mentor. If Quinn's bright enough to get things without a lot of hand-holding, what's the point in keeping Dorsey on the roster?
Personally, I was expecting Anderson to be shown the door, so Dorsey's ouster was a bit of a surprise to me.
This is all speculation, of course... but it is one explaination which could make sense. Either that, or Savage caught Dorsey with his wif- never mind.
At any rate, I couldn't envision a scenario which would have DA here and dorsey gone. Earlier this week I said I'd tahe a strong mind with a weak arm over the opposite any day. Go figure.
Guess that's why Phil rakes in 7-figures plus as Cleve's GM, and I hang out on a sports bb.

Let me get this straight, Mourgrym: We keep Dorsey, because Quinn can learn from a veteran presence, but we cut Baxter and McGinnist because....they are old and useless? I may agree with you on Mcginnest...I think he is just that, but not Baxter,... even if he isn't a hundred percent, what he can bring to the kids is well worth keeping him on. His desire alone speaks volumes for him. Baxter deserves a chance to help our team any way he can. I think Dorsey should have stayed and Anderson gone, mostly to quelch the controversy. Quinn doesn't need a mentor even tho Dorsey took that upon himself to keep a roster spot. Barclay you may very well see on the practice squad. And as far as the D line is concerned,.. Purcell out played Babatunde hands down. I believe that the only reason we have Washington and McGinnist on the team right now, is because we don't have anyone to replace them...... ofcourse, the weekend aint over either.

I don't see any surprises...
RAC is going to keep some vets that can play even if injured some this year...
He has to have leadership and the few wins they will bring...
I was hoping CB would make it on his ST ability alone... And in case JL gets banged up... As we know he will... But Ididjn't see him ahead of Wright or JH...
I don't see many big misses or bad moves... Most of the guys gone are low rounders, FA gambles and camp/PS fodder... IMO
Looks like better quality depth to me... A year or two ago a half a dozen of these guys would make the roster... Good to see they didn't... JMO's.

Any year there are going to be a few surprises to shockers.....but Dorsey and Barclay were flat out mistakes IMO.
But... it just boils down to numbers.
Too bad we weren't able to cut Willie and Teddy.

So where's Bentley in all this?

He is on the PUP.....we have 6 weeks to activate him, put him on IR, or cut him.

PUP'd. Not available to start practice until after week 6 games; then 21 days to make a final decision. Either activate him, or send him to IR.

Phil flat out said on Draft Day that nobody in the organization was excited about any of the players available on Day 2.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Just clicking,, You know what's really funny.... that some of us feel we know more than RAC and Phil and thier respective staffs... Now that's FUNNY! I'm as surprised by some of the cuts and some of the keepers as anyone.. But they must have had a logical reason for it.. Besides just being dumb or blind! That logic may escape us, but teams don't cut a player for no reason.. Maybe they need the roster spot for some other position. Maybe the team would have liked to keep say,,,,,,, Barclay.. but they looked around and realized that with Vickers out for a while, we need to keep Ali. So MAYBE, Barclay was a victim of numbers.... Keep in mind, I don't know if that's the case, I'm just using that as an example of something that is possible and some logic that may have been applied. Take Mour for instance, he's totally sure that Matua is a great blocker.. and you know, he could be right. But again, was it numbers that caused him to be cut? Will he be on the PS soon? I guess what I'm saying is, some of these guys are going to end up on our PS and it seems rather premature to be nailing RAC and Phil until you see the entire picture.. Also keep in mind, in his presser, Phil made it clear that for the first time, he felt that the guys they were releasing will end up either on our PS, or someone elses team or someone elses PS... That tells me that we had some good guys and the numbers got in the way of keeping them.. You know, it was bound to happen sooner or later. At some point, the goal was to get good at most or all positions.. when that happens,,, some very good players just don't make the squad. That's when decisions are the toughest. it's easy for us to sit back without any chips in the game and call someone stupid for the moves they make.. JMO

I think it was a mistake to keep Harrison and dump Barclay. I also feel Hamilton and Ken Dorsey were mistakes as well. I wonder if we kept someone like Nat Dorsey simply to cover us until Tucker gets back.
And, I respect loyalty, but like I've said before, if Baxter is only going to be a part-time nickel back, they better have a salary re-structuring in the works real quickly.

First off look at Ken Dorsey's pricetag compared to baxter and McGinnest. Thats the difference. Secondly Bodden is the one that has really helped the young corners. McGinnest role in helping Wimbley was very overrated.

I'm not sure how injured/waived works.
Injured/waived is slightly different than just plain waived. Injured/waived means that the player must go through waivers, if no team picks them up then they return to the team that cut them for rehab purposes. They are not active, nor can they practice with the team, but they can use the facilities to rehab. Gives them an edge to return to the team, the NFL, of course.

"I think Baba outplayed Kelley who looked out of shape."
Sorry you totally lost me there.
Baxter...will provide us with excellent depth and versatility or eventually go on the IR and might even retire if he doesn't see the field??? I see no wrong here.
McG...still is our best LB. He just has to stay on the field. From all I heard he came into camp in excellent shape.
Nat Dorsey...look you don't want to shift your entire OL for one injury. So if Joe T gets nicked you down grade LT with Shaffer and you down grade RT with Butler. No...you simply place Dorsey in at LT. Now if you are talking long term then you make your switches. We needed another OT until Tucker comes aboard. Tucker if not the starter can sub for 4 OL positions. And with him at RT if Shaffer has to make a shift thats a different story as well.
No surprise there.
Perry...I have to agree with you there. I'm sure he knows our system well and makes few technical errors in our schemes...Talent wise I thought he sucked. Oh well. If Minter could have stayed a little healthy he would have had that spot. And supposedly he's smart enough to play Safety as well.
Now Kenny Wright I didn't like him at all...what can you do.

Well Daman when you have gone 1-11 in your own division everyone is going to question moves especially when you are retaining expensive players whose best attribute is that Baxter and Phil are buddies and Rac is best buds with Big Ted and Willie McGinnest.

If any of the Players clear waivers with no injury settlement, they will revert to the Brown's Reserve/Injured list for continued rehabilitation.
I thought that was good to read as I liked all of the following and good to know they could still stick with us:
Waived-Injured DB Justin Hamilton DB Jeremy LeSueur DL J'Vonne Parker LB Jason Short
Mougrym...stop already with your Agenda Crapola...stick to the cuts.

Thanks eo, forgot that tidbit about 'without an injury settlement'. That's why I am not a lawyer.
So essentially those four players will still be around, just not part of the team officially for practice & gamedays.

What agenda crap. Its my opinion that several of these moves are bad moves. The best way to hurt your team is to hang onto players for to long.
You are a coolaide drinker which is fine and dandy but everytime i voice an opinion it isnt for some grand purpose of getting rid of Romeo. I think we filled about 8 spots with guys that shouldnt be in the NFL and released some talented young players with upside.
The upside for big ted umm he is big upside for baxter its really a great story that he can walk without a limp upside for McGinnest, Romeo has someone to hold his hand when things go bad upside for kenny, none Even Roye we would have been better off dumping than signing an extension.
