IIf I had to define it, I would characterize that position as someone who causes opponents to game-plan against. We have that guy in Landry. He makes things easier for other receivers.
I'm not trying to join the pissing contest about Landry. Whether you think he's overpaid or not I think is a silly argument at this point in time. The only thing that matters to me as a fan is that he is a good, productive player that helps the team win. I'll let someone else worry about what he's being paid.
Now that I got that out of the way, I disagree with your assessment here. When I think of my definition of a number one receiver I'd probably sum it up in one word: dynamic. I would define dynamic as possessing multiple special, above average, qualities or skills. I wouldn't characterize Landry as a dynamic player. He's an outstanding player with great hands, great route running, and great quickness and is good enough to have an impact on games. I just don't see other teams having to necessarily game plan for him. I don't see dynamic talent or any really special attribute that elevates his play to dynamic or anything that would keep defensive coordinators up at night. Landry seems best as part of the sum of a whole. Put a truly dynamic player on the field with him and his game will elevate.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...
Like I said, the definition of a #1 WR is subjective similar to the "franchise qb" label that we attach to quarterbacks. Hard to define and we all have our own thoughts on that.
Not directly posting to you, I get what you are saying about that big player. To me I think we have that guy (piece) covered via with our WR/TE Njoku.
Also I am curious on the new guy Strong. Coming out into the draft he was talked up a lot.
I think we dwelve on the WR position way too much. We got posters on here talking about moving up like we are desperate for this position. Draft after Draft. Dorsey is correct in his thinking so far.
I know I'm a HOMER and will be mocked but I got a feeling Strong is going to work out just as much if not more than Perriman worked out. I think he is 6'2" 220 so he is going to surprise all and actually prior to his injury he was progressing nicely unlike Perriman.
I don't see why Strong, Njoku wont cover that need.
Keep in mind Njoku is Bigger and faster than Hakeem Butler.
If the right guy falls to our laps and possible Hakeem Butler will be a good pick at #80 in the 3rd round. That would be great but I don't see all this "NEED" talk. I think a Butler would be a possible fit if he's tough enough but if we don't get him or another there is no panic in our NEED.
I'll Take Njoku over any of those big guys coming in the draft.

Callaway is DEEP Threat, a CB's NIGHTMARE on Slants and deep balls alike ...

I haven't watched tape yet, but he sure looks like a freak at the combine. He and DK Metcalf were the only 2 guys I've heard any hype on.
Buddy I work with, his brother is the Asst. HC at Iowa St, told him he is a great kid off the field too. Someone is going to get a great person as well as a great player.
Wow! That is stout praise. You really grabbed my attention, eyebrows shot up and such. I have a ton of respect for Edelman. It is a joy watching him work on the field. he is part of Brady's greatness. I can see a parallel between Mayfield with his receivers and Brady developing. I hope AC can keep going. Crank up the AC!

Although Callaway's development was uneven this first year I'm pleased that he remained involved in the offense. Kitchen's showed confidence in his game and so did Mayfield. The result was more consistency and increased production. He made some key plays for this team late in the year. I expect that to continue in year two.
I hope this offense operates in a way that on any given week we might look at the stat line after a win and Callaway has been the most productive receiver for us. Then the next week OBJ, then Landry. etc...
As talented as Callaway is I see signs that he is a grinder. He blocks, he takes contact by defenders, and as I said he improved during the season that shows he was putting in work. He didn't act like a diva.
You're not being a homer. At this point, Dorsey has transformed this receiving corp into arguably the best unit in the league. I say this with complete confidence because OBJ and Landry are proven talents that have performed at a high level for multiple seasons in this league. Higgins has transformed himself into a reliable and consistent target that produces. This was evident in his play this past season. Callaway has demonstrated once again, on-field, that he has above average talent and is just beginning to tap into his potential. Njoku's reliability to make catches is continuing to improve, his blocking may be a work in progress but he is an exceptional offensive weapon who is making plays when called on to do so.
I say we see at least 3 bombs of 70+ yrds to Calloway this year. Cant cover everyone. The guy can fly obviously and he will get lost in the mix on alot of plays..and be behind the defense..👍😁
Callaway probably improved as much as any rookie in the league from week 1 to week 16 now he has a year of experience with Baker. He will have a full off-season working with Baker and he is going to have OBJ and Landry keeping him in one on one's.
He could have some scary games. Lets not forget, he did not play the year before. I think he could be the next Antonio Brown if he puts in the work.
With most teams focusing on OBJ and Landry ... LOOKOUT this kid being covered by there 3rd 4th CB could be explosive for him and the Browns ...
John 3:16 Jesus said "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
I put together a video of all targets, catches, kick and punt returns.
I like doing these as you get to see the good, bad, and the ugly. Couple of games of bad and ugly, but overall, we got a keeper. Enjoy.
Watching this video makes it clear how BAD Tyrod Taylor was...
He missed so many throws in the Saints / Jets games. The good throw he had was that 4th down play and I feel like that was more about Callaway than Tyrod.

Your first paragraph doesn't sound like what I watched on the field last year. I guess that's why everyone sees things differently.
I saw a very good rookie year, from start to finish, where big plays were the normal, I think he had between 4 and 7 long touchdowns called back by penalty or other.
I really think Callaway is going to be the perfect #3 WR with OBJ and Landry. Nickle corners cannot stay with him and will need help over the top. That will open things up for Landry and OBJ in the short to intermediate range.
It's going to be a fun offense to watch! I'm so excited!

Yes, and there is but a few WR's who could have made that catch. My only complaint is that we did not try and duplicate that play for the remainder of the season.
We have much more than a dynamic duo here Browns fans.
We have the full metal jacket! And a Top Gun behind the trigger... #Dangerous
I don't know if anyone else gets it, or not, but the hidden meaning there is that our offense could be one where OBJ isn't the defense's primary worry.
Can you imagine that? An offense where defenses are willing to risk rolling coverage away from OBJ to keep Callaway covered... and then you still have Landry and Njoku to deal with?
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

And Chubb/Hunt running.

The offensive options for Freddie, Monken. and Baker are off the chain.
Just a basic 3 WR package is a major problem with play action.
With the ability of our RB's as pass receivers along with TE options. The play calling is unlimited.
I seriously wonder how teams will try to defend against us.
It doesn't matter.... with the options at our disposal, as teams scheme to take things away, we could blow up any scheme they try simply by reverting to sandlot football. Baker could on-the-fly draw stuff up in the palm of his hand and beat any defense.

Like Tim Couch used to do?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I'm guessing they'll try to overload the gaps on both sides of our RG in an attempt to get quick pressure in Baker's face. Probably a good bit of stunts as well to test Zeitler's replacement. Developing communication and chemistry between that right side trio (C-RG-RT) will be big for us along with Corbett/whoever holding up individually. I'd go 3 deep shells with robbers behind the aggressive fronts to prevent chunk plays while possibly capitalizing on errant throws from pressure.
That's probably where I'd start. Not sure it would work.

And we'll see the coverage and check to a trap run. The pressure gets blindsided and Chubb/Hunt blows right past them for 6-10.
With these weapons and RPO's, as long as Baker can read what's coming, we should be able to do a LOT of damage while keeping opponents on their heels.

As long as Kitchens and Monken produce a Playbook that creates space as in the last 8 games of last season. Improve on that. We have Vertical and Horizontal SPREAD that gives the OC/Play caller the ability to get us in such a good place and all our players can make the most of that space.
It might take some time for all to work like a good Swiss Watch...but when they do...Man o Man are we going to make HISTORY!
