Virginia's first lady under fire after handing out cotton to visiting studentsThe wife of embattled Virginia Gov. What is this hybrid talk? Is this new slang I dont know about?
Usually a hybrid is made of two different species.
So, Swish is half human and half what??? Tiger. Most men would say horse. But ok.

Let's see.
We had MLK. You have Kaepernick.
We had Pink Floyd. You have Katy Perry.
We had JFK. You have Donald Trump.
We had Bob Dylan. You have Drake.
We had "Make love, not war." You have "Make America White Again."
We had mind expanding drugs like LSD. You have mind destroying drugs like Meth.
We had protests at schools where a girl in a long flowing white dress put a flower in a the barrel of a rifle. You have rifles being used to kill children at schools.
Yeah dog, your generation gets it and ours is closed-minded. You also had black people hanging from trees, so just stop . To say that racism back then was better is just ridiculous. There were people (black and white) fighting for civil rights and equality but there was a reason the fight was so brutal in those times. In say 1965, how many states was interacial marriage accepted? it was acceptable to slap your wife, it was acceptable to drive drunk and the list goes on

It was tongue in cheek to mock the ridiculous notion of putting generic labels onto entire groups of people.
To say that all old people are.........
Or, all black people are.........
Or, all white people are......
........is ignorant. I won't take such statements seriously and instead will mock them w/obvious sarcasm, that should be evident to anyone who can comprehend the written word.

I get what you are saying but in general things were way worse back then. Hell I graduated HS in 92 and at the time I felt we had come a long way and now almost 30 years later I look at my kids who are recent HS grads and see how things are and look back at my time and realize they have come a long way even since then.

I agree that things have evolved. They should evolve. I was replying to this statement: I work with the public, and some of the political conversations that I hear, especially coming from people in the 59-79 age range, it's absolutely mind blowing to hear their perspectives.
Basically, their whole belief system is tied to whatever the conservative agenda happens to be at that moment. And they cannot see anything outside of that perspective.....They are like droids, robots programmed to think a particular way, and unable to compute anything outside their bubble... To say that everyone of that era is programmed to think in a particular way and unable to compute anything outside of their bubble is not only irresponsible, but also ignorant to anyone who knows of all the radical and free-thinking that was wildly popular in the 60s and early 70s. I chose to mock it in a light-hearted manner rather than get nasty about it. I have never been a fan of assigning all-encompassing labels on entire groups of people.

We can't change peoples minds, we might be able to convince people to suppress their prejudices, but we can't change them. Only time and generations will dissolve the differences between races, religions, cultures. All our bickering and fighting and pointing fingers, only slows the process.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

In say 1965, how many states was interacial marriage accepted? it was acceptable to slap your wife, it was acceptable to drive drunk and the list goes on And there were white people fighting in the streets to help change that. There were the Kennedy's and Johnson in the White House fighting to change that. It was a time when activism actually meant something and brought about drastic change. A time when you paid the price for standing up for your beliefs brought about violence upon yourself. But let's forget all about that..... Battles for change were fought on the streets, not on Twitter.

I know, you're so tough you can take on a town full of rednecks. See, you picked a bad spot. The town square is in the old part of town. A place where the population would be far less tolerant of your immature, juvenile antics than the more progressive part of town where I live. And even then the local law enforcement wouldn't put up with you. You keep thinking your the toughest guy in the room and see where that gets you.

Y'all sat back and watched as the United States government systemically executed every civil rights leader during the 60's and 70's. I am glad the US doesn't have a leader like MLK, because he or she would have a 4 year lifespan.

Well let's see. Desegregation was passed to help level the playing field on education. Affirmative action was passed to help level the playing field on employment. And now, after all of that, somebody wants a check too?
Nah.

when the check clears, imma get in public square in your town and say "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!" How much do you want? What value on the check is going to make you say, "Know what, I'm good with it now. It's over and time to move on and stop bringing up the past." ???

Nah. Forcing schools to desegregate does very little if communities start to self segregate tho. Report finds $23 billion racial funding gap for schools https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/edu...9d15_story.html

So if people choose to separate themselves that falls back on society?
School funding is certainly an issue. I'm not sure how that problem equates to mailing people out checks. That still isn't going to fix the education gap.

