Ahem...PPE, time for a new sig. ------------- Browns long snapper Ryan Pontbriand was signed to a four-year contract extension Tuesday, locking the 27-year-old up through the 2011 season. Pontbriand (6-feet-2, 255 pounds) was a fifth-round draft choice out of Rice in 2003.He is entering his fifth season with the Browns and has appeared in 59 career games. Since being drafted, Pontbriand has emerged as one of the league's top players at his position and has posted a near-flawless record on long snaps of punts, field goals, and extra points. He has worked with kicker Phil Dawson and helped him rank as the franchise leader in field goal percentage at 82.1 percent, which also ranks Dawson sixth in NFL history. Pontbriand joins a list of several Browns core special teams players signed to long-term contracts, including punter Dave Zastudil (thru 2010), Dawson (thru 2010) and returner Joshua Cribbs (thru 2012). http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/article.php?id=7235

Maybe our most successful draft pick from the Pre-Savage era....although KW2 and Sean Jones both awoken last season. But it was between Ponti and Andra Davis.

I have to say that I was thinking during the Bears game about how we never (knock on wood) see a bad snap during a punt or field goal. Also, he gets down the field and makes tackles, too.
Completely under-appreciated, but I think this is one guy who definitely deserves the extension.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

We get to keep this guy! Woohoo, hope it makes it to the Madden roster update.
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.

I think that Pointbrand will be here for every down of that four year contract as well. Pointbrand is the man!! I believe that he once said he hasn't made a bad snap since 7th grade. That is incredible. One of Butch's best picks he ever made. I just wish that maybe we had signed him longer. Oh well. Long live #64

He might get there.
Tom Goode was pretty solid.
I was watching a program on the Baltimore Colts and their win in Super Bowl III.
Former Browns GM Ernie Accorzii was a young intern executive with that team.
As the season opened the GM of the Colts insisted to Shula and all the other coaches they keep Tom Goode...a broken down old linebacker about 40 years old who could never do much all that well except snap the ball like a laser.
So..after much complaining, they kept the guy, and he made the snap that won SBIII and snapped perfectly all year.
Accorzi in this interview was funny..as the Colts were lining up with time running out for the winning fieldgoal, he said all he could think about was "Thank God we have Tom Goode!" because the year before the long snapper was less than reliable..
Lets hope Ponti finds himself in the same position a time or two.

Our previous long snapper, Ryan Kuehl, was signed away by the Giants for a sizable contract after they had some snap misfortunes in the playoffs the season before. Kuehl is now a 12 year veteran ...... but was just placed on IR by the Giants.

Yay, I guess.
At least we won't have to use another draft choice until 2012 on another long snapper.

this is great news it helps lock in the kicking game as zast is very pleased with him as his snapper since he gets the ball exactly the same everytime punting or placeholding

News briefs: Browns give long snapper contract extension CLEVELAND -- Ryan Pontbriand, regarded as one of the NFL's premier long snappers, signed a four-year contract extension Tuesday with the Cleveland Browns, a deal that will keep the specialist with the club through 2011. Former Browns coach Butch Davis was laughed at when he used a fifth-round draft pick (No. 142 overall) in 2003 to select Pontbriand, who played at Rice. Typically, teams will use one of their backup linemen to handle snapping duties. But Pontbriand has been steady and nearly flawless while snapping for punts, field goals and extra points in 59 games since '03. Last season, Pontbriand helped punter Dave Zastudil record a career-high 44.0-yard average. In 2005, the 6-foot-2, 255-pound Pontbriand handled the snaps when kicker Phil Dawson made a career-high 27 field goals and scored 100 points. The Browns have given long-term deals to several of their top special teams players, including Zastudil, Dawson and punt/kick returner Joshua Cribbs. http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10333393/rssHappy for Ryan!

Strange, I dont see all of the aholes that were on here after Botch picked him in the 5th round. "You don't WASTE a pick on a long-snapper!" How's that wasted pick now?
I myself was surprised that they picked him in that round but I was fine with it. He was a need and we got him before someone could have.
One of only a handful of good players selected prior to Savage.
Signing Steinbach - $49.5 million Signing Lewis - $5 million Drafting Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn - millions more Restoring the Browns to champions - priceless.

I don't remember being too happy about the pick, but to be honest, it's worked out really well... the kid does his job about as good as anyone can I guess.. Glad he's here

IIRC, I wasn't unhappy about the pick.. why not take a guy who had a chance to be solid at his position, even a specialty position... when in reality in the 5th round, any other position and you're looking at less than a 20% chance of making the team...

I think back and at the time, I thought it would have been unlikely that any other team would have taken him in the draft anyway... Who really knows, I was probably wrong,,,,
In either case, it worked out very very well for the Browns