Nah. No checks. No money. REAL reparations. It will be difficult, but anything worth doing is worth doing right. That's why real reparations will never happen.

If society won't regulate itself then nothing can ever regulate society. My goal wasn't to show you why reparations are needed, just that there's plenty of discrimination still going on. Just because Jim Crow is dead, doesn't mean his ideals are.

just that there's plenty of discrimination still going on. Just because Jim Crow is dead, doesn't mean his ideals are. And now we are getting somewhere. Simply cutting a cheque and changing nothing is tantamount to paying blacks & browns hush money. "Here... now stfu and go away." That repairs nothing. Society remains broken. 'Reparations' is supposed to fix what's broken. A bribe as pacifier is no solution.

i can't believe DC got me to write a serious post on this topic....
thats up to the elected officials to decide.
also, this idea that it has to be a check is a bit close minded. i'm trolling when i say "when the check clears", even though Pit seemed super serious with his responses. but yea, it doesn't have to be a check.
i think cannabis legalization and allowing AA's to apply for grow/business licenses first, and for free, can be considered reparations. CHS brought it up and i knew about it, the official in NY was talking about that as a way to repay AA's. i think thats a good idea.
there's also other ways that can be discussed that have been less explored. but this idea that it has to be some massive check only feeds the frenzy to guys like Pit, who keep claiming they're allies, but don't wanna support ally kind of stuff.
the issue with the weed issue is that we're in another aspect of thinking all AA's smoke weed or want to start a weed business. so while its a great idea, it doesn't address other aspects.
there's something like 37 million AA's in this country. while the majority of AA's can most likely trace their lineage back to those times, its not ALL AA's. so maybe like 20-25 million AA's are actually eligible for reparations? i dunno.
we also have to talk about time periods. for example, we're talking slave trade to the civil rights movement, in general. so Africans who migrated after the civil rights movement to America wouldn't be eligible, obviously including their children and so on. maybe you can make the case of post-civil war times, i dunno. but its gonna be a debate on who is exactly eligible, and it wont be close to the 37 mill that is currently here.
the other aspect of "stop bringing up the past" is that its never that simple. and no offense bro, but white people routinely make oblivious statements on this topic.
a lot of white people think because slavery ended in 1865, that means it was done in over with and AA's were free. thats not remotely true.
we had slavery, THEN the klan, jim crow, segregation, Tulsa 1921, the Tuskegee syphillis experiment, and then the civil rights movement and everything in between. AA's have only been "Free" for 55 years. there's a lot of people alive and well who remember those days like the back of their hand. and then the abuses to the AA's didn't just magically end after the civil rights movement. the anti drug and crime bills devastated us, because it specifically targeted our communities.
Jews had the freaking holocaust, got a free country out of it, AND nobody sits there and tells jews to get over it. nobody tells the japanese to get over the interment camps, and they got reparations too. so there's gonna be people who bring it up regardless, but to me, so what? not supporting a policy because somebody will still bring it up is not even a below average excuse not to support something. its just weak.
now, the argument for those who say that will certainly be a lot weaker if we got reparations for sure. but the LBGT got gay marriage legalized, and yet they still complain. so what? just because they still complain doesn't mean the SC shouldn't have made the ruling. so i just wanted to respectfully tell you that particular angle isn't gonna fly. people will complain no matter what policies are enacted.
so again, i dunno what the check should be, if any. i dunno what other methods would be most effective, if any.
but here's what i do know: Most AA's dont, and never have expected reparations. but a lot of us ARE absolutely ticked off that white people jailed us over and over again for weed, and now turn around and are now making 99% of the profits due to legalization from different states, while AA's still rot in jail over it.
its F'ed up. period.

I guess it's a contradiction in terms for me. There are many societal issues that need to be addressed. But I think we can both agree that the word reparations brings a negative connotation which will only bring resistance from a large part of society.
We live in a society of short attention spans and buzz words. Using the word reparations is like putting up a barrier at the onset that I doubt most of society will look past to see what you're really saying beyond that.
